I would think that if you have a left crosswind on upwind and final, wouldn't you have a right crosswind on the downwind leg? What am I missing? Why did the vector indication not flip to the left side when you flew the opposite way in aerodynamic trim?
As far as I can tell the Apache pretty much always flies crabbed to the left like that. I haven't noticed that to this degree in any other chopper I have simulated. The AH-94 in VTOL VR flies that way as well and I was always trying to awkwardly trim it out. It is annoying but you get used to it. Also if anyone cares to explain exactly why this is the case I would love to hear it as again it seems more extreme than any other heli.
@@AssassinACS Weird. I always use pedals to fly nose-tail coordinated and center the velocity vector on the ADL in VTOL VR. There's no turn and slip indication in that game, though (or wind, for that matter). I know the apache balances left wheel low because of tail rotor impulse but I feel like a 15 degree constant left crab is pretty extreme at high speed unless the wind is moving pretty fast.
It's to the right of the radar altimeter. Solid line is zero and each "tick" indicates 100 fpm. At the half dashed line you've reached 500, after that it's 1000 then 2000 so forth.

Does Wags always set up these videos to have a left-to-right crosswind component, or is the slightly crabbed flying a particular quirk of the apache? edit: the aircraft is always crabbed to the left (VVI to the right of the nose) regardless of which direction he's flying, so it can't be wind. Is this a helicopter thing?
It's dependant on the direction the tail rotor is blowing in. That's why he keeps differentiating between aerodynamic trim and nose to tail trim. It's more pronounced the slower the heli is moving, and the more it acts on the heli the more it flies canted as well.
Nice one Wags... giving yourself a little bit of a crosswind challenge! Very nicely done!!! Quick question on what I noticed: What are them meat hooks on the left side of the canopy for? And can they be "removed"?
Hi Matt, I’m just going through the Apache manual now, and reading about the radios. Pg 32. It states that the VHF AM can receive between 108 and 115.975, and transmit between 116 and 151.975. Silly question: normal civilian navigation freqs are 108 to 117.975 with Voice Comms between 118 and 136.975. So my question is why would the Apache not be able to use the full navigation frequencies and then be able to communicate on the upper navigation freqs? Is that a misprint or is it actually the real thing? And if so what kind of situation would they find themselves transmitting on a navigation frequency?
Since the AH-64D doesn't have a VOR receiver, the VHF radio reception down to 108 MHz allows it to receive information (like HIWAS weather) that broadcast over some VOR stations. Military freqs extend beyond the upper civilain ATC freq of 136.975. As for the overlap of transmission capability between 116 and 117.975, no clue.
Why does the Apache always seem to fly crabbed/crooked? Is that an IRL thing, or a visual artifact/illusion of some kind? In these videos it always seems like there's some kind of strong left to right crosswind and the velocity vector is well to the right of the nose and this occurs no matter the orientation of the a/c.
@@schoolio64D hmm, ok! it's weird because it shows up in all the videos and it's independent of heading. I would think if it's just an x-wind, the effect would change depending on which direction the aircraft is moving.
What centered ball true trim means vs. nose-to-tail trim when it comes to Apache? It looks like helicopter is crabbing with ball centered. Thanks for the video and your work!
Flying with the ball trimmed or ball centered (aka stepping on the ball), means you're flying aerodynamically with the least amount of drag and flying into the wind, yes while still crabbing. When you change it up to, flying nose to tail, that means two things, you're no longer aerodynamic (meaning increased drag and less efficient) and you're lined up for touch down on the runway or pad. This applies to any aircraft. The reason he was crabbing was because the wind was coming from his left side, left quartering side.
@@Chrisflyss Thanks for the answer, but does it mean in no-wind conditions ball centered means aerodynamic as well? Or it's always different due to some tail rotor or main rotor properties? Cheers
@@bazej1080 it does, but it's also related to the torque properties. Not having enough pedal input will also lead to out of trim flying. If we fly off the pedals, the bird will track our heading due to our vertical stab (and airspeed) and the nose will be out of trim "x" amount of degrees.
I'm very, very lost. When I add collective the helo goes crazy. In videos like this it raises nice and smooth. I was hoping buying a top end gaming PC and decent HOTAS would make a difference but it doesn't. I just don't get it.
Will it be possible to swap flight control between front and back seat pilots during flight in multiplayer or will one need to exit the game and select a new role?
Yes. You can fly on your own with an AI where you can switch seats if needed, or go online with your friends, choosing which seat either wants. You will both have to buy the Apache however.

I'm a fixed wing pilot so I fully admit I don't understand helicopters and the black magic they use, but it seems off to me.
Except for a coaxial design, this is how helicopters fly when aerodynamically trimmed.
@@airplaneian it’s just a crosswind. In 0 wind the velocity vector and acceleration cue would be straight up and down.
@@schoolio64D hmm, ok! it's weird because it shows up in all the videos and it's independent of heading. I would think if it's just an x-wind, the effect would change depending on which direction the aircraft is moving.
Its going to be a great couple of months for flight sim, also an expensive one, very expensive.
What Stick Throttle and rudders do u use Wags?
Great video's, What a amazing machine this is.
Keep up the good work :D
For the -64, Virpil Constellation and CM3 throttle.
@@MattWagner will there be default keybindings set for the tm warthog hotas?
"youre not dropping hot into an lz" 8:30
Meanwhile the Blackhawks at side like:
O_o you dont, but I love to
Lol. That's true
Sweet!
It's getting close! 😀
How on earth did you get you take off so smooth and your landing like a bird with sore feet?! I’m yawing all over the place and “RPM low”.
Landing? That sounds quite optional where we are going, gunner
is a joystick and a throttle enough equip in order to be able to fly a helicopter? i would like to know before i buy the AH-64D .
You know, that left runway would’ve lined you up better for the roll on. 😝
Why is the TVV always off to the right? Can that not be trimmed out?
Based on the amount of torque and how much the tail rotor is working, there will always be an offset when in aerodynamic trim.
Stop teasing us. Thanks for the video, Wags.
What's the dangling hook on the left for?
It's in all cockpits; pilots use to hang their helmets.
I'm very, very lost. When I add collective the helo goes crazy. In videos like this it raises nice and smooth. I was hoping buying a top end gaming PC and decent HOTAS would make a difference but it doesn't.
I just don't get it.
It sounds like your controls are not set up correctly, please see: ruclips.net/video/HmjNjNDp0JA/видео.html
@@MattWagner Thank you for the response. I will check that out.
How do we get to pilot or gunner?
1 = Pilot, 2 = CP/G
@@MattWagner with which keypad
That was very relaxing. Nice flying. What map is this, please?
Free expansion to the Syria map that is coming soon.
That's a little roughly! My a little roughly is slamming into the ground and clipping the rotors.
Hello, nice video Wags.
Do we need to wait for all videos to drop until the helicopter is out in Open Beta?
Certainly not.
@@MattWagner Thanks!
Will it be possible to swap flight control between front and back seat pilots during flight in multiplayer or will one need to exit the game and select a new role?
multiplayer rear seat only from what I have read
Not many comments about the map?
Why does the keybindings that wags say never works for me
Such as?
Will we get the stingers that some countries fitted to their apaches or the AMASE CMWS?
They said no plans. I wish. :(
That would not be realistic for the year/block.
@@MattWagner ah okay. I didn't realize that. Which block are we getting?
@@l.a.xgunner Please take the time to read through the cited FAQ.
Is there cockpit sharing? IE a pilot and CPG sharing the craft?
Added in Edit: This is what might tip the scales to my getting DCS.
Yes. You can fly on your own with an AI where you can switch seats if needed, or go online with your friends, choosing which seat either wants. You will both have to buy the Apache however.
@@MarcTNL Thank you!
Does that Hercules at the end means something..? XD
Just the AI model lol
I was so excited that the s-clip on the bar top right was a physics object, but sadly is just an animated swing :(
So Apache is confirmed to get into DCS?
