This full transcription, complete with the talk-through process of the entire behind-the-scenes series, took just under 12.5 hours to complete. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Fun Fact: The final chord Carolina Crown plays that this transcription morphs into is actually more in tune than the computerized version of that same chord in the transcription. If you listen closely to the audio cross-fade, you might be able to hear it.
That's because we use just intonation. :)
I also just found out you're the transcriber and probably already knew that... hahaha
The morph from the MIDI to live on the final chord literally gave me chills!
I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Yo dude that was awesome, great work putting it all together with the behind the scenes footage too. Especially loved the creep snippet at m. 201 in the ballad, that caught my ear EVERY time during the summer. Not sure if that was planned or a coincidence, but either way props to a balls-out brass staff and music team.
You can say that again about the staff! Wait until you see what they have planned for this year! I'm glad you enjoyed the series - it means a lot to me. Thanks for watching!
One of our trumpet players marched Bluecoats in 2011 and the first time we played this ballad he looks at me and goes, "I think that's the same chord progression as Creep." haha
Holy crap that is creep!! That's amazing!!
Ben Gunnarson that’s definitely space oddity
Probably the hardest score ever in DCI history
Tried to play the bari book failed miserably
@@benjitrombone4701 same
Dude (or not a dude, whichever) what a great job! Only someone like myself who marched this show would be able to point out any flaws and even then you'd never know it! Color me impressed! Thanks for taking the time to put this together. The fades into and out of Finale/midi are superb!
I was trying to play along with this for like 20 minutes and it sounded so weird, but then I realized that the trumpet notes are all concert pitch.
I was doing the same I was like wtf!!
Jaden Byars me too😂
Omg
I was so confused
i figured out that it was concert pitch when mellos played an A but it sounded like an E. Concert F and E are really easy notes for me to remember what they sounds like
Thank you guys SO much for the 75k views! What an incredible milestone - your support means a lot to me!
I'd listen to the beginning over and over again if I could! THE VOCALS IS AMAZING!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW
8:51 onward = so many chills, I'll never forget seeing this live. Should have won, in my books, if only it weren't for Feliniesque being so clean and inhumanly perfect
The competition that year was f*cking insane. Tilt, felliniesque schehezarade, at least those I can name right now, were amazing shows. Don’t forget that 99.65 💀
I wanna learn to play this so bad! 😫😍
Practice
OH MY GOSH THIS IS AMAZING YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're too kind, Justine :) I hope you're doing well!
You earned yourself a like and a sub. Great job.
Thanks! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
This is AWESOME!!!!
I wish that there was percussion though!! Definitely the best show this summer
Jesus Christ, this is good.... I love your transcriptions of the hardest marching brass literature out there. Keep them up!
Absolutely awesome! Carolina Crown is my favorite corps and you did a great job with the transcription of the original. I also very much enjoyed E=mc2. Keep up the great work!
There are great RUclips videos and great transcriptions. This is both.
DAMN. Perfect!!!! At measure 298 the trill is insanely on point, which never happens with transcriptions!
That ending always gets me...
The part starting at 8:57 always makes my jaw drop whenever I listen to it! It's so insane that they pulled it off that cleanly!
BEtrumpet They've without a doubt got some of the strongest, most fortified, greatest depth of solid fundamentals of any group out there, marching arts or not, professional or not. They're one of a kind! Thanks for watching :)
FreakoftheArts73 Yes they definitely do! Thanks for replying to my comment! Your videos have inspired me to do some transcribing on my own :) I am currently working on the Cadets' 2013 show which is turning out to be quite difficult haha. It's very atonal in lots of parts. Yay Samuel Barber :P
Very well done!!!! I love this. I used to do stuff like this when I had time many years ago. Glad someone out there is having fun and and sharing it with the rest of us music geeks.
BlackValuesVoter Thanks for the great compliment! I know what you mean - I'm starting to run out of time, too, so I'm glad that there are others out there continuing to share theirs with the rest of us as well. Thanks for watching!
Amazing job man! REALLY, WELL DONE! Hats off to you sir!
Thanks for the kind words - it means a lot!
What a fantastic job! Wow bravo!
Amazing Job! This was a fantastic show and you did it justice! FANTASTIC!
A truly inspiring show, wasn't it? Definitely altered my expectations of what a drum corps could do! I'm glad that you enjoyed the transcription - thanks for watching!
FreakoftheArts73 It was my pleasure to watch! Crown definitely pushed some hornline boundaries. BD may have had an awesome feature, but this whole damn show was a feature and must've been so fun to play.
This is so awesome!
I'm glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Wow, that's insane great job and its really accurate
I'm glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Dude! Awesome!!!!! I played the mello 2 part of the ballad at MFA Summer Symposium last summer, and this is nearly spot on! 7 thumbs up! #spacepantsband
Props to you on this fantastic transcription! You're awesome!
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
I am going to try to learn the mello part. Wish me luck...
Did you ever learn it?
so how did that go?
The horn part is written in C instead of F
Correct - in this particular video, everything is marked in concert pitch. Thanks for watching!
Loved your editing.
I appreciate the kind words!
INCREDIBLE! You should be super proud of yourself! And the ending was awesome! Nice edit! Please never stop! :))))))) subbed!!
I'm humbled and glad that you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
Wonderfully done!
Devin simmons I'm glad that you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
10:16 that transition tho 😍
Why is the whole mello part placed in b flat, it’s labeled f but it’s in b flat. Just thought I’d point that out,
Nicely done bro
What an amazing ending
Jayy MilL What's even more amazing is that a cross-fading from the MIDI to the live audio the way that I did would've immediately exposed all the imperfections in intonation and quality of their last chord, and - after marching and playing possibly the most demanding exhausting drum corps show to date on the last day of the season - they still appeared to have no imperfections in intonation, quality of sound, or intensity. I'll figure out how they do it some day... Thanks for watching!!
PSA: This is is C lol
Dang your timing is on point great vid
I appreciate the compliment! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
That was awesome! Could you post one with everyone not playing in the key of C, I would love to play along with this but I cant really transpose.
Just in case people are following along on the trumpet part and asking why it sounds funny. This is written in C so you'll have to transpose the parts to Bb!
This is correct - all parts notated here are displayed in concert pitch so that less experienced score-readers can actually see how the parts interact with each other harmonically without having to figure out transposition. Thanks for pointing it out!
@@FreakoftheArts73 i know this is a very late request but can you make or send me a pdf or download link?
Do 2016 😳
can someone plase tell me what the music at 4:47 is from?
Is it just me or is it when the score for the mellows is written on the bottom half of the staff, the pitches are off 1:07, when I play what is written in real life, the written A is actually a higher E on the horn and the written C is actually a G? or am I crazy

Hardest Brass book in the history of DCI
You guys may be interested to know that I will be putting up a live stream while I transcribe a section of Crown's 2015 show starting around 2pm EST today (in 1 hour). We can discuss what an incredible year it's been while you watch me write. Come stop by and hang out if you wish! Find the link on my Facebook page a 2pm: facebook.com/MSGrantMusic
any chance of getting just the 1st baritone part to practice along with at home? PDF? awesome job!
what is the name of 8:04 again? it's on the tip of my tongue but i cant quite place it
Jupiter from The Planets by Holst
Sooooooooo Bluecoats next?
WHOEVER CAN PLAY 8:56 IS A GOD
Nythlen I can and I'm a beginner in 6th grade
ok
Mike Gallegos nobody cares
Red Clasher that's not very nice man
I can and I'm an unborn fetus
Know what would make this better? If you can get the original ending where the runs were not watered down.
I don't know that "watered down" is the taxonomy I would use to describe how they edited the music, but I agree that the original ending was quite a sight and sound to witness! The original runs (both the 16th note runs and the succeeding 8th note runs) are actually all in step-wise/scale-wise motion starting on concert Bb in the lead trumpets and are actually pretty easy to dictate on your own if you want to give it a try! Thanks for watching!
8:57 baritones going insane
Hey Marcus, I have a question. How did you edit the midi so that it sounded like the horn line was facing backfield? Thanks!
Taylor Fox Hi, Taylor! I used audacity for this, just as I did for the live/MIDI fade-outs and the antiphonal effects in the trumpet feature. You can find insight in that in this bonus BTS episode. Thanks for your continued support! ruclips.net/video/yWR8k0x36Ac/видео.html
Can you transcribe Genesis 2014 The Art of Darkness show?
can someone transcribe the snare drop for me?
Does anyone know the source material for the counterpoint section at 4:46? Absolove it and it sounds so familiar, but can't seem to find what it is.
Did you do the 2013 show?!?
Great work!!!
I sure did! Thanks for watching!
can someone send me the music? I'm trying to add the battery parts to it.
Is there a Midi version of this available for download?
why is this in concert pitch?
Cool, but the vitae aeturnum trumpet parts need work. Definitely not the top note for the double tonguing
It’s in c bud
why did you concert pitch the trumpets?
Can we get a download link or something ;(
What was the piano part that started playing at 8:03? Song title, I'm positive I've heard this before
The front ensemble cues there (the piano part) represent a quote from the lyrical section Gustav Holst's "Jupiter", which was part of his compositional Suite entitled "The Planets". That piece - along with "Mars" - are by far the 2 most popular selections from his Suite and are used everywhere. Thanks for watching the video!
8:56
Trumpet parts in C....
Yes, everything in this particular video is in concert pitch. Thanks for watching!!
you did great but everything was a whole step below than it should be but still great job
When this video was created, the parts were displayed in concert pitch, making the trumpet parts appear a whole step off from if one were to play the selections themselves on a standard Bb Trumpet. However, the pitches sounding are still consistent to what you would play if you had access to the original score. That may be what you noticed. Thanks for watching!
At 8:04 it's Jupiter 😍😍
the lyrical part
And I'm pretty sure the trumpet feature is from Jupiter
like sorta for the first half but you seemed to fix it
Sounds Great man! Check my version of the opener! I 'm curious what you think of it!
***** It's funny, because I literally just posted about it. Love the version! Writing the brass out was involved enough of a process in itself, so I've never considered taking the time to write out the percussion or find anyone who would. It's a refreshing change of pace!
I wonder how long it took for them to get that lick from 8:57 - 9:07 down!
jaman198 What's crazy is that it probably took them less than a day after they got the edit mid-season to bring it up to par with the rest of the show. To get a run like that one as clean as they did, having strong fundamentals - both playing fundamentals for the students and teaching fundamentals for the staff - is what does the job. As we all know, CrownBRASS already has both :) I'm sure it was just more of the same for them. Thanks so much for watching!
Would this actually be possible to play on brass, it's pretty fast...
BEgan Hey, there! this is actually a transcription based off an authentic musical ensemble that tours the country every summer. I would not believe it were possible prior to hearing and seeing them perform it either - Carolina Crown has recently become known for setting new standards for musical achievement. Search the group's recordings and videos on RUclips and find out for yourself! Thanks for watching!
FreakoftheArts73 Ok, they must be the best of the best then, when I was composing a piece for class music it was a similar style and my teacher said that I must hate trumpets and that the pace would be almost impossible, probably also because we're only high school level. I also know very little about brass as I specialise in woodwind.
barely cus its probably the hardest brass book ever
What song is 4:47 based of off?
I must confess that I do not know - or at least if I did, my memory escapes me. I hope someone else can chime in, but I appreciate you watching the video!
This is some gen. 3 pokemon shit tbh
Ugh common, can anybody get the right partials for Mello
Crown does some ridiculous, unpredictable, and unprecedented things with their mello section every year, so I wouldn't be surprised if no one ever got the mello parts right without having actually performed the part themselves. They truly are superhuman. Thanks for watching!
measure 160-165 my brain just exploded
DJ GINGER aka 5:15 to 5:22
I know you're only transcribing what they play, but I really really hate those unnecessary mellophone runs in "Space Oddity". I hate them. They're useless, they don't do anything to enhance the music, and they ruin the mood.
Stop with these subject titles. Show sucks
Not sure what you're referring to here, but Crown's 2014 show is entitled "Out Of This World", so that's why the video is titled as such.
