"Anakin is gone.. I'm what remains" such a powerful line.. encapsulates completely what Vader is, just a hollow shell of a previous life.
Probably the greatest line in all of Star Wars IMO. I love the OG Trilogy (I vaguely remember when TESB hit theaters and I vividly remember when ROTJ hit), I have always always liked the prequel trilogy (ROTS has always been my favorite), The Clone Wars series was good (started slow for me but ended great!), and the Obi-Wan series was very very good. But that line hits harder than any line I’ve heard in the SW universe.
the way you describe it 😮💨😮💨 hollow shell goes hard
A walking metal sarcopfagus.
Literally. Vader is just the shell Anakin built around himself. A broken man, inside a cage.
Except it isn't true. He's still in there and always were.. It's confirmed in "Return of the jedi" when anakin kills the emperor.
“You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker. I did” and the ominous smile right after is so unsettling and it gives me chills
That just shows how far Anakin has fallen
@@marietoro5820 no anakin is still in there
@@noahbriggs8347 True, but we can't forget Vader considers Anakin dead, not even his own master could redeem his former Padawan and everyone believes it for the next 30 or 40 years to come only his son and his wife were the only ones that sensed there was still good in him and Anakin Skywalker could return from the ashes of Darth Vader but it never happened till the end of the empire
It’s Vader-twisted and evil.
There wasn’t any smile lmao he had his mouth covered by the mask dummy
Anakin Skywalker has got to be the most tragic character in cinematic history.
That was intentional, George himself said 1-6 is the “tragedy of Darth Vader”
Obito might be more tragic ngl, although people do compare the two because they are pretty similar
@@chrono9503 Besides the fact that the master is way more iconic than the "apprentice" in Obitos case while the opposite rings true with Vader

Exactly
In ROTJ, when Luke asks Vader to join him, he says something similar: “Then my father is truly dead.” That’s when he realizes he can’t let Luke down like he did Obi-Wan.
Ashoka too
he failed those he cared about most, it was his son that set him free
Obi wan once thought as you do.
@@hyperDarklord13yeah but luke is his kid
Ahsoka: I won't leave you. Not this time.
Vader:....then you will die.
Is it me or the transition between voices just feels so much deeper and poetic? This whole scene I personally feel like it’s so poetic from Obi Wan getting closure to seeing Anakin come to be just an empty shell. Amazing
I agree. The voice changing in and out during Vader’s speaking lines made it top notch. The “…I’m what remains” line is awesome, will probably end up being iconic, but wouldn’t have hit NEARLY as hard without the malfunctioning voice synthesizer/breathing apparatus
@@mikeawesome3 yassss shivers down my spine every time. They did amazing work.
Word for word....nailed that. Agree !00%.
It's obviously not just you or do you think you're the only ''poetic soul'' here? Please.
The fact that the line "I am not your failure" is in Haydens actual voice before cutting back to the synthesized voice saying "..obi wan. You didn't kill Anakin Skywalker. I did" to me, will always mean that Anakin managed to sneak out one last bit of comfort to obi wan before Vader came crashing back.
Anakin's final gift to Obi Wan was closure.
Blending Christensen and James Earl Jones voices made this amazing
“You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker, I did.” That line sent chills down my spine! 🥶
Bro deflected that L like a blaster bolt😂
"Im not your failure" can be seen as Vader saying it is not Obi Wans fault, but what he can also mean is "I am not Anakin - your failure of a student"
I think it could also be that denial of the dark sides manipulation especially with his enunciation of failure, basically saying he isn’t a failure, that this wasn’t a mistake
@@twisted_spirit6223 it does sound like his ego was speaking there. Like he was annoyed or frustrated by the fact that Obi-Wan was making him out and considering him to be a "failure" (as opposed to him trying to console him and assure him that this wasn't his fault).
I think Anakins face after the “I’m sorrys” says it all, “How dare you pity me” vibes
After all the complaints of his stilted performance, Hayden came back and absolutely ANNIHILATED any false notions of his ability. Even being what it is, a pretty stereotypical exchange in any good vs evil story, his delivery in this scene really is top tier imo. Fantastic timing, subtle changes in posture, and control of tone all make this scene emotionally impactful in a way that really punches above most of the Star Wars series' weight.
People don't give enough credit for Hayden's performance. Anakin was nothing but a little child that had to be brought up in the Jedi order... He was nothing but a soldier to them. Hayden Christensen what's phenomenal being Anakin/ Darth Vader.
He was actually over hated bc to ep 3 but in fact he did excellent job to incarnate a young vader slowly fall into the darkside trying to escape his destiny but.following its path when all he wanted was to avoid it .such underated performance . Moral of the story dont let them bitches make u fall into the darksidrs
@@fullsilverbig95 Moral to you should be to stop being a sexist a*e. It wasn't Padme's fault, it was palpatine's, anakin's and jedis' to an extent. palpatine planted those visions and manipulated anakin, anakin allowed this, jedi order didn't help as well. But sure keep blaming Padme who did nothing wrong AND died from grief.
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 What? How in the world did you interpret fullsilverbig95's comment as blaming Padme?
Agreed
“Then my friend is truly dead.” Always gives me chills bc he knows he can’t never have anakin back
Nigga he pushed him down into lava and left him to burn alive slowly
It's not ''like'', it IS what he means with this phrase.
It makes me so sad. You can see right after he says Anakin is gone, the slighting twinge of sorrow in Vader's eyes before he furrows them getting angry again
“I am not your failure Obi-Wan”
That Obi-Wan with Vader’s robot voice holds so much pain
I don’t think Vader realized how much guilt obi wan had over the years for his fall to the dark side until this scene. You can tell when Obi wan apologizes, there is so much emotion and guilt being let out and it probably sort of confused Vader. Obi wan thought that he was a big contributor in his fall but no else besides Palpatine probably truly knows that Anakin chose the dark side in order to save his wife. The scene is just incredibly emotional because even though Vader has such a hatred towards obi wan, he still lets him know that he had nothing to do w the choices he made. It’s was vaders decision and vaders alone. “You didn’t kill anakin skywalker, I did”
Actually he has a part but this is more of a role that he took rather than an actual mistake that he did.
Obi wan was a hardworking jedi who had an iron will. He didn't stray too much from the jedi code.
He had to, in order to understand Anakin he needed a similar perspective to Qui Gon had.
This could have provided a safe environment for anakin to be more open about his feelings.
If Anakin was able to discuss his mistakes with the tusken raiders with Obi wan he would no doubt be able to talk about his secret marriage and eventually his worrisome dreams about padme.
Saving Padme was a big factor but not the only one. Also, it's clear that Vader doesn't really care what Obi-Wan felt. He told this not to allay obi-wan's guilt but to show him that he doesn't mean anything to vader at all, that was more like ''don't overestimate yourself, bro''.
there is a few ways to read into it. anakin simply being guided by pride and not wanting to be seen as someone else's failure, telling them, no i did this, i wanted to become this, i killed that person you used to know to become this. the other is the way you read it and i also read it, that he was giving obiwan closure in way. sure he's his enemy and he still wants to kill him, but maybe enough love and respect was still there to at least take away obiwans guilt. maybe anakin at that moment had enough humanity in him to assure obiwan that it's not his fault, he did this to himself, maybe a little guilt drove anakin to say that.
Too many people misunderstand this scene. Vader isn't trying to relieve Obi-Wan of his guilt, that isn't something Vader gives a fuck about. It's obvious you people don't actually understand Vader, or dark side users in general. Vader is taking responsibility for becoming strong, for becoming the second most powerful being in the galaxy, he's bragging. "You didn't beat me, Obi-Wan, I beat myself. I'm not a failure you made, I'm a success I made."
“Twisted by the dark side, young Skywalker has become. The boy you trained, gone he is. Consumed by Darth Vader.
-Yoda
Yugi
@hyperDarklord13 I was reading the quote, and instead of reading it in Yoda's voice, I started reading it in the Pharoah(Yami/Yugi)'s voice because you said Yugi 😂😂
The way it fades from Anakin’s voice to Vader’s when he says “I am what remains” is such a good touch
I love how in the end, Obi-Wan simply walks away and Vader doesn’t even do anything about it.
"I am what remains" is a very interesting choice of words coming from Darths self reflection.
Typically villains like to boast that their evil transformation marked their evolution and grand improvement. But the wording of "remain" somewhat contradicts that.
It suggests that the persona of Anakin Skywalker was the whole. But like his lost limbs, he had lost trust and faith in the way of the Jedi. And like his burnt flesh, he had burned the bridges connecting him with his master. His best friend. Obi Wan.
Vader isn't a product of simply adding darkness to the equation. He is an example of when you strip something down to nothing, in which all that can be left is the dark.
Good analogies, I like the visualization you gave
In the original films he tells Luke “You don’t know the power of the dark side” this wasn’t persuasive statement but rather a warning to him. Darth Vader lived in self loathing and lack of self esteem because of his limits as a sith due to the restraints sidious had on him. Ine of the biggest restraints being the extreme discomfort of living in that suit
@@danielboucheofficial Besides the anger and distrust, Anakin has succumbed to apathy, a feeling of well, non-feeling, in order to dull down the intense feeling of guilt. His guilt turned from self-loathing into another persona of himself, Darth Vader. When he says Vader killed Anakin, it's almost like he's still trying to shift the blame and guilt onto this emotionless hull that killed both Padme and Anakin and did all those terrible things.
I've seen this so much in my own life and even those close to me. Guilt tears away at people until it becomes too much to bear the that we are in immense wrong. It causes paranoia, blame shifting, outward hatred that is actually directed at ourselves, etc.
The psychology of Anakin is honestly more relatable than many characters I've seen despite being set in such a fantastical setting.
@@TayoEXE the term blame shifting is kinda ignores the amount of pain he has suffered and effort he put trough.
I kinda feel what you mean and I feel so overwhelmed I can't even find the word for it.
Anakin had tried anything and everything to be a part of the jedi order but he couldn't fit in.
He was too passionate and caring, too "human" among the group of people who managed to put away those feelings. Even Obi Wan was unable to understand him (they've spent a decade together)
No matter how hard you try everyone has a breaking point. I this way I find Dath Vader to be the most tragic character in the cinema. Very few has suffered as much as Anakin. And this is one of the reasons why I love the prequels and clone wars era so much. I respect the original trilogy but it wasn't that deep let's be honest.
The "what" always caught my attention. He could have said "I'm who remains", but he doesn't even consider himself a person at this point. He's more a machine now than a man.
I don't know how so many people were dismissive of this series. EP 5 and 6, and this scene in particular, are some of the best SW content out there.
It’s just some people are to I guess you can say closed minded. They were upset that it did not live up to their exact expectation. But it was fine even though I wanted more. They have to see that the show was given more effort and thought than what the behind the scenes drama we saw in the sequels. The show did not toy around already established canon like what the sequels did with the chosen one prophecy or bring back Sidious who they say never died, even though for both George Lucas himself on camera has said Anakin is the chosen one and he did kill Sidious.
And that's the problem, only these last episodes were good, mid-season was terrible.
@@Zerath0 Skill issue.
There were some good moments, but also a lot of bad writing and stupid moments.
It has its moments, not all can be bad but overall the show was disappointing in many ways. You can’t say that from Andor or at least not recognize that is a better show than this one and how can that possible be? When you have Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, two of the most iconic and loved figures in Star Wars. So yeah the poor reception just reflects a very lazy production.
Seriously the plot has no substance and the action or the duels in the show were not even close as memorable as the ones from Episode III. And no, I’m not referring just about unhinged choreography but even the locations were so unattractive, the shaky cam, too dark, I mean come on how can you not complain when this was teased as the battle of the century. I barely remember the last fight and that’s because I didn’t even bother to give a 3rd look at it.
When the voice goes from Anakins to Vaders when he says I am what remains is perfect
The fact vaders face went from blue to red was such a good attention to detail, it was like Anakin giving Obi closure
“Goodbye, Darth”
Deep and tragic quote of acceptance and grief, never expected to witness that unusual quote in the Star Wars.
Also sparing Obi-Wan was unexpected decision from Vader.
Great scene
This is where Vader is truly born. Its like he and the last pieces of Anakin that was still fighting inside of him came to a compromise; take the burden off Obi Wan but on the condition that from then on Vader would be in total control. No split personality, no emotions, nothing but pure Sith. It would take his son decades later to open him up once again to the light-side.
I love how they mixed together Hayden Christensen's voice and James Earl Jones; the way it kinda shifts back and forth because his voice filter is probably damaged
Recently I watched Ashoka and rewatched Revenge of the Sith. Seeing Anakin at 1:31 is just terrifying and sad. He is a prophet-like figure who fell into darkness and completely absorbed it. Here, Anakin is truly gone. Wonderful job by Hayden.
So padmes last words to obi wan were “there’s good in him” then when luke tells Vader to come with him he says “obi wan once thought as you do” implying there is some story there, that obi wan hadn’t completely given up on Vader right away, this scene shows us that, he still felt anakin was his failure he Blamed himself, and in a weird way Vader gave him closure. Vader confirmed this was anakins choice, he chose to destroy anakin, thus why obi wan starts referring to him as “darth” rather than anakin, and why he tells Luke anakin was dead. I must admit this is pretty well written stuff for Disney Star Wars
And yet, people will still continue to scream bad writing.
i mean the writing of this scene essentially exists to patch up plot holes that always existed. when they wrote the first movie darth was officially written to just have killed luke's father. the original sequel script never had the darth is lukes father reveal, it was just thrown in later, i forget why specifically. obiwan was just describing the actual literal plot in the first movie, in the third movie they had to write in dialogue where obiwan is like "umm yeah technically it was true he killed him in a way ya know", to address plot hole dialogue in the first movie. this scene was written to just flesh out the entire thing and fill the gaps.
it also at the same time sort of creates more inconsistencies because darth's dialogue in the first movie clearly references the time they last fought, which was depicted in revenge of the sith. last time you were the master and i was the student etc or whatever it was, cause anakin was literally still under obiwan in terms of rank in revenge of the sith, and obiwan beat him fair and square. now you have to believe that dialogue in a new hope refers to the time they fought when vader was crushing jedi left and right and exterminating the remainder of them, and was even stronger than obiwan. then you have the fact the in the show the first time vader and obiwan meet again, vader obliterates obiwan. then they fight again, and obiwan gets an asspull victory by destroying vader's breathing equipment, before which, he was losing. so now the dialogue in the first movie makes no sense. the last time they fought obiwan barely pulled a victory, and the time right before that, vader owned him, so the whole "now it's full circle" dialogue is kind of looking stupid now. vader was already stronger than obiwan last time they fought now, in canon.
you also have the whole thing where obiwan and leia are besties when she was a child but she refers to him as some mythological figure her father fought in a war with in the first movie. so yeah, star wars does not have good writing, they attempted to patch up a hole in a story they wrote where they made things up as they went along and in the process created more holes.
This is one of the few Star Wars things that Disney got right.
I feel like it was a missed opportunity to have it switch back to Vader’s voice as he says “I did.” When talking about killing Anakin Skywalker
i agree but i also like how they did it because a lot of people still have a hard time bridging the gap between anakin and vader but this sort of shows that they are one and the same
I remember when Quigon Jinn first introduced Anakin to Kenobi. ANAKIN SKYWALKER MEET OBI WAN KENOBI...Then they shook hands. Its heartbreaking they ended up like this.
You can definitely hear Obi wan trying to reason with his former Padawan
Can we also appreciate James Earl Jones, Ewan McGregor, and Hayden Christensen giving their 10000000 percent all in this scene
I had to rewatch the series cause of how good it is
This definitely hurts Obi wan, you can hear the sadness in his voice
All the characters in the show have so much emotion to them, Luke,Leia, bail. Obi Wan, hell even Darth Vader himself
That groan at 0:22 is heartbreaking. Anakin isn’t evil, he’s broken.
For all of the flaws of this series, moments like this make it worth it to me. I love the way Hayden and Vader's voice blend into each other. I love that Obi Wan finally gets this cathartic moment after living with his guilt for almost ten years.
Legitimately such a powerful moment.
"Anakins gone im what remains" That tells us Anakins is really dead
But he's not, though. He's lying to himself.
No shit
oh really
It’s a valid point, obi wan killed anakin physically and anakin killed himself mentally
@@v1nceclone anakin wasn’t dead, he was just buried in his own darkness until ROTJ

Well done on quoting the video
"You father was betrayed and killed by a man named Darth Vader" like you completely understand obi wan's point of view now. He now sees vader and Anakin as 2 distinct people....
I actually really liked these last episodes. Especially this last conversation they have. It ties perfectly back to episode 4. Obi-Wan tells Luke that Darth killed Anakin, because that is what Darth tells obi-wan!
R.I.P. James Earl Jones 🙏
The way Anakin says, "Anakin is gone... I am what remains" sounds almost painful... you can hear there is still internal struggle.
As weak as the series was this scene almost makes up for it. So fucking good.
It was worth for like 6 hours of poorly written torture.

A+ beyond plus for this scene right here
The fact that this actualy explain what "Ben Kenobi" said to Luke in Episode IV truly amaze me
Whoever combined the voices deserves a raise
Bro kept on yelling he wasn’t going to stop without an epic ending
I want them to make a series of Vader's first years
We all know Anakin's pain and trauma started when he held his dying mother in his arms after being tortured and kidnapped by the tuskan raiders. Fron there it was all a spiraling collapse towards the dark side, really tragic what happened to him and i kind of understand why he ended up feeling so empty. No one to put his trust in, all alone and afraid.
This might be one of or even THE best moment in the entire franchise.
for me , Anakin is a victim . 1st - victim of the Jedi when he was young . They separated him from his mother. , 2nd - victim of Palpatine ( Emperor ) and his dark side lies . i'm sad for him . 😔 , even if it's just a fictional character.
You’re right and he was also born a slave. He was always someone’s pawn, someone’s property.
Darth Maul: "Kenobi... KENOBAAAIII!"
Darth Vader: "Obi-Wan! OBI-WAAAN!!"
Vader is lowkey creepy and scary in this scene when he talks about how he killed anakin and I love that darker version of Vader
I’m just saying like Anakin has been bullied throughout his entire life from being a slave to a Jedi and then to a sith it wasn’t until his son finally freed him.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I prefer Aniken’s voice or I should say Hayden Christianson’s voice now that we know it was underneath the mask it i adds incredible layer of emotion
i use to think Darth Vader was just a bad guy as a kid. but as a adult. i realize that he was just a poor broken boy who grew up wanting something but was denied and eventually was manipulated into the dark side and began his suffering until Luke saved him in his final moments.
There’s waaayy more to anakins downfall/tragedy than what you just stated lol

I know it's completely my own headcanon. And that it's neither going to be denied nor confirmed by the staff of writers but I truly believe a fully consumed Darth Vader wouldn't need to explain himself to the likes of Obi-Wan. I believe Anakin was sparing Obi-Wan of the guilt that was hindering him for so long. And because of that Obi-Wan was able complete his training free of mind body and spirit.

Anyone else notice how Hayden's mouth is not moving 90 percent of the time? I've seen this scene a hundred times and never noticed it, but now that I do it looks a little silly. I wonder if this was intentional and the show thought it would look weird for the audience to see his mouth move since we're so used to seeing the mask.. so they tried to make the camera angle disguise it as much as possible and hoped no one would really notice.
I think it's intentional lol

They should have edited Hayden's voice in the flashback to make him sound like he did 20 years ago but kept his voice unfiltered in this scene due to Hayden's present voice sounding a lot like it's worn down over the years which is perfect for Vader due to his throat and vocal cords being burned on mustafar

In A New Hope, Obi-Wan tells Luke that Anakin was killed by Darth Vader. It used to just feel like Obi-Wan was being evasive, but those same words coming from Vader’s own mouth really add something. Makes it a lot better.
Obi-Wan needs to learn how to finish the job lol.

Obi-Wan "Vader betrayed and murdered your father"....
So sad. Even Vader knows he’s just a mere shell of what Anakin could’ve been.
"You either die a hero.... or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain...." this quote could't encapsulate Darth Vader's fate better.
Star wars to many is just "space movies"... but the sheer scale of the world created for this saga to reside in... it generates infinate opportunities for spectacle material, and you really have to be appreciative for the effort here. Ofcourse some things could be done better and portayed a bit differently, but in the end, for me, it is the most complete represantaion of a "next level" human race. And the most intriguing factor in it... the struggles remain the same... love, hate, compasion, anger, honnor, dishonesty... all aspects of humanity are still there... man may have conquered space but his true essense remains. A constant conflict of traits!
As a viewer, am humbled by the outcome of a tale that's been going on for almost five decades and can still keep me at the edge of my seat.
Poor Anakin. He can barely breath and is on life support. But wouldn't cutting off his mask kill him?
the cutting tho is prob not needed but good vid
The back and forth between Hayden and James Earl Jones is so phenomenal even when their voices blend
Damn this scene here is gold
I know people will cry about it but I hope they redo the original trilogy one day with these two actors.. maybe in 5-10 years
I’m not crying, you’re crying.
I’m glad it didn’t get another season. It doesn’t need it because it was all written well and gave a proper precursor to the best trilogy in the franchise.
Okay, unpopular opinion but hear me out:
Reshoot the OG trilogy with Hayden and McGregor. Everything else can be the same, but add them to the mix. The fight between Vader and Obi-Wan on their first encounter could be so much more epic.
We'll see, overall a recast would be a lot more respectful than to have AI faces / voices for actors such as Carey Fisher
Star Wars fans have been eating good lately.
Indeed.
For most this for obiwan it was “this is anakin but not really” it’s so easy to disassociate anakin from vader but when he breaks his mask you can see him having a moment where he is like “ oh my god this anakin my anakin”
