The 1st Scary Movie is an absolute iconic movie and classic. Culturally it was everywhere. For months and even years after its release, you would hear or see a reference. I mean look at the wassup scene. Everyone around age 30 I know knows about it.
"Shriek if you know what I did the last Friday the 13th" was also another parody movie on the horror movie genre released in the same year as the first Scary Movie film and easily gets overshadowed and overlooked by it.
Why didn't you bring up what the Wayans brothers said about them not even owning their idea and the studio cutting them out? The first 2 were funny because the Wayans family knows their stuff and write the first 2

@@IAmTheDoctor00 I think you misunderstood me. Scary movie is to Scream the same as White and Nerdy was to Riding Dirty. The parody surpassed the original creation.
@@HolybasilYTSomeone lied to you, in no way has any Scary Movie ever came close to the impact and success of Scream, if you asked someone to name a character or moment I doubt they could, they're one-note ripoffs of existin' ones, Scream redefined the slasher genre and has iconic characters with plenty of shameless parodies and real life murders linked to it
SM 1&2 were the biggest movies for us burnouts when they came out. I feel like 3 and on lost the magic. Don’t be a Menace to South Central is probably the best parody movie ever imo. The fourth wall break always gets me. “She got more kids than Miss Wayans.”
These movies were so funny to me as a kid! My favorite part is still in Scary Movie 3 when the guy cocks his shovel like a gun and a bullet comes out 🤣
Except Scary Movie 3 is the best one in the series & it's not even close. The focus on dumb wit rather than shock value just amplifies the humor. SM1 also oddly had nothing to say about scary movies that Scream didn't already say - they could've gone further & made fun of the meta, hyper-aware nature of modern horror, but they just remade scream with some d!ck jokes.
Agreed. I can rewatch Superhero Movie and chuckle a few times...but with the others (Date Movie, Meet the Spartans, etc.) it took me several attempts to get through them and I've never even thought about rewatching them.
My favorite pary of melbrooks is how quickly they went from one gag to another. A lame gag like "candy gram for mongo" was so short it didn't matter if it didn't land.
Credit where credit is due.. Walk Hard is legitimately one of the absolute most hilarious movies ever made. They parodied music biopics flawlessly and just in general it's a good movie with an actual plot and incredible characters. Shit even the songs are extremely well written as well as genuinely funny. Personally, I think Walk Hard is easily in the same league as the first Scary Movie and in just my opinion I think Walk Hard is actually the better and funnier movie out the two. I could spend the next 15 minutes recapping all the tropes that they nail perfectly but I'm tired so instead, I think everyone should just take the time to go back and watch Walk Hard again. (I'm willing to admit that the fact I am a big fan of the music/celebrity/historical biopic genre and thus all the jokes skewering that tropes from that genre land really well to me because I am so familiar with them. That may be why I appreciate and love Walk Hard as much as I do. But it is still a comedy masterpiece whether you get all the references or not.)
That's awesome to hear that Mel Brooks is making another movie. In the beginning of the video, when it brought up Mel Brooks, the first thing that came to my mind was "that dude better make at least one more movie before he dies."
I grew up loving Mel Brooks and The Zucker Bro's films. I think one parody film you're missing to connect the generations is Major League. Anyway - yeah Scary Movie holds a special place in my heart because it really was a parody made with love. It got over the top, crass and silly but it never lost sight of what it was doing. You said it best though. Good video!
Agreed. First and second movie (especially the first one) were great. It was a "made for fans by fans"-type of deal. I love when that happens, because the genuine passion is there. That's why I don't mind smaller budgets, since it tends to come with greater creativity. As you mentioned, Airplane and the Naked Gun movies and also Mel Brooks' movies, are gems. I just feel disappointed in the direction modern parody movies are taking. I'm a former filmstudent, and in its core my teachers were adament in teaching us to value quality over quantity.
I don’t know many creators whose videos I’d watch with scary movie being the focus. I trust you, though. I watched all the way through, and I like your take aways without the scary. Thank you.
I think the video missed one important thing: RUclips, TikTok and the rise of online comedy. Now if we want parodies, it’ll usually come about from creators on those channels and more timely since they’re quicker to make
There was a time around the late 2010s where there seemed to be kind of a boom of soft rebooting horror films by making sequels that ignored previous sequels and continue from the first and I thought that was a good moment for somebody to revive the franchise. I think Jordan Peele would probably be able to successfully do it.
I just watched the second movie last week with my sister & after all these years, the way we belly laugh never changes. Truly something from our childhood that has not lost its luster for us.
Thanks to Scream and I Know What you Did Last Summer - New Nightmare was a bomb inspiring no one and predates Scream - which set off the meta schtick and IKWYDLS was a successful earnest horror film with little meta that got that side of the ball rolling harder.
I'm surprised Will Ferrel wasn't mentioned here. His filmography is practically a case study of the diminishing returns of parody movies. I guess his movies aren't strictly parody, a fair amount of them were just comedy that had elements of parody in them.
I really enjoyed Stranger than Fiction. He isn't meant to be a comedy actor. He isn't funny, his films aren't funny, and his attempts at zaniness just fall flat every single time. But he is a solid actor.
1: timeless classic 2: really frigging good with some humor you wont get unless you was there that year 3:pretty okay. Worth a rewatch at least a few times with a couple iconic moments Anything after i walked out of the theater
The Wayans "In Living Color" comedy show was not a "moderate" success -- it was one of the top TV comedy series of the late 1980s and early 90s along side "Simpsons", "Married with Children", "Kids in the Hall", & "The Ben Stiller Show". It was so popular that it launched Jim Carrey's career in film (despite the fact he'd already been a stand up comic & actor for a decade peviously with little success) as well as the Wayans own careers in show business.
Yea but at the height of in living colors ratings peak shawn was just the dj known as SW.1 and marlon only made background appearances until the last couple seasons, keenan, damon and kim where the ones that were shining
@@RespectTheJuxx That's absolutely true but besides the point. The video claims In Living Color was only a moderate success, it was not, it was very successful and groundbreaking back when it aired.
I was wishing there would be a parody film called "Animated Movie." It would have all of the crass humor of the Scary Movies but it would have people dressed up as characters from the Disney Princesses to characters from Toy Story etc. I guess the closest we got to a animated movie parody was "Shrek."
The thing that Naked Gun and Scary Movie and the Mel Brooks movies have in common, is they are all well written, plot driven stories, with organic jokes through out. The common thing with the failed parody movies is they are all a loose collection of jokes that are kind of connected to a theme. The former are classics that are held up as pinnacles of comedic story telling. The latter are forgotten as soon as the theater seats cool
Honestly, Scary Movie 3 is my favorite out of all of them by a landslide. I distinctly recall kinda liking the second movie and being utterly underwhelmed by the first one. Guess it's all a matter of personal taste.
Fucking hell, the last fifteen minutes of that movie were like a fever dream. I thought I was too stoned and rewatched it and went “….oh, that was what happened.” It was wild. Daniel Radcliffe absolutely killed it. I can’t imagine anyone else playing Al that well.
Somebody should make "scary game" a parody of resident evil, silent hill and until dawn. With over the top action, cheesy one liners and ridiculous dialogue choices with a narrator who breaks the forth wall.
I really loved this video! Just found this channel! This was a really great observation into these films! I always wondered where things went wrong and why they got so bad!
This video didn't even mention my favorite parody movie, "Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th". If Scary Movie is a parody of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, than a Parody of a Parody would be "Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th". I know the film isn't as mainstream as the others, but it's super nostalgic to me. I watch it every Halloween.
Scary Movie 1 is probably one of the only (not even just parody) comedy movies that's written perfectly from start of the movie until the credits roll. The time it was set, the kind of humor we liked back then, the freedom writers had, all that accumulated to a great movie. Stand out performance from Regina Hall. Stand out performance from Shannon Elizabeth. Also Anna Faris is phenomenal in all movies. Now this sounds like it's the best movie in the world. I'm not saying that at all, but the first movie deserves a 10/10 just for, first, hiring a perfect cast and second, compiling all these stories to pace the movie where you don't get bored at any time. Also the setting up and transitions into jokes. The entire garage scene, the transition from the interview to the reporter drooling into the camera like in Blair's witch, Shorty getting shot and then sucking the smoke back in so it doesn't go to waste... Admittedly, there is maybe one scene or two that were unneeded like the whole scene in the living room when they play hide and seek (that was really dumb), but everything else was I would say to this day 10/10, as a rating of how well the movie was made in general. Goes to prove you don't need insane amounts of money and famous actors to make a good movie.
I honestly have the scary movie series to thank in getting over my childhood fears of the horror genre. I can always find something to laugh at in these movies now and give me a way to enjoy them opposed to being to scared to understand anything.
I don't think I ever saw 1 and I only remember 3. Tried to cram The Ring and War of The Worlds/ Signs into a cohesive overarching story lines with the aliens somehow involved with the girl in the well. I remember a Matrix parody in it. And Leslie Nielsen was in it. That's about it.

I don't know that I've ever laughed as hard as I did the first time I saw Scary Movie, during the scene with Cindy and the gym teacher. So glad I saw it in the theatre, everyone was dying the whole movie.
Ah yes, Ms. Mann!
I loved the first 3 Scary Movies. Horror movies used to terrify me and funnily enough, Scary Movie 3 actually helped me get over The Ring!
Yes! Same here. In fact, I used to be kind of scared of even the Ring portrayals in Scary Movie 3 when I first watched it. But, because I had a big appreciation for SM3 in general, I kept watching, and eventually became desensitized, lol
I have a soft spot in my heart for this genre of films as I grew up in the early 2000’s. Some of the biggest laughs of my childhood stem from these movies
Same. They're not great, but something about the genre just does it for me and I still laugh at the jokes. Shamed to say but low brow movies like Kentucky Fried Movie and Movie 43 have me belly laughing the entire time.
Same. Especially Scary Movie 3 and Suoerhero Movie. I have watched those over and over. Great fun.
@@sammartina8574 Nissan Shitbox still gets me to this day 😂
@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 From Superhero Movie! 😂
U seen Freddy got fingered?
I've been loving the naked gun and police squad clips lately. There's just something different about that style of parody
There’s one clip that makes me laugh every goddamn time. They’re looking for someone and determine he’s in the Red Light District.
Frank asks something like “What would bring a man to the red light district?”
Ed asks “Sex, Frank?”
And Leslie Nielsen has the best delivery of “…not right now, Ed.”
That man was a comedy genius.
Superhero Movie is actually really underrated
Yeah that one doesn't belong with the others. It was directed by Criag Mazin who has recently directed a lil indie hit show not many people have seen called "The Last of Us"
I was about to say, that movie still gets referenced today.
That one is amazing. Maybe not as good as Scary Movies 1 and 2, but still.
Agreed, it's actually a really good parody movie
Disaster movie too
Scary movie 1, 2, and 3 are comedy gold.
*1&2
@@iarland9693 I agree 1 & 2 are comedy gold. Number 3 is still good but definitely different.
Number 4 is eh too many forced jokes & plot was stupid.
Number 5 is trash and I only saw the first 20 mins until I just had enough
@@jenniferbayarea5748 3 has more “white guy humor” 1&2 had more jokes for the “culture“ So if you’re white I can see why you like the 3rd.
@@youngrosie1 the fact that you’re coming onto all my comments saying the same thing shows the ignorance you said and I’m not white

I always wish Detention had gotten more attention - it’s an amazing movie that manages to parody multiple films and genres, is smart and doesn’t have to explain its jokes and EVERY single joke in it has a pay off and plays into the story. Such a great film.
I always felt that Dewey Cox never got enough recognition. I loved John C. Reilly in that parody.
I have to admit, Meet the Spartans is a guilty pleasure
🤮
I wouldn’t be surprised if you also liked Starving Games
@@JWWE7903 no

Yes! I’m very glad you covered the scary movie series!
Scary Movie one and 2 were a big part of my childhood. 3 had its moments but it was all downhill after 2
Truth!
Exactly! 3 was a downgrade and 4 and 5 should’ve never been made
I don't think so
3 was great imo
4 is okay because i love Wotw
I didnt even watch 5
I strongly disagree, 3 was fantastic.
It went from "funny movies with original jokes based on franchises that matter at the time" to "whats trending? Throw some internet memes on it"
If Malcolm D. Lee could've done a better job directing a Scary Movie in the 2000s
Have anyone seen UNDERCOVER BROTHER?
"You mess with the fro...you got to GO!"
"It's time to release our secret weapon. I call it...black man's kryptonite."
"heck if I know..affirmative action??!"
Why didn't you bring up what the Wayans brothers said about them not even owning their idea and the studio cutting them out? The first 2 were funny because the Wayans family knows their stuff and write the first 2
Wrote* sorry for being THAT guy :p
Very true the Wayne’s brothers had something good but unfortunately got took away from them
@Andyy L you're not sorry if you were sorry you wouldn't have done it. It's a RUclips comment, not an English exam

I’m glad you mentioned Popstar. I’ve always thought it was weird how nobody ever talks about it. I thought it was great. Extremely underrated. Also, Walk Hard is one of the best comedies of all time.
Ironically, series writer Craig Mazin is doing pretty good rn with Chernobyl and The Last of Us.
Scary Movie (1) was like Weird Al's White and Nerdy to me. I saw it before I saw the movie that it parodied.
Lol how did you miss that song xD it's not in my taste but even I think universal was playing it when I was there one day its was nearly inescapable for a while.
@@IAmTheDoctor00 I think you misunderstood me. Scary movie is to Scream the same as White and Nerdy was to Riding Dirty.
The parody surpassed the original creation.
@@HolybasilYTSomeone lied to you, in no way has any Scary Movie ever came close to the impact and success of Scream, if you asked someone to name a character or moment I doubt they could, they're one-note ripoffs of existin' ones, Scream redefined the slasher genre and has iconic characters with plenty of shameless parodies and real life murders linked to it
Scary Movie 3 is so hilarious, the rap battle always gets me
"And Martha Steward happens to be my hero"😂😂😂
Dewey Cox is legendary! One of my favorite films.
And yeah the Scary Movie franchise was totally a blast. I wouldn’t mind a parody movie resurgence.
SM 1&2 were the biggest movies for us burnouts when they came out. I feel like 3 and on lost the magic.
Don’t be a Menace to South Central is probably the best parody movie ever imo.
The fourth wall break always gets me. “She got more kids than Miss Wayans.”
What are you talking about, SM 3 was great
Love your channel man! Love the credit you gave the Wayans!
Superhero Movie is such an underrated gem as a parody film and so much more relevant now at the closing times of the current superhero movie boom
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is the last truly great parody movie.
Good video!
ah man,, no mention of Jane Austen's Mafia! my favorite when I was a kid
'You can trace them all the way back to the 1900s'
So...twenty-four years ago?
Super Hero Movie is actually pretty solid. It loses some of its momentum towards the end, but it's decent overall
Walk Hard was awesome, it and Hot Fuzz are the only parody films I return to over and over again.
I don’t know many creators whose videos I’d watch with scary movie being the focus. I trust you, though. I watched all the way through, and I like your take aways without the scary. Thank you.
SCARY MOVIE 5 should've come earlier
It came out at a time where the parody genre had died
Scary movie 1 is my go to movie whenever i’m bored or can’t choose what to watch.
Superhero Movie is an underrated masterpiece, pretty much the only parody movie after Scary Movie 2 that was genuinely really good
In scary movie 3 when the guys face is blurry in the picture and in real life KILLLS ME EVERY SINGLE TIME
The Scary Movie franchise died when the Weinstein’s decided to fire the Wayans after the success of the first two movies
I think the video missed one important thing: RUclips, TikTok and the rise of online comedy. Now if we want parodies, it’ll usually come about from creators on those channels and more timely since they’re quicker to make
Scary movie 1+2 and Not another teen movie were my favorite comedies of my teens
1: timeless classic
2: really frigging good with some humor you wont get unless you was there that year
3:pretty okay. Worth a rewatch at least a few times with a couple iconic moments
Anything after i walked out of the theater
Scary Movie wasnt the same after The Wayne bros left. that was the major difference
1 is probably the best parody film ever made.
I was wishing there would be a parody film called "Animated Movie." It would have all of the crass humor of the Scary Movies but it would have people dressed up as characters from the Disney Princesses to characters from Toy Story etc. I guess the closest we got to a animated movie parody was "Shrek."
I personally think the third scary movie movie was the best
By a landslide.
Yuck 😆
Agreed. Love the farting chair scene with the Oracle
And they’re veeeery dated.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights was like that too, sadly. What a shame.
Spoof film come back. Please.
Request: The Inevitable Downfall of the Ice Age Franchise
Honestly, Scary Movie 3 is my favorite out of all of them by a landslide. I distinctly recall kinda liking the second movie and being utterly underwhelmed by the first one. Guess it's all a matter of personal taste.
Kung Pow Enter the Fist was a masterful parody of martial arts film and it's criminal that he was never able to make a sequel
The weird al yankovic biopic parody was one of the best movies I saw of the last decade
Fucking hell, the last fifteen minutes of that movie were like a fever dream. I thought I was too stoned and rewatched it and went “….oh, that was what happened.”
It was wild.
Superhero Movie is pure gold
I really loved this video! Just found this channel! This was a really great observation into these films! I always wondered where things went wrong and why they got so bad!
The first 4 will and always be the best.
3*
Scary Movie was a one hit wonder.
Sound dumb af the 2 is GOATED
This video didn't even mention my favorite parody movie, "Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th".
If Scary Movie is a parody of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, than a Parody of a Parody would be "Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th".
I know the film isn't as mainstream as the others, but it's super nostalgic to me. I watch it every Halloween.
How have I never heard of this parody before? And it released during their prime. I'm definitely checking this out this weekend, thanks!
Personally after 2, i didn’t like any of them (3 was ok)
The world needs Space Balls 2!!!
No idea Mel Brooks was making another film. So excited!
The first 2 scary movies were the best. Everything else that followed was a cash grab
3 was a cash grab, but it was still bloody hilarious.
@@ignatiusjackson235 agreed!
The rise of the internet is an incredibly important part of the equation that this video neglects.
Lesley Nielsen as the president in scary movie was fantastic
I honestly have the scary movie series to thank in getting over my childhood fears of the horror genre. I can always find something to laugh at in these movies now and give me a way to enjoy them opposed to being to scared to understand anything.
I don't think I ever saw 1 and I only remember 3. Tried to cram The Ring and War of The Worlds/ Signs into a cohesive overarching story lines with the aliens somehow involved with the girl in the well. I remember a Matrix parody in it. And Leslie Nielsen was in it. That's about it.
I always thought RUclips played a hand in killing the parody movie genre.
I was rewatching these the past week XD Now this video.
Superhero movie holds up since they essentially tried to create a superhero movie, and then layered the parody on top.
Came to say this. It definitely holds up
