  • A behind the scenes look and recap from my time at the Maker Unveil Event checking out the new Maker eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft by Archer! As someone who spends so much time traveling and shooting aerial photos I was incredibly excited by this electric plane to begin with, but seeing the plane in person was mind blowing and made me even more excited. The plane is entirely electric, it takes off and lands vertically so it can easily operate in existing urban environments without big infrastructure demands and it's capable of traveling 60 miles at 150mph, radically changing the way we travel and experience everyday commutes. The thought of being able to travel by air (and shoot photos from the air) without the carbon footprint of a traditional aircraft is a game changer for me - and everyone for that matter. This is the future of aviation and I can't wait to see it unfold. You can learn more about Archer on their website: bit.ly/CBxArcher and on their Instagram: / flyarcher

Johann is correct - this thing is enormous for two seats (look at the height of the wing compared to a Cessna for scale- way over their heads ,no 'ducking required) and the four seat version even bigger - 60 miles range (30 out and 30 back - in still air -much less in any wind ) won't get you out of the suburbs of LA or other big cities - so much for getting back to nature . The environmental cost of all that plastic and toxic batteries is huge --non recyclable thermoset resins and carbon fibre spicules like asbestos if burnt or repairing/damage -- if possible (no back lane body shop fixing possible - disposable just like composite windmill blades are being - landfill at best. Made a living building and repairing composite aircraft from airliners to sailplanes -
cancer and lung damage are side effects of miracle materials . These are the least of their problems though.....

Absurd to talk about sustainability here. It’s a huge vehicle for just a few people that takes a huge amount of energy and recourses in production and when in use (regardless of electric or fuel engine).

It’s a step forward which is better than no step at all

You're so spot on! Lithium batteries manufacturing has disastrous environmental impact, lest we should forget about charging that is powered by fossil fuels. Any green energy is a pipe dream with uncomfortable, cold, hard facts.

    But does it fly?

    • @rossnolan7283

No. They spent, probably a million dollars, on the extravaganza over-the-top PT Barnum style 'unveiling' but didn't even put enough power through their system to make the props turn ! How "realistic " is that ? This is just another clone (identical to Google's patented design who they claim in legal proceedings was pirated by ex employees now working for Archer -- Mark Moore also jumped ship from Uber ) The economics of travel by (three) taxis - two on the ground at each end and one in the flight part of a single trip are unviable for any but the Uber rich . (pun) Will it fly ? Yes just like a barn door with enough power . Will it crash ? Certainly. -the first birdstrike or flockstrike will result in catastrophic "disassembly' in flight - prepare to meet your Maker..... It is fraud to make statements that this thing could ever make any substantial\contribution to relieving road congestion or to 'revolutionizing' transport - carbon fibre composite is old (50 years in sailplanes) high cost tech unable to sustain automotive production rates or costs - by orders of magnitude.
This will end in tears like similar schemes before - Eclipse,Terrafugia,Synergy, other eVtols etc . Be warned .

I can't imagine how much noise pollution there would be if everyone started flying these instead of driving cars...
