I’ve been there for Carnival and it’s very overrated. I preferred the small towns for this vs the big cities.

I went to my first Rio Carnival last week and was shocked!!
I guess it has a lot to do with carnival celebrating freedom. Rio is also one of the most tolerant cities, so many find it better to move here
@SwedishGringo thanks for the reply! Speaking to a few Brazillians in London and a couple of Carioca's last week, they say the best thing for them was/is to leave the country because of poor job opportunities, education and health care.
It's a great country for tourist but if you are from there, not so much it seems. I was sadden at seeing some of the things the locals there were doing to try and make money.
I will return next year but will probably visit Salvador or Forteleza!!!
