    Hi Dr. Jo, Thank you for the excellent video. The calf stretches and calf raises gave me the most immediate pain and swelling relief, which was somewhat surprising. Can you explain why the calf stretches affect the ankle area ? Thanks!

    • @AskDoctorJo
      @AskDoctorJo  5 лет назад +4

      You’re welcome. The calves do go all the way down connecting to the Achilles, so it is a part of the ankle. Also, the calf works as a natural pump to help move swelling out of the foot and ankle.

    Sprained mine about a week ago. Classic lateral inversion stepping in a hole on a local sports field. Most of the swelling subsided in two days however, and doing some of these exercises in my daily routine at present.

    • @shizuokaBLUES
      @shizuokaBLUES 2 года назад +1

      @@MultiBebo27 yeah I don’t really have a clear answer to this. I worked a support bandage for about three weeks straight and could walk slowly and carefully with the bandage, maybe after 3-4 days after the injury itself. Then the thick, semi rigid support bandage/wrap was replaced by a lighter elastic support sock. And then it took another 2-3 weeks of slow, steady walking. So maybe six weeks in total to gain full mobility?

I have been icing, elevating, drinking water, taking my omega 3, and doing her exercises on a small fraction level. My P T person recommended her, since with Covid, I wanna stay away from clinic. I am doing these exercises only to the point of a mild stretch. Now I am in a knee scooter and still crutches. I can put a little weight on it on the heel. First off, thank you for the video! My sprain happened almost 6 months ago, I had it Xrayed and there was no apparent break. I still get some pretty moderate pain at certain angles or stances. It just occurred to me this may be because I never followed up my healing with rehab. My pain is mostly in the top left side of my left foot, not in the ankle at all. I twisted my ankle on Spt. 28th and after all this time I finally got an X-Ray. I found out I have a heel spur. It is a surprise, as I thought I was just investigating my ankle pain. I think this is a totally separate issue, but maybe related?
    I thought I had Plantar Fasciitis, but maybe it was the spur all along. Anyhow, I am signed up to do an ankle class for my sprain but it is not until Nov. 28th. It is so long for me to wait, as I have been just suffering and taking over the counter meds. I did your video today for the first time and feel immediate relief. Thank you so much for posting! Now I will do these exercises in the morning and hopefully speed up my recovery time for the sprain. I am still stumped about the heel spur though... ( it is the same ankle and I also have a bunion on that foot. ) I think I will email my podiatrist.

I am a dancer since I was 4 years old so this is a heavy injury for me. I usually only had small strains or contusions but never ever something like this. I only have dealt with permanent torn hamstrings before.
    For my health, I quit dancing but I feel emptier and emptier day to day so I thought it was time to buckle up and train again. My feet are important to me so I will do my best to keep the muscles that I already had gained (before I sprained it)

    Can these excercises be used as injury prevention? I mean can I do them with healty ankles as injury prevention, is it useful?

    Hi I sprained my lateral ankle over a year ago now and I still feel pain in to this day. Idk why but I did also never go to physical therapy for it because I was in college and my sport doesn't have a trainer (i was a cheerleader) and so it guess it never healed properly but i'm a dancer now and i feel pain while dancing but it is my job so how can i help my foot out? are these exercises good to do for an old injured ankle? I don't believe its sprained rn because its been hurting only in two specific positions (up on my tippy toes and when it is super turned in). Everything else, running, jumping and walking are fine and i have no issues but ill randomly get pain and i really don't want it naymore

    Hello. Grade 3 ATFK over 3 months ago. Not broken, 2 weeks after I fell down my steps I started driving a lot for work and started having severe spasms throughout my entire leg….PT 2x week has helped along with cupping on the back of my leg….last week Ortho gave me a cortisone shot to help with pain when I point my toe or do a toe raise. A few days later, rolled over in bed and seemed to tweak ankle, right back where I was 2 months ago with more extreme spasms. What should I do 😩😩😩 immobilize and bed rest? Or keep pushing with PT? Ortho is thinking surgery 😭😭😭

    I can raise both heels but not on just the injured one. Should I try doing it or just keep raising both heels exercise only? It is been 6 weeks with high lateral ankle pain when walking. Should I continue the PT or try something else, cortisone shot, see an orthopedist?

    Tripped on a wheelchair at work months ago... never said or did anything about it, cause I just figured the soreness would go away. It seems like the ankle hurts more as time goes on. Thanks for posting videos so I can work on trying to strengthen it back up. I feel ridiculous thinking about going to the doc now when they'll just take an x-ray, find nothing and tell me RICE.

    Hello i hope you can help me to understand it. So 2 days ago i was playing basketball when I fell and my foot got /strained or something. I then came home to a big like bruise and when I touched it it didn’t hurt but when I tried to stretch my toes it started hurting and I could not stand up. But now it’s getting better. Could you help me understand if I strained it or sprained it and how long it’s gonna take until I can start playing basketball. Thx 😄

  • @MariosLasagna
    @MariosLasagna 7 лет назад

    Wow I never even thought to do those dorsi/plantarflexion with the tb on the foam roller...That's like a massage and exercise all in one I imagine. Nice tip. I never knew how bad ankle sprains can be until this one I got. I injured it almost 11 weeks ago and I'm still working my way to being able to walk properly. Be careful playing basketball or soccer out there guys, a bad ankle sprain could have you out for 20 weeks....I guess I've never had anything past a grade 1 sprain until now

    • @MariosLasagna
      @MariosLasagna 7 лет назад

      And btw, I've been EXTREMELY hands on with my physical therapy and still it's going to take me at least 15 weeks I'd say before I can walk with minimal pain. So yeah, my advice is to conserve yourself when playing sports a little better if you can manage to be more aware out there on the court / playing field etc

    • @AskDoctorJo
      @AskDoctorJo  7 лет назад

      Thanks. Ankle sprains are pretty bad injuries. When someone says at least they didn't break anything, I always think, that would be easier to recover from! Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

    • @MariosLasagna
      @MariosLasagna 7 лет назад

      Thank you. And yeah, I agree. Grade 1 isn't all that bad but grade 2 ankle sprains are an entirely different story. They're terrible. Terrible enough to where I'm going to re-think the way I play basketball to better avoid this from happening again. Hopefully never again!

I still didn't go to therapy because of corona virus but i want to go now because i'm desperate and i want to get back to form. Can i still get the ankle to what it was before?

    Im trying to recover from an Os Trigonum fracture, where the bone rubs against the nerve in the back of the foot. Basically i was in a cast for 3 weeks and now I've been in a boot for about 2 weeks. I think i am going to start trying to do these. I was misdiagnosed with gout previously and my foot was not in sure for an additional 3 weeks before being put in a cast so i have a lot of tension in my ankle and a loss of muscle in my legs. I am overweight to a large degree but started mountain biking prior to the injury and was able to lose some weight. I don't have insurance so i cant constantly go to the doctor so im really hoping loosening up the tension in my ankle with stretches etc will start to ease the pain im in enough to allow me to walk. Just being able to walk even in a boot would probably make me cry at this point, its been such a long hard road. Thanks for the video!

    I have an OCD Question.
    When doing the sideways outward ankle push, do i start with
    Option 1: my foot completely inwards and then go outwards ?
    Option 2: a neutral ankle and then go outwards?
    Same question for the sideways inward ankle push
