I thought the protocol for dealing with an ambush was the push on through no matter what happens.

Some times, I just went through ambush training, and my cadre mentioned this scene it was contact left, they shoulda exited the vehicle on the right, called toc, and then decided if they should push on

Imagine an explosive landing near you while you're leaning up against a large boulder, and you say you know what, I'm going to get up and face this thing because I'm no pussy. It looked like he was going to try to throw it.
Regardless of the boulder, you would naturally turn away, dig your foot in, and take off like a sprinter. Never seen someone get up and face an explosive like that.
Sheer panic. He stood up and realised that it was one of his own missiles. Something like that? A straight-up missile? That is enough to petrify you

It's an ambush. No air force can retaliate instantaneously to an ambush in the middle of the desert AND when all of the personnel gets killed.

Why did they try to capture him my indiscriminately firing rockets at his car lol. 1:18 would 100% kill anyone that close to an explosive. Not just some shrapnel, but all your organs turned to soup.
They reveal that in the middle of the movie, that stane paid them to kill stark. So they were supposed to kill him. They just changed their mind after discovering the hit was on the Tony Stark
They only kept stark alive because they wanted stane to pay more. Also, they wanted to get weapons out of him.
