Yeah, I recall reading about this. I think the artists were encouraged to take things very far, knowing that none of it would pass Disney's approval, and they could essentially just work downwards from there. As you said, everyone involved knew it would never make it to the final game and that it would not have a tone this menacing or dark. I think it's a strategy that ultimately does make sense.

Same here, but with my brother instead. In fact, he always _wanted_ to be player two since he was so used to it, and cuz I think he likes Oswald more than Mickey anyway. That also means more paint and thinner for me!
I wouldn’t mind seeing that be a thing, the first game was pretty cool in terms of just basic idea and execution. Add in some extra content that was cut and boom you’re gold
Yup, the OG Disney character but Walt Disney didn't know the characters he made were owned by his employer so he made his own company and Mickey. Now his company owns most of the most popular franchises on the planet and strangles the public domain solely to keep hold of Mickey a little longer. In US, the copyright ownership law has been extended so much that companies hold IPs over 70 years after the creator dies. So if you're a fan of something, it's practically illegal to make any fan content until you're almost dead yourself.
0:43 “When a company attempted to be super ambitious and break new ground with this console” Oh yes, how could we forget the epitome of ambition... *Ninjabread Man!*
Evil Mickey: "Extend the copyright ownership laws. None shall raise through the public domain like we did. Death to fan content and derivative works!" Also I remember hearing about a time when a pre-school painted Disney characters on their walls to please the kids and Disney found out and forced the school to sandblast the characters off the walls. Yeah, legally they have a right to do it. It's their IP, just not a good PR move.
@@KittyKatty999 For the Disney ruining the public domain thing, look up the show Adam Ruins Everything. It was a show broadcast on American TV and as a sketch on the RUclips channel Collage Humor. Can't remember where it was from a sketch or the show but the episode on it listed its sources so you check the validity yourself. As for the sandblasting thing, it was a story a teacher at my school told me decades ago. I don't know if it's completely true but Disney is aggressive enough with their lawyers that it's believable to me.
As someone who grew up never having a “rebellious” phase, this game was incredible. It was the time period between first playing Kingdom Hearts and saving money to get the second game. I played Epic Mickey so many times that whenever people talk about it, I literally get nostalgia. I loved playing and replaying to get the different endings and to see what paint and thinner does to effect the world. And the fact that getting the full paint ending was harder than thinner really made me think about how good choices don’t always equal easy paths. I remember whenever I got into a new town, depending on the different endings that I was going for, that I would completely destroy the town or completely restore it. I mean, I’m sure if I came back to it years later that I wouldn’t think that it would be as good as it is. But from what I remember, and what I think about it right now, I love this game and I wish that people could see that childlike love that I still have for it. In regards to the sequels, I didn’t pick up the 3ds version because I got my 3ds later in life. And with the sequel, I dropped it pretty quickly. There was a huge difficulty spike with the platforming and I could never get the Oswald AI to work.
I actually played Epic Mickey 1 when I was a kid, and I remember reading the Gamestop review and thinking it was so unfair, lol. Literally the only thing I agreed with was that the camera was pretty bad. I will definitely say that the side quests are super tedious, and what pisses me off the most is that if you don't deal with the side quest right away or do something wrong you can fail your quest permanently, that pissed off my little completionist self.
The best part of Power of Illusion is when Rapunzel needs a hairbrush, so you borrow one from the Beast. This is what Kingdom Hearts has been missing all along.
That's probably why I never got into Kingdom Hearts, when I heard about it this is the kind of thing I expected, just a giant Disney crossover, but then I learned it was more to the Final Fantasy side of things (a series that I'm not a fan of), with extensive and confusing lore and lots of RPG elements and worlds I didn't really care about, so I never tried to come back to the series. But I mean, that was years ago, maybe I should give it a try now, who knows
Right? I was half-joking, but honestly, I do want to see more Disney crossovers where the characters actually interact. But with Kingdom Hearts mostly keeping characters to their own worlds and forcing you through absurdly abridged retellings of their movies, Power of Illusion is the closest we’ve come to that.
Tbh i liked KH...well 2 at least for spaceship building and crafting. KH1 was decent. Story for both was ABSOLUTE DOGSHIT Still it was a nice game with unique background graphics looks had the disney touch.
I'm really sad to see the first game be called just "fine" cuz imo it's one of the best Mickey games that Disney ever released but I'm glad it got recognition at all. The game is really nostalgic for me so haha
hes being overly harsh, the game is super fun and creative its way above fine, if you cant enjoy it cause of the camera get good i didnt have issues about it as kid nor now
I appreciate Disney taking a risk with their stand out mascot and making a more serious game, because sometimes you do need to try new things and not just use the same material. It might not have been that popular among everyone, but I personally think it's a pretty solid game storywise, and mechanic wise.
As a big Epic Mickey fan, you have no idea how ecstatic I was to see this in my notifications. Whatever opinion you got on the game Ant, still glad you gave the game recognition at all.
I guess that's the biggest takeaway from this video: At least the games got recognized on the internet... I just wished it was 20 minutes longer... or fifteen minutes.
Be honest, the epic mickey and kingdom hearts games are the most edgiest we have seen mickey mouse Edit: runaway brain and the the new mickey mouse shorts by paul rudish also has some edge to them as well
Epic Mickey is one of my favourite platformers of all time. Like, obviously it wasn't a great platformer, but it was so dark and depressing that as an angsty teenager I loved it so much!
@ationalwangjangler9642. Take the leaks with a grain of salt, of course; That being said, those do sound like something Purple Lamp would come up with, and the second game already provides a decent template for costumes based on various cartoons from throughout the decades. (Though there's other things that have to be fixed or added; For example, revamping progression.) Edit: Nothing on a sprint option, but the first two are confirmed and they both look awesome to pull off. (Though it's unclear if the dash attack is only a ground option or if it can also be used in the air; The latter would naturally give it more versatility in gameplay.)
Update: Since it is a remake, there wasn't a gameplay overhaul. But there are a few things I'd like to note. -The dash and slam ability were added, the dash is good for getting around and the slam is great for breaking things and negating fall damage. -Sprinting was added, you can press the left Joystick on consoles to start sprinting, it isn't a crazy amount faster than the normal speed, but it's noticeable. -Shadow blot got some new attacks -Spin dash now gives a tiny bit of height and double jump spins are much more used in the game's platforming. -Each projector now has 2 film reels opposed to just 1. -A new area in mean street called the cinema was added, it's the inside of the cinema building. It contains 8 rooms that contain all the projectors in the game, the rooms slowly open up as your progress. THIS ISN'T USED FOR BACKTRACKING. It's only used to replay the projectors and get their film reels. Because there are so many now. (Also, it opens up projectors that you missed, so if you had the decision to take one projector instead of the other, both will be available in the cinema, meaning that you can get all 72 reels in one run.) -Paintable objects have a white dotted outline around them to make them easier to see. -MUCH better camera -The game has rebindable controls -Gamma can be changed at any time, allowing you change the darkness of the game, if you want the original atmosphere, keep it low, if not, keep it unchanged. -Newgame+ is it's own button now, after you beat the blot on a save, you can do a newgame+ on it, you keep all collectables (Tickets, Reels, Pins, concept arts) but you lose your progression and upgrades (HP, Sketch, and paint/thinner capacity). Originally, you could only do this one time, but in the remake, it's infinite. -New UI for almost everything was added -Gyro controls can be configured at any time. -Unsure on this, but the E-ticket capacity was changed, because I never got any upgrades for it but at the end of my run I had 6000 and the cap is normally 1000. -Animatonic character parts are no longer in purple chests and can be directly picked up from where the chest would be instead. (Really no clue why this added) -Re-collecting collectables will give you E-tickets for compensation -White E-tickets are removed and replaced with the greens tickets. -Blue tickets worth 30 tickets can be found -Green tickets are now worth 15 tickets. -Golden tickets are redesigned and no longer have oswalds head on them, now replaced by mickeys (Ironic) -Gaurdians now have a meter, and pressing up on the D-Pad will send a white gaurdian that shows you where to go. -Changes in enemy AI and red/green blotlings. -You can pay 10 E-tickets to gus to skip the projectors that lead to the other main hub worlds. (Ostown, Bog Easy, Ventureland), this makes getting around the 4 much quicker. BUGS/PROBLEMS -Frame issues are a thing, especially on Nintendo Switch, where breaking too many things at once or have too many particles can slow the game down considerably. Not unbearable, but annoying. -Some cutscenes have desynced audio, for example the paint brush introduction scene and the rocket liftoff scene. -You can still get stuck and even softlocked in some places. Typically places with weird geometry. -Some places refuse to load, it's never happened to me but it's been reported. -You can still fail missions that you have already technically beaten, such as the raise the fire bridge mission, where you can raise it before the gremlin gives you the task to raise it. This causes the gremlin to give you the mission to raise the firebridge, but you've already done it and that makes you locked out of completing the mission. -Bog easy music for some reason plays the mansion theme -Male goats for some reason aren't in the game, this might be because the devolopers used the wiki for checking things and the wiki accidentally forgot that they were a thing and ended up replacing them with male cows/dogs.
@@jduce4051 I only got to the amusement park area, I thought it was too hard, and then years later I gave it to a “friend” which was an asshole a couple years later, and I regret it cause I would like to play it, cuz it actually looks fun
Honestly I'm not a fan of the more gritty and gross looking artstyle (Goofy in particular is really unpleasant to look at.) But artstyle aside they're fantastic. A ton of personality and they're damn hilarious.
You’re in luck because a remake was announced today, coming to all current platforms. And the visual improvements seem to be substantial. Better lighting, more detailed texture, even some higher quality models.
I remember my aunt bought the collectors edition of this game. At first I hated it because I didn’t know where to go. But once I did I fell in love with it. Epic Mickey 1 has a soft spot in my heart
I especially loved it becuase of the disney ride references. I remember seeing it as a kid and thinking the apocalyptic style to the rides like it's a small world were so cool.
When I was 10 I was TERRIFIED by this game. I played it some years later and I really liked it. It may not be the best platformer out there, but the atmosphere and style are what makes it unique
If Epic Mickey 3 ever happened, I think that the main villain would've been revealed to be Bootleg Pete from "Alice Comedies." Sure, Oswald might have been Walt's first hero character, but Pete came first, not to mention that a lot of people are probably not aware of Pete originally being a bear. This is kind of approaching fan theory, but perhaps all of the Petes that are in the Wasteland were made by Bootleg Pete, and they serve underneath him to keep on eye on things. Once Mickey arrives and takes care of the both of the games crisis, Bootleg Pete would've set his plan in motion to steal Mickey's heart, humiliate both Mickey and Oswald, and escape back to the real world. Maybe during the final battle, Bootleg Pete manages to summon the Phantom Blot again, perhaps as a last-desperate move after Mickey and Oswald foil his plans. Things either go wrong due to the Phantom Blot betraying him, or he ends up "fusing" with the it to become "Phantom Pete Blot" or something. (which would also be a great way to bring back one of the original plot points for the first game where Oswald fuses with the Phantom Blot, iirc)
Power of illusion wasn't bad, but it had some annoying enemies and tedious fetch quests in it... plus, the game ends before it gets good! Only 3 bosses man!
Man, I loved Epic Mickey despite all its flaws (that camera!). It had so much potential and its concept was actually very clever and oozed Warren Spector's legacy. Who, for me, made the very best action-stealth game of all time (Deus Ex), even to this day. I felt sad when it did not fully execute on its premist and what it actually could - no - should have been.
I got to play a beta build of the first game while taking a tour of Disney Interactive Studios. And the guy accidentally started me off in the final level too lol. Best birthday ever.
I remember hearing that if Epic Mickey 2 did well, then there was going to be a third Epic Mickey game and an Epic Donald game based on the Disney comics universe
I remember playing Epic Mickey and loving it, but as I grew I forgot about it. Then, this video showed up in my recommended and I instantly remembered the game(s) in a flash. Thanks for reigniting my childhood memories.
Just gotta add my piece anytime this comes up Warren’s concept art he made he said in an interview he said he was pushing it as hard as he possibly could for the concept to a point he knew they would be rejected and then they could go from there and tone it down a bit Unfortunately we were never supposed to see these early ones from what he says so that’s that. We got shown gold we never could have had
It makes me very happy when people post recent videos about Epic Mickey. It is a very nostalgic game for me. The same cannot be said for the sequel. It was such a disappointment that I beat it in less than a day. The only redeeming factor in the sequel is the admittedly cool bosses. But everyone should play the first game if they ever get the chance to do so.
it's very short if you just ignore all the side missions and went straight to the main story route, doing everything ( especially the hero or paint route ) will probably takes a week or 8 hour or so if you're fast.
I loved Epic Mickey 2. We had it on my family Xbox 360, and one day me and one of my best friends came over to my house to play the game. We beat the whole game together after a few days, and that game just makes me so happy.
Epic Mickey was my first horror game. I used to be a huge scaredy-cat when I was a kid and the dark atmosphere of this game was just the level of horror I could handle. It still gave me nightmares though...
I had this game when I was little and I loved it. I know it has a lot of missed potential but it introduced me to the world of Floyd Gottfredson's Mickey Mouse comics. Mickey used to be an actually funny and well rounded character who felt a full range of emotions in the 1930s. Around this time a Mickey Mouse Comic strip was created for newspapers. Floyd Gottfredson was brought on as a temporary artist for the strips but ended up illustrating the comic untill his death. The strip had a serialized plot and each story arc was even better than the last. They were all well written and had some fantastic art to boot. Each story was gripping and had elements of danger and mystery in them, as well as creating Mouseton and other characters that would influence the Mickey Mouse Comic universe. I would highly recommend buying the Floyd Gottfredson collections from fantagraphics.
I remember playing this when I was a toddler and I couldn't get past the first level because I was so scared of seeing a plunger trying to rip out Mickey's heart Good times
You're comment is making me feel old since I remember buying this game during Middle School. I still remember when the first trailer dropped and shown off at E3.
I really liked Epic Mickey 2. I wish there was a 3rd one. The whole aesthetic and concept of forgotten characters and a dystopian disneyland is so beautiful
Ahhh Epic Mickey was literally my childhood, so this is sooo nostalgic... I love all the games sooo much. The soundtrack and art style is amazing plus I'm so happy that Oswald was a big part of this game. Best Disney character hands down.
The Mad Doctor scared the bejesus out of me as a kid. I refused to play the Haunted Manor level, because I knew he was in there. I recently found my old Nintendo Wii Mini, and my copy of Epic Mickey. For nostalgia purposes, I decided to start playing it again. And WOW. It’s held up surprisingly well. It’s not the best game out there, but damn am I enjoying my digital trip down memory lane.
Anyone who hasn't listened to the clocktower boss theme definitely should, it integrates a super sinister sounding version of its a small world and its super cool
I didn’t play much of the first game (never got past Petetronic), but what I saw was incredible. The ruined Small World area was great! But you know what the best part was? The music. Small World’s echoing, clanking sounds and the Clock Tower’s whistling remix of the main theme are amazing!
This game was really cool for me. That clock boss though, and all the side content is so cool, along with the world and scary stuff. I never finished it though.
A remake developed by Purple Lamp, Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, is scheduled for release on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S by THQ Nordic in 2024.
Thank you for telling me who is developing the remaster (if it’s a remake, I wouldn’t really know as the announcement trailer looks like a remaster given how similar the game is to the original). I was genuinely curious given the developers were shut down alongside Disney Interactive’s gaming division back in 2016.
@@benstone4291. Would have to be a remake as the source code was almost certainly tossed out years ago when Junction Point was shut down. (And probably dumped into Mickeyjunk Mountain after Disney Interactive were shut down in 2016.)
I hope Antdude will talk about the remake because his retrospective on games are awesome and I believe hearing him talking about it will be great and he is a very reliable source
It's quite funny how people have been talking about Epic Mickey more nowadays. LS Mark made a video on it debating if it is just edgy or actually epic, Fawful's Minion made a Blessed or Messed on the video and now AntDude throws his paintbrush into the ring.
Hardly surprising tbh. I’m glad this game’s gotten a cult following and is quickly being recognised as the classic it is. As Ant said, it isn’t the best, but it’s the style and atmosphere that makes it stand out.

@A complete and utter mystery wait, what happened?
A remake of this series has been rumored for a while now
@Samuel Jackson spam the same exact thing if you're lying
Really? Would it be an exclusive, or for all platforms?
I wouldn’t mind seeing that be a thing, the first game was pretty cool in terms of just basic idea and execution. Add in some extra content that was cut and boom you’re gold
Oh yeah, they have! Wonder if it's gonna be just a remaster, a real remake, or a full on reimagining!
God please let it be real. I want this game on my switch
2 years later:WE ARE SO BACK!!!!
Ecstatic that Epic Mickey is getting a 2024 remake. I'm a sucker for classic Disney history and this series was such a dark, novel concept.
The best part about anyone talking about this game is that they also get to talk about Oswald.
Truuu
Yup, the OG Disney character but Walt Disney didn't know the characters he made were owned by his employer so he made his own company and Mickey. Now his company owns most of the most popular franchises on the planet and strangles the public domain solely to keep hold of Mickey a little longer.
In US, the copyright ownership law has been extended so much that companies hold IPs over 70 years after the creator dies. So if you're a fan of something, it's practically illegal to make any fan content until you're almost dead yourself.
0:43 “When a company attempted to be super ambitious and break new ground with this console”
Oh yes, how could we forget the epitome of ambition... *Ninjabread Man!*
Damn i remember that game..it sucked but i remember it lol
Wasn't it originally a PS2 game?
@@PFBM86 i think so but it also came for the Wii, thats where i played it
If you watched Rerez you'll see that NinjaBread Man got 3 more clones
Or Starfox zero
The concept for Evil Mickey is still around. It's just that it got infused with the Disney company itself and well...here we are.
Yep.
Evil Mickey: "Extend the copyright ownership laws. None shall raise through the public domain like we did. Death to fan content and derivative works!"
Also I remember hearing about a time when a pre-school painted Disney characters on their walls to please the kids and Disney found out and forced the school to sandblast the characters off the walls. Yeah, legally they have a right to do it. It's their IP, just not a good PR move.
@@PlebNC Evidence please? So I can share this story.
@@KittyKatty999
For the Disney ruining the public domain thing, look up the show Adam Ruins Everything.
@@PlebNC I can totally see that being a real thing that happened because Disney didn’t let a man have Spider-Man on his dead son’s grave
19:32 well well well .... look who predicted the future. Can’t wait to relive old memories !
Hell yeah, dude (Now, seriously, that will be neat to me)
That's probably why I never got into Kingdom Hearts, when I heard about it this is the kind of thing I expected, just a giant Disney crossover, but then I learned it was more to the Final Fantasy side of things (a series that I'm not a fan of), with extensive and confusing lore and lots of RPG elements and worlds I didn't really care about, so I never tried to come back to the series.
Story for both was ABSOLUTE DOGSHIT
Still it was a nice game with unique background graphics looks had the disney touch.
You're right, they never really used the disney stuff to its fullest potential
I'm really sad to see the first game be called just "fine" cuz imo it's one of the best Mickey games that Disney ever released but I'm glad it got recognition at all. The game is really nostalgic for me so haha
Ngl I only played the second one. I love ot
hard to find people who actually recognize the series lol
but going back to the first game, it really isn't the best compared to its sequel but i'll always love it lol
hes being overly harsh, the game is super fun and creative its way above fine, if you cant enjoy it cause of the camera get good i didnt have issues about it as kid nor now
I got stuck on the final boss as a kid and now I don’t play it cuz dusty old WiiU but if it got remade, I‘d love to :(

WELL WELL WELL
Precognition???
HOW THE F DID HE PREDICT THAT?!
@@Jessica_Kirkit was rumored even all the way back in 2021. Lots of articles going around back then that some sort of remaster/remake was coming.

Edit: runaway brain and the the new mickey mouse shorts by paul rudish also has some edge to them as well
Not quite. He's kinda supposed to be the "everyman", so many of his shorts have actually portrayed him as a little "edgier" than we usually see him.
“They’ll pay for this.” -Literally Mickey Mouse
Kingdom Hearts? Edgy? I dunno man.......
You need to have actual teeth to be edgy...
Hey, Epic Mickey at least has cohesion and some followable continuity.
@@Duskool And the overall franchise was a *Disney Game* franchise through and through.
Epic Mickey is one of my favourite platformers of all time. Like, obviously it wasn't a great platformer, but it was so dark and depressing that as an angsty teenager I loved it so much!
I've never played it before, but I can definitely see why people like it after watching this.
@@IamaPERSON yeah. It's just so odd. My sister who was 3/4 at the time used to get so scared watching my play it haha
Here's hoping that the remaster fixes just a little more than the graphics
it fs does its already been out but in a few leaks there will now be outfits and a new move set for mickey
@ationalwangjangler9642. Take the leaks with a grain of salt, of course; That being said, those do sound like something Purple Lamp would come up with, and the second game already provides a decent template for costumes based on various cartoons from throughout the decades. (Though there's other things that have to be fixed or added; For example, revamping progression.)
Edit: Nothing on a sprint option, but the first two are confirmed and they both look awesome to pull off. (Though it's unclear if the dash attack is only a ground option or if it can also be used in the air; The latter would naturally give it more versatility in gameplay.)
this is so outdated here a remake coming soon like next week!
I hail from the future (or the Switch version of it anyway) and the best part about it is that the camera is finally fixed 😤
-Shadow blot got some new attacks
-Spin dash now gives a tiny bit of height and double jump spins are much more used in the game's platforming.
(Also, it opens up projectors that you missed, so if you had the decision to take one projector instead of the other, both will be available in the cinema, meaning that you can get all 72 reels in one run.)
-Paintable objects have a white dotted outline around them to make them easier to see.
-MUCH better camera
-The game has rebindable controls
-Gamma can be changed at any time, allowing you change the darkness of the game, if you want the original atmosphere, keep it low, if not, keep it unchanged.
-New UI for almost everything was added
-Gyro controls can be configured at any time.
-Unsure on this, but the E-ticket capacity was changed, because I never got any upgrades for it but at the end of my run I had 6000 and the cap is normally 1000.
-Animatonic character parts are no longer in purple chests and can be directly picked up from where the chest would be instead. (Really no clue why this added)
-Re-collecting collectables will give you E-tickets for compensation
-White E-tickets are removed and replaced with the greens tickets.
-Blue tickets worth 30 tickets can be found
-Green tickets are now worth 15 tickets.
-Golden tickets are redesigned and no longer have oswalds head on them, now replaced by mickeys (Ironic)
-Gaurdians now have a meter, and pressing up on the D-Pad will send a white gaurdian that shows you where to go.
-Changes in enemy AI and red/green blotlings.
-You can pay 10 E-tickets to gus to skip the projectors that lead to the other main hub worlds. (Ostown, Bog Easy, Ventureland), this makes getting around the 4 much quicker.
BUGS/PROBLEMS
-Frame issues are a thing, especially on Nintendo Switch, where breaking too many things at once or have too many particles can slow the game down considerably.
-Bog easy music for some reason plays the mansion theme
-Male goats for some reason aren't in the game, this might be because the devolopers used the wiki for checking things and the wiki accidentally forgot that they were a thing and ended up replacing them with male cows/dogs.
I literally just watched this video 2 days ago and today a remake is accounced. This is crazy

Nice to see so many people returning to this video!
The fusion could be called "Blotleg Pete"
Still absolutely adore Epic Mickey 1. I don’t wanna remember the other two. Underrated classic.
Power of illusion wasn't bad, but it had some annoying enemies and tedious fetch quests in it... plus, the game ends before it gets good! Only 3 bosses man!

Who, for me, made the very best action-stealth game of all time (Deus Ex), even to this day. I felt sad when it did not fully execute on its premist and what it actually could - no - should have been.

Just gotta add my piece anytime this comes up
Warren’s concept art he made he said in an interview he said he was pushing it as hard as he possibly could for the concept to a point he knew they would be rejected and then they could go from there and tone it down a bit
Unfortunately we were never supposed to see these early ones from what he says so that’s that.
LESS THAN A DAY? ITS TAKEN ME SEVERAL MONTHS!
it's very short if you just ignore all the side missions and went straight to the main story route, doing everything ( especially the hero or paint route ) will probably takes a week or 8 hour or so if you're fast.
I loved Epic Mickey 2. We had it on my family Xbox 360, and one day me and one of my best friends came over to my house to play the game. We beat the whole game together after a few days, and that game just makes me so happy.

Well then.
Whos gonna tell em
I remember playing this when I was a toddler and I couldn't get past the first level because I was so scared of seeing a plunger trying to rip out Mickey's heart
