I would be out of buisness within 2 weeks if I attempted to switch to a "non smart phone". Key is to add a watch to it that doesnt need to be tethered via bluetooth. You can still get make and accept calls and you dont have to worry about losing a phone, pulling it out, or any of that nonsense. Plus if you do have any emails or notifications they will go to the watch. But I also bought 4 prepaid phones with rollover minutes (60 mins each that never expire) and activated them, charged battery to 100 percent, then turned them off and stuck them in glove boxes of each car with a car charger. I paid 220 bucks for all 4 phones (3g) that are the size of a small bic lighter and 60 min calling card for each. Saftey first.
@@fabjonjon Well my little flip phone does have BT, I use a ear peace that I can accept calls, don't get me wrong , flip phones are lousy on texting, and other things, like writing down information, I use a smart phone in my truck that can connect to my flip phone, but only use it in my truck, smart phones are just to delicate for most construction sites. Hi, first time I've checked out your reviews. Impressed. The presentation was thoughtful, clear, informative. It gave me quite a lot to think about which I appreciate. Well done you. The limitation of the direction / selection 'blob' that you found so irritating is one of two things about the phone that make me a little dubious about using it. The other one is the prehistoric numeric keypad - press twice for a, press three times for b, etc. I can imagine going full on Hulk at using it. A look at the interior, cover off, for the phone to show what size SIM card etc would be used would have helped. Appreciate your time and expertise, thank you for the review. Take care, keep safe

KaiOS with some Google features; wouldn't that mean that this "dumb phone" is still smart enough to rope people into their corrals of privacy-deprived, data-compromised consumers? To me, one of the primary reasons for not using a smartphone is to improve one's privacy and security by unplugging from google, amazon, and social media (besides, in many cases, reclaiming time for more meaningful pursuits). At 67 and a long-time smartphone user, I'm in the process of selecting a basic flip phone so I can better protect my data and personal privacy, as well as simplfying my lifestyle. Am I understanding correctly that KaiOS is simply a slower, narrower gateway to the problems I'm trying to shut the door to as much as possible? Thanks, Scott -- great channel!

You can buy any phone from any carrier at full price walk out and immediately cancel the plan and then use the phone you just bought with any carrier in the world here
Still using blackberry q20, 4g, private and free from anything google, runs bb10 not android, fantastic keyboard, but is imminently (end of December this year) going to be losing its application store (blackberry world), so if you don’t get one and set it up before then or like me are worried about the long term future here (it’s going die sooner or later after all), the tough certain does seem like a very nice device to get.
I use a doro 626, got it for Christmas and it’s a good phone. I just started using it a few weeks ago and I love it. Just wish it had a browser and gps.
Dear Scott, I noticed from your video you are having some trouble using the navigation button, I suggest you use your thumb and place your thumb on to the big button on the middle and tilt your thumb to the left or right and the same with up or down, I think it should solve the problem. I am old school, started with dump phone for nearly 20 years before moving in to smart phone in 2011.
I got a Nokia 8110 for exactly 8hours... Also the time takes for the battery to drain. I afterwards charged it, to find out I can't put it in factory settings and just sent it back as is. Worst experience ever.
Here’s a question, do you think if I acquire a phone like this but then also utilize the number on an iPad with say Signal (where most my communication takes place) that that will work ?
Hi Scottie, really enjoyed watching an honest review of kaiOs and the 8810. I'm looking to get the 800 tough when it comes out in a few weeks. Can you tell me if the default apps, like Google, can be uninstalled? Is the T9 implementation really that bad? Cheers
The default apps cannot be uninstalled without a bit of hacking: sites.google.com/view/bananahackers/customizations/uninstalling-pre-installed-apps The T9 thing probably isn't that bad once you use it bit, but I was more used to the old-school Nokia method of tapping buttons 300 times to cycle through letters (crazy, but true).
That's a good question. From what I can tell, they are definitely more secure than your average smartphone. On the other hand, that security seems to be more about securing your data from hacking and such, and not necessarily from preventing tracking data and the like from getting into Google's hands. So, in the end I'm not sure.
Not sure what happened to my first reply... Yes, you can use Google Assistant for text-to-speech. On the messaging screen, or anywhere else there's a text input box, press and hold the big "center" button on the keypad for a bit, and GA will pop up and write whatever you speak. Of course, that means it's all being fed through Google, but since you don't have to enter your Google Account or e-mail or anything else to use it, there is at least a bit more privacy.
Having some trouble updating my nokia 8110, every time i try to update my OS or software as they call it, it tells me there are no new updates, tried to restart the phone to factory settings, restarting the phone a number of times but still no succes.
There's a setting in there for downloading updates over WiFi only, or also over the cell data connection. I changed mine to WiFi + cell data, and it was able to grab the latest update okay. If that's not it, I'm not sure what the problem is...
I enjoyed your video. Nokia mobile phones are excellent. I have the 3310 (a remake of their old design) and really like it. It is tough, and it snaps back together easily if accidentally dropped. I prefer it's simplicity over the "smart" phones most people use today. I think the slider phone you reviewed is very similar. I can't wait to see the new flip-phone that's soon to be released. Small mobile phones are so much easier to carry and don't need a WiFi connection to get text messages, or to use different features that "smart" phones have. I still have concerns about Google's involvement with the company. They are just too big and powerful, in my opinion. Also, can "Duck, Duck, Go" or Quant be installed on these phones instead of Google (for search)? I suppose they can be used in addition to Google as the operating system is kaiOS, right? Anyway, keep up the good work. p.s. - what do you think about apple iphones (for touch-screen)?
The KaiOS app store has 130+ apps, but no DuckDuckGo as of yet as far as I could tell. Of course, you can always use the browser and search via DuckDuckGo. I'm also a bit hesitant still about Google's involvement, because they always try to vacuum up data. On the other hand, one doesn't have to use those apps, they can be more or less blocked, and the apps that are there are just basically web pages (like PWAs) as opposed to "real" Android apps. So, at this point, it looks to me like the possibility for exploitation is fairly low. That may change in the future, but we'll see.
So I’m having a heck of a time figuring out what network this would work on on the states. It says it’s a GSM compliant network phone so that means only T-Mobile and AT&T right?
What happens if we login to a Google Account on a new Android device that we have created anonymously (not linked to our identity)? Do we have to remain logged out of Google to stay private?
Is it possible to completely remove unwanted preinstalled apps? Facebook, Google Assistant etc. Or are they locked like on Android phones I've used previously?
No, but as I understand it, initially 4G will be used to establish a 5G connection with new 5G phones. So, 4G should be sticking around for quite awhile, especially since it will take years for 5G to roll out everywhere (thank goodness).
I have the 800 tough and a 2720 flip every now and again I put my iPhone in a drawer and use one of them. I find them acceptable a little clunky at times the 800 tough being the worst have had to send it back to Nokia when it straight up bricked itself.
Dumbphones don't need to have WiFi, but in order to work as cell phones at all, they must be 2G, 3G, 4G, or 5G. Those G's just refer to a particular generation of cell phone tech. There's a lot of confusion out there about this though, mostly because some equipment makers and service providers refer to WiFi as 2.4G or 5G, which that's actually 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, which refers to the frequency used. But wait, there's more! WiFi also has it's own generational versions... although those are usually labeled WiFi 5, WiFi 6, etc... But I've seen the "G" added in there, as well. It's enough to make you go cross-eyed!
I just got an alcatel flip phone that runs kaiOS. There honestly isn't much that my smartphone can do that it can't do. I don't have a data plan with it, but it runs fine on my wifi. The only thing it can't do, is play pokemon go.
I’m going back to a flip phone, I can’t stand technology and it’s going to get worse and no one seems to care! All they care about is their smart phone.
In Amazon comments it says the dual sim version of the 8110 phone won't work in the United States on an AT&T network. Anyone using the dual sim in USA?
Hi, i need to know to these Dumbphones, if the Hotspot 4G is useful and fast as in a smart phone, it is what i really need because i only use the internet from my phone ... thanks for answer who knows
I bought it the moment it was out, I know it’s a feature phone, that’s why kept it as primary device, but the software is so slow, I hangs up even more than 3310
I tried Nokia 8800 4G and I hated it because KaiOS is so sluggish than a decent budget Android phone even on browsing Facebook and even having some bugs when typing.
@@ScottiesTech yeah. I actually sold it online after that. Lacking of useful apps (no proper FB Messenger app), messed up version of web apps (especially those made for touchscreens) and a bug when I type very fast it erases the whole sentences that I typed made me wanna stay away from KaiOS devices.
You can uninstall WhatsApp and Facebook, but not Twitter, RUclips, Google Maps, Google, Assistant, or any of the 3 included games - which is kind of lame.
i don't know. i'm not fond of my kaiOS fortified alcatel phone. the performance sucks worse than i remember dumb phones performing. i don't really want apps. i just want a responsive touch pad/interface when i navigate my few contacts and text messages. decent perforance isn't too much to ask when your phone has almost no features and no apps installed.
I dunno about the Alcatel phone, or any other KaiOS phones like the Jio phone. On the 8110, I can say that I was actually surprised at how zippy and fluid the interface is. I expected it to be laggy, but it's quite "smartphone-like" in terms of speed - at least in my case.
There is an official RUclips app, but it looks like no Spotify or RUclips Music yet. Lots of requests for Spotify tho, so hopefully it's only a matter of time.
Metro PCS/T-mobile uses GSM, which is what the 8110 uses... But the details matter. I've seen some people claim it works with T-mobile, and others say it doesn't. When in doubt... :(
Two days ago i received my Nokia 800 Tough, and i am so happy with it! For me no smartphone anymore, people at work think i am crazy because i downgraded my smartphone to a feature phone. But i am happy, the ohone feels rugged as fuck, nice big buttons, brilliant sound when it rings. Did i say i am in love again with my phone? Actually i never wanted a smartphone, but was talked into it but now i am no slave from Google anymore but i am free!
Leaving mobile data on causes the strongest levels of microwave exposure from my iphones. Using acousticom 2. Wifi was slightly less powerfull. I dont know if this phone would be different

Well, that sucks! I don't blame you for sending it back. I would have done the same.
All sounds good to me and the "shortcomings" are perceived as a plus by me. May investigate so thanks.
Great video, great info, and great humor!
Isn't KaiOS based on the old FirefoxOS ?
Yup. Altho apparently there was another version in the middle between the time Mozilla ditched it, and KaiOS picked it up and ran with it.
How would you recommend the 8110 vs a smartphone in terms of data harvesting by Google?
Here’s a question, do you think if I acquire a phone like this but then also utilize the number on an iPad with say Signal (where most my communication takes place) that that will work ?
Alas, I don't know much about Signal...
Hi Scottie, really enjoyed watching an honest review of kaiOs and the 8810. I'm looking to get the 800 tough when it comes out in a few weeks. Can you tell me if the default apps, like Google, can be uninstalled? Is the T9 implementation really that bad? Cheers
The default apps cannot be uninstalled without a bit of hacking: sites.google.com/view/bananahackers/customizations/uninstalling-pre-installed-apps
The T9 thing probably isn't that bad once you use it bit, but I was more used to the old-school Nokia method of tapping buttons 300 times to cycle through letters (crazy, but true).
How about Blackberry? They have been advertising themselves as safe and secure.
That's a good question. From what I can tell, they are definitely more secure than your average smartphone. On the other hand, that security seems to be more about securing your data from hacking and such, and not necessarily from preventing tracking data and the like from getting into Google's hands. So, in the end I'm not sure.
Making dumb phones smarter and battery life great again!
I use speech-to-text when sending SMS text messages. Does LaiOS have speech-to-text functionality for its SMS messaging?
Not sure what happened to my first reply... Yes, you can use Google Assistant for text-to-speech. On the messaging screen, or anywhere else there's a text input box, press and hold the big "center" button on the keypad for a bit, and GA will pop up and write whatever you speak. Of course, that means it's all being fed through Google, but since you don't have to enter your Google Account or e-mail or anything else to use it, there is at least a bit more privacy.
Nice review... is there a way of uninstalling, or at least disabling 'undesirable' apps?
Having some trouble updating my nokia 8110, every time i try to update my OS or software as they call it, it tells me there are no new updates, tried to restart the phone to factory settings, restarting the phone a number of times but still no succes.
There's a setting in there for downloading updates over WiFi only, or also over the cell data connection. I changed mine to WiFi + cell data, and it was able to grab the latest update okay. If that's not it, I'm not sure what the problem is...
Nokia announced 3310 4G with better specs beginning of 2018 but AFAIK it still hasn't come out... bummer!
Scotty! Do you know of any 4g dumb phones with no screen? Meaning it can only call, no texts or anything else?
What phones are not KaiOS? Can you provide that list? I loved the old OS and I wish to purchase a non KaiOS phone.
So I’m having a heck of a time figuring out what network this would work on on the states.
It says it’s a GSM compliant network phone so that means only T-Mobile and AT&T right?
I thought it was Verizon or AT&T, but you might be right.
this is actually cool, just what you need gps and internet connection if you get lost, that's it
What happens if we login to a Google Account on a new Android device that we have created anonymously (not linked to our identity)? Do we have to remain logged out of Google to stay private?
is there a review of the Nokia 2720 flip? I am going to get this phone this weekend
Bought a Nokia 8000 4G on ebay. I can make and receive calls, and send texts, but cannot receive texts. I'm in USA on Verizon.
There are a lot of people that prefer flip phones, but they are hard to find and price is outrageous.
Nice review!!! does it have call recorder? thank you
Is it possible to completely remove unwanted preinstalled apps? Facebook, Google Assistant etc. Or are they locked like on Android phones I've used previously?
Not the Google apps, but most of the others can be uninstalled.
Do you know what service the Nokia works on? TracFone,AT&T, verizon, etc?
Can 4G dumbphones still be used with 5G? I have heard that they will phase them out..
They want to phase out everything, including iPhones, so that you keep buying buying buying 😎
No, but as I understand it, initially 4G will be used to establish a 5G connection with new 5G phones. So, 4G should be sticking around for quite awhile, especially since it will take years for 5G to roll out everywhere (thank goodness).
Hey! Isn't Cletus one of those creatures from that old Heinlein novel? I forget which one.
He's a Tribble, from Star Trek.
In India the kaiOS based phone that we use is JioPhone
@ⅰи∂ㄩㄅ360 Ya it's just Rs 1500
Works only with jio sim.
SMART isn’t.
If Nokia lunches those old feature phones.. the world will still go crazy🙂
I have the 800 tough and a 2720 flip every now and again I put my iPhone in a drawer and use one of them. I find them acceptable a little clunky at times the 800 tough being the worst have had to send it back to Nokia when it straight up bricked itself.
Under Settings > Display, can you make the text smaller?
can you uninstall apps such as youtube, facebook etc?
Google ones, no. Other ones, yes.
Why do we need any "G"s???
I thought a dumb phone had no need for wifi???
@@ScottiesTech 🤪 you're not kidding! 😄 Thanks. It's totally confusing to me. Thanks for answering... 😊❤👍
Hi! Do you have any recommendations for basic phones with group texting enabled?
I just got an alcatel flip phone that runs kaiOS. There honestly isn't much that my smartphone can do that it can't do. I don't have a data plan with it, but it runs fine on my wifi. The only thing it can't do, is play pokemon go.
I’m going back to a flip phone, I can’t stand technology and it’s going to get worse and no one seems to care! All they care about is their smart phone.
In Amazon comments it says the dual sim version of the 8110 phone won't work in the United States on an AT&T network. Anyone using the dual sim in USA?
This ("renewed") one says it will work with AT&T: amzn.to/2O8sMzm Probably best to check with AT&T itself, tho...
Hi, i need to know to these Dumbphones, if the Hotspot 4G is useful and fast as in a smart phone, it is what i really need because i only use the internet from my phone ... thanks for answer who knows
Please also review the 800 Tough. Thanks!
Hey! Do you know if I can connect this phone to my bluetooth speaker? Kind Regards, Eran.
Yes! It should work just fine.
Does it work on more than a few freq.’s in Das USA? VPN? Providers?
Coffee, Cletus and Scottie. Good morning!
Is it possible to install java games from micro SD to KaiOS phones like nokia 8000 4g?
I bought it the moment it was out, I know it’s a feature phone, that’s why kept it as primary device, but the software is so slow, I hangs up even more than 3310
Does anyone know if Google Voice works on KaiOS devices? I know I'm not the only one but people have multiple numbers now. Thanks
I just want to answer my phone and text and when WiFi is out, hot-spot! Any ideas?
Great video! Does anyone know if I can get this phone for Verizon in the US?
Verizon has the Alcatel Go Flip V, which runs KaiOS, but it's the one version so you won't get app support
I tried Nokia 8800 4G and I hated it because KaiOS is so sluggish than a decent budget Android phone even on browsing Facebook and even having some bugs when typing.
I also noticed some sluggishness in places. After I updated to the latest version of KaiOS with the built-in auto updater, it went away.
@@MrFeelGoodJson24YTP Hmm. Well, I'm gonna be on the lookout now for any others who've had the same problems. Thanks for the info!
Sorry, I don't know how my question came up multiple times
KaiOS devices are great to use with Surface GO tablets.
Can you delete apps on this phone? I only want WhatsApp and perhaps maps. Temptation with time wasting with others.
@@ScottiesTech must be a problem with my specific (*edit*) model, then. bummer. :/
Can Kaios be flashed onto sony w995?
Are you able to remove apps like facebook and google assistant? edit: oh any Spotify app for KaiOS?
You can remove some of the preinstalled stuff, but Google remains no matter what.
Spotify or RUclips Music? It would be nice. Does it have it?
There is an official RUclips app, but it looks like no Spotify or RUclips Music yet. Lots of requests for Spotify tho, so hopefully it's only a matter of time.
Thanks Scottie willl the Nokia work with the Metro PCS phone service.
Does this phone work in the states with att or TMobile
It should work since as far as I know, AT&T and TMobile use GSM, and the Nokia 2720 Flip is a GSM phone.
I can not find a flip phone that has a voice activated text. Is there such a phone?
@@GavinReeves Hey Gavin, Thanx, -keith
@@GavinReeves GREAT, Let me know how you like it:-) -keith
Said phoenetically CHAOS?
You're so right
are there any podcast apps?
Hmm, I don't see one... You could of course download the podcast and listen to it via the "Music" app already installed. Not quote as convenient, tho.
Leaving mobile data on causes the strongest levels of microwave exposure from my iphones. Using acousticom 2. Wifi was slightly less powerfull. I dont know if this phone would be different
Most iPhones are rather infamous for having particularly high SAR ratings.
@@ScottiesTech emf safety zone got similar results when comparing radios on his microwave meter ruclips.net/video/jDjOEpWOUag/видео.html
I have a Nokia dumb phone... can I install KaiOS on it?
No. It's customized for certain hardware.
Is the battery replaceable?
Yes! Which is nice.
