RIP Dio: yhoo.it/aGpnKJ
LCD Soundsystem's third and final album is an ambitious trip into the sounds of dance and rock fusion. A lot of strong influences coming from the 70s and 80s on this one--especially from the realms of post-punk, disco, and new wave. I already have an affinity for this music, so it was fantastic to hear a modern band just do it right. LCD has really built upon a classic sound this time around; bringing a style back with sincerity, and putting their own spin on it, too. Great songs, melodies, lyrics, and grooves. Hardly a scratch on this thing. I felt a little underwhelmed by one track, and I'm happy that's my biggest complaint. I can hardly nit pick on this thing.
What do you think about this album? Love it? Hate it? Why?

@@spamsingles5948 that’s because KSG is too short, it’s definitely a 10 it’s just unfair because it’s so short
@@Windows98. KSG is rough around the edges and short. It’s fantastic and promising but not a 10.
@@hydrodragonn7385 the “rough” aspect is intentional and executed very well, kind of like IGORS mixing versus Cherry Bombs
@Astral yeah after revisiting KSG it’s deserving of a 10 and lyrically drunk girls is the worst song on the album, but in terms of its placement it fits in sonically

I love how they use the "oh" of Dance Yrself Clean in Home too in a different way. And speaking about Home, this album has one of the best endings I've ever heard.
The Home bassline is also from Losing My Edge
absolutely, one of the best closers ever. Only one i can think of that i've heard since that even comes close is "Paths in the Sky" from Metric's Formentera in terms of wrapping up the themes from a fun, yet intensely thoughtful listening experience on a positive note.
@ScifiSaints I understand man. The LP is petty long-winded, but I can't help but just enjoy the grooves on every track. Even if I'm sitting down, I can't help but move at least some part of my body when I hear this album. I've got a strong dance music bias in me, which really makes me enjoy the beats + the synths. And I WILL admit a lot of those synth sounds are cheezy, but I feel like this LP needs the cheese to keep things light and fun. Thanks for watching / commenting / being awesome. :-)

I prefer You Wanted a Hit
"Home" is not only my favorite track on the album but also my favorite song of all time.

I've watched this video several times. I love this album so much, I usually can't listen to albums from beginning to end, but this is one of few albums that I've listened to that I love LITERALLY ever song. LCD makes me feel so many emotions all at once. Great review, Anthony.

i think that "dance yrself clean" is one of the best songs I've heard in the past 5 years
Dance Yrself Clean!
Dance Yrself Clean was my #1 on my spotify wrapped like 5 years in a row. I always find myself adding it to one of my playlists
This review was my first introduction to the group - just bought it on vinyl and it sounds phenomenal. Figured I’d come back and thank you❤️
Honestly, I prefer this album to Sound of Silver. The only thing holding it back for me is that I think "All My Friends" and "New York, I love you" are better songs than anything on here except for maybe "Home". "All I Want" and "I Can Change" are some absolute favorites though
They both have like 3 amazing songs and the rest are equally exciting. Sound of silver might have the upper hand but I think I enjoy this is happening a bit more
this album is 100% a classic now
It’s been 10 years, I click on the video for one of my favorite albums and I see my like, still here, from way back then. Nostalgic, Congrats for being around this long Anthony!!
"you wanted a hit" might literally cure cancer with its intro and is criminally underappreciated in this comment section
I’m two years late but I wished I loved it more. Just heard this record and it’s really stayed on the fence for me despite loving the majority of these tracks
with the 200 albums of the decade list this might actually be a 10
@CroOokedTeEth well, i can't. youtube would take the vid down, bro. :-( sorry. i always link you guys to 2 or 3 tracks inside the dbox, though. don't you check those out?

"This is a dance floor, not a ballet son."
IT COULDA BEEN A 10
oliwer pietryszek he gave it 5/5 on rym btw
It was number (5 or 6?) on his albums of the decade list, above the 10/10 Kids See Ghosts, so I guess it kinda was.
Forgettable Name KSG is a 10 based on him enjoying everything there, This is Happening has one song he doesn’t like but the project is all in all is much more satisfying

I love All I Want
Joshua Gomez Heroes- David Bowie
@@atrijitdas1704 exactly! i wonder why anthony didn't mention bowie's huge influence on this album. on the track "one touch" james murphy's singing sounds exactly like david. murphy himself said he was inspired by him.
@@atrijitdas1704 Honestly I love heroes but not only do I like this track more but I'll say they're definetly not the same. The influence is obviously undoubtable but I think even though the sample is repeating it does so in a way that reinvents the sound and seperates it from heroes
Dance Yrself Clean. Best track imo.
LCD is back they are back from the grave !!!!! RIP death of LED soundsystemthey are back
Ir's interesting that you were able to associate YMO, James White, and Talking Heads with this band so early in your career considering those artists are all so different form one another. Where did you find the time to listen to all of them? I'm 21 and in college and can barely find the time to listen to the essentials. It's like you've heard everything on the planet hahaha
You gotta remember, he listens to music as part of his full time job, that means he is finding new music in the time where we are working either without music or listening to what we already like
@@jacobsarvathayaparan2337 That's true, but it wouldn't have always been a full time job for him. It takes time to build an audience and to monetise. He obviously cares deeply enough for music to have been doing this for such a long time, particularly during the years when it wasn't paying the bills.
@@FoxymoronOfficial He also worked in a college radio station before RUclips I believe, so that definitely aided his search for good music and time to listen to new stuff constantly.
I thought LCD soundsystem sounded like talking heads when I was like 12
I mean... It's not easy... He's the internet's busiest music nerd
Love how the album begins with Kermit talking
Personally, this is my favourite album of the year and by far LCD Soundsystem's best album. It pickes up where 'Sound of Silver' fet off and really cements LCD Soundsystem as one of the define bands of this generation. With this album I feel I can hear a progression in their music, Favourite track; 'Home', least favourite track; 'Somebody's Calling Me', Favourite Moment; (rather elongated but,) tracks 'I Can Change', 'You Wanted A Hit' and 'Pow Pow', I just love these 3 tracks.
You just got me into this album! Great piece of work and I think the first I’ve ever heard of LCD
i'm pretty excited to listen to this album now. thanks for another excellent review.
Is it possible to marry this record? Omfg the first time I ever listened to LCD Soundsystem I was like eh it's okay and after a couple of more listens I'm hooked as hell
This album not be a ten is crime, is fucking amazing the progression and emotional feeling on home is so absurd it gives me chills and the instrumentation on you wanted a hit is so insane like it very much its my favorite album from lcd besides sound of silver which is my favourite
I'm pretty sure is a 10 for him now. Like, he put it higher than some "official" 10s in his best of the decade list.
Got that 80s training video look.
Man I am baffled by those who didn't like this album. I felt like this was an incredible work, start to finish. Long run pieces that resist the pressure to stay under the four minute mark. Each song is really well structured, great dynamics, build, and climax. Displays a great love of dance music and synth, with punk and alt rock sensibilities. I also think it's quite unique in its sound, a real accomplishment in this day and age. So you wanted a hit? We don't really do hits.
Loved It!
Hearing dance yrself clean in a club will change your life!!!
but besides that the whole album is wonderful.
I found that "Somebody's calling me" is more of a slow dance song, it's kind've droning but I like that about it. My least favourite is "You wanted a hit" because it sounded too generic and same-y to a lot of other songs.
TheIsaroph really? I feel the exact opposite. Someone is calling me was meh and I loved you wanted a hit. Home is probably my fav
I feel like its kind of a shout out to 'The Idiot' era Iggy/Bowie production (as is a lot of this record), specifically 'Nightclubbing' As an homage its nice, but it is a little taxing to listen to.
i enrolled in pre kindergarten about 3 months after this video came out, and ten years later, a day after my
14th birthday, I love this album so much alongside Sound of Sliver and the debut.
(Edit: I just got the album on vinyl....it's on first spin rn. It's playing the C Side with You Wanted A Hit and Pow Pow.)
If you’re 14 and you like LCD soundsystem you’re officially cool
I love the nine inch nails reference and I totally see it too. I have been really getting into early nin the past 6 months... I realized how deeply rooted they were in dance music so it really started to appeal to me.
Good review! I love the needle drop!!!
@rsfaan91 Yeah, it does. In fact, it sounds almost exactly like Bowie's "Heroes." Is this a bad thing? I've always thought copying was the most sincere form of flattery, frankly.
Hey
Loved this whole album except Somebodys Calling Me. When that heavy synth comes in on Dance Yrself Clean i knew i would love it. Also, Home might be my favorite overall track. Excellent follow up to Sound of Silver.
Man, so far 2010 has had some amazing albums.
All right man. Its 2:07 in the morning and I just watched your review on Plastic Beach. I consider myself a man of good musical taste. Every movement has a feel, and when I explore the surface, and eventually the depths, of a genre I like to think I can pick out some of the prominent and in a sense logical artist. Plastic Beach, to me, is a rare and perfect album. I've only thought that towards less than ten albums today.. They got a 7, LCD Soundsytem got a 9. I'm giving this band a chance.
Guessing you liked them? I agree on Plastic Beach
nice review. i feel the same way about "somebody's calling me". this album is full of a lot of nods/references to other great songs, at least sonically, like "white light/white heat" and "heroes", but the nod to "nightclubbing" while not bad just doesn't blossom like many of LCD's tracks.
"I Can Change", "Pow Pow", "All I Want" and "Home" are my faves, and the sublime balance of synth chords and a punk state of mind on "You Wanted a Hit" makes me "...feel like a teenager".
Nice review Anthony. I personally love the new LCD album. Was at Friday and Saterday in NYC, great shows, James Murphy is the man... Hit the nail on the head with the Talking Heads connection, couldnt agree more.
I used to "like" LCD Soundsystem. Now I love them. I think most of their best songs come off of This Is Happening.
this was my first melon video. thank you for giving me permission to like music for over a decade.
This is his secret 10
I'd love to know his thoughts on Sound Of Silver and their debut
he said lcd was one of his favorite bands of all time, so he probably loved those too
how could you love this but not like sound of silver?!
I think he loves both he's mentioned their first three albums in other reviews as being staples of the genre
He gave it a 10 I'm pretty sure
Gran Flakes he said sound of silver is a 10
Another fantastic review, Anthony. I love this record. I agree with your bit about Somebody's Calling Me. It has definitely grown on me since, though my favourite song is All I Want. Having said that, every track is wonderful, and I was especially taken by the echoing of Dance Yrself Clean's "aaa" in Home. And about your liking for post-punk w/ disco influence: I have loved good old fashioned post-punk for a while, but starting to delve deeper into the disco side. What would you recommend most?
I think that you should do a Redux on this one, because i think that you have a lot of room to say more about this project since you placed 5 on your top albums of the decade list.
And because of your video im addicted to this album, thank you
I agree with your rating, i think the album is very adventurous, and if it is their last, it's one hell of a way to bow out. i think that the track All I Want can be a real hit, perhaps not to the level of All My Friends, but it can certainly be a hit for the summer. my only slight criticism is with You Wanted A Hit, i think the music on it is great, it just perhaps could bring the vocals in earlier. other than that, this is my favorite album of he year thus far.
I would agree with 9/10
- Dance Yrself Clean
3:26 - Drunk Girls
3:45 - One Touch
3:33 - All I Want
- I Can Change
- You Wanted a Hit
- Pow Pow
4:10 - Somebody's Calling Me
- Home
Completely agree. Every track is bumpin' (Somebody's calling me might be the exception, as you pointed out.) Every other track is bonifide. You Wanted A Hit and Pow Pow are just too good. Dance yourself clean as well. Overall great album and a great review! And while he may not make anymore albums under "LCD", i hope youre right about him still making music (a la Sufjan Stevens).
3:41 "a casserole of layered instrumentation" now this is the kind of descriptive imagery that sets this guys reviews one notch above the rest.
This album pretty much laid the foundation for most of my favorite music in the 2010's
Only discovered this album this year... seriously ahead of it's time

Watching this right after it got #5 spot on album of the decade list... crazy
Home is my favorite, and I definitely agree with you, the songs don't feel as long as they actually are especially with all the developing within them.
My step-grandpa was in a band with Dio WAY back in the day :)
i do really like this album too... it makes me just want to start dancing around my room when some of the songs really get going. my main issue is the song 'somebody's calling me' which i really don't care for... but i like all the other songs and love 'you wanted a hit'. great album
just saw them play at the Pitchfork Music Festival yesterday.. FUCKING EPIC! swear to balls my brain melted at each track they played. Gonna miss you James Murphy... well, im gonna miss the "LCD Soundsystem" James Murphy. lookin forward to whatever he does next.
Somebodys Calling Me is one of my favourites. It’s almost hypnotic with its strange synths and repetitive lyrics.
definitely interested in hearing this one, lcds early stuff along with other dfa produced things really re-ignited my interest in dance music earlier in the decade. i have to say im not really a fan of "drunk girls" but the other 1 or 2 i have heard from this so far sounds promising. definitely have to get this at some point.
2:10 - pufferfish carrot sound
Should've been a 10. I don't get how you can find this thing any less than that
I... agree
@@ganishka1350 the description says 9/10
Imagine if Sound of Silver/This Is Happening was a double album.
As someone who is obsessed with this album and have NEVER found someone else who likes LCD Soundsystem, reading these comments is exhilarating
great review man,i love the way you emphasize the winning sides of this album....this is happening hits home for me too since i really enjoyed their two previous projects(someone great is a masterpiece)and i go crazy for this genre...i do too think that all i want is similar to bowie's heroes but it has its own personality and originality...keep it up brò.
This album came out nine years ago. Jesus Christ.
I actually really liked sombody's calling me. It felt really different.
Classic days of Fantano :) great review!
I wasn't big on LCD Soundsystem's first record, but after listening to Sound of Silver I just went crazy for these guys. I was really excited about this record and let me just say this record is an amazing follow up to Sound of Silver. This for me is maybe a strong 8 or a light 9.
back b4 he was THICC
They are musical geniuses 🐆 I love this album.. I would give it 4.5 out 5 stars
dance-floor music these days is lacking in sentiment and real value. I think LCD Soundsystem is trying to preserve the idea that there can be some sentiment on the dance-floor. His debut was okay like a few songs on it but "Sound of Silver' is where I started liking him. and then this album came out. MAN this album is FAR better that the last two. such an awesome album, so much fun to listen to!
this album is amazing
I was about 4 years old when this video came out, so I'm just a tad bit late to the party. But I will say now that is quite the based rating you gave, Melon.
Hi
@@infirite72 yo
10/10
Nobody going to talk about Pow Pow? I think that takes the cake in this album
The best of songs on this record, although more polished than previous LCD Sounsystem, are just as good as anything James Murphy has ever made. Songs like Dance Yrself Clean, All I Want, Home, You Wanted A Hit, and even Drunk girls are an extreme accomplishment even for James Murphy. That being said, I also feel the same way about the weaker tracks on the album; they are on the same level with LCD's worst work to date. Somebody's Calling Me, Pow Pow, and One Touch just seem to drag. Solid 8 IMO.
Come on Pow Pow is classic
great pop album with happy music. danceable likable tunes. songs to tap your foot to whilsy stroking your chin. jhe will never write another "losing my edge" but who cares...... james murphy can do whatever he wants....admittedly, it took me a few spins to like this album, now i cant get enough of it. not a perfect album but its damn good!
