That side slip landing and your responses and control inputs instantly shattered my pride of landing on a small ship deck after many crashes. 😃 a long way to go and lot of disappointment ahead in the learning curve for me. But as you said once mastered it should be a very good feeling once you pull it off. Your video is such an inspiration. One of the best helo videos ever. Keep going ! Subscribed and watching the channel for more.
GREAT Tutorial. The UH-60 is hard to land but is so rewarding once you get the hang of it. I've crashed SO MANY TIMES trying to do a J-hook landing like the last one in this video. Very hard to figure out on your own. Thank goodness for this tutorial to help the noob pilots! :D
Any corrections I have are really just slight inaccuracies that aren't really important for the sim haha, also ETL is 16-24kts (in any helicopter) unless it's inaccurately moddled. Other than that great advice and accurate enough for the sim! Everything comes down to practice and getting a good control touch so if you're having issues flying repetitions are the only way to get better
I assumed it was a knots/km/h thing. However, I’m just an idiot who’s never touched the controls of a real aircraft and I’m not very good at the virtual ones either:D. That said, I did think the ETL numbers were a bit high for knots so assumed it was said after flying the gazelle or the Russian choppers which are in kilometres.
You know - with this video, you might have just actually sold me on buying into this sim. I'm a former US Army 68D - and these were always my favorite birds.
Man's a genius. Not only is he a Hornet God but he's also a whirlybird genius. Thanks for this help! I love the Blackhawk and have a bad habit of slamming the rotorblades into the ground in landing.. This has greatly helped me. Thanks buddy 10/10 on a tutorial, great way to break it down barney style.
Smooth like butter! Just a question out of curiosity thou. Do you perform your landings with SAS 1-2, Trim, FPS and boost turned on? Reason I ask is that the heli tends to fight ones input, esspecially in regard of the FPS.
Very Well explained and expertly executed. The other great thing about the UH60-L is that it has Auto Assist working in your favour to smooth it all out ... or you can have direct control with aggression if needed by simply depressing the Trim release. Top Job. I thought I was good but you have definitely showed me up hahaha.
Nice. For the car guys, think drifting or catching a tank slapper. Window is small but it is there. Plane guys, you match loss of lift (stall) with the ground. Look up stol competition. But Mav, some very good points on cues and tells. Excellent flying sir :)
Hey Mav! Couple points I don't think they're properly modeling the drag due to sideslip. This is something I covered in my review video. Unless somethings changed significantly since then, I think you're deriving most of that deceleration in the turn mostly due to roll attitude (the dy/dphi term, for those who know that that means). Otherwise, the general theory is correct. The control inputs you're making seem pretty excessive at times. Again, I think this is likely a result of the flight model not handling those out-or-trim scenarios very well. The amount of lateral cyclic required on landing is particularly suspect. In any case, nice flying. I think it's important that you emphasized the general visuals and attitudes you want to maintain rather than making specific inputs. This will allow these skills to transfer to other aircraft where the physics are more accurately modeled.
Hi Erik, great points mate! The FM is not very extensive so the inputs are a little wild to get the results I want but the aircraft is still a lot of fun to fly. It is a free to fly mod so I did t expect too much from the flight model. It reminds me a lot of helicopters in Arma. I’m going to do a similar video but on the Apache and the difference in control inputs is huge.
Thanks great video. I try to get better with the Uh60. Did you fly the decelerating and the side slip with pressed trim release? do you have a video where you explain how to use the Trim right?
Brand new to Arma and brand new to helicopters. I have TM Warthog stick and throttle , seitek pedals and trackIR….. However, really struggling with settings and landings. Would love tips and more tutorials!
I’ve always treated the effect of the cyclic and collective opposite to how you describe them. Collective always controls your rate of descent. Cyclic governs your speed. I’m not qualified to insist this is the correct way. My approach to landing is pull back on cyclic to slow and drop the collective to maintain the descent rate you need, manage your heading with appropriate pedal input based on the torque demand.
What you described works if you’re actually descending from height, we’re trying to do all these landings and deceleration from low level which requires a different technique
well done Mav!.... great content as usual..... can you please share your axis curves, when you post the apache vid? your control is so smooth, i am assuming for the 64 you have a custom curve for your cyclic? take care bro!
is this applied to the Apache as well? WOuld be nice if you make vids for apache landing flying combat, i find you the most precise and interesting instructor in DCS
Also get into a safe space and just go wild but within reason, You need to know the limits (too much/too little), then you can fine tune controls/input/curves etc. Granted it is a lot easier in the magic F-16 at 40.000 feet. Yes, you might need surgical skills but trust me, it is possible. Mav does it in 3 tries, I do it in 600.....oh well ;)
Hey Mav, may I suggest putting a pause symbol when pausing the clips? My brain keeps thinking it froze 😂 Very good tutorial man I'll be using this quite often :)
I wonder how accurate the flight model is on the Blackhawk, have any former Blackhawk pilots offered any insight into this? I seriously love this module, it combines much more modern tech such as GPS & waypoints that be created & edited while sat in the cockpit, the other CTLD helicopters lack these features. I find it incredibly easy to fly, and very easy to transition into a rock solid hover (borderline foolproof). The only other helo that’s even easier to fly than the Blackhawk is the Kiowa, that thing is practically idiot proof to fly.
I’m getting really good at this, my only issue I keep having is even with collective almost fully down, I keep ballooning and gaining a lot of altitude right over my target landing point. So I can hit the target but I end up like 100 feet over it. Any tips?
@@104thMaverick got it so start the decor by turning the aircraft to the side into the wind earlier so when I get to my target landing point I have less speed/lift and force the nose down more aggressively to help with avoiding lift. I’ll give that a shot. Thanks!!!

Start the decal a little earlier mate and force the nose down more aggressively. If you’re ballooning it’s cause you’re arriving too fast.
