- What is it like to study BA Japanese during lockdown?
I spent my whole year (other than just one day) doing my language degree online, and I wanted to show you guys what a whole week looks like for me. I didn't want to make the vlog super serious, because I wanted you guys to enjoy it :)! I hope I've answered some questions below, but feel free to answer any questions as I am on spring break now so I have so much more time to connect wit you guys! LOVE YOU ALL!
✨A little bit about my BA Japanese degree (year 1)
5 days a week
60% language 40% culture/ history
8+ homeworks per week
8-10 essays for the year (for the 40% of the degree)
We have to learn 400-500 kanji (and you have about 2 weeks to learn Kana)
Bi-weekly language tests (24 hours to complete)
We have around 8 different classes per/ week (btw- I missed the Practical 2 class because I wasn't feeling well that afternoon :(((
THE ULTIMATE QUESTION:
✨Should you do a Language degree? Ask yourself:
Am I in love with this language AND learning about the culture? Am I prepared to study really difficult grammar and still have the patience to study some more? Do I possibly wanna live there? ✨😆 If you answered yes to most of these, do it! 💕 (see me ultimate answer in the comments xx)

@5:44 you can actually use the Sidecar function with your iPad (where it'll connect to your Mac as a second screen) and use your Apple pencil to write (since the pencil will act as a mouse cursor). And thank you for the transparent book-ends idea.

It's interesting to see how different our classes are set-up! I would say I definitely would prefer your Practical Class over mine. We only do exercises in a workbook, maybe talk one or two sentences in a class, the rest are explanations but we barely have conversations. (My speaking skills are shit lol). Things like Soft Power are squeezed into one class called Intercultural Studies alongside with other things. The class is mainly there to prevent a culture shock if we ever go to Japan
How you learn Kanji is also so different wow. In Practical class we only learn to write like 40 a semester, in theoretical class it's also in the 350-400 mark. Though we have to study them on our own with an Excel sheet made by prof
Gosh, I feel you with the translation class. I usually don't have trouble understanding the texts but then forming a sentence in German is just.. awful. At least my prof doesn't scold us anymore when we pre-translate them. My last two semester, I am currently in my fourth, my prof got mad at us for pre-translating stuff, so we always had to translate on the spot during class. It was awful and a bit frightening lol

I use an app for kanji which I like. It's Kanji Study. They have kanji divided according to the school grades. The first class (80 kanji) is for free. They teach you a stroke order and I personally like to use it when I'm outside e.g. waiting for sth.
