Some other groups, off the top of my head, that had that same sound: Hall & Oats, Doobie Brothers (Micheal McDonald), Ambrosia, Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, KC and the Sunshine Band, Average White Band and a few years later, Tina Marie, Marc Cohn and others.

      We'll...he does, kind of. I mean whites have their talents and blacks have theirs. I've watched Bobby Caldwell sing this song in other videos when he's older and he sounds white. I think when he recovered the song, he practiced it sounding black but the black voice couldn't last forever...so now he sounds like a white guy singing the song. It's not about black and white but black people know their voices as do white people.

      @DJ L33 I agree. It's funny cause in Jamaica where I'm from there are many races and we mostly all talk and sound the same because so a Chinese or White Jamaican artist sounds like what we would consider a typical Jamaican artist (i.e. Black). Now with Bobby Caldwell his sound is not typical of a white American artist because Black and White people in the US generally had such distinct music genres, speak different and just sound different when they sing. I think Bobby Caldwell's style and sound were very intentionally reflecting the African American sound. Hence the shock factor. There's nothing wrong with that but let's not pretend he doesn't sound like a Black man.

    Yes I always thought he was black, until just now when I saw the video. But I think the main reason that I assumed he was black was because of the musical arrangement. It totally sounds like something that Earth, Wind and Fire would've done. Heck, at some point in the past, I might've thought that it WAS Earth, Wind and Fire.

    I am a child of the sixties and seventies. I have also been a musician for over 30 years. I have lived through the rise of American rock and roll, the British invasion, the Motown sound, American folk singers. As a performer I have played thousands of classical and jazz standards, and music from the Great American Songbook. I have seen disco come and go. I witnessed the birth of punk rock, new wave, rap and hip hop, 80's hair bands, heavy metal music, grunge rock, boy bands and girl groups, the country music explosion, techno music and the music we listen to today. With all that being said Bobby Caldwell is by far my favorite Male vocal of all time and you can see I have a huge list that I can choose from. He may not have the hits like some of my other favorites but he sure can sing. I have had the privilege to see him perform live twice. Great Voice.

Other subscribers can possibly give you a consensus. I didn't mention Maneater, though it's one of their biggest hits, simply because it's so obviously contrived and formulaic, like the record company had them write it just for a radio hit. Daryl Hall is one of the greats for sure. You'll wind up downloading their entire catalogue and adding it to your collection. They are still the #1 duo as far as hits and sales of all time. They'll probably never be passed.

      Charles B. Bobby Caldwell is the only “Blue Eyed Soul” performer to precisely and unpretentiously nail that sweet, funky, soul, thang like a real Black Soul Sanger! The entirety of that recording is on point. Arrangement, Groove, and that sweet sweet funky thang. He made Black music, in a way that had sincerity, integrity and true respect, reverence, and understanding of Black music and the style of the 70’s. 🤘🏾

    • @wolf762x51
      @wolf762x51 5 лет назад

      @@madmonkmedicine , I don't disagree, and I love the track as he performed it. It's really good on vinyl and high quality sound systems, but I find Go West's production to be a bit better. It's little things, but for me GW is a better track. I also think that while 70s studio production methods were very good, when the 80s rolled around, especially mid 80s, you had more dynamic range available to play with. You could get more punchy bass tones , bass drums, low Hrz synths, and had more head room for high to expand without distortion or having to artificially cancel noise. You had better microphone tech for recording. I think that if Caldwell had cut that same track in the same period that GW did, it would be as good or better. There was just so much more available to sound board engineers and producers, not just in equipment, but in techniques. Little things like mic placement, things learned by experimentation along the way. Finally, each person's ear is tuned differently, and not everyone gets the same vibe. So, I'm not saying one is right and one is wrong, just that my personal opinion is that the GW version is better, at least to my ears. The main thing is both are fantastic and we can enjoy them both, and GW thought enough of the track to cover it.

    See the setup for the video with the bench and him sitting there in shadow? They did the same thing for the cover of his debut album. They wanted people to buy his album for the music first, because they understood that people would have been weirded out at the time by seeing a white guy on the cover.
    Black listeners didn't know Bobby was white when he released this album and didn't know he was white when they went to see him perform for the first time. They basically had your reaction when he went out on stage, but immediately approved, because, well, just listen to him!
