I think they are two totally different comparisons each worthy of their own videos. Primes vs zooms are an interesting comparison with modern optics. There are definitely some 50 vs 50 out there for ya 👌👌 thanks for watching
Nice video Zach. I used the 24-70 (both versions) more than any of my other Z lens., the f2.8 was my favorite all rounder, although heavier than the f4. Thanks for the comparison.
comparisons are fun but it really boils down to using the right tool for the right situation. regardless of choice neither lens will prohibit you from getting a shot
Oof. You’re a monster for making me choose. By technicality, the 85 f/1.2 is noticeably newer, by that I mean it has less fringing and such just overall technically better, but the 50 is a little more versatile. If I could only have one, I’d choose the 50, but the 85 is really a hair better rendering overall. Grasping at straws and I might change my mind later lol
Both on my future purchase list: 24-70 (and rest of 2.8 trinity) needs to come first (have the f/4s)…but I know I’d love the 50 1.2 (have the 1.8) a slowly but surely!
24-70 is all you need. I bet you tell your viewers you shot it with either lens makes no difference. They will believe you. 1.2s to me is for “hey look at me” photographers IMO.
Great video bud, I have been wanting to add a 35 to my kit, but have a hard time justifying purchasing it because of the 24-70 2.8s. Now when/if the 35 1.2 ever comes out, that might be a different story! Great meeting you on the live stream last night, is Zwade a play on both the Z Mount and retired NBA star D Wade? :)
Thanks Brad. Not a fan of the 35 1.8 at it’s price, but I’m so ready for a 35 1.2 ZWade come from my first name and middle name, definitely not a play on a sports athlete I hate sportsball. 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 good meeting you too I’m sure I’ll see ya around 👌
@@ZWadePhoto I don't go away, so I'm sure you will haha. Curious, what don't you like about the 35 1.8? I loved the 85 1.8 and they are similar price points. I have never used the 35 1.8s.
The stairs photo looks super different on the 24-70, like its shot with a wide angle...maybe its because of the vignette, but I prefer the looks of the 50 more, its waaay more real to me and appealing. Thanks for the vid.
Nice video. People it's a fair comparison. He's comparing the quality between them. And both are excellent. And regarding about "lenses not being as fun" I think that's not true. They are even more fun because you will get consistent excellent results. And the primes have that special sauce. Especially the 1.2 ones. I think it's just that when you do photography so long, you don't get that fresh excitement as you used to in the beginning. Maybe? Lol. Fun video btw☺️
Thanks for the support Meraki! When I say not as fun, I believe it haha. Back in the day you chose a lens based on warmth or cool, sharpness, skin tones, speed, etc etc. Now, you buy the focal length you can afford. because it’s all good. Hardly any research necessary anymore because they all kick ass hahahahaha
I’m a prime guy so I’m biased. Haha. But versatility goes to 24-70 f/2.8, but long term the 50mm f/1.2 is such an amazing fun lens. I think with travel and the landscape aspect…24-70. If you want to help the channel, www.adorama.com/nkz247028ak.html If you already have a place to buy no worries :)
Super glad I found your channel!! New sub. Could you do a comparison video of a 85 f1.2 vs that 50 f1.2? Please. I’m looking to buy my first Nikon mirrorless camera and definitely picking the Z9. Buy once cry once lol
Again a hard decision-to buy the 24-70 f/2.8? To buy the 50 1.2? To buy the 85 1.2??? (Owning the 50 1.2 Voigtlander, 50!1.8 z, the 85 mm 1.4 G and the 24-70 f/4)… I am a landscape photographer mainly and occasionally I shoot video(and some stills) events…
I’m about to trade my 24-70 2.8 for the 50 1.2. Is just the tote of sitting I want to do. Flexibility is nice, but the depth of the 1.2 would help the portrait and talking head type videos I make.
You'll love it. I'm all primes now. The flexibility is cool, but that's the only advantage the 24-70 2.8 has. The 50 1.2 beat it in everything else. haha color, character, etc etc. Since I don't care about size and weight, I rock the 85 1.2 as well. I've got the 135 Plena and as soon as the 35 1.2 is here, I'm on that too. I don't know what else not only need, but want.
Thanks for the review ZWade. However, these are just different tools, nearly all the S lenses are optically good to excellent but to be honest who buys a 50mm f1.2 to shoot at 2.8?... I have that lens and yes its optically excellent as is the 24-70 f2.8 but the creativeness at 1.2 is just amazing, something the zoom obviously can't do.
Actually yes. Then I’ll do 70-200 vs 85 1.2, because both are excellent options for portraits so why not? Also I don’t see how 50mm and 24-70 are vastly different as far as what you can do with them. I guess since this this my channel and I’m having a blast, I’ll do whatever I think is interesting. Care to join us?
@@ZWadePhoto IBIS is not some magic that equalises your every movement! If you are shooting handheld then angles will be different. If you are shooting high shutter speeds then iso will not be optimal so you are adding another variable, noise. Using a tripod ensures the same angle and allows you to use base iso. Not using a lens hood when we we can see direct sunlight on the lens is a sure way to reduce contrast and ensure that the contrast is variable since, being hand held, the light angle on the lens will be different.
@@dominiclester3232 Well I didn’t describe IBIS as a catch all or magic lol. But with IBIS, the shutter speeds I used with good light allowing for low ISO, I’m very confident in the comparison AS shot. If you disagree with it, I respect that. We are having fun over here with “fairly” stable testing, not diving into petapixel charts.

Cool video bro. Thanks for the side by sides. I love seeing those.
Thanks V
Nice comparison Zack. It really boils down to what works best for the individual. You can’t deny the creative possibilities of the 1.2 though.
Facts. Lenses are so good they are getting boring. I would almost say it boils down to what someone things is cooler at the budget they have haha
I personally think the proper comparison would be the 50mm 1.8 vs 50mm 1.2
I say let the zooms be what they are for those that like zooms.
