In my opinion the bravest indian batsman of all time is nariman contractor. His skull was fractured in 3 places after being hit on the head by a bouncer of a west indian quick.
Look at Engineer bat. Bat and body close to the pad, a quick eye and brilliant footwork. To me, he and Shewag would be the most exciting opening batsmen India has ever produced. I would put Engineer a couple of notches above Shewag in terms of technique and on par with him for the exciting batsmanship.
I think you,re overrating him. Engineer,s average was only 30. I think a world class batsman should average at least 40 runs. Engineer was a good wicketkeeper/batsman, not a consistent world class opener. To my knowledge, india only had 3 test batsmen who averaged 40 plus in the 1950,s and 1960,s. : 1 vijay hazare 2 vijay merchant 3 polly umrigar. I would agree with you that engineer was among the top 6 batsmen of india during his career, which ended in the mid 1970,s.
