In 2001, defending NASCAR Winston Cup champion Bobby Labonte fell victim to an internet hoax. Before the race at Auto Club Speedway (then California Speedway), a rumor circulated that he had lost his life in some sort of accident. The internet spread like wildfire and it took Labonte and his PR guy 3 days to clear up the confusion, even though Bobby clearly won the pole for that race at Fontana. This video briefly explains what happened and who started this horrible rumor.

He didn't die, he just regressed very quickly.
Damn 💀
imagine chilling and you start hearing rumours about yourself dying 💀
Insanity bro
I’m a lifelong Bobby Labonte fan, how am I just now hearing about this 😂
lmao
This isn't even close to the worst rumor that has been spread around the garage area . Some of us remember Tim Richmond .
I bet some crazy things were said about him for sure
@@JakeSimRacing Because of my job back then I had exposure to teams and drivers .The Petty's were among the worst offenders on and off the record.Harry Hyde was one of the very few people that took up for Tim .
@@Trackratz-zl9di Not surprised Harry took up for Tim. Even in the documentary on Tim, Richard was dismissive of him years after the fact
@@JakeSimRacing I don't think I have ever seen that documentary.
I saw the documentary on Tim Richmond, the comment Earnhardt said to Tim's crew chief was jaw-dropping. Something about you better check every weld on that roll cage cause that man has a death wish. That's pretty badass 🏁
No but his career was dead after 2000
Awwwww lol
I have NEVER heard about that until now. Wow....
It got lost to time for the most part
Whoever put out that rumour is an idiot for doing that crap. I think you should be fined a few hundred dollars for trying to fake someone's passing. I also find that very respectful, and the fact that this "rumour" came 2 months after Dale Earnhardt sadly passed away. Both disrespectful to Dale R.I.P., and the rest of NASCAR in general. And this was in 2001, I thought people in North America including Canada had more common sense compared to today.
Sadly people were still idiots back then!
Airbase speedway is coming back from the dead and will be hosting a cup race in 2025
😳
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an associated conspiracy theory that Labonte passed away and was replaced by a double. 😂
I’m sure something like that probably happened too, couldn’t find any more info lol
I never heard this before but that's what I was waiting to hear, considering how Bobby's career went after this lol
LOL This is definitely some NASCAR lore I never expected to unearth
I had forgotten about it too until I saw it again. It’s such a weird story
I'm proud to say i was there in august 1999 to see him win at Michigan.
Awesome! I’m sure it was fun
@@JakeSimRacing it was a experience. something i would never do again.
Lmao somebody must've immediately found Bobby's reboot card
Lmao
Within the first minute you lost credibility. You showed a picture of the proposed CNY Raceway park that was supposed to be built in Bremerton Ny, no Hawaii.
I mentioned the Hawaii track as a hypothetical, it wasn’t a real rumor.
I’ll probably go to hell, but the delivery of the line “Labonte received a call informing him that he was dead” made me laugh. On a more serious note, I’m so glad it was only a rumour as I was always a fan of Bobby.
Haha true! Bobby’s always been a good guy
I never knew this and I’ve been a nascar fan all my life
I can’t find any information on it online
The article should come up if you google “bobby labonte rumor”
@@JakeSimRacing I found it
Crazy how I’ve never heard about this until today
And it’s a surprise it hasn’t happened again with the rise of internet trolls and numerous celebrity deaths
