- Alright! I'm messing around with some new video equipment and shooting some fun timelapse stuff! In this one I show you my process from start to finish of making this comic:

I'm using a Cintiq 27HD for my comics. For software, I pencil and ink in Clip Studio Paint and then color and letter in Photoshop. Хобби
Man seeing you use reference pictures like that it’s such a relief. I always feel kind of guilty for doing it like that but I seeing other people doing it it’s so reassuring
Same
^Truth. In addition, take note of what Scott is doing here; he's using his own photos. Bad situations come up if you're tracing over other people's photos that you didn't have permission to use... If you don't change it up enough in your drawing and someone recognizes it, things can get ugly. Real ugly. Always best to use your own photos, 3D poses/scenes, etc.
you guys arent referencing, youre tracing and its pathetic lol
@@sinaptic What he said, it's almost like the same thing when artists sometimes take a picture of their own facial expressions to get a better gist of what they're gonna draw. All in all, there's no shame in drawing with references so long as you have permission to use them, though I'm pretty sure there are tons of free references as well out there but you get the idea.
@@dddaaa6965 Yeah, I’m all for using reference photos, but that’s heavy usage of them. For backgrounds it’s pretty normal, but for every character on the page is excessive and borders on plagiarism if you’re not using your own material. All the more important to learn the fundamentals of figure and gesture drawing so you don’t have to rely too heavily on references in the first place.
the hardest part for me drawing is posing, and thanks for showing me how photo reference can help big time.
For foreshortening what lens is best used for dramatic effect? 24 enough?
24mm is a great length on Full Frame cameras for a nice wide angle! On APS-C sensors, it gets cropped, so a 15mm is the equivalent, so make sure you know what kind of camera you're using. I think it's all personal preference, though. Play around with it and find what works for you! I like to sketch out what the idea is first, then try to make the photo match, not just shoot whatever and hope that works in my layout. That way, it's still my layout that drives the composition, not whatever I did in-camera, if that makes sense. :)

i guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb lost the password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Jamison Jude instablaster :)
@Moises Kabir I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm trying it out now.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Nice! 👍 I also take photo. Its a really good time saver, and I can focus on details.
Great work man. Really inspiring!
Thanks so much! :D

Very talented you are. Thanks for sharing!
Just found this channel, looking forward to sifting through your vids. Great stuff, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much! And welcome! :)
Loving this! Particularly the use of the photo reference!
Thanks so much!
Cool video.. I love your drawing process.. Hopefully we get to see more videos of it.
Thanks, bud! Got more on the way! :D
Thankyou so much for posting this!!
beautiful!
very cool office - thanx for the insight
I work with references too, but since I'm a one man band I first design my panel with 3d software and then use that render as my reference. Just a tip.
Nice. Yeah, I try to design with sketches first so I don't limit myself with software, if that makes sense. Sometimes if I'm working 3D or reference first, I'll just use that, even if I might have been able to come up with a better idea by sketching. Just easier to bang out concepts for me, personally. But hey, whatever works!
thanks for sharing this view of you as a professional artist :)

this is golden
Three years later and this video is still helpful. When I first started I thought using reference photos was cheating but it actually helps me! I just got clip studio paint and idk how to use it yet (haven’t found a good tutorial) but I heard CSP and photoshop have the same interface which I hope so because I’m currently in school for graphic design and we’re learning photoshop. I know they say the hardware doesn’t matter but having a bigger screen helps me draw more comfortably. Anyways man thank you so much for sharing this video!
Hey Shin, glad to hear it! My latest video is a deep dive in everything a new user needs to get started using Clip Studio Paint. It’s the one of me doing a panel at a convention, so I try to cover all the basics to get people up and running. Hope it helps! Thanks much, and take care!
@@ScottD thank you I’m definitely going to check it out because I would like to get started as soon as possible!
And then I look at my poor cartoon-like style and I cry xD
I used to have a VERY cartoony style! It was something I went back and forth on for a while. For this book, though, I wanted it to feel a little more "grown up", so I shifted to working on natural proportions and making sure I was using a lot of reference to get things looking less cartoony. I miss doing super stylized stuff sometimes, but I think there's a time and place for both, depending on the tone you want to go for! :)
@@ScottD well, someone told me to try to release that comic when I finish it, but I don't feel good about it. It's silly and the drawings are weird sometimes. But I will try if I get better markers etc. Thanks for reply.
@@malphite8797 You should! I'm going to let you in on a secret: No one is 100% happy with their comic art! We all have doubts and see every flaw, but that's okay, because if someone else enjoys it, then its done its job.
I've got a buddy whose comics I LOVE, and he just does them in pencil on copy paper. Just make cool stuff, don't worry too much about your tools, just try to get the look you want, and keep improving.
Make cool stuff! Tell cool stories! Put them out there for the world!
Silly and weird comics are great; don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :)
@@ScottD hah, thanks! DC Lobo comics are also silly and the art of it is simple, but his short stories are funny and it has pretty nice dark humour. But I need to get new equipment because Im almost out of markers :p
Really nice
Awesome! Thanks

I’m a portrait artist but I want to get into making comics this is gonna be hard😭
Really cool videos.
Idea for a new vid: How to get commissioned work!
I'm hired on a couple of projects right now, but as a new artist on the block, that's where I needed the most guidance a part from drawing technique, internet can be really easy to find work on, but also very dispersive!
Thanks so much! Honestly, the best advice I can give is to create your own comics, put your head down and make them for 5-10 years, go to conventions, meet artist peers, introduce yourself to editors and try to make good stuff. You just gotta get your work in front of the right people (without being annoying) and the jobs will come eventually! It just takes a long time, and sometimes, even if you think you're ready, you're not, which is not what people want to hear, but it's true. I know that's how I used to be before I got some really good crits on my work and had to really push it to get it to pro level. There's always ways to make your stuff better, so keep improving, keep pushing, and keep making friends with cool, like-minded people, and it'll all happen eventually.
That said, yeah, I should probably do a video about it, since I just wrote a whole paragraph. haha
@@ScottD Yeah, that's exactly how I went about it! It's more difficult here in Italy because the market is not as wide as USA, but I managed to get my stuff out there and seen by people, and in 2019 I've had 8 books published, I'm now working on a 6 issue title, and have more stuff ready to go. It's just that for a novice it's really hard to understand what's the right way to get noticed, and I thought that might be an interesting topic. I love how clear and to the point you are in your videos, it might be a good topic to discuss in the future.
@ Thanks! And yeah, I agree! Getting work is weird and difficult and kind of a crap shoot until it just starts hitting.
is that 11x17 canvas? and do I need to keep the bleed/trim lines in mind too when drawing digital??
It's not. I have my canvas set to-size for my pages, but at 1200dpi, so it's almost like working on an 11x17" canvas, since there are so many pixels. But yeah, you absolutely have to keep bleed trim lines in mind if you ever want to print your work. If it's digital and will always be digital, you could skip them, but I think it's better to be on the safe side and just include them, in case your plans change in the future. It's easy to set up, so might as well.
Amazing
So, how long did it actually
take to complete the page?
excellent.
Amazing artwork bro
Thanks so much!
@@ScottD ,No problem bro ,keep it up
I just started using Clip Art Studio for my work and viewed some of your videos. I am wondering how you make and retrieve sound effect fonts. This is a point of pain for me. Can you assist me with some advise or a tutorial?
Blambot.com and ComicBookFonts.com are great resources for sound effect fonts! That's where I get all mine. Try to vary the size and base of each letter to make it look like it's hand-done. That's a good tutorial idea, though!
Scott Drummond Thanks, Scott, can’t wait until your next video
Hi, I have a question about the panel borders and your artwork on this page. How did you arrange it so that the panel mask allowed the artwork to extend over the confines of the panel border, but the border is being drawn?
I have my inks on a layer ABOVE the frame borders, not inside them, and then have a layer between the inks and frame borders that is white that I mask out the panel border with. You could also put the panel border in a folder and then put a mask on the folder to achiever the same effect.
@@ScottD ah! Much less complicated than I feared... haha. Thanks for the quick reply and the explanation, love your channel
The music is good
Hey Scott where did you get that giant drawing tablet/computer thing from. Because I could very well use one of those
It's a Wacom Cintiq 27HD! This one I actually bought used from Skottie Young. He had mentioned that he was thinking of selling it, and didn't want to bother with eBay or whatever, so since we're buds and live in the same city, I just popped over and got it from him.
I had a few other Cintiqs (a 20" and a 22") that I bought off Amazon or maybe even Wacom's website, I think? It was years ago.
@@ScottD cheers
Wow!!!!
What is the size you use to make comics
awesomeeeeeeeeeeee
Where’d you learn how to do this
Are you just exporting the image form Clip Studio as a single layer to then color in photoshop? I'm on an iPad so I'm not sure if it's a different system. Also, I have now watched like A LOT of your videos as I try to learn Clip Studio so I just bought your book on Gumroad for $30 instead of 5 to say thank you.
First off, thanks so much for being so generous with the book! That's super kind of you. I appreciate it!
And yes, I'm just exporting a single layer B/W image from CSP to PS. I love working in tons of layers, but when I move to color, I like to simplify things. I'll sometimes change the color of layers in CSP that I want to do color holds on later, but it's still exported as one flat image, and then I go in and delete all the white behind it.
@@ScottD thanks. it's these tiny bits that make transferring to digital really overwhelming and your videos have helped a lot.
You are amazing. I would very much like you to help me with some sketches for a story.
Aapne konsa tools use kiya hai 😟🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Screencap is best for that kind of stuff.
If you draw digitally that is.
Yeah, I do that, too! Sometimes I like to see how an artist physically moves their arm/hand to make the marks, though, so I thought this could be a fun change of pace. :)
Hey bro, what program do ya use to make comics?
I use Clip Studio Paint for my pencils and inks, and move over to Photoshop for my colors and letters. :)
Great video Scott! Everything done in Photoshop, yeah?
Sketch, pencils and inks in Clip Studio Paint. Colors and letters in PS. :)
@@ScottD Cool. When all that is finished, you take all that into InDesign ready for printing? I have a Ka-Blam template do you use a template?
Hey Scott! Great video! My idea for a video tutorial is to show us what your keyboard shortcut/quick access set up is.
BTW, I bought your inking brushes and have to say after years of buying brushes for Clip Studio, those are the most useful brushes I have ever run across. They are my go to brushes every day in my work! Thanks and all the best!
That's a great idea! Yeah, I've been wanting to make a "how I set up my CSP" video for a while. I've got two new videos in the works right now, so maybe I'll do that one once I wrap those up.
And I'm glad you're enjoying the brushes! I need to do an update to the set with some new ones I've added. :)
@@ScottD Awesome, let us know when the new ones are out, I'll snap em up!
What application are you using to do you’re coming book
I do my thumbnails, pencils and inks in Clip Studio Paint, then I export a flat PSD and color and letter in Photoshop.
what's the canvas size tho
Man I wish I could get you to help me with my comic...it's like batman+daredevil +metal gear solid 3+hitman+rdr2 kind of did a fusion.
what software was that he's using?
Clip Studio Paint for Pencils/Inks. Photoshop for Colors/Letters.
How do rotate and zoom without pressing any key?
I press R to bring up the Rotate tool and Z to bring up the Zoom tool, and then click and drag to use them.
Your so cool
I thought the big models of Wacom had touch function?
Most do, but I turn it off because Wacom's touch is super finicky and actually works TERRIBLY with Photoshop.
What tablet is that you are using?
I use the Wacom 27 HD. It's an older model that they don't make anymore. The model that I would probably get now is this one: amzn.to/3pZAjQZ
I also do a lot of iPad drawing, and I'd probably recommend an iPad Pro with Clip Studio Paint if you're looking for a complete digital comics package for under $1k. amzn.to/3tHpsxh
i wish i had such a tablet. its so much easier to create and store any work pieces. if only i weren't so broke lmao
When I started making comics digitally, I had a 4x6” Wacom Graphire tablet (no screen) with 512 levels of pressure. That little guy served me well for many years and I made so much fun stuff on it. It’s not about the hardware, it’s about the work you put in! :)
@@ScottD that is pretty reassuring. i have been drawing comics traditionally for about 3 years. its such a hassle to properly ink and color my works without any gear.
@@wilburscoot4621 Yeah, you need some sort of tablet, screen or no, to really get it to work right. Luckily, there are some nice cheap ones to dip your toes in, and then you can see what works for you!
hi what is the name of the application
I use Clip Studio Paint for Thumbnails/Pencils/Inks and Photoshop for Coloring/Lettering.
What software are you using in this video
Clip Studio Paint for the pencils/inks. Photoshop for the colors/letters. :)
@@ScottD thanks so much ❤️
I thought that was the cintiq 24 pro... I have it and I just mistook yours for myne XD
Ha! Yeah, I've got the 27. It's a monster!
What IS this Screen
It's a Wacom Cintiq!
0:38 why do you mention that?
Just to give you guys a peek behind the curtain! haha :)
is this adobe illustrator?
Clip Studio Paint
You are look like Brain Shaw
Drawing through the computer seems like to much work, l'd prefer to do it old school.
Drawing on paper is more work for me, since I have to scan it! haha
Is he actually drawing
Can confirm, he is.
Source: Him.
Is that mannequin behind you...naked?? No jk, i have those too.
Ha! Yeah, they come in pretty handy sometimes! The guy one is great, but the girl's proportions are so unrealistic, I rarely use her for poses. But you gotta keep looking around until you find what works for you, I guess. :)
What value is this to anyone, it was just a blur.
I don`t like the speed. It is to fast and make me sick.
Well you do not explain the way, you just draw it. For those who knows nothing of digital drawing it's useless. Just a speed up video that helps nothing.
4:27 isn’t this... cheating and lacking of style ? Since we are in 2021 I must also say: It is not an insult.
Are you referring to pulling up a photo of a warehouse and using it as reference? Or taking photos for poses and placing them on the canvas to save time? Either way, I talk about "is using reference cheating?" in depth here: ruclips.net/video/dkEo1GSbu0g/видео.html
origano, yes it is, but look at this soy slob, are you surprised he takes the easy and lazy way out? it looks horrible and anyone with a brain can see he traced everything
would've been better if i we could see the screen only, still a nice vid though
