The USA's team of Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Allison Schmitt break the world record to win gold in the women's 4x100m medley in the Aquatics Centre at the London 2012 Olympic Games (4 August).
Australia won silver in the event with Japan winning the bronze medal.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Those 2012 US medley relay teams were ridiculous. This women's team had two gold medalists in the individual 100m events and a silver medalist (plus Allison Schmidt, who didn't swim the individual 100m but won the 200m by like three seconds). Somehow the men's team was even better with three individual 100m gold medalists and an individual bronze.
The USA is always fairly strong, but I think it'll be decades before we see a team as good as that one.

Till the world comes to an end, as far as Olympics is concerned, team USA will be ahead on both fronts. Super team, record breakers

Soni looks like she's got a turbo in lane 6. Her crew chief, Sean Belt, called her "Turbo Up"

The male commentator said that no woman before Missy Franklin had won four golds in one Olympic except for Kristin Otto... what about Amy Van Dyken in 1992?!? And then Amy won two more in 1996!
