Can anyone be a better poet? Why is poetry so hard?!

In response to a comment on my video for the Golden Rule of becoming a better poet, one user, let's call 'em Jo(e), asked the age old question: "Why is writing poetry so F#*$@@#*& difficult?!"
The truth is that beginning poetry is as easy as picking up a pen, but to improve takes practice. Wearing the right gear doesn't make you a marathoner, training does. The same is true of poetry. So watch the rest of my videos for inspiration, and start practicing. If it takes you years to become the poet YOU want to be, best start now. You'll find it doesn;t actually take that long for you to really see improvements! And you'll know for yourself when that is starting to come true.
    Thanks for the comments, 'Jo(e)'.

Supposedly, Michelangelo wrote the inscription “Ancora Imparo” (I am still learning) into one of his sketches. He was 87.

I've actually been writing poetry since I was 13 and I'm 25 now. I've only written when inspired. But I've read quite a bit of poetry however I still have gotten where I wanna be in my writing. A fellow poet who's been published told me to pick a couple poems for the masters and try to imitate them, and after seeing this video, that confirms they were right with there advice. That poet is a teacher as well.

I love when teachers learn from students and can admit that they’re imperfect.

Some people are born talented musicians. Others have to practice hard to become talented.
    It's the same with poetry.

I appreciate your perspective on this topic. I write poetry since I was a teenager. However, I felt discouraged by and ex bf who said that my work wasn't brilliant. Now, I'm 34 and trying to come back to my poetry and improve it! My goal is to have a serious hobby for the first time in my life 😊💜

Dude wtf , I hate it when teachers say you can't do something... WTF they are there to help you to achieve and not to put you down... at least in theory... it seems schools, and the like, are there to deter you from learning.

Seems fair enough ,but in a way think this might be better served or really is a chat about defining "Prose" and "poetry" So glad I never did my typical "over learn" style when I first started rambling on paper or prose and stayed with the thoughts of finding my own emotions, feelings to express events in my own life as they were happening. then just laying them out in an orderly fashion, kind of a beginning, middle and end.
Thanks this is actually the first time I have ever heard someone talk about it,because I am exploring the idea of reading & recording my own poems as another way of presenting them. Thx,look forward to hearing more of what you have to say. "PEACE TAKES PRACTICE" Rick

I can only write poetry when compelled. It doesn't happen all the time, so, I don't have many poems.

Poetry is one of the hardest things to learn, and the reason is most people don't even know what a good poem looks like. The biggest challenge is not even technical skill, but depth. Most poetry is not going to have any real content, or do anything interesting (beyond gimmicks). Unfortunately some of the best poets I have come across don't get published, or are not part of the 'academy'. Becoming a well known poet is more about connections than skill. Everyone's heard of Rupi Kaur, even though she is utterly terrible, yet few people have heard of James Emmanuel, even though he was one of the best poets of recent decades.
Also, I would recommend this: ruclips.net/video/DxZldI6CYKE/видео.html

Your videos are all incredible, both in usefulness and originality. I've been using many of the tips you offer and they have been really beneficial to my writing and inspirational to me trying new things. I love what you've started here, and am really looking forward to when the series continues (when you have time for it of course - no pressure!). Again, love the channel, and as you said it takes a few tries and practices to get something amazing happening! Good luck with life, and thanks for the advice!

English language is not an ideal medium for poetry. Unlike some other languages, the words are rigid and don't change depending on the context. It's like building with a limited set of lego pieces. Changing sentence structure - immediately like Yoda would say something sound it makes...
To make matters worse, if you write poetry that rhymes, it is considered old style, childish, not modern.
So without rhyme and with limited flexibility, modern poetry in English IS hard, and is sometimes ridiculous.
20th century poetry got infected with Cubism, and it stuck around as a valid form of expression, which provides an easy escape from Shakespearean sound.
As a result, there's been a conscious sacrifice of meaning for modernity. Impressionism has been accepted as the norm for poetic expression, pushed to the edge of sanity on a dare for anyone to call the bluff.
I think the most important thing to do to help the situation is find a way to destroy the stigma associated with rhyme.
