George Clooney was a carpenter at the age of 30. Most certainly, being a carpenter is a fine career, and you can actually make a great deal of money doing it. But fuck, to imagine that such a huge star was just kind of doing normal shit until he was 30!

I first saw this 8 years ago when I was living with my Mum, working a shitty job. I would watch this repeatedly for inspiration and it really had a huge impact on my life. 8 years later I've achieved success as a music video/commercial director, I came back thinking I now knew it all, but it's again inspired my in a completely new way. Big up James Murphy!

This guy is real. Change comes slowly and unexpectedly. One day it's done and you don't even know why. All this bullshit epiphany stories all these famous people tell , like "At that moment I knew something in me changed and I realised...". Yeah, bullshit. This is real life and it sucks sometimes. This ain't a movie. We all feel like we expected something different from life, every single one of us.
Well, as much as I agree with your sentiment, James did kinda mention his own realization moment in this interview at 2:48. Yes change is gradual, but I don't think all of those so-called 'epiphany stories' are necessarily bullshit. Sometimes a switch can suddenly go off in your head, and while that might not mean everything instantly changes, it can mark an unexpected beginning to a new part of your journey.
Change comes slowly and unexpectedly. But also fast and unexpectedly. And those moments of epiphanies exist and can make a real difference in life. We all expected something different from life, but sometimes you get an idea to do something with what you got. And if you haven't had one of those moments, I bet you will.

It took me years of therapy and stagnation to realize that I might as well just follow my dreams. There was an episode of House where the protagonist takes methadone (he has a Vicodin addiction) and starts shaving and cleaning and being a kinder, gentler person and stuff. It's kind of like that for me-- Maybe I'll never fulfill my dream of becoming a professional musician, but trying to get into a conservatory provides me with purpose and I'm overall just a better person for it.

Very cool. Very human. Admitting to envy, lethargy and all around sense of despair that stifles almost anyone at some point in their life. I just got a tremendous amount of hope from this interview.

I was lazy, but "lazy" never felt right when I heard that, when I say that to myself I'm sayin': 'I wasn't lazy, I was really afraid, I was really afraid of failing'.
All my life I've been precautious and y'know, 'I was supposed to be smart', 'I was supposed to be creative'...
Hearing those things makes you scared, that you're gonna do something stupid, or do something uninteresting, and no one will see you as 'smart' or 'creative' anymore.
I've never ever been given any credit for being hard-working or being, y'know...diligent. So all my credits were based in these attributes that I had no control of. So I kinda of just realized that I was being afraid of doing nothing or lookin' bad that I didn't do anything.
That I just did nothing. And that I can claim some sort of safety in doing Nothing."

More and more people these days are realizing they had this exact mindset growing up and all of them crashed as they got older, myself included. I'm just glad we're finding the words for it so we can address it head on.

Wow, he really described my entire life in the first minutes of this. I was already the youngest on everything until I was 16. The youngest in class, the youngest in bands, dance classes, study groups. And out of nowhere I just lost interest in everything. Here I am now, about to turn 24, nowhere near graduating college, no steady job, depending on my mother. I feel bad for all the potential I had but I feel paralyzed, scared to make a change. It's a relief to hear someone else went through this same shit and made through. I don't think I want to be as successful as James Murphy. I just want to be okay. Satisfied with my life.

I thought the same thing. He says this so nonchalantly I wanna know more about this phase of the process because that takes an insane amount of money and equipment.
Starting a label doesn't take an insane amount of money or equipment. About 15 years ago lots of distribution companies would pay for the manufacturing of the vinyl. So the start up costs were quite slow.

Wow as a 25 year old now, this speaks so much to me, not a musician like James but there are a lot of things I hold back from because a fear of failure not because I’m lazy like so many seem to think. It’s time for me to get my act together in a lot of ways and give myself a shot at happiness.

The ultimate late bloomer: LCD soundsystem is an absolute phenomenon. Great insight here....and he's right. We don't value hard work in our society (look at the minimum wage...basic work will leave your absolutely derelict). We value ego, projection...materialism. LCD is a beautiful respite from the grind of human shallowness.

i'm in my office alone at the moment, someone i knew from back home ended their life the other day and it's weirdly affecting me, more than i thought it would. I'm also coming to terms with an eating disorder and general self image issues, struggling to connect with the people around me because i fundamentally don't respect myself. I feel like the algorithm could see this and popped this to the top of my feed to help me out, which is an insane thought but a comforting one

So right on. But I was in my late 40s when I started writing fiction seriously, after decades of fear of failure and not trusting my instincts. And only now, at 55 does it seem possible this career is going to work out. I’m writing the weird stories I need to write and they’re connecting with people. And I’m suddenly hardworking and effective, as James discovered.

dropping out of college doesn't make you a failure. be good to people and have some self respect and you will never be a failure. even if you work a mcdonalds it doesn't matter just do the best you can.

Guess it depends on what your definition of success is. For James, I think it was a few measures more than being a good person (important as that might be to him), for others it might simply be living a good honest life like you're saying. That's the terrifying beauty of life- it's up to you how you want to define your life and your goals. Never listen to the artificial expectations other people and society thrust upon us. Unless you have kids lol. Then you've gotta provide. Otherwise, it's all up to interpretation
He's saying that decision wasn't true to himself, not that a college dropout is a failure. Years later he would make good on that decision, but at the time he realized he was just dropping out as an escape and an excuse to avoid responsibility for himself.

I watched his newer interview and he kind of goes into more depth with this experience, and it made all of this make more sense. He talks about how failing allowed him to succeed, and allowed him to no longer be afraid of it. Basically, allow yourself to fail, make music even though you know you will probably fail, then take what you learned from it and you'll make yourself better. Go into your situation knowing that failure is an option, and allowing yourself to be okay with that option, because failure means you gave it a shot, and giving it a shot is better than sitting around and doing nothing. Failure can still give you a gain. You make something that nobody is interested in, well now you know nobody is interested in that, and you learned skills along the way. Failure paves the way to success, so just go fail already, and appreciate the fact that you gave yourself the opportunity to fail!

When I was young, all I wanted to do was drink beer and get laid, unfortunately you need money for even that, so I got a job. I remember driving around in my 72 Torino drinking beer with my buddies wishing we had girls. Now I drive around with my wife wishing I had beer. And the kids only call when they need money. Its kind of cool.

I am 26 years old right now and needed to see this. I have been dealing with a mental block of not doing the things I need to do for the last few years. I have been afraid of failure, afraid of looking bad, and afraid of not looking smart. I know what I have to do. I will just make it. Stop overthinking and worrying. Just make it. I don't know if I'll succeed but try, fail, learn, try again, iterate

Dude went to NYU for lit. He was actually offered a job to write for Seinfeld but turned it down. Real smart guy, but as he mentions, you can't get proud of yourself for having attributes you can't control.
Interesting. I listened to LCD when I was a sophomore a few years ago, just got back into them. I love that he is so honest in his interviews. He's not afraid of trailing off and seeming normal, saying something that might be seen as boring. I see Wallace's interviews the same way. My favorite part of "Shut Up and Play the Hits," was Murphy talking about David Bowie, and how Bowie and other rockstars are kind of like legends, rock gods. Murphy seemed to try to demolish that image; I can't picture Bowie shaving in the morning or crying after his last show.
@@bradyedge3627 Interesting. Seeing the real person behind the 'idol' is important to realise that these people are human. This video proves that. Also on the topic of David Foster Wallace: reading 'Although of course you end up becoming yourself' by David Lipsky was eyeopening for me-it showed how painfully self-conscious DFW was and how his writing came out of periods of despair. Even after the relase of Infinite Jest he felt subpar. There's a letter he wrote to Don Delillo (his literary idol) asking him for advice.
It gives us all hope to see this sort of reality behind immense works like Infinite Jest or LCD Soundsystem's great albums. They're products of flawed humans.

I live in the south of Brazil! Porto Alegre! Almost at the end of the world! And I remember the first time I listened to Losing My Edge, 2001, on a obscure website with new electronic and strange and psychedelic music bands that I can't even remember the name of the site anymore and if I could download the MP3 in 128. All I know is that when I heard LCD I freaked out and downloaded it on same hour. I think I spent a year listening straight into my headphones until the cd finally came out! Years later, LCD came to play here in the city at a steakhouse! I don't know if they'll remember! I just know that I really miss new music! There are a lot of good things going around, but the LCD is definitely missing! Cheer's from Porto Alegre. South Brazil!

this video is so important to me, I will always come back to it. Just lifts you up and makes you laugh. It's comforting to hear these words and that it's never do late to do something great.
James Murphy is the man.
But what he's saying here is that he wasn't always the man. What he's talking about is perfectionism. Being scared to do something not perfect. "Really afraid of failing". Building the challenges you see off in the future into a bigger and bigger mountain until you're too scared to approach it, to even try to climb it.
I never knew this was me until recently. So, guess I'm writing this to clue others in, if you're in the same place. Don't get down, stay up.
I've listened/watch this a bunch lately. Great dialogue with himself. My take away: Once a person drops the prejudices and starts engaging the world on their level the person can start to discover their place in the world and start to doing very big things.

I am 26 and I relate a lot except I am a filmmaker and not a musician. I have had several moments when I would look up what age Spielberg or Lucas were when they made their first features and it depresses me that I still feel far from that. It is encouraging to hear he was able to overcome and make it work.
I'm currently studying the career of my dreams. Translation and Interpreting. The problem is that I don't know how to study. My techniques are poor and not successful. And if i fail one subject one more time, my college will kick me out. Another problem is that I have depression. So even if I study for a test and I get a 5 out of 10, I feel so down. So down. Like the world is above my shoulders. Another thing that I realized is that my mind works so slowly. I learn really slow, and all the other students catch up really quick. I don't know why. When my friend successfully passes an exam, instead of motivating me to study more, I get sad. In that sense, my mind works backward. I don't know why. I just hope not to drop out of college.
I'm sure this story is the same for loads of musicians and creatives. I gave up trying to make music happen in my early 20s when my band broke up then last year just thought fuck it and started a solo project and started putting stuff out. There's no rush, just keep moving forward

I always enjoy down to earth stories of how someone's life went from going nowhere to actually getting somewhere. It's just a shame that I'm a 35 year old drunk earning £20k a year who's never had a promotion and has no ambition left.

Weird synchronicity at work. Have just discovered both David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest and LCD SS within a month of each other. Murphy is very engaging indeed in conversation, just like he is with his music, as I've begun to discover.
Losing My Edge is one of the best songs of all time.
26!? I'm 46. I've done everything and nothing. College, bands, chicks, ocean life guard, army medic, combat veteran, cop, plebotomist, food and beverage manager at a Hilton, author, homeless, and biochar engineer. You did what I never did, that makes me feel like I did nothing!

Turned 26 last week, wanted to check in. In the last year my life improved 10 fold. I got a new job, and then a promotion within 9 months. I work at a company I love, I have made new friends that will remain my friends until I die. Life can change, and life will change - give it time.
