We camped in the Smokies, when my daughters were small. I would put up a big tarp, 18 X 30, diagonal corners up, centered on a picnic table. I’d back the truck under one end. Then put our tent under the other end, easy peasy. We were just a walk to a nice toilet. I brought gallons of water in the truck. I’d put plenty of firewood in the truck. Rainy days were almost as much fun as sunny days. I had three girls, only. They always had friends. The wife did great with girl dressing, hygiene. She and I shared cast iron cooking. I was in charge of put up and take down, always with good help from the girls. We had wonderful times, hikes, wading creeks, fishing, biology walks, fires and cooking yummy stuff. We learned to deal with woodsy critters, bugs, skunks, raccoons, bear, dear, and hogs. Now they take their kids outside...away from at home, TVs, phones, computers. They have more great times...making wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing and showing. I like the little teardrop camper. The smaller it is, the less trouble and work it is, the more camping will be done. It keeps camping a restful time, less a chore.
Our must have camping items....a nice double wide hammock and a free standing 3 Legg L.L. Bean shelter. Both take up little room and the shelter can be moved easily around the campsite as needed (over the table or hammock or move it away for nice weather). My family always camped as I was growing up and I have the best camping memories! Thanks Mom and Dad!🙂 It's not camping if it's not raining. lol
Good options, I use some of the Eureka tents myself never had any issues with them after soaking them with 3M waterproofing. You are correct you can get out camping with a minimal amount of cost involved. Ledge makes some really good sleeping bags for a really great price. I also bought a couple of those small burner units and they have worked just as well as my MSR pocket rocket.
Hi Cosmo, Thanks for sharing your ideas on camping here. It's always fun when I'm not camping to see how others tackle common issues. With respect to rain, I am a big proponent of tarps over other shelter types for several reasons. First, they are much much lighter and smaller to pack. I have 3 different Kelty tarps (12, 16 and 20 foot) and comparing the 20 foot tarp to a 20 foot pop up shelter is illustrative. The scaffolding for the 20 foot pop up and the shelter itself weigh around 100 pounds and take up tremendous space in the tow vehicle. My 20 foot tarp weighs about 4-5 pounds and packs down to about the side of a medium size pillow. Deploying between 2 trees and using tarp poles for the other diagonals is my most common way to set it up. However you can easily set it up with 4 poles as well if you don't have trees to use. Although I went through Eagle as a scout and know my share of knots, I have grown to love the easy of use of Figure 9 line tensioners. These just really take the hassle factor out of deploying and keeping tight these lines. Another time/hassle saving technique is to use large lag screws (3/4" x 12") and a cordless drill or impact driver. These hold much better than your typical tent stakes. I like to have the teardrop under the tarp so that I can get in and out in the rain and not get wet. Also I can open up the roof vent completely during a rain shower and keep things ventilated. Having 400 square feet of protected dry space is quite a luxury while camping.
Thanks Ben. I own every Noah tarp and many MSR wings.. I love them and use them often. The rigid free standing shelters have the advantage of a smaller footprint with no guy ropes in cal weather. While camping on the beach in October it was far too windy for a rigid structure but the MSR Wing did fine in 47MPH winds. But the guy ropes take up a lot of space in confined campsites. Either way I love them both and use them all the time. I have a number of different steaks and for firm dirt the MSR spiral steak is the best I have found (not sure or the actual name) but it really holds well. I also carry larger steaks for sand etc. I carry about 20 extra steaks above what I need - just in case I need to double up on steaks in heavy wind. I find the MSR Rondevus a better choice over Noahs tarp . It has more usable space for me. But I still use Noahs too Nice to have so many good choices. Tent vs trailer is VERY different. Try packing up your camp after an all night rain with a tent vs a trailer. I have done both and let me tell you that living in a trailer is so much better. The tent is wet and muddy upon foldup and you will be muddy and dirty as well when all is done (not to mention an often two hour teardown). The trailer is a breeze when leaving or setting up. Throw up your table, chairs, and poddy tent and you are ready to go (15 minute teardown). Not to mention that with a trailer you can have easily accessible luxuries that are high and dry like a TV, computer, AC, refrigerator, and wifi hotspot in the right location (all difficult to pull off in a tent). I have done both and trailer is the way to go. I didn't want to spend a lot so I went with a 6 X 8 Runaway trailer. Don't believe the naysayers that say a tent is a equal substitute---it isn't and it also isn't as safe (from bears and such). I bought a trailer because of the nightmare scenarios I experienced in "good" tents (including seeing a bear near my tent).
I still use tents and of course the trailer for different types of trips, I agree with you. Thank You SUBSCRIBE and see my other videos at ruclips.net/user/CosmoWeems
As a woman viewer I would like to see how you shut down your trailer in the fall and winterize it. I would like to see if it something I can do by myself. Also in the spring how you prepare for the season. Another great video with great information thanks Cosmo! Love that you taped during the rain.
Good suggestion. I will work on it. I do have this video about how to lube the bearings which is pretty easy but important. Most recommendations are every 10,000 miles. ruclips.net/video/uIiaXLLXVNc/видео.html
I've been watching for awhile and your Vistabule is amazing. You're the kind of guy who does well regardless because you know how to live. It's the little things that make simple adventures rich. Cheers.
How do you keep your fridge charged up mine will run on the battery but not for long.is their another way I tried solar painlessly but if it gets cloudy it doesn’t charge well.my only last thing to try is to buy a Generator.
Trailer has a 9 gallon water tank. No sediment build up. I would think you would have to camp in one spot for an extended period (months) that has heavy minerals for that to happen. =Cosmo Thank You Check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmoweemsvideos SUBSCRIBE ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems
Door Windows have bug screens. I think you are referring to the curtains.. I made a paper template of the window and had a tailor make me curtains. The curtains have velcro sewn on the top and I applied stick on velcro to the trailer. I also used velcro strips to hold the curtain when I roll it up. HOWEVER Vistabule sells curtains now but I dont know how they attach. SUBSCRIBE and see my other videos at ruclips.net/user/CosmoWeems
Female right here, and also a new subscriber! I LOVE your channel. I have recently become more interested in camping and teardrop trailers, and your videos have been so helpful. I LOVE nature and hiking, and want to do much more of it. Regarding your question about what more women may want to know (and I also know that there are many women who may already be aware of the answers to questions like this, but these are just some ideas of things I have wondered about that other women may want to see a video of: 1) Tips for planning for possible breakdowns, flat tires and the best way to resolve or prevent breakdowns (such as certain safety products or attachments for trailers, AAA memberships, etc.) 2) Bathrooms! Ha. Such as any tips for portapotties or bucket toilets, solar camping showers, etc.) 3) Safety tips for women traveling alone. I believe actual incidents are rare, but maybe some tips for peace of mind would be helpful - such as what to bring (bear mace, proper lighting, awareness of surroundings, etc.) I watched a video a while back of a woman who camped at a more remote and free, private campground, and she had an alarming experience there that could have been worse but she left the area quickly enough. I believe incidents like this are rare, but I think it is helpful for anyone traveling alone and in remote places to have some safety tips to keep in mind. Just some ideas! Thanks again for your great content! ❤️
Cosmo Weems Thanks Cosmo! I will check those out. I just subscribed to your channel so I have some catching up to do. Ha. Thank you for what you do! 🙌🏻💕
Hi Cosmo! I’m a female and I’m in the planning stage of my “exit strategy” for the life less workforce ;D. Your videos are a big part of my building enthusiasm to escape .. and when I do, I’m hitting the road like you do (long long getaways). One of my worries is that I am not going to be very good at breakdowns, and often I see you going down roads that amaze me in your setup. I would love to here more from you about that (how constraining is that attitude, how much do you encounter non-usable roads in your trip planning, and what have you done to prepare for such issues? I have to say that the Vistabule seems to take a lickin and keep on tickin for you!
Congratulations on getting close to the fun phase of your life!. I believe there are clubs like AAA and Good Sam that can help with breakdowns. Best not to exceed your capability and use common sense. I just like to get to he remote areas. Plenty of fun to be had in accessible nice areas too. Next week I am going to one of those. Some people prefer to travel with others and join social RV clubs like Escapers www.escapees.com/ =Cosmo Check out Bob Wells too. Plenty of good information there to keep you motivated ruclips.net/channel/UCAj7O3LCDbkIR54hAn6Zz7Avideos?disable_polymer=1 He also has a forum with loads of tips too - just don't stop watching me Ha ha ha ha ha =Cosmo
Are you familiar with truck tents which fit over the bed of the truck? Had one and loved it. More room than a smaller tent and you have the advantage of sleeping off the ground. I put a tent and a small table in mine and carried a small 2 burner heater to cook on Found that it suited my purpose well Of course you need a truck but if you have one already a good truck tent can be had for less than 200 dollars

Great video. I don't camp with the rugs because of damp/water soaked issues. I have a teardrop trailer,.....I down sized from a big, heavy toy hauler. Love my Camp-Inn trailer!
Thanks 550 and 560 were at the top of my possible trailers list. In case you are unaware these are woven polyethele carpets that do not soak up water and pass water thru them. If they are damp I put them in a plastic trash bag while I travel. ruclips.net/video/mIP-rUbJPR4/видео.html I have other videos about these carpets too. Mr. Weems, I would like to suggest you apply RainEx to your camper window. I use RainEx for my car and when it rains and I'm driving, even with on coming trucks, I don't have to use my wipers. The water just beads up and rolls off the glass.
Condensation is a problem in all trailers and RVs. This one is great. It has a roof vent 4 windows that open and ventilation ports on the front. Its very well ventilated. I also installed a heat exchange heater that emits dry heat. See my videos about heat. I speak about condensation in them and other videos. Thank You for watching. there was some pretty good to know info...a lot I already have known, but things like that thing on the underside of the tent was something new. My dad used to put tarps under the tent but he probably didn't know about having it smaller then the bottom of the tent.
In South Africa we use large sheets of shading net instead of carpets as a floor covering. It needs to be folded several times to be the required thickness but all dirt, sand and water that lands on it simply pass through. It also has the benefit that if you are at a camping spot for several days the grass won't easily yellow underneath the net since light filters through. For those demanding a toilet there are specific toilet/shower tents that can accommodate a portable toilet. There are also portable and solar based showers that can be used to provide all the creature comforts you are scared of missing.
Greetings from 24 miles west of New York City. Nice thank you! I like the idea they camp does not harm the plants. Same with the carpets I am using! Thanks Barbara that would save more water and I am interested. I have searched for one that fit the faucet but so far no luck. I may try an ironing sprinkler like Mom had and see if I can squeeze it onto the hose thingy I put on the faucet. Suggestions are welcome. =Cos
see the turquoise one - I think it might fit. And it is a whole 1.24 Cdn. And you could use plumber's silicon tape to wrap the tap if neccessary to make it fit.
Hey Cosmo! Have you checked out the Coleman solar bag shower?? It has a red plastic nozzle on the end of the hose coming off of it that looks like it would fit perfectly on your "faucet snood". Everytime I see mine laying unused in the garage I think of you and wonder if it would work for what you want on your faucet. They sell these things everywhere, I'm sure Wal-Mart sells them. Check it out and see if it will work for you. Thanks for the great videos!!

Each species sounds different. But I love them all especially a cold wind blowing on the pines. You are making me want to go camping! .
Hey Cosmo. Another great video mate.! I feel like I was camping with you. You put off a relaxing vibe of camping, I can feel. I started tent camping in 1964 with my sibs + parents in N.Y. Many trips to Montauk. Then many to upstate N.Y. with friends. Used a one man-two women tent.! ( better than a 3 man tent.) I bought a chevy van and it was dry, warm and comfy. Your vids are bringing many little detail memories to me Cosmo. Memoring little camping details of my father. A great vid Cosmo, I'll see them all.! Really good narration.! Thanks
Love your videos Cosmo! We are looking into getting a Vistabule and your videos have been really helpful. I'm wondering what you do when getting in/out of the Vistabule when there is heavy rain without getting things wet inside. Do you have a canopy or awning you use by the door?
Hi Luke. I just dash in and out. I dont leave the door open for more than a second or two in heavy rain. I have been in some awful weather year round. Getting the interior wet has not been a problem for me. Its dry. I do use a canopy over the rear hatch but not the side doors. Every trailer is a compromise. @@CosmoWeems Thanks for the quick reply - that is helpful. Do you happen to know the actual weight of your Vistabule when its loaded? How's it been towing with the Outback? That's also what we have.
I weighed it at a truck stop. The trailer fully loaded as shown in my videos including water is 1500 pounds. I believe the new trailers are lighter and dont have the extra weight of the tongue box I have on mine. Outback 4 cylinder tows well. Towing is not sport driving.
Cosmo; How long is your teardrop? I am a DIY, have plans for building a 1947 teardrop. I'll see how it goes. I 'm interested in your cooler, and your soller charging system for my DIY teardrop. I really enjoy your adventures. You get way back in the sticks.

Notice the wheel lock on your trailer. Have you had a trailer stolen ? Or has it become an essential necessity ? Great video by the way , first time viewer , and now new subscriber . Thanks
The locks are to keep honest people honest. No thefts yet. You can not prevent a theft. But you can reduce the chances with a lock. It is wise to have insurance (which I have). First video of yours that I have watched. I enjoy my teardrop but still have my popup tents and I usually carry a 3m by 3m gazebo. Fortunately we don't get too much rain in fact I think I have had less than 5 wet days in the last couple of years. My only complaint about my teardrop is that towing anything sometimes restricts where you can stop purely because of your length whereas with a tent you are just a vehicle (I have a dual cab ute). The great thing about a teardrop is that as soon as you park it is habitable set up and packing up takes minutes.
Hello Thanks for your comments. I checked your teardrop change video. Very nice trailer and great job customizing it to your needs. You may enjoy my boondocking videos where I take the trailer into dense forest - something I could not do with a larger rig. I started off looking at popup campers and then discovered teardrops and researched them for a year before buying. Of course there is no "best choice" rather just what meets our individual needs best. I have to say my teardrop is my best toy and its facilitating lots of fun experiences! =Cosmo SUBSCRIBE ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems and check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems

Hi Cosmo. My husband is watching your video on the big tv and I am on the computer. The modern family. I have always wanted a Vistabule and he wanted a Campinn. When we used to do stained glass I cut all the curved pieces and he cut all the straight pieces. We both love your videos. You were saying you have a lack of women commenting on your videos and that women are buying teardrops and traveling alone all over the place. Well the reason we are not commenting is that we are traveling all over the place alone. I am one of those women. My husband wanted a Campinn for years so we bought a used one for his birthday three years ago. He is a gadget guy and loves to get tips and ideas from you. We have a lot of the same gear you do because we watch you in the winter and re-evaluate our camping gear to be more efficient. We are still working on that. I love my cast iron and to be warm and dry which is not easy here in the Great Northwet. I also am known for feeding lots of people when we go to teardrop gatherings even when I leave hubby at home or at work. Cooking for crowds takes equipment. Good thing I have a truck.
Thank you so much. Its fun to share and I learn lots from the viewers comments. Camp-inn 550 and 560 were high on my list but the Vistabule won me over. Happy to hear you are not fearful of traveling alone. Its now or never for a geezer like me. Adventure before dementia. Ha ha ha., =Cosmo
I had 4 kids and it wasn't easy finding things I could afford. I had a friend introduce me to camping on the cheap. Bought an army tent at a surplus store already had a coupld lawn chairs. Packed up that old car and off we went, what a blast the kids always had fishing, swimming and hiking. Now I'm a lot older so tent camping doesn't work so I had a topper made for my mid sized truck throw a bed in the back put storage bins under the bed and so I can still go camping. Luggable Loo works great with a plastic bag and kitty litter works great if there are no restrooms around. Margart you can find second hand things to get you started and work your way up a little at a time Cosmo has given you some great advice. Get those kids out of the house and into nature you will all love it!
Ya I was out this past weekend. Not much thunder but lots-O-rain, But the Walpak in took good care of me before I returned to camp! Trailer did spoil me I only use a tent for backpacking these days. So cozy in the trailer. Everything is better in the trailer! =Cosmo
I have a suggestion for you next video. I'm guessing that a lot of your subscribers are folks who are considering buying a Vistabule. I think it would be great if you were to create a video about the various options that they offer and how you would choose those options knowing what you know today, if you could do it all over. Trailers are nice! BUT, there are maintenance issues that can usually occur when traveling to or coming back from said camping trips ie.(flat tires). Tents have there own issues with poor ventilation or making a poor choice when it comes to buying a quality one. Making sure you have enough space to be cooped up for maybe up to 5 days if rains persist that long. Wind. Just get the gear that will last for many years. People have lost their lives trying to save a buck. Get quality! That doesn't mean walmart unless you use that stuff in your own backyard.
I agree all systems can fail. Different gear for different types of trips is my plan. My goal is to enjoy nature and whatever weather nature shares with me. Check my other videos ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems SUBSCRIBE ruclips.net/user/cosmoweems?sub_confirmation=1

A tent is ok, for the young ones. I know some people that started camping in a tent and did not like it, and gave it all up. I personnaly think its a shame, and someone should put all the chances on his side so that the first experience will be a good one. 3 in a tent, maybe, but kids and teenager need some space and confort. So, I would check out a small popup tent traileur ,less than 1500 lbs, most cars would tow such a rig, and if bought used, less than 2000$ is possible. Just do your homework before buying. Good luck
Thank You. Margret is reading the replies. Not sure on what her situation is for trailer storage and maintenance. Hard to beat a tent cost wise. SUBSCRIBE and see my other videos at ruclips.net/user/CosmoWeems
You could get a better tent than that. Fine for one person, who wanted to rough it, but most people don't want to rough it. And anyone but a nut job would opt for a trailer. There are places where you can rent small trailers also.
I did this for people who can not afford a trailer. I get comments from people about that. I really just wanted to shoe them they can enjoy nature too. =Cosmo
Re your second complaint, simple solution- put more women in your vids. You had Mom and daughters on the trip, why not use them? Let the viewers see them using your gear, trailer & tent, let us watch then interacting w/ the camp set-up, and hear their thoughts and opinions on what works for them, and what doesn't, what they find useful, and what makes for a pleasurable and comfortable experience for them. Guarantee, as females, they are going to see things that you and I, being men, might miss, or think is unimportant. Plus, the girls, as kids, may well have insights about kid-camping, that you and I as adults, might, again, miss. If they're experienced campers, there will be value in their input; but, even if they're neophytes, there will still be value. Lastly, pose Mom & daughters, say, in front of your trailer for the thumbnail. Again, guarantee, if a woman sees a woman in the thumbnail, she will be likelier to click on it. Me, I thought that this vid was nice, but there wasn't much in it for me. (That's a personal call, and NOT a general criticism.) I am just now beginning the teardrop trailer experience, but I have decades of tent camping under my belt (along with the spare tire, as my wife has pointed out). Your approach and aesthetic to gear is interesting, but, to me, is overkill, and too high-end. My approach is much more frugal and basic (clean the grease from your plates using cold water? Throw the Chinette plates into the campfire, while singing, "Time to do the dishes!"! My mother-in-law was horrified by that one, which was nice.) I have LOTS of gear already, and I'm not going to stop using it. My thirty year-old Coleman white-gas stoves still work just fine. I'm going with a base TCTeardrop, out of Wausau, WI- a third the price of your (excellent) Vistabule. It would be rank folly on my part to get a trailer that is worth half-again as much as my truck. Not as elegant, or as well-appointed as yours, but, just as rugged, which is the main thing in the boondocks, or over the road. The videos of yours that I learn the most from are those of you actually at work, on the road, and in the bush. I have viewed your U.P. video several times already, and will view it again. Thank you for making it, thank you for sharing your knowledge, & happy trails to you!
Thanks Nick I value the feedback. I announced in the beginning they communicated with me with me . They were not on the trip. I did the setup for them to see and learn. I do take women on some trips but so far she has refused to be on camera. I had hoped my videos were generic enough to provide values to anyone interested in RV camping. I love teardrops in general and am not just a Vistabule guy. I have recommended Hiker Trailer and Runaway to people who are looking for other options some as low as $2K. Vistabule is not the only way to have fun. Its my way! Regards =Como
Aha, understand now- my helpful suggestions aren't, so far, all that helpful. Oh, well. 2 quick thoughts- NOT dissing your Vistabule- just because I don't want one doesn't mean I'm not drooling a bit over yours. Also, check out the TCTeardrops, and consider adding them to your list of recommends. Again, thanks.
Ya have seen the TCT on the road. I think in one pf my videos I showed the outside (it was locked) Many many good choices in teardrops. I spotted about 12 various brands on my circumnavigation of Lake Superior. They are popular again! Thanks for taking the time to comment - always welcome feedback. =Cosmo

I love your enthusiasm for the outdoors and just "being".
Thanks Mom and Dad!🙂
It's not camping if it's not raining.

How much water does the trailer carry itself. I see the faucet and wonder if you have sediment or lime build up in the tanks.
Can you share info about the door window coverings. I'm going to need ideas soon? thanks
And I just realized that this video is 2 years old, so my comment here is very late. Ha.

I’m reading that teardrop trailers are terrible with condensation? How do you combat this? How do you improve ventilation?
Condensation is a problem in all trailers and RVs. This one is great. It has a roof vent 4 windows that open and ventilation ports on the front. Its very well ventilated. I also installed a heat exchange heater that emits dry heat. See my videos about heat. I speak about condensation in them and other videos. Thank You for watching.
Same with the carpets I am using! you can get a little sprayer unit for the kitchen tap if that would be of interest.

Hey Cosmo! Have you checked out the Coleman solar bag shower?? It has a red plastic nozzle on the end of the hose coming off of it that looks like it would fit perfectly on your "faucet snood". Thanks
Happy to hear. I am still making memories! This area has so much to offer one just has to go enjoy it! Thanks =Cosmo

Nothing like the mutual admiration of the outdoors to spawn perhaps some romance.
Check my other

I get comments from
people about that. I really just wanted to shoe them they can enjoy
nature too.

=Cosmo
