  • We finally jumped in and decided it was time to upgrade our lathe to something that would compliment the Mori Seiki CNC milling machine. I've been lusting after these sorts of lathes for years! I'm beyond thrilled to finally be able to purchase one!
This video shows the first week of training that I got on the lathe while it was still powered up at the showroom at Elliott Matsuura. It's a 6 axis Nakamura AS200LMYS CNC lathe with live tools, a 24 station turret, Y axis, sub spindle, parts catcher, chip conveyor, 300psi high pressure coolant, and tons of other goodies! It's a dream machine. This will allow us to perfectly make all of the round components to our knives and also open up several other product lines that we've been wanting to do for years.

Great video on the Nakamura AS200. I am looking at a quote for the same machine and it was good to watch you go over some of the setups thanks for sharing. I know it's an old video now but I will search your videos for more on this machine and binge watch them all 👍👍

its nice to see you graduate and not stay stuck in tormach fantasy land. its also great to see guys self teach. I've found the industry to not be very good at sharing and teaching. I mean the machine dealers are great but that only helps owners and lead guys. getting that passed down the ranks in a factory happens at a snails pace. sometimes its job security for a lead guy. sometimes its because its more important to the owners to keep the spindles turning than actually explain what's going on and have the low level guys help themselves. self teaching has the advantage of not being held down but the disadvantages of limited exposure to formal learning and solutions of others.

(spoiler: that's not how you remove the chuck, the draw tube should be in the inward position so you have more room to unthread the coupling within the travel of the jaws, once the coupling is completely disengaged you can finish removing the bolts holding it to the spindle nose, you should never let the weight of the chuck hang on the threads of the draw tube, I know this because I have made two brand new draw tubes for two of our lathes from scratch, those threads on the draw tube will rip right off of there with the pressure that the draw tube cylinder can exert, just be careful with the draw tube.)

How can you possibly justify this kind of purchase? That's a $200,000 lathe. We can all do the math on your gross sales and the numbers don't even begin to add up. Must be spending Daddy's money.

Wes Johnson I agree there is no possible way he is making enough money off of his knives to fund this. Unless he took a ridiculous amount of pre orders and is just hoping everyone stays on board while he makes them wait 2 years for knives. He has always seemed a little pretentious and arrogant to me and for no real reason i can see.

This is indeed a very, very beatiful machine you have there!!
I was very impressed on how quite it works, considering how much rpm you possibly need if you are machining such a small diameter in brass. I know a shop which owns the twin-turrent Nakamura, I' always impressed how freaking fast this machine works.
So congrats on your bying and greetings from Germany!
Btw, I can totally understand this "kid in a candy-shop" feeling you got.
One year ago we bought a CTX Beta 800 from DMG and visited DMG in Bielefeld- got the same feeling there :D

fun toys, i've had a mori nl sy, currently running an okuma lb3000 ymw and a couple of swiss lathes and i have a dura also. i will honestly say the fanuc controls are the simplest controls to run out of the bunch. good choice on the royal collet noses, no indicating saves so much time on those. if you have the choice, go to y axis stacked holders as soon as you can. you can get so many more tools on that turret and it will make your setups so much quicker leaving all your common tools in place. i am curious to see how well you get fusion working with it, i just started playing with it and like it so far, and i want to adopt it in my shop.

    Hello John,
Firstly a super great big happy Birthday to you, I honestly thought you were about 27!
I am seriously jealous and the one below your model would just about go through my window to my tiny flat, but I would have to find something to mask the odour of the cutting oil< I am mental and dreaming of course. If only I was younger and very importantly, healthier I would actually buy the ‘Manual! As it is about all I can deal with and afford!’ The machine will have to be a dream unfortunately. I was surprised to find at least one agent for these machines in England UK.
Hope you go from strength to strength so you and (perhaps) Erik can be just doing the packing and post your knives out letting your machines do all the graft!

I can see why you have purchased this machine. Only problem I see is the business decision for this purchase. You make relatively small low cost parts on this machine its going to take longer than the useful life of the machine to justify its cost and pay for it self making those parts.
