- In this video series, Seki Sensei, an 8th Dan Iaido master with 40 years of experience in Musō Shiden Ryu, will introduce the fascinating Kata trained in this Ryuha. He will explain in detail the assumed situation of the battle and the points you must be careful of when you perform it. This is the perfect video for all Musō Shiden Ryu trainees and anyone interested in Iaido to deepen their knowledge about the techniques. However, please understand that there are many different versions of the Kata of Musō Shiden Ryu, and what we introduce in this video is what Seki Sensei has learned from his father. It is not the absolute way of performing the techniques, and we have no intention of denying other versions.

The Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu, of which Seki Sensei is the 22nd headmaster, was one of the most popular Ryuha styles during the Edo period. In our golden age, we had over 7,000 students nationwide. Today, we only have 100 students. Our dream is to revive the golden age of Asayama Ichiden Ryu while Seki Sensei is still the headmaster. These are the kind of details that a western instructor will never teach you...because they don't know them!
Even the most advanced ones, with their 7th dan of iaido, will never be able to transmit this kind of fine details of MSR.

This really reminds me of the Chinese Miao-Dao from Ming dyanasty, when there were lots of conflicts with Japanese pirates.
There is also a starting pose named 藏刀式, or "dao hiding form" to begin with. Very fascinating thing rooted in both cultures.

There is also a version of Shinobu which uses the kashira (the pommel of the sword handle) to protect the blade.

Muso Shinden Ryu was part of the curriculum at the school I attended. We were taught that the Kata called Gyaku To was changed after the war. Does Seki Sensei know the original way to do it?
