    I'm glad you mentioned the realised cliché moment. It happens to me quite often, shower thought moments where I'm trying to sum up some sort of realised truth, only to suddenly think "damn". It's been said before but never really understood. Those moments are still great/inspirational.
    Great video! Subbed.

    Sometimes having slight elements of cliche adds familiarity to the poetry. Which can make people like it more. Great video!

    Good point at 13:44. One thing they always tell me at school is that, if something doesn't fit or *can* be improved, then we should remove it and improve it. They also tell us that similes and metaphors are important because they appear in more than just literature; it appears in music, etc. I primarily focus on using metaphors, because that is thought to be the best way to gain marks in assessments to do with persuading. Thanks for sharing, I've certainly learned today. :-)

    • @poesho
      @poesho  8 лет назад +2

      +Oliver Garcia That's interesting, Oliver. Why do you think your teacher awards metaphors more in assessments? In real life, when there is no one to grade our work for us, do you think metaphors still serve an important purpose in helping us think?

    • @bellamybug
      @bellamybug 8 лет назад +1

      Poetry Show Great question. It made me think. Metaphors make me think because my theme of writing tends to be quite literal - unfortunately for me, because our next topic will be focusing on *non*-literal writing! I always assumed that poets always scrutinize their works through and through, or assessed their piece with other people. The whole purpose of metaphors is that it makes you think - it's not easy to come up with one, which I learned the hard way. In general, I presumed the teacher awarded more marks because metaphors incline to entice more people - and poetry geeks - into reading, etc.

    However, cliché has a lot of power too in the fact that it is an established idea because the fact that it has been used and thought before bring people to a familar setting. It has been said that "everything has been said, but since nobody was listening, it has to be said again." Now I'm not saying to always use cliches, but never ever ever using one is called being a hipster. (Okay so I'm joking on that one...) I mean really, if a cliche takes a spot in a poem where you would say something yourself, I don't believe that any idea is 100% original. Someone out there has to have thought of your idea in some form... So really not using clichés is really you taking established ideas and trying to say them in another way that is basically the same just slightly different.

    • @poesho
      @poesho  7 лет назад +5

      CommonCore Autismos I prefer poetry that challenges established ideas. Sure, cliche has a place in poetry, but many beginning poets misuse cliche, or don't realise they are using one. I wouldn't say never use cliches, but I would be very careful about using them unless I was convinced it was the best way to communicate my ideas.

    I happen to think sausage of happiness is awesome, and you smiled when you said it, so you know you like it, lol.
    It's not a good idea for personal poetry, sounds like a good way to get ideas for a comedy movie though.

    The notion that we should scrap random association as a means of metaphor discovery is nonsense. I have never tried it but will now, since this is a technique that engages the mind instead of sensoring it, and poets I know who do use it, do so with impressive results.
