Bennis raw pull is still my favorite deadlift of all time. No suit, no straps, no hitching, holds the bar at the top and sets it down like a baby. Nobody has ever come close to repeating what he did that day.
About time someone explained this to the world, and no better than Big Loz. When I was in the military we had a saying " If you can't grip it, you don't lift it." I love the Strongman, but I lived powerlifting. Each one has it's place and I respect them both. Thank you sir for all that you do.
I don't think grip should be the limiting factor on how much you can lift in a movement that uses so many large muscle groups at the same time. I like powerlifting and use the hook grip to take as much of my grip out of the movement as I can. I train and test my grip in other ways.
@@waynecanova6030 I agree completely. The deadlift will test/train muscle groups in the body. Sadly people do have smaller hands or not the best grip and that should not be a limited factor of what someone’s personal best. Someone was to tell me their PB and they used straps, I would still congratulate them. I am old school powerlifter and I have deep respect for both. The reason we would say, “If you can't grip it, you don't lift it.” is because if you are in the front line and need to lift something off the ground in harsh conditions, we can’t depend on straps. Train hard, train safe and best of luck. :)

BTW that 1015 raw pull is still standing to this day, probably the single most impressive lift I've ever seen, with Ray Williams' 490kg squat as a close second. Also you can't make a list of greatest deadlifts without mentioning Konstantin Konstantinovs best pull: that absolute unit of a man pulled 426kg without a fucking belt, way more impressive that his 430 with a belt
A man whos not imo getting enough credit is a guy i recently found like a year ago andy bolton he did a 457 deadlift also without straps and now hes in hes 50s i think and he just did a 360 raw deadlift after hes had tons of health issues from what i understand but the man is a animal but i agree bennis lift is insane... edit sry didnt see uncle loz mentioned him
Zydrunas's tire deadlift as has been mentioned was amazing, but to me his deadlift at the wsm 2011 is so inspiring. such a grinder, one of the first and only times we saw Z really use all of his power and go for it. on a wet platform in the rain, no less. a champion's lift (even though he didn't win that year)
That was great thank you, nice explanations for people who may think a deadlift is a deadlift is a deadlift. Nice to see you gave yourself some credit too. My favourite Lamar Gant, first person to lift over 5 times his body weight. Try the math for Eddie and Thor. Thanks again.
As a professional couchpotato i found this video really well made and interesting 👍 I will probably never lift a bar with any sort of weight on it. But your bideo made me far better at judging the effort put in by these lifters and the differences in their sports. Really well done!

Thor 501kg - Probably the greatest deadlifter of all time imo 3. Thor 474kg Elephant bar DL - went up like a speed rep, which is extremely impressive considering Eddie really had to grind to get 465kg on the same equipment 4. Benni's 460kg Raw - First and only man to deadlift 1000lbs+ Raw 5. Jerry Pritchett 465kg at Europe's 2016 - Came in as an underdog and made 465kg look easy despite not wearing a suit, unlike everyone else
My favorite lifts 1) Magnusson 460. Insane. 460 kilos in the hands and the way he lifts this weight and how it put it down. It’s not human. He is a bear. 2) Konstantinov at 426. No belt, no strap for 125 kilos bodyweight. 3) Hall 463. No belt (no T-shirt neither haha) but straps. Why don’t I put the 500 kilos lifts there ? Because I have a problem. I can understand the straps. I can understand the belt. But I can’t understand the suit. Showing the core (belt) and grip (straps) is of course impressive (that’s why I put KK here) but they don’t lift the weight. But when you use the suit you have something to help you lifting the bar. And with that I can’t look at the 500 and feel that it’s the same. I mean if strongmen only use that I could understand but come on Eddy !! You lifted 463 without belt without suit and then you use both of them for the 500. I could understand the belt and I would put it in the top 3. But with the suit I feel like something is missing.
Logan Vervicos I think that’s the point, that it’s not the same. My fav is Benni’s 460 too btw :) Eddie, with straps and a suit, has been the first human to experience a 500kg deadlift. Now it’s just a matter of time before the grip strength catches up to the CNS, then we’ll see the powerlifting go to 500kg+... hopefully in our lifetime.
Some valid points between the two types of deadlift competitions. But my opinion with why strongmen have progressed so greatly with the weight being lifted more than most Powerlifters is because most of strongman movements concentrate on static lifting with a higher hip position like yoke carriers, farmers walk, etc allowing the body to get used to pulling massive weights in similar positions. Whilst powerlifting primarily supplementary training for building of the hip muscles is the squat, which is below parallel. My opinion is if the top strongmen decided to train the deadlift powerlifting style they will develop the grip strength and take all the deadlift records from powerlifters, because they've already built the huge base for lifting massive weights in the higher hip position.
I really like the hype for Eddies deadlift record that he set in Australia, when Arnold came out and was cheering him on. I forget the weight but the story and the moment make for an awesome lift!

I'm glad that you put a logical and easy to understand explanation to this long running debate-- although everyone will have their own opinion and favourite-- I personally like in Bennies raw lift camp...
Hi Loz, Absolutely loved the video! Brilliant explanation about the differences between deadlifting in strongman and powerlifting. My favourite 2 deadlifts are Eddie's and Thor's. Loz, you look totally different in that video of you doing 435 Kg to now (i.e. without the beard). Thank you for making the video. Cheers, Billy
Great video, as always, Loz. Thank you for posting it. Tons of impartial info on the tech of both lifts. I agree that you have to consider these two completely different events, and the elite at either should be respected. At these levels and weights, the slightest alteration in style, form, rules, etc can completely throw a lifter off so I think that explains the difficulty most have transitioning from one to the other. As with most competitive sports, it seems like there will always be those who vehemently defend and support their sport's events as the "best" but, in my humble and unasked for opinion, the true strength fan/athlete can get behind any event and appreciate all the effort and dedication that goes into being at the top. Even within Powerlifting itself, you have di-hard camps of Raw vs equipped, tested vs untested etc. Same applies... the training and tech that goes into a raw squat, as an example, is much different than an equipped squat. You can't compare the records and you shouldn't. Each record holder is the best at their chosen event class. It's been a while since I've paid attention to PL equipment... in the beginning of DL suits they really didn't give much (at least in comparison to squat suits and bench shirts). I'm guessing that's changed? Just curious. Anyway, thanks again Loz. This video is staying in my watchlist so if anyone ever asks, I can refer them to it. I've never seen it explained better.
Didn't know that and it definately adds to the legend / mystique of his performance that day ! He absolutely looked like he had more in him, 20kg more ? Sadly never know :(
Thank you for explaining the differences. Can you do similar videos explaining strongman lifts from a competitors (lifters) point of view. Your insight into the sport and ability to explain the details are informative and entertaining as a fan. Thanks. A new subscriber.
What about big Z at the arnolds with the hummer deadlift. I think you defenetly was top 5 in the world for (strongman) deadlift for max from 2010-2015 together with Z, Brian, Terry and Lalas/Eddie. Loving the RUclips content keep up the great work 👍👍
Yeah, Thor's 501 was a bit of a pisstake tbh. That's like playing poker and raising by a penny. Obviously there's bad blood between the two and it is more frustrating to get beaten by 1kg in very much home conditions, so it very much looks like Thor wanted to deprive Eddie rather than set his own record.
Great video, Loz. You're right. Powerlifting and strongman deadlifts are very different. One thing that you didn't mention was that in strongman, you can roll the bar to give it some momentum before lifting. But in most powerlifting federations - not all - the rules state clearly that the bar must not move before it breaks off the platform. This makes strongman deadlifting "easier" - for certain values of the word - than the equivalent powerlifting version. That must NOT be interpreted to mean that one type of deadlift is "better" than the other. It just means that we aren't comparing like-for-like. As someone who does powerlifting for fitness and fun, I will simply say that fans of iron sports can and should appreciate each type on its own merits.
My favourite deadlift of all time is probably Big Z pulling 1150 (or something like that) on hummer tire Partially because it looks the most impressive imo
Finally someone who I feel is an authority on the subject came and dispelled all the crap between the two very different lifts. Hopefully now people will stop filling comment sections with negative stuff. Thanks again uncle Loz 💪👍
Really good video, I won't go down the whole Sumo thing lol But tbh deadlifts needed explaining, and you've nailed it there. Plus, how many people smile when holding 435kg lol
Of recent memory I'd say Benni's raw lift stands out, amazing. Personal favorite though would have to be from 1972. Franco Columbo 's raw lift of 700lbs for 3 reps weighing only 185lbs (and he wasn't even wearing a belt). That's crazy.
@@BigLozOfficial quite amazing how strong you were with really that much bulk. Around 2014. How did you get over the lat pull Loz? And what does it feel like?
Tom martin has hit 410kg in a deadlift only comp raw at less than 110 bw. One of my favourite lifts for sure. I think he would hit a massive deadlift with a little more bw and a suit
Yeah, I've never completed a pull and thought "Man, that would've been easier if I hitched." If I do get a bit of a hitch, it was because I rushed the rep. All it really gives the athletes in strongman is the leeway to be inefficient. And that Kieliszkowski pull at the Arnold this year was pretty crazy when he managed to hitch some extra whip into the bar and saw through his strap. I would've kept the strap as a souvenir.
Great video again. As big as the numbers are Benni's raw powerlifting record is the most impressive I've seen. Agree that they can't really be compared too closely.
George Leeman has to be tied with Benni as my favorite big deadlifters. I dont thing Georgie ever pulled 1000lbs but his high belted pulls are amazing.
To me Benni's 1015 raw DL will be the best lift of all time until something else crazy happens (maybe a 520+ strongman DL or something). The way Benni just stood up with that weight and gently set it down shows that he had so much more in the tank as well, to this day I wonder what he could have hit at a completely max effort that day
Great clarification. I always hate hearing people criticize the Strongmen for cheating because they're not following a different sport's guidelines. Strongmen lifting originated in practical strength competitions. Powerlifting was a refinement of these original competitions into a very defined sport. People need to realize that throughout the history of Powerlifting there has been many refinements made. Used to be more lifts, such as overhead press and curls. Now there is a division between Raw and Assisted. So the sport continues to change. I personally love Strongman's and Highland Games' continuation of a great heritage of practical strength. I also love powerlifting and Olympic Lifting. They are all unique strength sports.
Although I personally find it most interesting watching the superheavies do their thing, there aren't many lifts that impress me as much as Lamar Gant's 300kg @ 60kg b/w. First man to lift 5x his bodyweight IIRC. Absolutely insane lift!
I so agree, Benny raw lift is the most impressive lift I have ever seen, the fact that he walks up and immediately attacks the bar is the cherry on top.

@Big Loz Official , here's a long post, but please consider reading it as a suggestion for another video. Regarding PL vs Strongman, the most important aspect to consider is that Strongman strength is a gift you're born with, period. In simple words, you are either naturally strong and born that way, or you aren't. It's a gift. In PL, you can gain bar/gym strength by training, but that doesn't mean you're strong outside of the gym (bars are your confort zone). I'll illustrate with an example of mine. On my peak years ago, I did 250 kg deadlifts for reps, 100kg strict log for reps, and always considered myself an amateur Strongman athlete. Nope. Although I don't prefer it, I'm actually a gym lifter only, a PL if I'm being super generous about it. Because outside of the gym, away from bars, I know regular people that are not even gym trained, that can outlift me on everyday natural, irregular objects. Therefore I'm not a strongman, not even near it. . This is a concept a lot of people have a hard time grasping, Strongman is all about being naturally strong, it's a kind of strength you can't gain by lifting bars. Guys like Magnus Samuelsson and Janne Virtanen weren't the best "power lifters" by any means, but they were the definition of strongmen: amazingly strong at irregular objects, beating PLs with EASE whenever they had to move irregular objects. . Nowadays, a lot of disciplines are mixed together, but you could see what I'm talking about clearly in the earlier WSM. Many of the best 80s PLs were beaten with absolute ease by Jon Pall, Reeves, Nummisto, Wolders... Bill Kazmaier was an exception, he was both a PL and Strongman by nature. . It's a hard concept to grasp, but just because someone is strong using bars, it doesn't mean strong in general. This is exactly why Magnus Samuelsson (for example) would absolutely hand Benedikt Magnusson's @ss to him in Strongman competitions, even though Benny would move higher numbers on a bar at any given day. . In my eyes, Strongman is the real showcase of strength. It's the one kind of strength that relates to the basics, if a man is actually strong by nature or not.
Great points. I will be honest any time a powerlifter was in a contest against me I was always happy as I knew it would be easy to beat them: they tend to specialise on the 3 lifts where as a strongman needs to be good at everything. I can hold my own against most powerlifters especially on squats and deadlifts but very few powerlifters if any could match me for moving with farmers or yokes etc.
Bennis raw pull is still my favorite deadlift of all time. No suit, no straps, no hitching, holds the bar at the top and sets it down like a baby. Nobody has ever come close to repeating what he did that day.

Brilliant video loz really well made smashing job 👍
Hi Loz,
Absolutely loved the video! Brilliant explanation about the differences between deadlifting in strongman and powerlifting. My favourite 2 deadlifts are Eddie's and Thor's. Loz, you look totally different in that video of you doing 435 Kg to now (i.e. without the beard).
Thank you for making the video.
Cheers,
Billy
Really helpful! Thanks Loz!
I think I remember hearing that the day benni pulled 460 raw he asked for 480 to be put on the bar but they didn't have enough weight
Didn't know that and it definately adds to the legend / mystique of his performance that day ! He absolutely looked like he had more in him, 20kg more ? Sadly never know :(
Easy 20kg more. The speed that went up. Benni can also hold on and grind out very well when he has to
Thank you for explaining the differences. Can you do similar videos explaining strongman lifts from a competitors (lifters) point of view. Your insight into the sport and ability to explain the details are informative and entertaining as a fan. Thanks. A new subscriber.
Very informative
What about big Z at the arnolds with the hummer deadlift. I think you defenetly was top 5 in the world for (strongman) deadlift for max from 2010-2015 together with Z, Brian, Terry and Lalas/Eddie. Loving the RUclips content keep up the great work 👍👍
Very interesting to learn the differences and how crossovers struggle with certain things
Eddie 500 was the crazies deadlift I ever saw it just crushed the WR by so much.
That Benni lift is amazing! He even had the strength to set the bar back down under full control! Wow...
As someone who does powerlifting for fitness and fun, I will simply say that fans of iron sports can and should appreciate each type on its own merits.
thanks for the education Big Loz
Your 435kg was crazy smooth! Glad you included it
Great video. Thanks.
Your 435 was real smooth
Your 9999kg deadlift its more impresive
My favourite deadlift of all time is probably Big Z pulling 1150 (or something like that) on hummer tire
Partially because it looks the most impressive imo
Finally someone who I feel is an authority on the subject came and dispelled all the crap between the two very different lifts. Hopefully now people will stop filling comment sections with negative stuff. Thanks again uncle Loz 💪👍
Great video Loz.
Love your videos, since they don't have any biases.
Thanks for clearing that up uncle Loz.
You look right in the zone doing that lift. Scary.
Really good video, I won't go down the whole Sumo thing lol But tbh deadlifts needed explaining, and you've nailed it there. Plus, how many people smile when holding 435kg lol
Well...have learned a lot today..
Thank you👏👏👏
Of recent memory I'd say Benni's raw lift stands out, amazing. Personal favorite though would have to be from 1972. Franco Columbo 's raw lift of 700lbs for 3 reps weighing only 185lbs (and he wasn't even wearing a belt). That's crazy.
"I love LOZ but he should include himself at least once, after all he hold the Strongman WR at one point...Oh there he is!"
;) I did some decent stuff once
@@BigLozOfficial you look great with a clean shave too brother. Bring it back!!
@@BigLozOfficial quite amazing how strong you were with really that much bulk. Around 2014. How did you get over the lat pull Loz? And what does it feel like?
@@BigLozOfficial You did some great stuff, your farmer walk carry is one of the best i´ve ever seen
That 435kg lift at the end looked easy for him. I'm sure he could have done more that day. Awesome strongman he is !
Tom martin has hit 410kg in a deadlift only comp raw at less than 110 bw. One of my favourite lifts for sure. I think he would hit a massive deadlift with a little more bw and a suit
Thanks for the explanation
Yeah, I've never completed a pull and thought "Man, that would've been easier if I hitched." If I do get a bit of a hitch, it was because I rushed the rep. All it really gives the athletes in strongman is the leeway to be inefficient.
And that Kieliszkowski pull at the Arnold this year was pretty crazy when he managed to hitch some extra whip into the bar and saw through his strap. I would've kept the strap as a souvenir.
Joel also happens because the bar gets stuck on the legs
Great video again. As big as the numbers are Benni's raw powerlifting record is the most impressive I've seen. Agree that they can't really be compared too closely.
George Leeman has to be tied with Benni as my favorite big deadlifters. I dont thing Georgie ever pulled 1000lbs but his high belted pulls are amazing.
To me Benni's 1015 raw DL will be the best lift of all time until something else crazy happens (maybe a 520+ strongman DL or something). The way Benni just stood up with that weight and gently set it down shows that he had so much more in the tank as well, to this day I wonder what he could have hit at a completely max effort that day
My top 3 favourite were 1015lbs Benedict Magnusson raw deadlift, Halfthor Bjornsson 501 and And Big Loz.
Most entertaining deadlift: mikhail shivlyakov 436kg masters deadlift record. 99% would have given up during that lift.
This is refreshing to hear.
why doesn't this guy have more followers?? #UncleLoz
Thanks for the education, Loz! I know powerlifting can be confusing as I hear the rules differ between organizations.
I agree on your newest video about the different straps You win due to having used the old types of straps
You looked in incredible shape there Big Loz 👏👍
My goal right now is to get back
To that kind of shape
Big Loz Official well you’ve done it once and can do it again ❤️
Although I personally find it most interesting watching the superheavies do their thing, there aren't many lifts that impress me as much as Lamar Gant's 300kg @ 60kg b/w. First man to lift 5x his bodyweight IIRC. Absolutely insane lift!
Uncle Loz back at it again with the bed time stories
Big fan of your channel
Thank you
KK pulling 426/939 Raw without a belt at BW 140/308 is the most amazing feat of strength I've ever seen to this day..
KK and Bolton are definitely my favourite deadlifters ever. They were very explosive.
Uncle Loz you need to superimpose the beard over that last lift so your newer fans can recognize you! 🤣🤣. Great lift!
Thor pulled 410 not 420 in his PL meet I believe. He went 390 410 and failed 430.
I find raw more intriguing. Seems more legit. Really don't like the deadlift suit. Just doesn't seem as impressive to me
