Cortina d' Ampezzo downhill seem to be one of the most risky. So many injuries have happen to athletes there. I couldn't believe my eyes today. Wishing the fast and the best recovery to Miki, Corinne and all the others. 🙏🏻
It's not risky if you ski THE RIGHT LINE. Everyone who crashed today at Cortina skied the wrong line. Schiffrin was completely on the wrong line cresting that bump.
One training run, and well off pace at that. It is one of the more challenging DH’s on the Women’s circuit. She even said the day before that she hoped to do better on race day because it had been some time since she was on the DH Skiis.. Probably an ill advised decision to start but what do any of us know what pressures they are facing to push out of the gate. Prep for 2026, GOAT bla bla, Team, Sponsors, and she is genuinely confident. The reality is this happens in ski racing. And for those that say poor skiing and and wrong, line, you probably never pushed out of a start house in your life. More than one of the best crashed out today.
AJ Hurt, I watched your second run in the WC FIS GS at Are today Mar. 9, 2024 several times. You made a number of mistakes. The most general was that you did not adjust your line higher as the slope steepened. Therefore you tended to be in the wrong position on the gates that were about halfway down or more. This made you skid/brake more. It put you out of position more. Probably as a result, there was one really bad turn sideways after a big skid/braking probably due in part to your too low line in that area. Partly the over skid and almost wipeout at that point was due to your turning sideways on the hill at that point. You want to always keep your upper body headed down the hill. Otherwise you tend to lean into the hill. That makes you lose your ski grip further on the hill. In other words you have to be leaning a bit down the hill with your upper body in order to get a good grip on the snow/ice. This makes your edges cant further away from the hill. That gives you better edge grip with your weight more fully on the edges (you then get say a 45 degree edge angle as opposed to a 20 degree edge angle that you get when you lean into the hill). Almost wiping out cost you a good amount of time. My fourth grade teacher had a saying, "Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle." She was right as always. Best Wishes, David White
I have never understood this sport (I have skiied for over 30 years), someone crashes in the downhill and it seems to take ages for anyone to get to them. Surely they should have people at any flashpoints for the skiers who may crash. Dreadful.
She's so tough. Refused the Heli on the course (walked up to get it off course so race could continue), refused the sled, used her poles as crutches. Her decision I'm sure. Best in the world because she has unmatched toughness and fortitude. Not sure what she said but it probably sounded like. " I got this...thanks for your help and support but I got this part." RESPECT

Although at different courses, the track and dynamics of Mikaela's and Alek's crash are eerily similar: both racers landed too far to the left after a downhill right jump, and then were unable to make the following downhill left turn because they were unweighted and off line. I agree with those who wish MS would cease DH. The risk/reward ratio is poor, especially for someone possessing her slalom and GS talent.

That course was not set properly for that turn. @cycleoflife The only way to stop a race is to cancel it. My take is that they should have moved the second training run to today, instead of cancelling it, and settled for one DH on the weekend. Call it whatever you like. It would take NOTHING to have all those with any official position to be told to go check and signal if the skier is conscious or not. You could give the simple command NOT to move the skier if they are unconscious or just let the skier know help is coming if they are conscious. I just find it incredulous that they'd just go past as if nothing had happened.
@@tonywilson4713 Everyone there has their own job to do - that isn't theirs. What has happened in a situation like that is that a call has already gone out over the radio from a gate judge or spotter to the race director to stop the race and call patrol/medics/rescue. All races have safety plans to deal with racer down situations like this. The slip crew knows help is already on the way. More generally: Look at 00:39. A downhill course is usually icy and steep. If someone tries to walk over, they will likely fall and be sliding down the hill. If you don't have the training, and proper equipment, you're far more likely to become another victim or further injure the racer than help.
What terrible organisation, for ages no one came to check on her and these 2workers just drove by to maintain the piste. A person could die if not helped in time. Makes me very angry, someone should be held responsible of the organisers.
yes but these 2 are *workers*, not medical assistants, nor medical doctors if they "help" her, they could possibly do more damage than it already is talking about broken parts, one wrong move and they can be invalid or all life. Specialists know how to handle situations like this.
100 victories is something only the media and general fandom think about or care much about. It's Crystal Globes and medals that coaches and athletes plan and work for.

Hi Mikaela it is very sad World Cup without you! I like very ski specjal speed so was very nice to watch you on ski you became for me very specjal really like beautiful flowers in spring don,t give up for ski
A poorly set up course; coming out at full speed after catching air and being forced to make an almost 90 degrees turn while having barely touched ground is a formula for accidents.
Not anymore. With only 3 Slalom and 4 GS races yet to come vs 13 speed races, she was in a real fight for the overall, and probably needed to accumulate a couple hundred points in speed events. Lena Duerr has an outside chance of taking the Slalom globe, but needs to podium all three races and get at least 1 win and 1 second place.
@@blindleader42 The overall world cup was almost a certainty. But why should she not race some speed events? She has done one downhill so far this season. Guess her place. Arrows should be drawn on the fence to indicate the direction of travel just in case a competitor momentarily loses concentration due to a critical event and may turn in the wrong direction in confusion. This is exactly what you can see in the video. Otherwise, the competitor quickly realizes the mistake, but it is already too late to correct the course. She tried to alleviate the situation with a controlled fall...
Is it just me or did she career into the Boulder just behind the netting. It looks like she hit the net and rolled onto a dark parts of it and then in another shop we saw a huge Rocky outcrop
Race organizers should have known that it was a dangerous turn. It was a GS turn in a SG event. SMH. And the 2 course officials skiing pass her is unbelievable... are they blind, just don't care or both!?!

Given all that crazy knee injuries in DH I wish somebody would come up with technology similar to bike back brace just for the knees. Otherwise competitive skiing can be more dangerous than MMA :((
It took a long while for any assistance, this is truly poor course management, and the ski tour should contemplate skipping this venue, for future contests.
Downhill has never been her best discipline. Obviously she didnt get set up for that jump, caught big and drifted left. No way she could have made the next turn.
Praying that Mikaela is not seriously injured. Wish her a fast & full recovery. Not sure why this course is so suspect & in my mind needlessly dangerous. Every year these course designers keep trying to push the envelope. Will a skier have to die to stop this madness. This is NOT enjoyable for me after some 50 yrs. of watching this sport. I'd still ask the basic question however. Why don't the people who are CLOSEST to a downed skier go to the skier immediately IRRESPECTIVE of the job?
I'm NOT expecting that the first person there would always be a medic but the first person available should go.
Call it common sense.
Call it basic human decency and concern.
Makes me very angry, someone should be held responsible of the organisers.
yes but these 2 are *workers*, not medical assistants, nor medical doctors
if they "help" her, they could possibly do more damage than it already is
talking about broken parts, one wrong move and they can be invalid or all life. Specialists know how to handle situations like this.
Suggestion: Shiffrin avoid downhill until hitting 100 victories.
100 victories is something only the media and general fandom think about or care much about. It's Crystal Globes and medals that coaches and athletes plan and work for.
So basically you're saying she should avoid DH for you? So that YOU can see her get 100?
@@blindleader42 No doubt she thinks about it (I think about it at least since 5 years). Then? - 125? 150?

Wow. She got help really fast! Sarcasm off/, well atleast there was two dudes in yellow wests skiing by.
I wish she wouldn’t do downhill.
Well, this is the very first time when she got injured during downhill.
@@coolgabe64 OK, in downhill it just takes one.
Who was that goddess singing? Beautiful voice. Hope the best for Shiffrin.
Her name is Sofia Goggia. Great footage. Google her. ❤
Not a seasoned downhill viewer, but the response to MS’s crash seemed slow and unprofessional.
Seemed like no one really care or that’s a normal reaction in this sport?
What reaction are you talking about, the course workers who continued doing their job of slipping the course? There's absolutely nothing they could have done but make things worse.
As for all the other participants, there's nothing they can do, and they still have a race to run, because the race _will_ go on.
that's really horrible. No one here talk about that. I was shocked. Somebody lie here like dead and nobody cares
@@edualc99 they are not allowed to interfere.
No; that's completely wrong.
I don't understand why Mikaela Shiffrin does compete in the downhill, as it's risky and she can win the overall worldcup without it.
Not anymore. With only 3 Slalom and 4 GS races yet to come vs 13 speed races, she was in a real fight for the overall, and probably needed to accumulate a couple hundred points in speed events.
Lena Duerr has an outside chance of taking the Slalom globe, but needs to podium all three races and get at least 1 win and 1 second place.
the speed elitist will say she's not a real skier
@@tongpopyro2691 Is that you saying that or putting words in other, unidentified mouths?
Either way, you know nothing. Go away.
@@blindleader42 The overall world cup was almost a certainty.
But why should she not race some speed events? She has done one downhill so far this season. Guess her place.
I'm sure she was aiming for Maze's seasonal point recod (2414) and to get 100 world cup vicories as soon as possible. And then? 200 victories is out of reach. 150?
@@keinKlarname Lara Gut-Behrami was, and is still in striking distance.
I guarantee that in no way, shape or form has she ever considered attacking Maze's point record. She was tired after Kranjska Gora, and decided to skip Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in order to get and extra day or two of rest and more training.
That course is brutal to the downhillers. Wishing Mikaela a speeding recovery.
Someone please explain to me why a clearly injured skier has to limp themselves off the course instead of having a snowmobile there?
I honestly had a bad feeling about this race... I really hope it's nothing major and she can recover quickly.
Latest news - „Good“ news. Mika will only need 1 or 2 weeks break, it’s an injury of the inner ligament in the knee.
0:31 hard to believe the way her knee bent there... what a beast she is!@@atomicskifans

The same thing day later. This race should be canceled.
Mikaela didnt look like she was comfortable from the start. The course seems dumb putting a huge left turn after the rollers . No run out and no way to dump speed ...Dang I hope she takes some time.off Looks her Kilde Petra and Mikaela need a couple weeks in the Bahamas to relax. She may still win the overall title even with some time down.
She must have felt rather lonely waiting for the rescuers. It’s true that for some people it was difficult to see that she was lying half dead!
within the first seconds, one can see she's not into it, struggling to get speed, refusing the obstacles. why is she competing in downhill with not an ounce of downhill technic and motivation ?
can't believe the course workers skied right by her! WTF I've been Ski Inst. and a race coach for 40 yrs and never would have skied past a downed racer like that unless ski patrol was already there and didn't need help.
Amazing athlete. Rest and recover. You’ll be back on top again !
Would think a safer barrier would be designed to protect skiers. Other sports have designed more absorbable barriers to reduce or remove injury
Tak ako Mikaela, aj Petra sa snazili do poslednej chvile ostat v preteku Bohuzial, obe sa zranili. Prajem skore uzdravenie Mikaele i Petre
Is it just me or did she career into the Boulder just behind the netting. It looks like she hit the net and rolled onto a dark parts of it and then in another shop we saw a huge Rocky outcrop
Get well - and welcome back, Mikaela!
I think she bailed on that one. She had the wrong line to make that turn
any news on her conditions?
The organizers of this course need to go back to the drawing board. Olympic games here in two years, maybe it will be fixed. Shiffrin is a beast!
Abfahrt ist kein Kindergeburtstag, da kann alles passieren, zum Glück nur leichte Verletzungen im Vergleich zu Kilde 👍
Who was that woman who smirked when Shiffren crashed?
I hope the injury is not so bad.

Shiiiiiit..she went into the netting hard and it didn’t move much. Hope that she’s ok. Downhill is bonkers.
She never landed after that jump, very tough top section.
Their sponsors make them compete in riskier events. This lady makes millions.
Hope you’re OK didn’t look good❤
Latest news - „Good“ news. Mika will only need 1 or 2 weeks break, it’s an injury of the inner ligament in the knee.
Race organizers should have known that it was a dangerous turn. It was a GS turn in a SG event. SMH. And the 2 course officials skiing pass her is unbelievable... are they blind, just don't care or both!?!
Gute Besserung Mikaela💪🏼👍🏽😊
Horrible gate placement on that curve after a lofted flight going into it........I'm surprised there weren't more wipe outs........
She is okay from latest updates.. anyways no more crash replays, no more blood on youtube no more words even like k****,.... why picturing a fairytail word for everyone, cant even see any historic documentary without all sorts of filters in...youtube ????

I thought dainese had airbag vests for ski use already.
There is a problem with the new skis ... so many injured, something is wrong.

Quick recovery Miki❤❤👍
Using her own poles to limp off the hill?? Just in case anyone forgot what a badass this woman is!!! All the best, speedy recovery!
She is tempting fate every time she enters a speed event. Damnit Team Shiffrin, Be smart and stay with GS and SL, Stop the arrogance,

I wish Mikaela a quality recovery and a return to white tracks.
Given all that crazy knee injuries in DH I wish somebody would come up with technology similar to bike back brace just for the knees. Otherwise competitive skiing can be more dangerous than MMA :((
Head injuries are also a theme in DH skiing.
Unacceptable that it took so long to get help to her. And they make her walk out.
No one has immunity from snow snakes, get well soon!
First Kilde and now Shiffrin. Double trouble for the super couple 😥
It took a long while for any assistance, this is truly poor course management, and the ski tour should contemplate skipping this venue, for future contests.

why did she lay there unassisted for so long and then have 2 course guys ski right past her?

Wow wtf fire all those medical personnel.
Downhill has never been her best discipline. Obviously she didnt get set up for that jump, caught big and drifted left. No way she could have made the next turn.
Any news of her condition? The last one was that she doesn't have a tear.
According to italians doctors - “Initial analysis shows the ACL and PCL seem intact. Further details to come.”

Thats good news. A week off in the Bahamas is my advice
This daredevil type skiing is so unnecessary to showcase the beauty, intricacy & athletic challenge of a course or to showcase the best skiers. Investigating the course after a serious injury or death is too late. Fix the darn course stop the madness. Not appealing at all.
Une bosse, une porte juste derrière, et les barrières de protection à quelques mètres. Je ne sais pas comment on dit en italien, mais en France on a un terme: traquenard!
This turn has gotten a few people
That was one of those banana peel wipeouts. Just lost concentration it looks like. Thank Goodness for those nets though!
This was the weirdest fucking video ever…..did they not even know she ate shit?! 2 people ski’d right past her like ehhh other people are coming
