Pentatonix is an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying (baritone), Mitch Grassi (tenor), Kirstin Maldonado (alto), Kevin Olusola (vocal percussion and vocals), and Matt Sallee (bass). Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, basslines, riffing, percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off, receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music.

That actually wasn’t Mitch’s falsetto. He was in his mixed for most of this song. He is a counter tenor with a range of 6 octaves plus 1 tone. And whistle notes. He is a master at transitioning through his ranges, and can belt very high notes. He and Scott did a duet of ‘Defying Gravity’ on their side channel, Superfruit. He actually ended higher than the original song. And their ‘costumes’ are hilarious. He does shine in this song, though. 🥰

You definitely need to check out more Pentatonix before you say that all their harmonies are just "expected and not a surprise". Their body of work is SO diverse, and while this is absolutely beautiful and one of their best PERFORMANCES, in my opinion, this is one of the few songs they do where they stuck so close to the original, without changing so much. Normally they really do, and their harmonies tend to be a lot more complicated. They are a cappella on a whole other level as far as their diversity.
I enjoyed your reaction, but you definitely need to hear more from them, because they are simply reinventing a cappella constantly in a way that I don't see Home Free doing. Don't get me wrong, Home Free is talented, but as far as creativity, Pentatonix is just another level. Maybe check out their Daft Punk, or Bohemian Rhapsody, or Imagine if you want to see complicated "unexpected" harmony.

    • @heidi_d

100% agree! However in Bohemian Rhapsody they pay INCREDIBLE homage and respect to Queen, and don’t really stray with their arrangement/harmonies.

He claims to be a Band Teacher. To make those statements that are categorically false is unfortunate to anyone who listens to this "adult" Band Teacher. My guess is he is a Home Fry and only covering this to pacify a request. Then he needs to say nice things to pacify the request. But he then draws a line in the sand where he defends his favorite (yet uniformed). Thanks for making your clear and correct rebuttal.

@@SolaScriptura777.4me2 One of the things I find most incredible about them is their unusual and gorgeous chord choices, along with the stellar arrangements. They stayed true to Queen in this. I can almost close my eyes and hear the original! However, this is one of the only songs they do that with. I believe they knew it was an important (and potentially controversial) tribute, they wanted to pay it proper homage, and there’s no doubt they did that. For more on their creativity as a band, you MUST listen to pretty much ANY other song. 😊 Peace!

@@bobcieslinski I'm glad you'll be checking out more, I really think you'll be surprised at the diversity in their arrangements :). They have a way of turning a song on its head that is simply unrivaled! Also, in addition to my other suggestions, if you want a very good example of how they creative they can be, they recently covered "Over The River" (Over the river and through the woods - that song lol) and the arrangement is so different and amazing.
Also, another thing to note, is that they do occasionally use an instrument in their arrangements, but if that is the case, you will see it in the video. In that particular video they use a cello (played by their beatboxer, who beatboxes WHILE he plays it) and a violin (a collab with Lindsey Stirling, who is also fabulous lol)

This is a masterpiece from Pentatonix and A Capella at its very best. PTX are masters of their game. Mitch Grassi is a counter tenor and a vocal acrobat, he can climb up octaves, do vocal slides, sing in various registers, has exquisite runs and vibratos and is able to mimic various sounds including musical instruments. He is a once in a generation talent and he sang with such conviction and emotion, as he always does. Scott excelled with his baritone and operatic voice singing in Italian. Kirstie sharp and belting with that vibrato. Matt on the bass so warm and smooth underneath. Kevin the master beat-boxer is amazing. Their harmonies, solos, duets and the signature PTX Wall of Sound pull this all together. This really deserves a Grammy. Please do more PTX reactions. They are a phenomenal group.

Dude, PTX is way more dynamic than Home Free…IMPO. Your basing them off of one song-both are strong in their own right, but PTX is just on another level, if you keep listening to Pentatonix you’ll see that, they’ve released two albums that are originals plus a tone of remakes on popular hits they wrote/co-wrote-one is with their old Base Avi and the most recent one “the lucky ones” is with their new base Matt. Don’t get me started on their Christmas stuff! It’s extensive!!
In the 10 years of listening to them they’ve never missed nor disappointed me on their arrangements, from ballads, techno, EDM, r&b, pop, classics, 5part harmonies-they’ve won 3 Grammies thus far.
This group is the best in the accapella genre. Amazing and sound just as good in concert than the recordings:-))
PTX is more diverse in they’re music and arrangements….
I get tired of ppl comparing PTX to HF. Esp when they’re in their own genres/lanes…I’ve always preferred PTX harmonies over Home Frees…but that’s my ear and taste.
Each group has rightfully earned their following by working hard and being true to their fan base.

But PTX has a very diverse style and can do many genres. Their talent (PTX) is unmatched! HF took lessons from PTX! It would be worth it to check out Gold, cover of Kiiara! As a band student, many years ago, I have a high respect for band teachers and their knowledge. I'm so glad you comment on the arrangements of Pentatonix. I mean, it's obvious that they have absolutely AMAZING voices, but I think they are genius in their arrangements. I would love to hear what you have to say about, what I believe is their most intricate arrangement, Carol of the Bells. I know it's past Christmas, but music is eternal and should be enjoyed every day. In that song, they have some amazing overlapping melodies. I thought they were counter-melodies at first, but it's even more impressive that they're not. They even have a bass line harmonic section where Avi and Scott both take on the bass tone. It just absolutely blew me away. Would love to hear your thoughts. :) And I can't leave until I thank you for the part you play in your students' lives. Introducing and fostering a love of music into a young person's life is something that resonates for a very long time.

  • @terrilabeth
    @terrilabeth 2 года назад

This was 3 months ago and I must wonder if you have gone back to watch this done by Celine Dion and Andrea Bochelli? I do believe when you have that as a reference point you will understand better some of the arrangement choices they made for this song. The Prayer by Celine and Bochelli, as you might imagine, was, at that time (1999), a VERY big deal. You can imagine how that must have been, two powerhouse voices singing a duet with a background orchestra. Now we have this arrangement by PTX and you will notice it is a series of Duets, Scott/Mitch, Scott/Kirsten, Mitch/Kirsten and Scott/Mitch. I believe this was very intentional as a nod to the 1999 Dion/Bochelli duet version. Then we have Scott signing in Italian, in opera style, a direct nod to Andrea Bochelli. Next, how to gain that nod to an orchestra sound with some of the sounds, the beginning background bells (voices in harmony), and the fullness, hence the last section, with Kevin doing his best beat boxing ever and Matt holding those beautiful bass notes to drive the entire song along. I believe all of this was very intentional, they wanted to do it in a PTX way but with a reverence paid to the 1999 Dion/Bochelli version, which in many circles is much treasured. I respect that honestly. They are talented enough to totally switch this song up but they chose not to do that and that nod to the original, to Dion/Bochelli, is what makes it extra special, IMO. 💕

Funny, Ben Folds (check out his Wikipedia page if you're unfamiliar with who he is) was a judge the year (2011) PTX competed on "The Sing Off". He commented several times after several of their performances, that "Surprises are a rare occurrence in music, yet you give us 1 or 2 in every performance." (There were a total of 12 performances. You should react to them all. All 3 judges were blown away. Do 1 a week and you can get through all of them in 3 months. You won't regret it. And us Pentaholics will join you every step of the way. Getting back to this performance of "The Prayer", the surprise is that Mitch sang the part that has ALWAYS been sung by a woman. No one but no one expected Mitch would be singing that part. Everyone expected it to be Kistie. BIG SURPRISE! Also, another thing that will surprise and amaze you is that there is no genre they will not tackle & conquer. HF is great at Country music, but they rarely veer from it. Plus, it's a total "men only" club. They do make some beautiful music together. But, as in life, things are so much more interesting when men & women collaborate. PTX is nominated for another Grammy this year (February 5th. If they win, it would be their 4th) and they're getting their star installed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame later in the month. They are so worthy of it all. Btw....HF won "The Sing Off" the year after PTX won.

The alternate language is Italian based on the Celine Dion/Andrea Bocelli video from many years ago, the recording that made the song famous. It was originally written by Carole Bayer Sager for an animated movie "Quest for Camelot" where Celine was the singing voice of one of the characters. However, the words were SLIGHTLY different in the movie as it was a "mother's prayer" and it was all in English.
By the way, Mitch isn't singing nearly as much falsetto as you imagine. He is a counter-tenor, the highest recognized male singing voice. He's often higher than Kirstie, who is a mezzo-soprano. You want surprises? Try their version of "Carol of the Bells" or the "Making Christmas" song (from the movie "Nightmare Before Christmas"). Or watch "Bohemian Rhapsody" and get ready to marvel at their incredibly accurate arrangement that puts a little bit of spin on it - but was good enough to attract a compliment from Brian May, who was Queen's guitarist.

PTX pulled out their classical sound for this!! The Prayer was in the movie Quest for Camelot in 1998. Celine Dion sang the English version while Andre Bocelli sang the Italian version. They released a duet of them singing together in 1999. Josh Groban got his career start when he filled in for Andre at a rehearsal of The Prayer with Celine for the 1999 Grammy Awards.
Scott, Mitch & Kirstin grew up together in choirs & musical theater. Their choir teacher was at their Dallas Christmas concert that I attended & they honored her. Can you imagine? So amazing! The surprise here was how they threw around the duet beginning with Scott& Mitch, the Mitch & Kirstin then back to Scott & Mitch. Mitch’s soaring with chromatic runs was stunning & Scott’s strong baritone in Italian made our Pentaholic jaws drop! Celine & Andre would be proud of this cover!
My all time favorites of their Christmas music is Carol of the Bells! They originally released it years ago when Avi was the bass & re-released it this month on the BYU tv special with Matt. I think that both HF and PTX are amazing groups, but I dont think HF stands out from the two for having more complex or surprising harmonies -in general- though this one traditional, chorale cover is intentionally true to form. They both have some religious or traditional songs that they play close to standard, and they both have some with surprising arrangements. I would actually say that HF has more predictable arrangements if you are familiar with country arranging, simply because their audience tends to prefer it and they have less of a repertoire in general, since pentatonix has released so much music. Your mileage may vary, but I definitely would love to see more reactions to both groups.
Mitch has a very high voice naturally, and while he definitely uses a masked mix, I think most fans of his stay away from the word falsetto because in many parts of the world (including some parts of the US) it has negative nuances or implies an entirely head "false voice."
Just some thoughts for your consideration, I'm glad you enjoyed the cover.

That’s not falsetto... Mitch is an authentic countertenor, so the high tessitura lines are naturally easy for him! Home Free is a more of a country vibe! You want to hear complex harmonies from PTX ? Listen to other songs like Daft Punk, Angels We Have Heard On High! Minor 9ths! The Cadence was not a I V I cadence! It was an Aeolian cadence with a Picardy 3rd at the end!

Hey Michael you are right about the countertenor. I mentioned falsetto but it was not what I meant. Mitch has a beautiful free flowing head voice. I will check out thr other songs thanks for the suggestions and for the information and nice comments.

Pentatonix actually won the singing contest television show The Sing Off In 2011, the year before Home Free won. If you get time, I would watch those episodes as well. It will give you a better sense of where they came from, and who they are as a group. (...or were before Avi left. Lol)

This song was written by David Foster. For Andrea Bocelli. And then Celine Dion started to sing it and each of them separately and then they made it a duet. It is not a Christmas song but it is on the Christmas album this year. Pentatonix at Shear perfection.

Uh... if you're looking for "surprise" you're reacting to the wrong song. This IS a "choral" piece they are covering. Did HF "surprise" you with their chords or timing on Amazing Grace or How Great Thou Art? Of course not. That would be disrespectful and inappropriate. This was an homage to Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli so it was played pretty close to the original. Look at some of their other videos (like ANY of their other videos) to get your surprises.

I've seen some of your other PTX reaction videos, so I know that you end up eating your words, here. (their harmonies not being a surprise). It's interesting you have also reacted to Home Free. Just a bit of information. Both groups, Pentatonix, and Home Free, got their start on a show called the Sing Off. It was an a capella competition. Pentatonix was the Season 3 winners of the Sing Off, and Home Free won Season 4. You should take a look at both groups' competition videos. You will realize just how versatile they both are!

As you fully noted how they can arrange their voices & harmonize is truly astounding. No matter the iteration of the group they know exactly how to make great songs even better.
