I went to Carnival in Salvador and Rio a few years back and I had a blast. I did see a handful of Brazilians getting roughed up pretty bad by the police or other locals. A couple tourists in my group were mugged as well, but they ignored our tour guides constant reminder to leave all important things in the Hotel safe. For me I met lots of beautiful women and had lots of fun... Viva Brazil!

A good trick at Galeao airport is to go up a level when ordering Uber, so you don't get swarmed by taxis. As for the Sim card, just buy a 10 $R chip at any newspaper stand and dial *144, then 3 and then 3 again for english. There, with your passport, an english speaking person will activate your sim for you as a tourist. Cost me about 40 $R total for 3 + 12GB bonus for 15 days.

Damn it, I am staying at a hostel in lapa next weekend 😩. I doubt I can find anything else such short notice. Since it is a hostel I would be going out with a big group though
Big groups are the best shields. Just remember to take an Uber home, even if it’s just a few minutes walk

I'm Brazilian outside BRA all my life. I'm going to Carnaval for 10 days first time, didnt really plan with people and dont have friends in Rio. Is there an actual place you recommend going alone? Or is there no such thing as being alone? A bit apprehensive staying outside the bubble
Go to a hostel and have a drink, and you’ll have friends in no time👍 I recommend Ipanema beach hostel or Selina in Lapa

Is cash needed for drinks and food on the street or is it ok to pay with the phone?
Virtual card in phone has always worked for me. But bring 20 dollars in local cash too just in case (It will get you 4-5 drinks)

The bloco parties are wild in Rio De Janeiro. Swedish Gringo when are you going to film one of the bloco party live? I know you said it's not safe to film live, but there are many Brazilian vloggers that are going live on YT at bloco parties filming for hours, and they have had no problems. You don't show us the stuff that really goes on in those bloco parties until I started watching this new Brazilian YT (Dairios Do Carioca) that's live streaming all the bloco parties raw.Oh my goodness, so much debauchery, I'm in total shock, I didn't know all that stuff went on in the bloco parties until I started watching all of the bloco parties live from Rio on YT vlog Carioca.
Will you be going live soon, and show fans the raw footage of one of the bloco parties? Nobody will bother you, it seemed like everyone is just there to have a good time, They are all laughing, talking, dancing, and lots of group kissing make out sessions. You don't need to worry about theft at the bloco parties, it's furthest thing from these folks mind. They are not causing any problems, they're just there to dance with sexy outfits , group kissing, and just party for hours.

I have been going to Rio since 2003 and it's so different than it was but please stop hyper focusing on the safety. Rio used to be dangerous, I mean very dangerous. These days, you might lose a phone or if you'r'e really unlucky, all your things, but physical safety like getting beat up or worse killed, that's not really a thing. Just treat this like any big city in the world. All the same rules of how you should move apply. Now be smart and go have a good time.
Oh yes, I acctually mention this in several videos: that the main risk is theft and worst case getting drugged. And that when people say dangerous here it refers to losing stuff rather than getting hurt physically

The fact that the Brazilian flag is considered "toxic" during Carnaval tells me all I need to know about the people who attend.
It’s acctually not a carneval thing: things have come to a point where hanging a Brazilian flag on your balcony or window equals that you are a Bolsonaro supporter. The flag should be avoided in all situations except football.
