Tutorial: How I make my own Contrast Paint

  • Contrast Paint has a lot of great applications, and it seems like magic. Its core properties are pretty simple to duplicate, though. Spending almost $8 per pot is rough, especially if it's a color you're not going to use much. I still buy and use Contrast for some applications, but this method offers a nice alternative.

    Using Glaze Medium instead of Matt Medium makes way more sense. I am going to try this next!

    Been enjoying the videos. I've been doing something like this with matte medium so I'm going to try this next time. I have a small silicon tipped clay shaper tool to mix my stuff, that way I never have to clean a brush or lose material.

    If you are unable to find ProAcryl in your area, Scale75 paints are also highly pigmented (they also have a great line of inks that lend themselves better to wargaming opposed to just the primaries that you tend to find with Liquitex inks)

      I haven't, but it's probably worth trying at some point. Usually I just mix to purpose for a given project.

  • @FelipeBudinich
    @FelipeBudinich 6 месяцев назад

    I use Dispel Magic medium from Scale 75, that reduces the amount of mixing I need to do a lot to achieve "contrast-like" results.
    (But I still like some specific Citadel Contrast paints for convenience)

    The flesh tone making trouble makes a lot of sense, flesh paints have a lot of titanium white pigment in them (they're really a slightly orange-tinted offwhite), which is very opaque and really fights against the "contrast" effect.

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  2 года назад

      Excellent point. I probably should have clarified that. The proper Contrast flesh tones are actually pretty decent, so I often just thin them a bit to get more control.

    Could you please make a list of paints that you used and where you could find them? (Eg hardware stores, Wal-Mart, etc). I plan on starting a custom Necron army using OnePageRules minis

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  2 года назад

      That would be a LONG list. I probably have well over 100 paints at this point. As for where to get them, I've tried craft paint from hardware or big box stores and have been underwhelmed by them. Dedicated miniature or artist acrylics just tend to be higher quality. For Necrons specifically, though, there is a long tradition of spraying them with black primer (which you can absolutely buy from a normal store), then spraying from above with silver. It's a basic, but often effective look.
      Since you mentioned it. How do you find the OPR 40k analog?

    Sorry for being late to the party, but i do hope that you can help me out on this one. I'm from Brazil, and i want to start the hobby on my next vacation from work. I'm not well versed at all with all this stuff, and i just want to do some slapchop things, as it seems to be beginner friendly and make my own contrast since they're hella expensive over here.
    So, my question is, if i have both matte medium and flow-aid, can i use a normal acrylic PAINT instead of a INK like you did here to attain good enough results?

    Hey gotta say this is exactly the kind of video i was looking for, I have a big project for a Tomb Kings army planned for this year. I'm planning on using this to whip up some contrast for the bulk of the units, is there any chance i could get a ratio guide for using inks ? Would it be something like 1/3 (Ink/Medium)?

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  2 года назад

      Glad to help! Unfortunately, there's no universal rule, as the strength of pigments can vary, but its usually at least 4 or 5 to 1 additive to ink. For skeletons, I'd try maybe Sepia.

    • @jamieredmond8864
      @jamieredmond8864 2 года назад

      @@MTFTabletop Awesome, i didnt expect there to be an exact ratio, but that give me a good starting point. I'm going with Liquitex's Sepia yea, cant imaging how many bottles of contast i would need to paint a full tomb kings army (or two).

      @@MTFTabletop I have tried DIY washes from other YT videos. This one is by far the best. Have a tip on making acrylic washes? I use oil for most stuff, just hoping you have one for acrylics. Same recipe just add more flow improver?

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  2 года назад +1

      @@tx_marauder If you're just wanting a recess wash, then yeah, flow improver or something else to lower surface tension. I've been meaning to try mixing up some medium with a tiny bit of dish soap like we did back in the late 90s, but haven't gotten around to it.

    How's Pro Acrylic compare to Scale 75?

    • @MTFTabletop
      @MTFTabletop  2 года назад +1

      It's at least as pigmented and matte as Scale 75. It's more fluid, so I find getting it airbrush-ready a lot easier. Also, it's significantly cheaper per mL. Scale 75 is great, but most of my recent purchases have been Pro Acryl.
