According to the Smithsonian, the first campers were homemade starting around 1901, and from the descriptions were essentially what we call tear drop campers or tent on trailer campers like we still use today, along with some Conestoga type wagons modified to be towed behind a car. The first commercial campers began rolling off assembly lines in 1910 and the first motorized RV, ironically made by Rolls Royce debuted the same year.
Yes sir! Awesome information. If you have a chance to visit the National RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana sometime, you can see all versions of what you're describing on display there. It is also thought that the very first ones were likely homemade. Obviously, we needed to prototype before mass production. Great feedback. Thanks for watching!
I realize it is kinda randomly asking but does anybody know a good website to stream new tv shows online ?
@Derrick Arthur flixportal
@Rudy Junior Thanks, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it !
@Derrick Arthur no problem xD
Excellent video, Mark. I like the way you explain things, with a wee bit o’ humor.
Glad you enjoyed it David. Thanks for watching and for enduring my humor! ha ha
Teardrop's are for people who love car/tent camping but want the convinces of an RV. I think your analogy of teardrop is like Bedroom with outdoor nature is your living room is best I've heard yet.
That's what I love about it the most. It opens up the living room.
Watched the "Best custom tear drop trailer" video that you were featured in... I RARELY subscribe to channels.... I was so impressed I immediately subscribed upon watching that video. You have a gift my friend...OMG you have truly found your calling. I have a Super C, and was looking for something to tow behind for friends that just can't sleep with pet dander in the area (we have 2 dogs and a cat) ...so I figured I would look around at teardrops as a "Pet Free" bed option for guests outside of our living area. Wow... looking forward to watching more of your videos!!!
HI Rourri! Thanks for subscribing and for your kind words. A teardrop is a great place to be free from pet dander (unless you put a pet in there! ha ha). Thanks for watching - Mark
Hi Mark, I'm currently building a tear drop to pull behind my Toyota Prius. My daughter Calista told me about your youtube channel and web site. Been enjoying checking them out.
That's awesome. Thanks for checking out the videos. I've always wanted to try pulling a teardrop with a Prius.
I like tear drops because they are tiny homes that fit in my garage ready to go at a moments notice.
Plus I no longer like sleeping on the ground.
TRUTH!!! Thanks for adding your feedback.
Great video. How do you keep clean in a teardrop as they don’t have a shower ?
Great question. Thanks for following. A mobile shower shelter is often a favorite addition, camping in campgrounds that have showers is also an option. We usually camp in the backcountry, so we'll usually find a lake to bathe in.
Overland Trailer Thanks
Besides a trailer, what do I need to start my build? I will be doing it in my schools construction shop.
Hi Latoya! You'll need some plywood, metal RV edge trim, latches, a hurricane hinge, and some doors (if you don't plan on building them yourself). We can help you get what you need from a variety of sources. support@overlandtrailer.com
I do love a good teardrop. They are so easy to tow, too. Your trailer is adorable.
Hi Soles! Teardrops are great. Thanks for checking our adorable trailer out.
You have me sold. Also, I live a half hour away from Ocean Shores. Is the tear drop trailer event an opportunity for a would be diy'er? Thanks and great video.
Hi Richard!
Thanks for checking out the video and I'm glad you've found it enlightening. YES, that Ocean Shores event is for teardroppers of all kinds. I think there is a Facebook group for it where all of the plans are made. Cheers!
What a great channel!? You've got some great stuff here. I've subbed and I can't wait to watch more of your videos! Thanks for the great content. Keep it up!
Thanks man! Love yours too.
Nice video, wish you success and be healthy always..
You too and Thanks for watching!
Are you going to go the the June 2020 NW Overland Rally in Plain, WA.?
Probably not. I have to pick and choose what I can do right now. Too much going on! I also sold my last personal teardrop trailer. I'm working on another offroad version that I might have done by then but mostly the business comes first. Summer is prime time for our rentals and trailer sales.
#15 They are relatively affordable 🙂 Great podcast for us teardroppers and all future teardroppers.
True! Thanks sticks. Glad you're liking the Podcast. The Teardrop is a great way to camp!
I would say the tear drop camper goes back to the old west when the chuck wagon was built to support cowboys ,a rolling kitchen with sleeping quarters for the chef ....so, around 1850's
Yep. Chuck wagons. The American Road system also helped. We have another video about this here: ruclips.net/video/IoYO_DGpfbo/видео.html
@@OverlandTrailer the great American road , yep, Not route 66 , but the Lincoln highway
Do you need trailer brakes ? and is it that muc of an improvement over a tent that its worthwhile if you only use it 3-4 times a year ?
Hi Lawrence! Trailer brakes are not required for trailers under 2k lbs in the US and Canada. Most teardrop trailers come in under 1,000 lbs.
As far as an improvement over a tent, it is a big improvement in comfort, teardown and setup tasks and more. You'd probably need to decide if it's something you'd want. I always advise people rent one on RVShare or Outdoorsy before purchasing. Cheers! - Mark
@@OverlandTrailer Thanks very much
How to you camp with the kids in a Tear Drop. I've alway wanted to build one for about 8 years but five years ago my son was born. Perhaps we might need to re-think this but I usually one see couples without kids in tear drops. I would love to hear how you do it with your kids.
There are many ways. Our first TD was 5' wide 4' tall and 10' long. I made it that long so we could have a bunk bed at the front of the trailer for our kids when they were little. Over the past 12 years, we've had several customers who wanted a bunk in our production 8' model. I designed a hidden bunk that slides out from the cabinet in the cabin area that holds one child. My business partner, now that his kids are larger, uses a rooftop tent on the tow vehicle or the teardrop. Of course, a side tent or SUV tent attached to the side also works. A rooftop tent and a teardrop can sleep 4 adults no problem.
Loved the video... Thank you
Great! Thanks for watching.
Is it possible to buy your trailers in the UK ?
It would be great if we did. Maybe someday. There are a number of builders in the UK who have built clones of our trailers. If you want to build one, we're always happy to help you along the journey!
New teardropper here. Hope you have more videos😊
Yes! Working on a new season of shows.
I liked your vibe, so I subscribed! 😁
Nice!!! Thanks for subbing and hanging out!
@@OverlandTrailer you're welcome!:-)
I'm just going to play that 0:03 part over and over again man. :)
This stuff just comes out of me. It's taken me a long time to just embrace it. ha ha
I have to sub you cause I love building teardrop campers and am currently working on my fourth one this year, got a few how to videos. This is a cool video to share
Thanks man. Would love to see what you're working on!
Yes, Yes, Yes, I agree 100%
Thanks for checking in! Do you camp in a home built?
In the past I have , this time around I went with a T@G. I was tired of fighting water, bugs, and decay. @@OverlandTrailer
@@CustomFitz1 Ha ha! Good choice.
Very Nice Thank You =Cosmo
Thanks for the feedback. Looks like you're also a TD camper! Going to check your stuff out!😀
@@OverlandTrailer Recently we had a conversation about wall insulation. Turns out Cosmo has a Vistabule which has a similar approach to insulation as you and - here's the good part - he has a you tube video where he is camping in single digits with no real problems of condensation which was my main concern. Cool!
Getting my "pup tent on wheels" allows me to extend my off road trips from 5 days to a couple of weeks.
That's Right! Perfect for Bugging out!
My goal is to put one behind my 1931 Ford coupe
A Classic Combo! Love it
Thank you
Thanks for hanging out!
I’m thinking about getting a tear drop for my wife and I to sleep in and the kids can sleep in the suv.
A great solution. My business partner does a very similar setup with a teardrop trailer and the kids get a rooftop tent on the Jeep. Works great!
Are you related to John Iadaroda from TYT's ? you look and sound like him
Brother from another mother
Henry Ford used to Camp with his Rich buddies in his Model A check it out
I know. Awesome footage of it exists at the library of congress. It made it into our feature documentary that Amazon published a few years ago. They camped with servants...Is that even camping?!
Ford was annoyed at the amount of wood scrap that he had to pay to dispose of. He tasked his engineers to come up with a solution. They ground the wood up, carbonized it and compressed it into briquettes. He would give buyers of his car a bag of briquettes and encouraged them to take their car into woods and camp.
Kingsford was Ford's brother in law.
Good podcast i agree with #8
Thanks! Are you an owner or builder that would like to add to our list?
Overland Trailer I’m a owner.
This was an awesome video, my channel is mostly about hunting and fishing but camping is going to be a lot more prevalent this year.
My wife wants to go small and I am all about wanting to be able to get into more remote areas. Subbed to show my support and appreciation.
Have a great 2019, we will follow along.
Thanks Buck Tales. It is a good way to get out to those remote places for hunting and fishing. Cheers!
Don't get a false sense of security just because your tear drop is hard sided. A bear can get in in less than a minute.
www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f51/lions-and-tigers-and-bears-oh-my-67026.html
Oh of course Gloria! Good point. But they are still safer than a tent. That was the point I meant to make.
Why a tear drop camper ? because being mauled by a bear isn't an option ..screw tents LOL
At least it slows the bears down.
