I think that countries such as France and Belgium sometimes send songs in french language , and that europeans don't like that because it comes over as something arrogant.
I’m from Poland and I think Poland 2006 was awful. I didn’t like Kate Ryan’s performance back then neither, now after all these years I kinda like it, but it could have been much better.

This Eurovision was the start of bloc voting at its worst, with the 2007 semi final and the 2008 final even worse. Thankfully the EBU split the semis into two for 2008 and began to reinstate juries after that to help halt the madness. Je T'adore should have been in the final. It's in my Top 10 of Semi Final Losers ever!

This is easily one of the best eurovision songs that have been recorded. However, this performance did not do it justice, I'm sure it would have improved had it qualified. But I still love this song now.
If the Juries had a say in the 2006 ESC then Kate Ryan would have qualified to the final. A great catchy tune from Belgium that deserved top 5. The 2000s contests had become a circus by 2006 and bloc voting was at its worst in the first decade of the 21st century (Latvia 2002 winner is an example of this). It was a relief when the Juries were reintroduced in 2009 and the joke acts got phased out.
Block voting wasn't really a problem, the problem was that many western european countries sent bad songs mostly in the 00's but in the 10's it changed. Back then sweden mostly ended up below 15th place in televoting and these days always in top 10.
The problem was the system. 10 spots in the semi stage instead of 20 now, the other 10 were given to the host and mostly trashy auto qualifiers. If we had 2 semis from 2004, in 2006 we could've seen Poland, Belgium, Cyprus, Albania, Iceland and maybe even Slovenia and Bulgaria in the final.

I watched most of the semi but got sent to bed before the results and was upset this didn't qualify the next day, I love this song and her music too !!!!

This could have done very well, had she been able to sing it live. But she was so painfully off-key (and looked very nervous as well), no wonder it didn't even make the final.
I have to agree with you, the song is great, far better than most of the rest anyway that year, and the studio track is very well done and produced, but the staging is ridiculous, it's overdone and her singing live is just about good so all in all, I more or less understand it didn't quite make it. I remember at the time being outraged by the fact she didn't go through, but seeing the video again now makes me realize that her performance on the night was not that great... such a shame.
