The lyrics of this song are based on one of the books of Edda: Völuspá, which means "Prophecy of the Seeress" ("Volva" in Old Norse = "witch", "seeress", "wise woman"; hence "voluspa" = "prophecy of a Volva")
@@nealjt13 You're welcome! Lyrics of "Voluspa" by Wardruna are directly taken from the Book of Poetic Edda named "Voluspa" - "Prophecy of a Volva" (Wise Woman, Seeress, Witch). The book presents the core of the Nordic Mythology related to the beginnings/creation of the world (or Worlds - parts of the Tree of Yggdrasil, of which Midgaard, or Earth is a part), its development, destruction (Ragnarok) and rebirth. It describes all races/kinds living in the Worlds, encluding Gods, Giants of Fire (Muspel), Giants of Ice (Jotunn), Humans, Elves (Alvar) and Dwarves (besides, Tolkien based names of all Dwarves from "The Hobbit" onto this book; Gandalf also appears there, albeit as a Dwarf).

I finished my PhD thesis with this song. While I was writing all alone during the lonely pandemic winter, after listening 2 weeks non-stop, the zikr (rythmic breathing) in this song reminded me of Islam and my roots, so I cleaned myself Islamically (gusl) and prayed the midday prayer first time after 15 years. Eventually it didn't hold on that long, so in the same evening I bought a bottle whiskey and got drunk in the evening and shook my head in the living room and did some tungusic throat singing, still the same song in the background. These details don't matter really, but I just want to put the emphasis how great this song is and it can take you to a large spectrum of different worlds!! Hail King Ragnar!
I agree. It sounds like many cultural backgrounds in one song. You have Scandinavian, throat singing so maybe Inuit or Mongolian and it also does sound middle eastern.

I am from one of the Baltic countries, hated church ever since i was a child, always felt it was forced on us even still we were the very last to convert (other villages slaughtered each other as a sacrifice to scare the crusaders just to avoid Christianity), we are the Baltic people. I always felt sad that our pagan neighbors turned to Christianity, every single time I get to visit the northern parts of Sweden, or somewhere in Norway around Trondheim it feels like Christianity if anything is unnatural to these parts it just does not fit for some reason. Does not sit right. Either way I am so glad that we are waking up, and the old traditions are coming back, the neopaganism(Romuva in Lithuanian sanctuary of the pagan Balts ) if anything is back on the rise and hopefully soon overtakes Christianity. It is actually recognized already as a legit religion again, and its allowed to be tought in schools and what not. Stay strong brothers we are coming home
"Neopaganism" implies that it ever went away - the Old Gods have continued to speak to us, even as the people around us rejected Them. The Romans forsook the Gods, and were punished with death and the collapse of a Golden Age Empire as a result of their impiety. We live in the Iron Age, as many such as Ovid and Hesiod once foretold - mankind pushed away the Gods, and so they departed from us. But soon, they will return to us, and the world shall begin anew, shaped once again in the Pagan image!
@@hinoishi3443 for starters i think this might be a good read www.reddit.com/r/history/comments/81fu8f/looking_for_a_good_book_on_baltic_paganism_and/ Otherwise if you want to get deeper in to paganism there should be rather plenty of sources. I did not really read much about it myself other than history classes i took and with our native language classes we talked a lot about these times. I think your best bet would be to google, or read up in wikipedia and go from there. Also probably best way to experience it is to visit the country itself especially in summer, either norway, sweden ( dont know much about them but im sure they still do have their pagan traditions and celebrations) as for Lithuania, we have plenty of old pagan traditions that are celebrated nation wide (pretty sure Latvia included), so if ever interested it is a rather good idea to visit one of these countries to experience it first hand :)

The lyrics of this song are based on one of the books of Edda: Völuspá, which means "Prophecy of the Seeress" ("Volva" in Old Norse = "witch", "seeress", "wise woman"; hence "voluspa" = "prophecy of a Volva")
Explain more….
It describes all races/kinds living in the Worlds, encluding Gods, Giants of Fire (Muspel), Giants of Ice (Jotunn), Humans, Elves (Alvar) and Dwarves (besides, Tolkien based names of all Dwarves from "The Hobbit" onto this book; Gandalf also appears there, albeit as a Dwarf).

viltu at ek, Valföðr, vel fyr telja

English translation by Henry Adam Bellows
1. Hearing I ask from the holy races,
From Heimdall's sons, both high and low;
Thou wilt, Valfather, that well I relate
Old tales I remember of men long ago.
3. Of old was the age when Ymir lived;
Sea nor cool waves nor sand there were;
Earth had not been, nor heaven above,
But a yawning gap, and grass nowhere.
57. The sun turns black, earth sinks in the sea,
The hot stars down from heaven are whirled;
Fierce grows the steam and the life-feeding flame,
Till fire leaps high about heaven itself.
45/47.
(45.) Brothers shall fight | and fell each other,
And sisters' sons | shall kinship stain;
(47.) Yggdrasil shakes, | and shiver on high
The ancient limbs, | and the giant is loose;
44. Now Garm howls loud | before Gnipahellir,
The fetters will burst, | and the wolf run free;
Much do I know, | and more can see
Of the fate of the gods, | the mighty in fight.
59. Now do I see | the earth anew
Rise all green | from the waves again;
The cataracts fall, | and the eagle flies,
And fish he catches | beneath the cliffs.
64. More fair than the sun, | a hall I see,
Roofed with gold, | on Gimle it stands;
There shall the righteous | rulers dwell,
And happiness ever | there shall they have.
full 45.:
45. Brothers shall fight | and fell each other,
And sisters' sons | shall kinship stain;
Hard is it on earth, | with mighty whoredom;
Axe-time, sword-time, | shields are sundered,
Wind-time, wolf-time, | ere the world falls;
Nor ever shall men | each other spare.
full 47.:
47. Yggdrasil shakes, | and shiver on high
The ancient limbs, | and the giant is loose;
To the head of Mim | does Othin give heed,
But the kinsman of Surt | shall slay him soon.

This song means a lot for me! Because this song helped me, when I walked through the dark times.

The dark times I'm still going through maybe one day but I doubt it I was heart to much
More than half of the interest in the show and in the traditional culture of north is just due to the huge talent of Einar Selvik (and others in Wardruna). Incredible.
I like this version so much better than the one in the music video-- this one sounds more like a war chant, and it gives me goosebumps!
Many religions , one root.

Either way I am so glad that we are waking up, and the old traditions are coming back, the neopaganism(Romuva in Lithuanian sanctuary of the pagan Balts
) if anything is back on the rise and hopefully soon overtakes Christianity.
Any history to read? I find this interesting. I am from Asia country
@@hinoishi3443 for starters i think this might be a good read www.reddit.com/r/history/comments/81fu8f/looking_for_a_good_book_on_baltic_paganism_and/
Otherwise if you want to get deeper in to paganism there should be rather plenty of sources.
