This is his response to what they claimed they'd do. Notice he challenged every son that said they'd kill him and not those that did not

I think a really underappreciated aspect of this scene is the sheer admiration of Ragnar in Ivar's eyes
even after so much time has passed Ivar cannot feel anything but pride while looking up at his father, not any of the remorse of his other brothers
sure Travis' perfomance steals the show, literally, cause the show dies after Ragnar died, but Ivar's actor sure did put up a fight
Actor who played Ivar was the only reason the show was bearable because of Ivar when they stopped messing around with him

This man isn’t chewing on the scenery he’s straight up leisurely picking at it like it’s his own personal feast. And he does it every god damn time
That scene will always be the most memorable to me. It showed Ragnar as a broken man who internally suffered from regret and failure. He wanted to die. And that moment when he just hugged Ubbe showed how sad he really was deep down inside.

Ubbe was the only one who stepped up, who rose to his father's challenge. Note that Bjorn was not involved in this scene, as he was not like his brothers. Ubbe is embraced by his father for being most like him of his siblings, silent and stoic but willing to step forward. Bjorn knew it was not a real challenge and Ragnar was not ready to die; he was seeking acceptance and apologizing for being the father who left, the chief who abandoned his people. It was an apology to the young sons he left; that's why it's only for his younger sons and not Bjorn (who historically was the one who actually did the coffin trick in Paris, not Ragnar)

Nobody really wanted smoke with Ragnar... he was on another level. Love Travis's performance as Ragnar. Just goes to show how much the weight of a man's ambition and passion can really be. Ragnar truly wanted the best for his people and to bring prosperity and ensure his people were able to live and prosper on the lands that the Christian's refused to truly share. And this in turn was so heavy it began to break him slowly. Trying to keep the expectations of the people up and losing so many of the people he cared about as well as loyalties shifting.
Ragnar was the spark that ignited Norse conquest into new lands in every direction, an act that established his folk as a real power for the years to come. Rollo was the one take his people to the next level. He cemented a legacy that allowed Norman's to rule over Europe for millenia. Ragnar was a warrior farmer. Rollo was a warrior politician.

I'd have to say ubbe as well. The way he faces down the other two first, as he knew Ubbe has the courage to actually challenge him. Everything about his walk towards ubbe seemed to speak of a man on the edge, ready to draw the sword in the ground if needed. a part played masterfully by all the actors involved though.

Nobody can ever replace the affect Travis had on set. Not a single show or movie about Vikings has surpassed this nor even caught my interest besides Vikings Valhalla n the last kingdom. Both are decent but can never be better than Vikings. Ragnars character was that to behold, such raw amazing talent in acting n Ivar carried after his death. Each character had so much impact on me n it was amazing

Thank you brother ! , Very respectable analysis and observation !! , Your Ideas are great but I don't think they match the body language and the emotions of the scene , my main point when I started making this beat was to make something very high energy , intense and slightly overwhelming , but when I looked closely at this particular scene , I changed my mind a little bit as I wanted to make something that matches the anger and disappointment and sadness of a father who got stabbed in the back by his OWN kids , so I tried to make it match Ragnar's emotions rather than his kids because in my humble opinion I don't think it makes sense to make the power dynamic focus even slightly on them in this scene .
Also increasing the energy by bjorn's entrance would be quiet pointless because the scene ends there 😂.
