No more purple permatex? Has been working great for me since you turned me on to it. Hope you are having a good holiday with the family!
Do Tesla's have brakes that need to be replaced ?
@@winch1587 he found a better consistency grease
There's something relaxing about watching Eric do a brake job. I think it has to do with me not doing the work.
That's a fine way to relax, M.H. There's nothing like doing nothing yourself to let yourself relax.
Every time he does brakes - in my mind - I am doing mine! 🥳
Yes. Work fascinates me. I can watch somebody else do it for hours...
I just did a brake job on my sister 08 altima. I live a few hours north of Eric O in the lovely rust belt. The drivers side caliper bracket bolts took the threads out with them on removal and I wasn't even using air tools...of course no parts stores sell just the bracket so guess who got replace the whole caliper :) So I can 100% agree on how relaxing it is watching someone else do the work lol.
@@harryl7946 Brake Job ASMR?
Put a new Tom Woods front driveshaft in my Jeep today to match the woody I have in my rear. Grabbed my can of brake cleaner automatically held it out in front of me and made my best attempt at the brake cleaner sound effect! My husband looked over at me and then smiled and said “ okay Mr. O” 🤣😂
My friend came over today to have me put rear brakes on a truck he just bought. The disc variety. Cruised through like I was a pro, thanks to the 5 years of expert schooling I received from the master himself. Your knowledge and generosity spreads far and wide. Thank you Sir.
Your channel is a bit of a therapy : just checking in for a piece of confort, with uncle Eric whispering bedtime stor... explaining how the work's done while Mrs O. takes care of the business, the kids and sometimes the cars.
Heart beat slowing down, finally at peace, everything's good.
The Brake Clean sound effect is hilarious.
I have never seen brake clean affect rubber in over 25 years of being a mechanic. I love your sense of humor and how you repair your customers 👍
Spray some on a rubber o ring then try and fit it back where it goes.
Wouldnt hurt to hit the rubber with some silicone spray or grease to rejuvenate the rubbers, gotta keep your rubbers juvenated🤣. Brake clean evaporates quick enough to not hurt the rubber. Dont use wd40 unless its silicone based
I watch Eric to remind myself that good, detailed work is itself it's own reward.
And just saying, Eric is right: If he can do it, you can too!
I like his saying, which I use all the time "Guttentight". I don't have a torque wrench, but I work on pre '90's cars.
My buddy has a shop, and I used to hang out there a lot after work till I started talking care of my sick mother. One of the biggest problems that I've seen with customers, is that they decide to bring their vehicles in with gas gage sitting on (E), knowing that my buddy or the other tech were going to have test drive it before working on it and test drive it afterwards. Then they wonder why there is an extra charge on their bill for gas.
I think some folks always drive around on "E". They must always drive around on fumes.
Customers do it to stop joy riding?
It's a weirded world it seems.
7:44 that's well above the melting point of most steels. 12:00 I can't speak for automotive engineers but for aircraft we have design manuals and test data for all of that torque information based on exactly all of the variables you list and it's all based on experimental test data. Everything from what we call the material stackup (the materials of the various parts), to the diameters, to the material of the fastener. It includes temperature data (metal becomes brittle or pliable at various temperatures), lubrication of the fasteners. We have separate manuals for bolts and nuts. Any time you change a fastener in the design you have to take all of this into account to ensure you aren't compromising the strength or fatigue life of it.
From an aircraft mechanic if torque is not listed we use a Standard Torque table, thread pitch, bold diameter, and if it is a shear load or tension load to determine torque setting with dry treads. Great video on a rainy day with a shot of brandy.
My torq specs are snug and tight. Works every time
Yep, torque tables do come in handy for max recommended torque. It’s usually pretty close to factory specs
Not just the food that can make you sleepy, watching and listening to Eric O will do that to ya..most relaxing dude.
Childhood home alert @ 15:50. Thanks for the ride up Maple Ave.
So… instead of NAPA sponsoring South Main Auto… South Main Auto is sponsoring NAPA! Love it!
I am glad you showed us both ways before moving from the stop signs...
Yes! The absolutely best way to do a brake job.. If you have to hammer the pads into the clips, something's wrong..! Take your time..Clean And Lube everything
There are a few other "expert" channels that show them grinding the pad ears to fit !!!
That german lesson is priceless
*Thanks for the Education & sharing part of your day! I love your Hat!*
*Privacy, Freedom, & Liberty for the People!*
That town is very lucky to have you there!
Along with loving the whole video, the wipers operating to the beat of the music during your post-repair test drive was just fantastic!
Eric: We are now officially Napa auto care center
also Eric: I'm sure these new Napa pads are the same crap as the old ones
NAPA: "Need another part again".
I buy from NAPA but not their brake pads. Centric and NAPA are essentially the same line and I don’t care for either. WorldPac sells OE for less than NAPA branded products.
Also Eric: still not a sponsor
I've noticed alot of auto shops use white box brake parts. The pads are simply referred to as "pad material" on the invoice.
And you said we don't come here for the brake jobs, I think most of us say "Yes we do". I love me a good Mr. O brake job.
Great to see a new SMA video on a Saturday morning. Great start to my day.
Better than turkey! SMA, the last remaining piece of pecan pie and brake cleaner! Life is definitely good. Thanks Mr. O.
Don’t know if it is a camera trick but I like the way you always have the right tool within reach. Me, I am all over the garage looking for the right tool I need. Love your videos.
i think he's just organized and has all the tools in drawers or on a shelf, but then again, he edits so there is that. :-)
Not my first rodeo 😉
A cart on wheels
@@jgriff3218 Yep, there is that too. Often it's obvious he has a cart as he often has the camera on it too, and when he slams a tool down on it, you can see the camera shake too. Plus, he can roll it around to where he needs it. Many mechanics will use this trick as well.
@@SouthMainAuto 2nd?! LoL 🤣😆
I'd have to say a brake job at this business will get you double the life out of a brake job at most garages. This is the correct way to service brakes folks.
That was an awesome refresh course. Great job Sir, it's make sense of cars sitting at the driveway longer. Great video take care thanks 😊
I grew up on the western tip of Virginia we had lots of snow and lots of salt on the road believe it or not I've been working on car since I was about 12 years old I grew up in coal country coal camp I changed oil done brake jobs replace starters you name it on all the people's cars around they sounded the roads really heavy and we had some really bad snows I remember one year when there was no school for 6 weeks straight but never in my life have I ever seen the undercarriage of a car rust like you show on your program it makes me cringe thanks for the video keep up the good work
For as many times as I've seen the drive around town, I can almost drive through this town and know exactly my way around
Always learn something from your videos! Wishing you and Mrs. O the best in your business.
The handheld belt sanders with the 1/2" wide belts are *awesome* for cleaning difficult to get to spots on a caliper or any other oddly shaped item.
Hey Eric O, the backround music was exactly in time with the windshield wipers on delay during your time lapse test drive! I enjoy your videos immensely. I have learned so much about repairing cars from you. Keep up the good work. Guy Franks
After eating one of Mrs. O's lunches, I'd be ready for a good nap. It must be hard having to go back out in the shop!
Imagine if anyone else ever took the care you did on things like brakes that are so important. Keep up the fastidious and informative work.
Brake bracket is ductile iron that melts at 2100F. Bolt is steel that melts at 2760F. The grease wins! Thorium with a melting point of 3180F wins over the grease.
Interesting!
Eric used Thor for assembly so the bolts are already Thoriumed.

@@paulparoma I remember when they tried to change gas from gallons to Liters... Americans like me told them to shove it.
I do most of the work on my 3 vehicles, but when there's a tough one I can't figure out I take it to a pro. I wish Eric O was close to me(I'm around 280 miles from him on Long Island NY)I feel like moving to Avoca just to have a great mechnic nearby. Great channel Mr O............................
How well organized your workshop has, excellent friend
Always a good video, Eric!!! Thanks for sharing.
I was always a person of Advance brakes but recently after watching every last one of your brake job videos made the leap and got a set of Napa Adaptive one brakes and the best premium coated rotors for my 12 Impala to put up against Rochester winters. Really excellent brakes might I add, very satisfied with the stopping power.
I never get tired of watching your videos. Thanks for the organic sheep sound effect, it made my day! Nice hat by the way. God bless 'merica!
Love me some brake job videos. They never get old. They only get better. Thank you as always sir!
Good video. Love your silent torque wrench.
Morning Eric hope you and yours had a wonderful thanksgiving.
This is probably the 4000th break job I watched Erik do and it's just as relaxing as the other ones ...I don't know why
Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a real down to earth way . I’m teaching my daughter and her boyfriend through your videos. We just installed the wheel bearing assembly without breaking the sensor tab 👍 thanks again . The scampi looked delicious!
I was gonna say the same thing @M H.. its eerily soothing to watch Eric O replace brake pads and rotors
Got up this morning and saw a new video from Eric O so I new I would have a good evening. Thanks Eric.
You are correct about sitting and rusted brakes
You are an entertainer Eric! Great effort, love the way Thor makes it effortless to remove whatever it comes to!
11:19 The torque force you need for that screw is 123 Nm. Page BR 39 from service manual.
Best repair videos on RUclips. Ivan and Eric are some best master mechanic on RUclips. I have learned so much from them.
not enough shops take advantage of the test drive after the fix. It's awesome that you do.
Best way to kick off the weekend!
the sign looks awesome
Sir eric you are the absolute master of Brake Job videos big fan! 👋🏾🤙🏾
The camera looking both ways at each stop sign was a riot! I was gigglin'. NAPA probably just added the blue racing stripe, marked the pads up 7% and changed the name on the box, lol. Hope you and the fam-jam had a fantastic Thanksgiving. 🦃🦃🦃
Ride as long as you want, just keep the music playing. 🎶 Thanks for all the lessons.
Always love the ride along thru town
Nice brake job, I use all that grease and cleaning under hardware etc now. Does make a difference here in the salt belt!!!
I have learned alot from your brake job videos. When I use the Brakeleen I don't get the TA-DA but it always brings a smile to my face. Watching your videos are the reason that I was able to do the ones on my Jeep Grand Cherokee easily with no fuss or mess. Keep them coming.
Wouldn’t that be fun if the music would play every time we pulled out brake cleaner?
Thanks for the brake video.they are relaxing to watch.diag videos take too much thought to follow and as a ford transmission guy i will never fix a drivability concern on a chevy.
Great as always, Eric! Thanks.
Glad to see you look both ways at a stop sign! Made me little dizzy to be honest! Lol another fine brake job, Avoca is lucky to have you !
Great job Eric. Still loving your videos.
5:49 “ They all come with a free bag of chiclets, but boy they dry your mouth out like crazy” had me laughing out loud. To think, I’ve just been throwing them away all these years. Thanks for the great content.
Like your video's we are in Austin, Texas and been working on vehicles for a long time you operate your shop like we use to here in Austin keep up the good work.
Nothing like a nice SMA brake job. He's the best!
Nice work! We’re driving far less too and I’ve noticed my brakes getting a bit crusty as a result. Salt here in south east PA isn’t as big a problem as up there though, so usually a quick spay down with brake cleaner does the trick.
I just did an oil change on our GM 3.0 LF1 alloytec and was disappointed that the repair shop that had been doing regular services had not changed the sump plug washer and the thread was balled also had been leaking oil for a while as it was all over the gearbox. Eric keep up the good work.
The outside of the shop looks really nice! Like the new color scheme.
Excellent video. You crack me up with some of your comments.😊
Thank you for all your videos. They really help the poor schlep that works on his own stuff like me!!! Merry Christmas
Thank you. I now find that even on simple nut and bolt type jobs (diy), I'm able to do it faster, cleaner and better overall. Thanks again for sharing 🙂.
Did I mention that I got my SWEET SMA Hoodie jacket? No? IT IS WARM AND COMFY. I had to put the hood on just yesterday and it works!! Adjusted at the factory. I love my SMA hoodie jacket. Everyone should order on soon!! Oh, and great video!! Love the brake jobs and the engine teardowns.... awwww shoot. I just love SMA videos. Thanks Eric O!!!
Yay!! Yay!! Wooohooo!! A brake job!! These are typically my FAV, because I just love the procedure and consistent way you do the brake jobs. Thank you!! Need more... Lol Merci
Your banter is hilarious! Thank you for the morning entertainment.
Not even 20 seconds in and LOVE the hat🇺🇸. Every video gets a 👍 but how can you not with a legalize freedom hat. Keep it up at SMA. Love the content, watch everything even though I don't own it all. It's given me the confidence and phase saved me thousands. That's Eric O!
Brings back memories the old do as I say not as I do, dad would say this seems like every 5 minutes but he love doing thing the hard way. Haven't heard that saying for a long time but today I'll be thinking of dad . Thanks
We were driving down from a ridge top and he spotted a nice buck up the hill above the road. He says load my gun and hand it here. Looks both ways "Don't ever do this!". Leans out the window and shoots it.
@@michaelvangundy226 bin there dun that. Too
I especially enjoyed the music when you drove around your nice and green town.
Good info presented with a jab of sarcasm. Thanks for posting.
@South Main Auto Repair LLC You are correct. That CRC grease will still be good after most steel alloys are liquid. The melting point of Carbon Steel is betwen 2500 and 2800 °F! I'm not a metalurgist either but did work at some steel mills doing research.
The bad news is: the brakes got so hot they melted. The good news is: they didn't bind up!
Always a good morning when it's with Eric O
Nice to see the brake kleen back in action. It was nice to hear gingerly is still kicking!!!
As always great info from sma...cheers
Those backing plates don't look long for this earth.
Great job.
Bag of Chiclets in the Brake Rotor box. Once again, the best running commentary on RUclips.
been a tech 15+yrs at GM, Honda and Nissan. now independent last 2-3yrs. master tech at one point. let expire. you do as good of job as any other prolevel tech ive worked alongside. myself included. point is dont listen to the haters. trolls will b trolls. love the content brother
At my shop, I always check, notate, and top off fluids and air pressure before sending the car out. And simple code reads if the light is on. Gets some extra jobs and protects me from irate returns.
I use the German specs a lot on my rigs. I do torque the critical things to specs. I use brake cleaner on almost everything! It will melt acetate screw driver handles and plastics. I tell others use at your own risk! Great video!
Napa did do a huge rebranding you are correct
Same parts different boxes.
Been using the CRC silaramic brake grease for almost 2 years now. We get it in the little tubs, even comes with a free applicator brush 😮. I like it a lot better than the Permatex lube.
Oh, where I work is also a Napa Auto Care Center. Welcome to the club 🙃
“Loosely” not a word? .38 Special begs to differ with you.
Another great video! Thanks much.
The difference between a skilled mechanic and a parts changer!
Just about died with the chiclet joke. I don't think my keyboard or my nose will ever be the same again. My wife didn't think it was that funy, but there was just something about the dead pan, matter of fact way you said it that made me choke on my coffee.
Keep up the good work. I know sometimes they can seem like they are all the same when you are making videos, but each one is educational in its own way and what you may not learn in one, you learn in another. I know you keep saying not to listen to you, but you are a superb teacher. Perhaps even moreso by telling people to take the time to look things up for themselves rather than just taking your word for something.
Oh yes, and here is hoping you had an excellent thanksgiving.

Slow day at work, nice to have a SMA Brake job video.
I read 62 ftpd... Thanks for bringing us!!
My only regret in life is that I don't live in upper New York so when I need it I can take my car to you for service. OK, I have other regrets too but a lot to be thankful for also. Love your videos!
Yeah new whore is great if you like $10000 school taxes on a $200k 900 Sq ft home. My family is getting out of this prison dystopia ASAP
Now that's high quality entertainment Mr. O.... Thanks for sharing!
