This is probably my favorite guitar instrumental of all time. He plays it so perfectly and doesn't get lost in trying to play fast all the time, it builds energy and then the solo just blows you away. He's amazing.
I totally agree. His sense of melody is what truly sets him apart. Like you say, he's actually quite restrained in large sections of this but at moments just shows his mind boggling technique.

I know, his balance of melody and shred is astounding. He plays always at the right moments and shreds at the perfect moment, too. Cause if it was all just melody it would be kind of boring and also if it was all shred it would lose its musicality.

No matter how, see that some play thousands of notes but without felling or good tone, Reb plays the precise notes clean and with an incredible tone, I think that these characteristics differentiate an elite guitarist from the rest.
True, I’ve seen many shredders but none of them have the same phrasing and feel that Reb Beach, Guthrie, ore even Buckethead have.
Have seen various versions of this tune over the years and it still gives me chills, especially the tapping ... incredible guitar player
Guitars that Rule The World..a compilation album released by Metal Blade featuring several legends such as Yngwie; Skolnick, Sambora, Zakk Wylde, Nuno, Paul Gilbert, Albert Collins etc...those record executive knew Reb's "Black Magic" was the best so they had to put it as track no.1. Honestly his playing was well ahead of his time, nobody was doing those intricate melodic cross string tapping better than him

Was always a fan of Reb i used to have his REH instructional video back in the early 90s. By the way this song is on an album called ' Guitars that rule the World' released in 1990....

The Reb friggin rocks! His tone is Top Shelve!
So fun to watch, even though Reb uses EMG active pickups, it's a very warm almost natural sound he gets out of them. I would put that down to how Reb is able to phrase his guitar lines. It's becoming a lost art these days. But Reb does it flawlessly and with consistency. That's what separates the good from the great players.
@@wabashvalleycards2082 it does, Reb alternates between an EMG '85 to an '89 Humbucker, but however Rebs Suhr Moderne koa bodied guitar (not his signature model) does have other pickup options besides EMGs.
