I love that Ragnar turned his death, which was meant to be the punishment for his crimes against England into a ceremony for his ascension to Valhalla, and a warning for the English lords about the coming horde led by his sons. I can’t help but wonder if the pause between his 2 statements was him thinking about how in the end, choosing Odin and the Norse Gods would prevent him from every seeing Aethelstan in the after life.
You realise that he was a murdering, graping lunatic who deserved to be tortured and thrown into a pit of snakes. He was a barbaric lunatic who killed for personal gain, also his heathen army was eventually defeated by Alfred the Great. Those of you who venerate savagery shall die savagely.
Ragnar in the end didn't believe in any god; there is a conversation that Ragnar has with Hecbert, where he says "...I'll say some speech about the gods..." (I'm paraphrasing I don't remember the exact words) refering that his final speech is still part of his plan (that's why he was so ahead his time). He must have said it in old english so everyone there could have understand, and if any viking investigate a little, will know his last speech about the "gods". So if he didn't believe, I guess there was no point for him to believe that he was gonna see anyone (including Aethelstan) again. "If the gods don't exist, they don't exist, and we have to live with it." So nihilist of him.

Thanks to Athelstan, Ragnar knew how to make a Christian PISSED at him, which is most likely the reason that he made a speech claiming that "My death comes without apology", yet think about it this way... "I won't apologize for living my life to the fullest". In the end, I think that he came to understand that the two religions were extremely similar in many ways. All you Christians have God, while the leader of the Aesir is Odin. Christians hold male angels, and Pagans hold female Valkyries. He fully understood that this was going to be his death, so he had to make a choice. With his sons being Pagans, he chose the Gods over holding nothing. He calculated and weighed out his options. Honestly, all he knew growing up were the Gods, his honor, and how life in general was a battle.
Viking blood runs through my veins but this show never intrigued me. Perhaps i should watch it to find what all the fuss is about. Especially after learning they tried to keep it as accurate as possible
