I was in Edale years ago and my late friend Pete we were on Kinder Scout! I was taking photos and we watched a black Cat! In a field with sheep it was twice the size of them I did take photos of it and spoke to the Farmer and he said it had been spotted a few times! Plus when the Big Cat licence came into effect in the 70s and do believe that some were released into the wild

40 odd years ago whilst Pike fishing in Perthshire a mate and i put up a large cat that bolted up the lochside in a flurry of dead leaves . we got a good view and both agreed it was a lynx . We never told anyone other than some fishing friends as we were both delighted to see them in Scotland . Fast forward to about 7-8 yrs ago and a friend of mine walks into the pub and hands me a paper clipping about an eldely couple who had been visiting family but had pulled into a layby on their way back to Aberdeen to have their flask of tea . As they were sitting a large fawn / brown coloured cat walked across the road from the woods and down to the side of the Loch .They got a very good view of the cat and noticed the ear tufts . This layby is appx 2-300yds from where we had scared the cat all those years ago........they must be managing very well , i am delighted to say .

Hi cookie I got a big cat story,so me and my mum was at a park and we saw a black cat with no collar I just thought it was a stray till I saw it a bit closer and it was bigger than a normal cat.It doesn’t stop there. The next day me and my mum went into the forest right next to the park, this area was famous for sighting, and this old man stopped to talk to my mum I continued on and looked through a broken fence. And saw a big cat run through the clearing.I got it on video but lost the charger. Then when we went home my mum said.”The old man said that his friend, lives on a farm, and he saw something black and big and he was gonna shoot it but he didn’t know what it was. That my story

I live in the Norfolk countryside and I've seen a big black cat while walking my dog. It was in a field that was very open and I could clearly see it wasn't a house cat, the curl of the puffy black tail was visable. It was walking quite low to the ground and when it heard me it's head turned and it froze on the spot. It then got up and carried on walking off in-between the trees. I have also spoken to people who have farm properties in the area and have seen big cats in the past here 😊👍

Saw one in Bucks, just outside of Beaconsfield in the early 2000's. Was late at night as I was leaving a friends after having helped them move in to their new flat. As I drove up and out of his road onto the A40, a small deer ran out in to the road fron the hedgerow opposite. It stopped in the middle of the road when it saw my car and kept looking back toward the hedgerow and then back at my car. It did that for much longer than a deer would normally hang around once startled, before turning round and sheepishly walking back toward the hedgerow. At which point I noticed a small movement to my right in the hedgerow. It was autumn/winter so there was no leaf on the hedgerow and with the car headlights you could see through it to the field behind. Sat in that field, behind the hedgerow was a cougar, which had turned its head to follow the path of the deer back into the hedgerow to its right. It was the weirdest thing, so weird that it took my mind a long moment to process what I'd seen. To be clear, it was beyond any doubt a cougar sat in a field in Bucks. You can say all you want that they're not here, but that one was!

Me and a friend while driving on the back roads of epping ended up driving round a corner slowly and bumped into a massive black cat around the size of a great dane. Both of us see it with my car lights right on it . This was 11.30 at night and I drove to the nearest police station and reported it because I thought it had escaped from a zoo. 1997 was the year and ill never forget the big cat just looking into the car headlights and not being to bothered just slowly walked into the woods .

Years ago I saw a documentary where a guy who keeps several big cats in a rescue operation in the south west ( which sounds a bit mental to me now ) said he had a large black leopard stalk around the cage of a cat he had that was in heat. He would seem to be a very good eye witness.
So I mean this comment thread seems show the reason people still talk about a big cat there. People still see them or at least they did in the 90’s. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone found out there was a pet that was constantly being allowed to roam or something.

I have always been suspicious why we can't get a clear photo of a big cat in the wild in the UK. But yet in every other country they exist. You can make a feature length documentary. I think for a project you should go to a country with leopards or cougar and film them. To show that they aren't Bigfoot.

Hiya cookie there is Big cats but the last time I saw one was 20 years ago when I had lambs and horses. I live near tarleton west Lancashire.
My parents house back to a 20 acre field which was full of rabbits.
One morning my mum was bottle feeding the lambs in the paddock and at first she thought she saw a golden labrador out on it's own on the field. Then she realized it was a big golden colour cat by the way it moved its shoulders and it's very long tail it was chasing the rabbits.
Then one evening when we were feeding lambs in the paddock I was skitting her saying there no big cats then I saw my mum looking on the field. so I looked and there it was a huge puma running with a rabbit in its mouth. Since then she saw a big black panther when she was walking the dogs. All I will say is just because you haven't seen one doesn't mean they are not there. They are very elusive and normally keep out of the way also the media never tell you the truth about anything. There was domestic cats going missing at that time too.
    Their territory is enormous.
I really hope I see one again, I love big cats.

It was a black leopard but with legs thinner more like a cheetah. Just looked at each other for a while and as I stepped forward it turned and trotted off. ( I have a pet cat , this was a leopard no doubt ) Other shooters have seen it too . Magnificent creature , doubters think that they would be dangerous. Look at what they live off in Africa. UK perfect with pheasant, deer, foxes, badgers, fish farms, rats around farms, …………… they are here and no problem at all. 👌

I have held plaster cast prints of cat paws taken in South Oxfordshire. These were from paw prints found round the base of a tree where two deer stalkers called for help due to a large cat circling the base of the tree. Those prints were positively identified by a zoo as being puma prints. The casts were made by police scenes of crimes officers. I have also recovered the remains of a small deer in Berkshire that had a large puncture wound in the throat, and all the flesh along the neck stripped clean. Vet advice was that this was undoubtedly remains from a big cat kill. Having spoken to locals, dogs were spooked from a small copse in the same area. Some were VERY interested, others pulled away. Paw prints seen, and a large dark animal with a low, sweeping tail seen.
Incidentally, a documentary series on mystery animals presented by a very well known UK naturalist concluded that the presence of big cats could not be ruled out.

A few years ago there was a video circulating of a leopard/panther walking across a garage forecourt in the early hours of the morning, caught on cctv as clear as day. I tried to find out if there was a follow up to this, but could find nothing. It seems these things are kept hushed up so as to not alarm the public, but there was no denying this sighting.

There have been a few escaped big cats shot, captured or run over by cars in Britain over the years. The legend definitely has a kernel of truth behind it, but it's still a big leap to say there's any kind of breeding population, and most of the sightings seem to be bogus when you dig into them. The one thing that the legend has in its favour is that people really underestimate how secretive wild cats are. There are people who live their whole lives in wild cat habitats and never see one. It is actually possible for them to fly under the radar. In 2007, naturalists in Spain discovered that there was an entire breeding population of Iberian Lynx in Castilla-La Mancha that they hadn't previously known about, and hundreds of kilometres away from the species' heartlands in southern Spain. It's really not impossible for them to go unnoticed.

Big cats are out there, but all the hoaxers prevent the real research. Best thing to draw a big cat in is to cover your body with fresh steaks, and sit on your own all night in the forest of dean , playing the constant sound of a chicken coup in distress.

In the late 1970s there where big cats that where pets released into the wild. This was when the Dangerous Animals License act was passed. However most of these cases where single cats released in a given area so the 70s and 80s there where big cats in the wild however by now all of those original beasts will be dead of old age. The only reason for their to be big cats anywhere in the uk wilds is that a breading pair was released. It is most unlikely yet it is theoretically possible as there are still areas of untamed woodlands with enough game. So most unlikely for them.

I'm afraid I have seen two, both at dusk. First about twenty years ago, passenger in car light brown colour, smallish (large dog size) with big long tail, crossed road straight into the undergrowth. Definitely nothing other than cat. Recently on bike, twenty or thirty feet in front, just saw large and black furred disappear into the undergrowth at side of road. I did not see a tail, so made me think of a bear! But no bears in UK. And as I went passed and saw were it went through thick vegetation with pasture on other side, made me think of rabbit land. Whizzed off down the road a bit quick! So think there are cats here in Essex but wonder if they can breed ? 🐆🐆

There were big cats released back in the 1960s or 1970s when the new animal laws came out stopping regular people from owning big cats.
People have admitted to releasing their pet big cats onto Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor instead of having them put down.
But I don’t think any of them are still alive now in 2024 (don’t know how long they live for but it’s not that long) their is definitely not a breeding population of them wild in the UK and if so they would be inbred so much that well who knows Dartmoor alone is a massive place.

Big cats are are rarely seen as they are shy and or hide to stalk prey etc. It's more likely they will see you but you won't see them. Many years ago, it's said that some were let loose due to a change in the law about keeping them as pets etc, At that time people did not have much tech, so once seen and reported they had poor camera pics or did not have any picture evidence as not many people carried cameras around with them. Today everybody has phones with cameras. There would be many sightings and footage if there are big cats roaming the country. Also sheep and other wildlife carcasses would be found regularly. If a big cat seen a field full of sheep, it would kill and eat and would keep gong back for more. This would make headlines big time.

I bet not many of the “sightings” are by outdoors people. It’s also amazing how many of the sightings are black panthers. No such thing, several large cats have black pigmentation as a mutation and Panthers is a scientific name or part thereof of several of the large cat species. No one seems to report large cats with jaguar or leopard colouring
