That pump is advertised as silent. Tetra must have a different definition of "silent" to everyone else, because mine sounds like a diesel engine.
I recently bought a Hailea ACO-9602 on Amazon that claims to be 'super silent', but is actually so noisy that it wrecks my domestic living environment. Consequently, I just put in a return request for a refund.
I think the person who checks these "silent" pumps in the factory must be slightly deaf.
I decided to stop faffing around with cheap pumps, so paid more for a Hailea ACO-208, which is rated at 18 watts. Things are much quieter now. To minimise the sound I suspend it in the air by the mains cable.
Only really silent ones I own is a tiny 1 watt pump I have on a shrimp tank (made by Cambani). I own 2 but one has become noisy.
@@CrankCase08 I'd screw a couple of small hooks into the case and suspend it off that. If off the mains cable as you mentioned, vibrations + weight over time may cause you problems. The flex though it seems robust is basically lamp wire. Not designed to support weight, neither is the internal grommet or widget that stops the cabke from tugging directly at the solder points.
Best wishes.
Just found this at midnight and it stopped me from smashing all my air pumps with a hammer
I’m up right now watching and it’s 01:31!
I’m watching this at 2:15 am to!
What stopped you all the other nights
You saved my sanity!!! I have sensory issues/ASD spectrum/anxiety and having an aquarium has been so soothing in so many ways EXCEPT the noise. And my budget. Seriously, thank you!
Rebecca you are very welcome!!
This concept also works for small noisy children if you suspend them from the clothes rod in the closet and seal the door with duct tape. But remember to leave those tiny air gaps...safety first!
hahahahahaha works with women to Travis :)
lol! we are gonna be in so much trouble!
hey that's offensive
just kidding I laughed for abt 5 mins and I'm 13
I have a question but first I have to agree with Max Paul in saying "that's offensive" and you should never say things like that !!!
OK now that I've cleared the air and got that offensive post from Mark out of my mind I can stop playing around, get serious and ask my question.
Most of the stuff you post actually helped me out a few times and I'm always ready to try something new so any and all ideas you give I'm willing to try because I know, you know what you're doing.
I'd like to try this idea because I think it might help me in out in the future.
My question is... do you duct tape them to the kitchen or the bedroom?
Hahahahaha you guys are hilarious!
That is one thing that I hate about the aquarium hobby. Noise.
Yep, it can get pretty noisy at some point, doesn't it. I myself don't even notice it anymore, but my wife on the other hand has problems sleeping sometimes and every little noise in the room keeps her awake then. I solved the rattle noise with a simple sponge taped to the air pumps, now I have to find a solution to the bubble sounds. They are homemade biological filters, made from plastic bottles, ceramic rings and black sponges in combination with air pumps. Kinda makes a lot of noise those things, but super effective I must say. And cheap. LOL
I am a 'princess' sleeper, like your wife. Have you figured out how to quell the bubble sounds? This was a great video with much appreciated info. I'm sure your missus will encourage you to find a bubble sound solution.
@naledilorna
Sadly enough, no I haven't yet been able to solve that problem fully. It's better now, but like you said, she a 'princess' sleeper. She wakes up from a fly breathing across the room, so to speak. SMH
naledilorna add a airstone in your sponge filter if you have one it worked for mine
@@naledilorna Sure she's not just upset about paying to house fish. Most folks can adjust fully to a new sleeping environment in a month or two. I transited from total country to middle of the largest city in my state in about 3 weeks.
Hi Mark! Just wanted you to know that content from 5 years ago is still helping people! Had a noisy pump and remembered I'd seen this video a while back. Found it, followed your instructions and ta-da! A nice quiet pump for my fry tank! (I chose to go with the Folgers Coffee plastic jug motif rather than glass jar 😊) Thanks my friend!
Now this is what I call good advice, thank you so much! I thought I was too sensitive, that pump drive me crazy and I even thought it was broken because of the noise...thanks again!

Thank you so much for this. My tank room is a lot quieter & i got to enjoy my Me time staring at my tanks without the annoying sound from my air pumps. You're a life saver!
Amazing! I just did mine exactly as you described... even better when I placed the jar in the cabinet stand! no noise at all!
This information is still appreciated, four years after it was posted. I have a larger pump that I'm now thinking of hanging inside a small cooler. Thanks!!
Glad I could help
Gonna do this. My hearing isn't the best, but when I get near, I can definitely hear the pumps. Thanks, Mark. You've been a great help to this newbie.
Glad to help
Best method ever. Tryed it right after the video and it works great. Before I had 40db at 15 cm from the pump, now I have 20db. MASSIVE improvement.
glad it helped you
I was a skeptic, but WOW- it totally worked! Can’t even hear it at all now! Thanks a ton!
Its awesome, the duct tape has a dampening effect on sound waves I thing because it really doesnt work with any other tape haha
I was looking through some of your older stuff and I actually found three that I haven't seen till now and this is one of them. They are also the only three videos you have that didn't get a thumbs up from me... Till now :)
There were and still are a few that I didn't like as much because of different reasons.
A.) They were simple "common sense" but I give you the thumbs up anyway (because "common sense" isn't common these days. If things aren't bought up, people won't bother to notice them)
B.) been done hundreds of times, by others with aquariums, vivariums or any other type of animal habitat. Thumbs up for the fact that you work hard at pointing out everything in detail, explaining as well as visual instructions giving everyone not just the "how" but more importantly, the "why"
C.) I may have something that works better in my opinion or I though of ways to improve what you've done.
365 days in a year
+ 365 videos
= 365 thumbs up,
Congrats to you sir!
You are a genius! I used to have my air pump on a timer so it was off at night while i slept. Now my aquatic critters will get bubbles 24/7!
Glad its helped :)
That noise haunts my nightmares... Wish I'd known this, all my air pumps sat on the big yellow car cleaning sponges.
Omg it’s a miracle. I finally don’t need earphones in while I’m sleeping
Thank you for the feedback Joon :)
😂😂😂
lol
Great tip, Mark.
Old Vid, I know: But it works! Hanging it in a vessel works. I have the standard Tetra 100 "Whisper" that whispers in a loud hum. On patio for plant drip cycle system, sitting in a corner it was way too loud for me to feel okay. I like my neighbors. Hung it in a black-square bucket. HUGE difference; not perfect but I intend to line with eggshell foam. Only a noticable drone when sitting on patio. Not throughout the courtyard!
THANK YOU. VERY USEFUL TIP!
Hey Mark, I am a bit late to the show but this is gold! May have to nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize after this... Thank you!
Thank you Nigel, have a great christmas :)
Great job mark,i have a noisy hidom pump, will give this a go asap👍🏽
Gr8 tip m8. Thank you. Bought one of these advertised as "silent". Here I am
Glad I could help
I'm just getting into the shrimp hobby and your videos are my absolute favorite! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Thank you sir its nice to feel appreciated.
I'll be trying this one on the bedroom tank's air pump... thanks Mark!
You are welcome :)
Marks Shrimp Tanks I am finishing a tank right now moving the canister from aother tank to it and am going to start building DIY filters for fun :)
Thank you man, you saved my ears :) , tested and working. I would start putting all noisy household objects in jars :D
more like a drum instead of jars for toddlers!
The "Silent Giant" air pumps actually had the pumping apparatus inside a gravel filled container. They made no noise at all. Years ago, I put a noisy Hush 1 pump in a coffee can filled with gravel to silence it. That might work even better than suspending it in an empty jar.
Thats actually an awesome idea I will have to try it.
Why just not put it in the coars filter foam and then inside of the jar?
@@adomijan1606 Foam would trap a good deal of heat whereas the rocks would disperse it better.
@@effervescentrelief but the pump is sucking air so there is no stagnant air inside the foam, there is always airflow inside.
I can wait to run home to try this!!! I love silence (except for the actual sound of the bubbles bursting at the surface which I love). The application is so sound. I've tried towels, sponges, etc. and have never been satisfied.
oh it works :)
if u have one of the little square ones, what works well is to put it on top of a sponge.
Thank you so much. I don't own any aquariums but our tenant has a very noisy aquarium air pump. Will pass on the information to him.
My apologies for not sharing this sooner because this does work 100% :)
I just wanted to add for the people saying that this will over heat that the magnet and coil are in a thick plastic case with a tiny breather hole and we are not covering the hole 100% I say that in the video.
I went another route...
(AKA: two birds one stone!)
I think you'll get it?
I made a sandwich using carbon filter pads over and under, then I placed that sandrich inside of one of the mechanical filter pad bags from a whisper filter .
because I had them handy, I used the ones posted here but there are hundreds of cheeper methods www.homedepot.com/p/Deodorizer-Carbon-Filter-for-Trash-Can-Models-3-Pack-HO12CF3/302003379?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal2_rr-_-203500757-_-302003379-_-N
@@babypunkangel what do you mean? I cant picture the sandwich part
Hi Mark, thanks for sharing this. Just a question. Do we really need a glass bottle for this to work? Can we use a plastic container instead? Thanks!
Yep, on my todo list! Thanks for the tip!
I've always used that type of air pump --- a friend silenced his air pumps; he replaced all of them with a big air pump and located it in another room that had extra insulation LOL Hey, it worked! Of course your approach works but the noise never bothered me, I had lots of kids. Noise has been part of my life. ;-)
This video is pure fucking genius. Thanks for the great idea. My air pump is now almost silent!
Horse Malone true I bought one of those today and it wasn’t silent at all
The man is a genius! sorted my problem... thanks alot :)
works like a charm, my pump was driving me crazy and this has solved it.
Very interesting as usual Mark, oh and by the way my Dads saying was that you will learn something new everyday and it's true. Because what ever video I watch of yours it is always interesting and well put thank you Mark. Keep up the good work 👍🏻👍🏻😀
Thank you Anita, How have you been ?
Marks Shrimp Tanks very well thanks Mark good to know that you survived whatever made you swear lol 😂
Omg your a sanity saver! It worked, it was driving me nuts. Thank you so much such a quick and easy fix 🎉😁
You're welcome! just remember to leave a tiny breather hole 👍
Instead of putting the pump in a sealed jar, we can also reduce the vibration by placing a thick cloth like a small piece of Turkish towel type cloth. This also reduces the vibration & noise.
great video and good solid information thanks for sharing
Thank you. Perfect for my DWC
Mark, I keep my pumps on a wash clothes and it takes care of the annoying sound. Great video. Happy shrimping
How many accounts do you have ?

Thanks ❤
Nice, quick, easy tip, thank you.
Thans for watching Gary :)
Cool tip Mark. Thanks for sharing :)
It gets really hot, is it safe on the sponge? Also in the jar, won’t it get hot ? And the cord is holding some weight constantly…
@@Just_Lurking8 - The sponge will be fine. It shouldn't get that hot.
As for the weight the cord should hold a lot more weight than what the pump has.
If you try this just make sure the jar is not totally sealed around the air tube. There has to be some air getting back into the pump otherwise it will create a vacuum and the pump will not work.
@@jlathem56 Thanks, that makes sense🐠
Interesting idea. Will try this on one of my old whisper air pumps. Thanks.
Thanks very much, this is the first time how to silence your air pump that worked for me, I’ve tried everything even filling up the air pump with polyfil didn’t work. your idea worked like a charm thank you.
Glad it helped haron :)
Thank you verry much. The sound is gone and the world looks much brighter now ;-))
Genius Idea Mark !
Thanks a lot
Remember to leave a small hole so your pump can breath and not overheat :)
Great tips and tricks, great vid and that personality earned an instant sub. Cheers, mate!
Thank you Nick
Thanks bro!!
Omg! Your aquariums are beautiful!!
Thank you :)
Waw awesome timing. Thanks you uploading this video. I've been getting annoyed with my air pumps now I have three to listen to :) such a lovely simple idea.
Once you try it you will say FUUUUUUU IT WORKS LOL !!
Marks Shrimp Tanks haha I hope so 🤣
Great tip!
It is also actually Duck tape as well, Duck tape is the brand and oddly enough is apparently pretty crap on ducting :P
Well Damn!! thanks for sharing that, going to try that for the kids room.
Oh it works and they will love you for it :)
i have got a precision 800 air pump brand new, it states super silent i turn it on on its like being in the barbers shop the noise is terrible can u help me many thanks
Try what I showed you in this video :)
"Liked" this video but I can't believe in this day and age that someone can't manufacture a silent aquarium air pump. For me at this point the choices are to either keep an aquarium with a loud buzzing sound while you're trying to sleep or not to keep fish at all ? ? ? Unbelievable
Exactly!
Thanks Mark m just a beginner with my aquarium so that's great will get some sleep now thanks for sharing too
Glad I could help :)
Hello Mark! I'm fairly certain I have seen Flourish Fert in your room.Is that what you use? I have gotten several different opinions on it being Shrimp safe
Hello Ryan, its flourish trace you see I dont use the other stuff :)
awesome page, this is my first video Ive watched, but Im checking into the others now! thanks for sharing! I hate my pump, I want to try it!
Oh you will thank me for this :D
That is the absolutely stickiest duct tape I’ve ever seen
I think so, Image how annoyed I was when I went outside and my son had used what tape I had left to duct tape a punching pad to a wide tree!! he used the whole roll which cost me about $12 and it looked a mess on the tree hahahaha kids eh :D
It could explose by overheating isnt it a bit to much taped?
THANK YOU!!!!! You have answered a problem I have been dealing with since I having aquariums. Also have the same problem with duct tape being a pain!
Glad I can help Dianne :)
GREAT! Thank you so much! Enjoy your vids
Thank you WMW
That's pretty clever. May I suggest a hole in the top to carb in some fresh air. Take care.
The Jar is not airtight and it does actually have breather holes I say that in the video.
Awesome idea. Thanks. Don't you hate it when your tape splits? LOL😂💚
lol I know normaly I struggle just to cut it lol
You can also wrap the pump in a tea towel or cloth of some kind and tape it. That's what I do. Seems to work pretty well. Sometime even just setting pump on a cloth or piece of foam works too.
Thanks mate, it works great unless my mum tries to find her missing jar..
really thanks man it`s work like a Charm :D you made my day
awesome. I know how much a pain in the butt the pumps can get especially when you have a few of them in a room.
This is great, I want to get a shrimp tank for my bedroom (the only place I can) but I don't want a constant sound other than a little water bubbling. This should help!
Small powerhead with shrimp safe sponge filter would be better for you then, they are almost silent :)
Q, Where does the air for the air pump come from since you just starved it of air by enclosing it in a jar and sealing with duct tape?
A. ruclips.net/video/3JNcwZC-1To/видео.html You didn't watch the whole video did you?
You sir helped me a lot!
thanks.
Happy to help
I will try. Mine is toomuch noise and can't sit in the living room . What lights did you use? It looks amazing. I have 190litres corner tank but light unit blown up. Can you recommend me the best LED in cheapest as possible?
good security lights in the range of 6500k is what you are looking for in a cheap light.
Fab.Thanks so much.👍
Nice! Sound is literally vibration, without solid media the sound struggles to travel. Brilliant pump hack!
Hey, I had a quick question my ph is at 7.6 when it comes out of the tap it is 8.0 and it's 8.0 after ro I'm using seachem ph neutral regulator to lower my ph but it only goes down to about 7.6 and I don't want to use to much, any ideas on how to lower it closer to 7.0
The only real way to lower ph is with something that dilutes the water you have like distilled water or Reverse osmosis water. basically this is something that people need to think about before they choose shrimp types est because then you will know what substrates and equipment you will need ..if your tank is for neocaridina like cheery shrimp its fine as it is .
Thank you sooo much for this! Emptied out our coffee jar and put the pump in. Added some noise absorbing foam at the bottom of the jar and sat the jar on some foam as well and i cant hear the vibrations at all (can still hear up close but its gone from about a 100 to a 10) .
Can now only hear the noise from the bubbles which is minimal as they go through a foam filter
Sounds great! Literally 👌👍😊
Thanks and lovely setup mate
You are welcome lewis :)
What happens if u don't leave a gap at the top?
You need to leave a gap so the pump can draw air in ,if you javnt you can just puncture the duct tape with a pencil point or something like that .
Oh ok thanks again. i guess they really dont need a big hole to draw air in
beautiful aquariums
hi any chance of a slip of your plant as i cant get it over here in Ireland
I remember when you put this video out. This works amazing, by far the best way yo silence the pump. Very minimal noise. I came back again necause I have 2 noisy pumps in my livong room and they drive me nuts. Problem is, they're way too big for a jar. Is there any type of containers that work just as well as glass to insulate sound? Thanks Mark, you rule bro.
unfortunaly not, it has to be a big glass jar or even something ceramic like a large pot, ive tried plastic and it doesnt work.
What a wonderful idea!
Hello Dman, thank you :)
I'll give it a go I guess. Curious to know how the air gets to the air pump to pump air. Must have slight opening in the tape.... thanks for the idea.
Hi Mark on a totally different subject.Out of curiosity I TDS tested water from a dehumidifier and the reading was 28.Could I use this as an addition to my new tank set-up?
I wouldnt, if you dont know what else is in it
@@MarksShrimpTanks Thanks Mark.I am a novice with shrimp.I have 10 other tanks and really getting great info from your videos.Unfortunately a lot of the products you recommend are difficult to source in Ireland but I am working on it,Thanks again Gordon.
I had a similar idea when i saw a shock mount on a microphone stand, but i did it with rubber bands and a styrofoam cooler.
Aaaahahaha , you describe the feeling very well 😄👍
Might use this :)
LOL...You are brilliant!!
Those plastic feet on that Tetra pump make it a lot bigger so why not cut them off first before suspending it in a jar.
I am going to do it today! Say have tou ever done garlic vs shrimp? Roasted perhaps?
Not yet,I will get round to it though :)
Thank you so much for sharing
You are very welcome my friend
It is a good idea. But what about the heat? Is it warming? Is it secure to leave my home? I would like to know the experience that you have if use this method. Thanks
Not at all
The jar will work as a resonance enhancer. That's why the duct tape works. If u also fill the jar with rock wool it will be even more quiet.
Wtf. Utube said i was not subscribed. Sorry. Subscribed. Nice video!
Well done it does work I’ve just tried it thank you so much
Glad I could help
Thanks Mark! I have 2 of these and they're driving me nuts 😵
Oh you will love this then :)=
I've just found 5 baby shrimp in my tank, I have moved them to a breeder box to keep them safe from all my fish. how long do I keep them there till they can go back in the tank? do they grow fast? Is there anything special I should feed these babies?
Fish will eat shrimp even small fish will try and eat the adults, you can feed them a tiny amount of crushed flake food :)
