Not one to comment on threads but I just wanna say about 9 months ago this video inspired to become an Ironworker, 9 months later I’m up 600 feet on the side of a sky scraper repairing iron with Local 84 Houston getting paid the most I’ve ever gotten paid thanks to god, and this video!! Wish it was that simple to get in out here where I’m at, I know being an ironworker ain’t for everybody but I’ve been trying to get into my local but I don’t have family members or know anyone.

12 years as a JSIW out out of 377. Those were great years. Iron workers are generally good solid people if you are willing to work hard safely and treat others with respect you can earn a good living .
About 2 months ago I was fed up with nursing, carpentry and electrical trades that I’ve been in and out of so I was searching RUclips for trades and found this video. Completed my Ironworker's apprenticeship training in 2002 and later taught in the apprenticeship program. Joining the Ironworkers was one of the best career moves I have ever made.

Ive been doing iron for 6 years. Hanging iron, fabricating, welding, rigging, and reading all prints. Even after all this id love to take these courses.
How do you like it. Will be graduating in less than a month and have my heart set on a trade, just trying to figure out which one I would like to move forward with.

After working as a laborer and an apprentice as a metal stud framer and drywaller, I have been so intrigued in hands on work. Years later after watching the Mohawk Iron workers documentary called "High Steel", this brought me here. Respects!
I had the opportunity to work with a old Ironworker. He worked out of Ironworker local 492 out of tn.He was one of the most intelligent person I have ever worked with. I tried to talk him out of his rigging bible. He worked on a nuclear plant in the early 80s. He was one of the best welder I ever worked with. He could talk to you hours on tying knots and explaining to you what they were used for. Yes this guy is right about math I seen it first hand when the guy I worked with done something. We worked together as maintenance in a factory after he helped build it and help put in the equipment. They offered him a job and he took it. I will never forget the time after working with him at the factory he was helping his old crew putting some silos outback and he was on top and they just got finished and the plant manager was out there looking at them and he seen the old guy on top from where the plant manager was standing it looked like the old guy just walked off the side of the silo but he had put his foot in the hook and the crane was bringing him down. The plant manager started hollering and just about passed out because he thought the old guy just walked off the side.
Working union iron has been one of the best decisions of my life! And your become a part a brotherhood that very few men are a part of. Local 433 LA IRONWORKERS!

Watching this for a good mental refresh. I loved my position in the ironworkers local 378. Hurt myself pretty bad on a Sunday and lost a good portion of my muscle and 2 nerves in my arm, but want to go back... need help👍🏻

Yes love the iron workers and millwrights. Unfortunately I got into pipefitters. Our local was a joke. Representatives screw them every chance they get. They just let them and cry about everything.

Iron W is probably one of the least flooded Unions and trades because not too many people want to be off the ground like that.
Here in Cali the carpenters unions are flooded. Since the 2006-2008 "depression" it seems like 200 out of work carpenters for every one house or building being built.
26 years in, started as a 122. Unfortunately life made me reinstate as a 143.
Been through almost every phase of the trade across five States in that time. I took being a journeyman literally.🤷🏿♂️

32 yr member local 396 st louis...retired 2 yrs ago and yes ...everyday is saturday now 😄😄. for who ever is looking into becoming an Ironworker the pay is good depending on where you work. bennies are great the retirement is awesome something you will never get working non union. even with all the safety its still dangerous and rewarding job. i was lucky i never got hurt to serious broke a thumb...sprained an ankle. but all those yrs did take a tole on my body. bad knees and shoulders made me retire. worked all over the country.

I think it's a good point to make that even though you don't see that your paying for your insurance as a union hand you most definitely are and I actually had a union supervisor tell me he basically pays around 10k+ a year for the insurance that the union offers
I can't speak about any other building trade unions and how they operate but I can confirm as a member in good standing with IW Local 721 in Toronto, Canada, that we do not pay in any shape or form for our pension and benefits premiums. Those are paid directly by employers according to our collective agreement. As such, these additional amounts are considered part of our "total package" (financial gain beyond your hourly pay and for which you have no pay deductions). We do pay our monthly dues, weekly field dues (which is tax deductable when filing taxes) and district council deductions off each pay. The IW International is a strong union. At a time when post secondary education disciplines and their corresponding job market opportunities are completely saturated by people with similar qualifications, a person could grab themselves a very rewarding career by starting an apprenticeship as an Ironworker. Eat up that overtime, work hard, and you can do very well financially.
Im an ironworker out of Local 10 in Kansas City and we make $65/hour. You can earn a lot being a union ironworking.

Michael Sevigny great question! I have the option to work as many or as few hours as I want. For instance, there have been years where I’ve made $55k, not including benefits, and years I’ve made $105k, not including benefits. The benefits are the most important thing though. With benefits that $55k year was actually $120k and the $105k year was $160k. I’ve been in the trade for 7 years and I have $130k in one of my retirement accounts. Then I have a pension fund and health insurance on top of that.
John Gonzales yes you’re correct. The $65/hr is our total package but $9/hr of that $65 goes into one of my retirement accounts. That one retirement account has $130k in it after only 7 years of being in the trade. Then $10/hr goes to my pension and roughly $8/hr goes to my health insurance. So to answer your question we get $34/hr take home pay. But if you read my other comment you’ll see the importance of the benefits.

Good content again man,. I just don't think you've quite put the kabosh on differences between Union and non- Union. For instance actual objective info about the reasons unions exist. And pros and cons of each side. Any way it's a deep subject. Thanks for going after it.

As a guy with only a few years residential plumbing experience under my belt and being 38 years old I am very intrigued and a bit intimidated about joining up with the iron workers. I feel like i should have made this move 10 years ago but here I am looking to go into the trades and join a union. Is it odd to see an apprentice starting out at age 38-39? I appreciate any input and have nothing but respect and admiration for yall

DON'T DO IT! Unless you're looking for a part-time gig. If so then it can be the best part-time job you'll ever have. Watch the politics and keep an eye out for snakes you'll cross paths with alot of em! In some locals there is alot of corruption!

@@elcid4593 you can only work on a project until it's completed. When you finish you are usually laid off and go back to the hall to get back on the available/looking for work list sometimes there are people ahead of you sometimes if the hall is moving the B.A. might call you before you get the chance to get to the hall. Sometimes you may take a backseat to the friends and family of the guy who passes out the jobs. All of these things are factors that can and do take place and should be taken into consideration if and when working outta the hall. Or you can try to latch on steady with a company, there's +'s and-'s that go along with that route to take into consideration also. I'd say over all the thing that will play the biggest part in either feast or famine is what local you are trying to join,the officers on the board of said local and location/territory of the local. When you run union hall by the book and you have enough work to keep all the brothers busy that want to be it can be a great trade to be a part of. In that sense it's the men that make things what they are politically. Or just lay back and watch it go bad. Anyhow good luck to ya.

Considering going into Iron working. Never read a tape measure or used tools for the most part but I work hard and been at the same job for 4 years . If I don't take myself out to learn ill never know

I've been in a bunch of agriculture stuff and in mining the last half dozen years or so. Been told by iron workers that I'm handier than a lot of iron workers. I feel like doing this mining shit is a dead end. I'll turn 30 next year. This has me really thinking that I need to jump ship and get in a union, maybe this one, (I'm not that far away) while I can. Am I too old to bother? I can damn sure keep up physically.
I have thought for a while that I could break out and do my own thing, specializing in pump, screen, and equipment repair.
But now I'm not so sure this wouldn't be better.

Millwrights/UBC just do whatever work they can win even if it's another trades work. They're just scabs that have union cards. That's why the UBC got kicked out of the AFL-CIO.
I hate that we have almost nothing like that in the UK. My closest trade school is almost 40 miles away and it only teaches plumbing, electrics and bricklaying.

You guys have it easy in the US. I’m spending a lot of money on half assed qualifications to become an electromechanical technician. There is nothing even close to this where I’m from.

Getting into ironworking is easier than this video described in the begging... I recommend if you are determined to become one start non union for six months get the hang of it then go union. You may get shittier pay and benefits but it gets your foot into the door for better opportunity. Which is union. Unless your employer has the same benefits as union. Then I don't discriminate. Proud ironworker here (rodbuster woman) my local is 725 .

Has anyone here worked with or is a type 1 diabetic in ironwork? I am a type 1 and worry about time to take insulin or correct my low blood sugar during the job if I were to go into ironwork.

Some columns and canopy systems are made of pipes. I’m an ironworker I have my 6g certs I’ve never welded an actual pipes for water or gas on a job but I have welding structures made from pipe
@@k11keeper It also helps that rather than the traditional 3 plate test, AWS states you can take one 6g test to certify all positions. Saves time on inspec/testing in my opinion.

35 year millwright/ ironworker. Non union. MSHA part48 under ground mine. Only thing i got from the union was , slashed tires on my truck with there local stickers pasted all over the windows. I cold say more ..

Proud non union multi process, fabricator, millwright. Unions have good guys in it, but a lot of over paid morons as well that think their shit dont stink. Non union gets rid of those guys a lot quicker.

I'm not against unions as a whole, but I've found myself on the non-union side because of similar issues. I was running a job and had an electrical inspector come in and give my electricians hell. They are non-union but are damn good at their job. He wouldn't say it, but reading between the lines, he essentially implied that because my guys weren't union he was going to get the job shut down. I suspect that he was put up to it by the local IBEW, but I obviously can't prove it. In any case, we took it up with the fire marshall, and he forbade that inspector from setting foot on the job site again. This is why I have issues with unions. I know there are good members who only want to work and are good at their jobs. It's the other bullshit that I hate.
Having worked union and non union crews erecting metal building, I have many war stories. My nonunion crew could easily install a metal walk door in an hour. The union crew would set the door steel frame, then the union carpenter would hang the door, then the union sheet metal worker would trim out the door. Although the union guys might complete the door installation in a day, it was usually 2 or 3 days depending on the trade availability. Had a pickup truck dynamited in Baton Rouge, La but I blame myself for going to Louisiana in the first place.

Accurate video but a few topics were a bit exaggerated on his part. Things as he explains don't happen near as fast or sometimes even at all. Like if you get laid off you get put on an out of work list, which depending on the amount of people on it you could be out of work for weeks to months. Also the pension is good but its not like you can just go on endless vacations. You still have to be smart with your money if you have no additional income.
If you go to the IW and have been welding outside of union and pass the test do you still need the apprenticeship? Also have certs/work exp. with rigging, BPs, safety, etc?

yea. I have 7years ironworking field experience welding certs lifts and fork lifts certs I have install many many of staircases railing and structural stuff and still I need to do apprenticeship witch I cant afford such a big check cut so im still non union :(
Paweł s exact same for me. I have all the training they get in the apprenticeship already from outside Union work. Kinda a shame there isn’t a fast route or something for guys with years of exp. and certs to just jump up instead of relearning the same things over and over
