I love the direction polygons been going in lately. Overboard is one of my favourite series on this channel and I’m glad to see more of that in addition to these video essays. They combine the weird and quirky elements of old polygon with a more professional and intriguing format. I enjoy it immensely. Unravelled feels at home amidst Simone’s take on Pokemon Go, Pat’s festival of blood , and this video.
The use of 3D models to illustrate points in recent videos has been really cool! It adds a lot of visual interest and is legit helpful, but mostly i love "my existence is pain"
I wouldn't call it "videogames lie", more like, "gamers crap on developers because they don't know the TONS of hard work they put in, so here's some info on how game devs work really hard to make you feel like a hero."
i will never stop admiring how amazingly smooth the environments in mirrors edge: catalyst are. it’s become my go to game to relieve some of my anxiety because even the fights end up coming across almost choreographed, something i can’t find in other games. for instance, assassins creed was my introduction to parkour games, and as much as i love the series, the fighting always comes off so clunky in comparison to the parkour mechanics it makes it more difficult for me to enjoy in the same way.
0:51 - 1:02 Exactly. I remember when I was playing Mirror's edge for the first time I was running headfirst towards what looked like a big gaping nothing from a distance and my mum would tell me to slow down or I'll fall off the roof and die, but of course, I kept going and I jumped not even seeing the pipes that I ended up grabbing on to. Sure, in real life I might have died, but I could follow my intuition without fear of death.
@@IronMoose95 Yeah, I'm with @Discoh on this one, I need some citations. I did some searching but i couldn't find anything. Could you please give us a link?
this is stupid........everyone knows that to pull off any of these easy stunts, all you need to do is scream "PARKOUR" BEFORE each jump which then triggers the Parkour motor skills central nervous system to take over and perform the stunt for you.
Original Mirror's Edge was great fun. Even though I unfortunately leave a lot of games unfinished, Mirror's Edge was one that I played through to completion years ago.

I love this video essays! Jenna is amazing as always and the experts you guys are bringing in to explain stuff are awesome as well! Very cool to take a peek into the videogame magic. :)
1:36 HOLY S***! And i thought Nier Automata did amazing music sound engineering (it still does but damn, just imagine if EA didn't rush Mirrors Edge Catalyst into the terribad ending with no sequel in sight)
edge detection ruins parkour in assassin's creed, it makes you jump where you DON'T want to, it's not a assistance, I prefer to die because I jumped at the wrong direction than wasting time because this "assist" made me jump to the wrong roof.
I'm curious about how the opposite mechanics in a (theoretical) parkour game about a beginner could be fun and informative; anti-flow, or the innate fear from not trusting any of your limbs, the frustration at not quite being strong enough to do a move yet, and the intense satisfaction of doing something, however tiny and literally centimetres from the ground, that you couldn't do last time.
I remember back during earlier Assassin's Creed games you had to hold circle to activate the "pity help", otherwise your guy would just jump right past a railing that was a bit too high to land on, instead of grabbing it and pulling himself up. That was my "oh shit, i missed a jump and now am plummetting to my immediate death. Hold Circle and try to hold on to literally anything" button.
The real question is why rolling in original mirrors edge slows faith down when in real life rolling after a jump can actually give you a sick ass speed boost as you get up
Hmm, my guess would be that because visuals are pretty much the only spacial awareness you get, and during rolling you can't see anything, it could be disorienting to end up too far away from where you landed in just a second. But it would've been nice to be able to convert vertical momentum directly to horizontal in Mirror's Edge...
@@granite_planet i hear you, looks like a pretty sound reason. you could just calculate where you'd end up beforehand.... but it *was* one of the earliest parkour centric FPS games so they probably thought the players'd likely have a hard time with spatial awareness ahh... i miss mirrors edge
Google coaches in your area, you might get lucky! Start slow and tiny - the people who film themselves have all probably trained for decades - and have fun! :D
I spend an unhealthy amount of time out of every week searching for new parkour games... I've either already played them all, or I can only find simple platforming games that aren't parkour at all :( I want a game with the gameplay and POV of Mirror's Edge Catalyst but with an actual open world, vehicles, character customization, coop, player progression (like stats, not just unlockable skills),.. that sort of thing! Watch Dogs 2 is a really good example of a game that has most of what I'm looking for.

For all that don't know, if you play any level of competitive game and start to win streaking and feel in the "zone", you're also experiencing a level of flow. Even in video games.
All kinds of sports and games and activities (even work!) can put you in a flow state because so much of what we do is just down to mentality and confidence.
@@granite_planet Yep since the original video didn't include it and kinda describe as this magical state that free runners get, I wanted to make sure others new that flow is everywhere whenever you're in the zone
"The movement in recent Assassin's Creed games feels so good" Yeah, if you consider 2014 and 2015 "recent" for Assassin's Creed. Because 2017 and 2018 ACs had VERY ugly robotic movements
Part way through the video, but I want to say Warframe has replicated at least a part of real life parkour, which is seeing a good line through some obstacles. The movement itself (it’s called bullet jumping in the game) is more like jumping and gliding, but the awareness of space feels similar. Edit: Just wanted to add that Warframe replicates the feeling of parkour with more “video game” style movement that allows more consequence to failure but less hand holding and frustration. If you mess up you’re just a little slower, there isn’t any weird animations or dead stops.
the freerunning/parkour was one of the few redeeming qualities about AC:Unity, and it has never been as good in subsequent games. Plenty of other improvements in them, but the climbing was never again as good.
