In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll explore flying the 64. We’ll discuss how to taxi, takeoff, also called picking up or “pulling pitch”, and basic trim. We’ll dive into landing and the attitude and altitude hold modes in later videos.
We’ll begin today’s lesson in western Iraq. I’m on the ramp with all the systems set up and ready to go. We’ll discuss the startup procedure in the final video of this series. - Игры
New Apache pilots tend to stare at the symbology when hovering instead of, as you pointed out, just look outside and hover. At night however that symbology is gold.
What's the difference between aerodynamic trim and nose to tail trim? Is the former not applying any counter torque with the pedals or what is it?
@@thomasmaier7053 trim in an aircraft doesnt mean it’s going straight. The nose can be canted off center of the flight path.
Hey Casmo. What's your take on the launch sound effect from the previous Hellfire tutorial vid. The irl footage I've heard sounds faster, sharper and "rips". The sim footage sounds hollow, deeper with more base. Which do you recall?
@@thomasmaier7053 Aerodynamic trim = aircraft's body is aligned with the air moving around it, instead of where the aircraft moving in relation to the ground. AFAIK this means less strain on the body of the aircraft and more efficient travel, since the nose is basically pointed at the relative wind direction.
Nose to tail trim = aircraft's body is aligned with where you're moving in relation to the ground. You're moving "straight", like you would in a car, but you're exposing more of the body of the aircraft to the oncoming air, causing more drag.
@@shd4618 I think it’s fine. It’s a video game. 🤷🏻♂️
Finally, the return of "what's that X doing there?" :)
Ooohhh yes!
Can we please take a moment to appreciate how beautiful DCS has become in 2022? Ok, so I love the Hind and I love the Apache even more. This was the chopper I've always wanted to see in DCS and now there it is, finally. On top of it all, we will get the Mirage and the Phantom this year. How cool is that, actually? In these difficult times ED still manages to make us smile and enjoy ourselves. Outstanding work, ED. 👍
Mirage and Phantom this year??
Steady on now.
I'll think of 2023 just to avoid disappointment 😁
Let's not forget the Eagle ! Phantom was slotted for this year and Heatblur had already been working on before the announcement 🤙
I occasionally watch RUclips videos of Janes Longbow. I loved that game and put so many hours into it. I returned to playing sims when ED released LOMAC and really got hooked with the Black Shark in 2008. It is amazing to see how far military flight sims have come, with DCS setting the benchmark. Thanks to developers like ED and Heatblur, who keep pushing the envelope. It is the stuff of dreams!
Ya I jumped on to fly a fun little mission over the Caucasus with the Su-25t for old times sake. It feels SO smooth and looks so good now.. I dont know if its because ive been playing on Syria for a long time, or because they updated the Sim, but either way its never felt better in VR
hell yeah bro
"What's that Mirage doing here?" was the moment I needed to see in this video! :D
I think I haven't notice something ?
@@ekushisu_ Just as video starts ( 0:30 ) there's a mirage taking off. And Wags is like "huh, a mirage". This is a tease of some mirage update probably, because i don't think those are f1's (could be wrong). Also this is a throwback when Wags teases new aircraft in his new videos by pretending to not know that the aircraft, he put himself into the mission, are there.

Is this "Nick from Eagle Dynamics?" 😄😄
Wags getting distracted by the Mirages taking off, in mid-tutorial, is the most relatable content ever.
squirrel!
This is genuinely making me so happy! THANK YOU for the years of effort that must have been behind the licensing and coding to make this a reality!!! Can't wait to take to the skies.
I really love the light humour thats crept into these videos, the "words are hard" text that popped up mid tutorial had me chuckling all day. Thanks for the great work Matt and all of ED in these darker times, a smile can make all the difference to one's soul
Nice demonstration and addition of text. The sounds of the Apache are astonishing. 🚁
I just sat through a whole series of how to set up the controls for, perform a cold start for, and how to get airborne with an AH-64D and I don't even have DCS. This was very interesting to watch and I'm blown away at the complexity of the aircraft in DCS! Watching the entire process on getting this simulated beast airborne was very entertaining and I feel like I learned a lot, even though I'll probably never use the info. It certainly gave me a greater appreciation for the complexity of these machines. Keep up the good work!
For starting out, if the PERF page is providing accurate data, simply increase collective (power) until you reach the predicted hover torque. Takes the guesswork out of coming up to a hover. Apache pilots will hover at 5'. Kiowa pilots will hover at 3'. As Wags mentioned, in Hover mode symbology, full saturation of the velocity vector is at least 6 KTS. In Transition mode, full saturation is at least 60 KTS. The aircraft sits at a 40 KTS attitude on the ground. So... if you feel like doing a perfect 3-point landing, hold about 2/3 saturation of the velocity vector (40KTS ground speed) in transition mode while doing a roll-on landing. Obviously, wind has a say in things, but for the most part, it works every time. Useful for those single-engine landings where a runway is available.
Is that the "power check"? I read in the manual that you should conduct a power check prior to take off but I have no clue what that is and how to do it and it's not described in the manual
@@boggy8557 Well, we're supposed to do some form of performance planning before the flight, so we know if the machine is behaving as expected. Chapter 7 of the operator's manual is full of fun charts to derive data, and then you find out if your loadout is suitable for a particular mission on a particular day when environmental data is entered into the equation. The PERF page is supposed to come close to what the manual would tell you, but as of a few years ago, it wasn't 100% aligned with the book data. Power Check is mainly verifying Go/No-Go data. If you're pulling more than expected, you may not have enough power to do certain maneuvers, etc. For the purpose of the game/sim, the PERF page should suffice. If predicted IGE hover power is 62% torque, you should see 62% in the upper left corner of the HDU at a 5' hover. If that's the case, you can assume the rest of the PERF page is good (or good enough for an unclass'd sim).
@@robk5943 Thank you so much for the detailed reply, that's awesome! The other thing I was wondering about was how do Apache pilot's fly a traffic pattern when learning to fl the Apache on the conversion course? I have been searching for info on this but google has been useless...
@@boggy8557 If you mean Aircraft Qualification Course, or Transition Course, it's the same as learning to fly any other helicopter. I transitioned from UH-60's and the only immediate difference I noticed was that landing on the tailwheel first (for aerodynamic breaking during a roll-on or single-engine landing) was a no-no in the Apache. My IP thought it was funny, though. Patterns are rectangular with an upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, and final legs. Most traffic patterns are performed to facilitate emergency procedure training, so we try to achieve the desired airspeed and altitude on the downwind as soon as possible. Then, throw in a simulated malfunction, and hopefully end up on the runway with the greasy side down a few minutes later.
@@boggy8557 Also, Force Trim - in the form of a mag break to hold the cyclic and pedals - is always on. Some transitioning seat-of-your-pants pilots (OH-58D) made a habit of holding the trim release button, but I tried as best I could to break them of the habit. Interrupting the force trim also interrupted the tech that can make mediocre Apache pilots looks like Chuck Yeager. Keeping it interrupted just had the opposite effect, but also took the "fight" out of the flight controls. I learned to set it and forget it, then use pressure/counter-pressure against the mag break resistance. I taught it, too. Drastic control position changes warranted major trim interrupts, but in a traffic pattern, not really. And, you don't need to interrupt the force trim to move the up/down stick, which helps. If your heading and airspeed are good and you only need to come up ten feet to be within standard, just pull up slightly on the collective and leave everything else alone. The altitude will change, but the airspeed and heading will remain mostly unchanged. Seat-of-your-pants pilots had to change everything when making small adjustments like that. Not the case in the Apache. Some habits are hard to break, though.
I'm pretty eager to get into this sky blender. Looks like you've got another winner in this module. And I suspect this module will eventually be as deep as the A-10C. Good work ED. And yes, I've been flying the Ka-50 a lot recently to try and remember helicopter tactics.
This is awesome and I look forward to another video tutorial on flight in the Apache! Thank you for your time on this video.

Phenomenal, Wags. This is going to keep all of us early access folks very, busy...thanks to the team for getting the ED EA manual out too, for some extra homework. We've got some cool stuff to distract ourselves with this year, Mirages among them...
Sure has come a long way since LOMAC! Glad to see you're still involved Wags.

I'm still very much learning to fly the 64 and my no means an expert. But even I can easily hover and fly the aircraft. Next to the Ka-50, it's much easier to fly than any other DCS helo.

Great video! I can't wait to have fun with this helicopter! Just a question Wags, do you have any plans for the AH-64A in the near future which I really like too?
Most interesting thing I saw was the SCAS authority boxes around the control positions. This is going to be a big help in getting people to understand how the SCAS works.
SCAS authority? Tell me more!
@@Dreamshadow1977 The SCAS (Stability and Control Augmentation System) works behind the scenes to keep the aircraft stable and to permit the various hold modes to function. It has +/- 10% authority on each axis (except pitch, where it appears to have 20% forward authority). Those grey boxes on the control indicator are centered around the physical control positions, and show where the SCAS could drive the actual command to the rotor heads. It's transparent to the pilot since the SCAS commands are essentially superimposed on the cockpit control positions with no feedback to the stick.
In game, on the control indicator, the red X's appear to denote the trim position, the white diamonds show the control positions, and the green +'s show the SCAS command within the grey SCAS authority boxes.
Thanks Wags :) Gettin' closer!
Awesome Video Wags. Just a note around 3:40 you mentioned that because the translating tendendy you should apply right cyclic and if I remember right the huey and apache need left cyclic to counteract that.
Nope, left.

The Release is an the Horizont! 🤩
Even though I can follow this tutorial to the letter, I am find the amount of torque required for ground taxi, hover taxi, and flight differ based on the map and weather conditions as you detailed which is what is so cool about this helicopter module! Thank you for the symbology tutorial as well it helps me understand what the aircraft is doing. Even though I find myself reacting to what I see the aircraft actually doing outside the window lol. I managed to get airborne a coupe of days ago. But I find myself tilting on the right side even with the rudder trim locked slightly to the left, be it may not far enough to the right. But that too I will learn what the sweet spot is that I managed the first time I got it. Although my landing was a bit rough I pat myself onthe back for not exploding her lol! But that is another Tutorial I will have to study! For now its practicing hovering and taxing and flight!

Too tired to start digging into the pocket sized quick start guide, but this will do for tonight's nighttime viewing.
Even though I've only ever messed with rotary in DCS as a novelty, I can see why I absolutely had to get this one. It might just be the most ambitious consumer flight project to date.
I'm also amused by the instruction Wags is passing on to us from the SMEs. This stuff is obviously not just randomly made up and is presented in a really good format. Apache is going to be a whole new experience.
You know what they say about seeing Mirages in the desert. ;)
What is nose-to-tail trim vs true trim?
Thanks for your work Matt W, great job of the whole team!
"Words are hard." 😆😆😆 Good on ya, Matt ✌
I remember moving Apaches and Blackhawks around in the Army. But the funniest thing was when you were NOT on the movement team and you're just doing what you're doing, and suddenly there is this loud *BANG*, because the tow team forgot to unlock the tail wheel pin and that sound tell the whole hangar that they just sheared the pin in spectacular fashion. It usually got a laugh from everyone in the area and made the faces red of the tow team. haha
Indeed, getting the locking pin lined up may throw a few folks.

This may have been asked somewhere else but in VR does the monocle only render in one eye or is it rendered in both?
It does yes. Definitely just the right eye however I think I read that you can select an eye or both.... but I could be making that up lol
It's going to be rendered in either, or both IIRC (selectable, like the A10, F16 and F18 . The ED forums had a particularly nasty individual ranting on about how it 'should only be in one because REALISM!!!!1!', and how 'he would be living in the Apache for the next 20 years' or some other such utterly random rubbish, and Wags (correctly) replied that it would be available in both because not all DCS players had the use of all their eyes, and this isn't the actual military. This leaves the choice down to individual preference, always a win IMHO.

Hey wags, quick question will the Apache be getting the IR jammer function in dcs or would that be under the radar jammer category? Thanks!
That would not be accurate for the year/block.
Currently in the Apache course and genuinely curious if that’s how other people’s symbology looks in the HDU. It took me like 5 helmet adjustments and eventually a smaller helmet just to barely fit the entire display into my eyepiece. If it was as condensed as this video shows that would be so much better for your scan. And we’re not supposed to go into the maintenance function of ihads to shrink it. How do you get the indicatorsa to appear in the top-right of the screen? RGTRL + ENTER for the left box, but how do you get the different indicators as Matt had in the top right. i am sure I saw a Yellow and White version on a Hind 24 video once
Great video Matt as always. I can't wait for you to start shipping the boxes out to us so we can all start building our own personal Apaches :)
White diamond is your physical position of the controller, and the green line is how the SAS/SCAS adjusts it.
Will the force trim work both for pedals and cyclic, or can we set it just for cyclic?
Yes, cyclic and pedals have magnetic brakes for FTR.
A technique for visual hovering is to concentrate your view at 45 degrees either left or right of the nose. From there, you can see both lateral and longitudinal drift pretty well. From the 45 you also only need to move your head 45 degrees to either the nose or the side, instead of 90 degrees from the nose to the side. Obviously, you can switch which side you are focused on or move your head as needed to avoid obstacles! BWT, doesn't the AH-64 have wheel brakes to slow a ground taxi?
Yes it have wheel brakes but they 99% using the cyclic to slow down or stop and then they press the brakes and put parking brake on position. I mean yes you can use brakes but cyclic is the right way for this.

Can you do a wither video on the trim button on cyclic more in details ?. Because, I saw that it has att hold and altitude hold. So I dedicated video for trim that would be great.
Thanks
Yes, once all the trim and hold modes are complete.
Been back flying the Mi-24 as practice, I VERY EXCITE when it comes to the AH-64D, which would you say is harder to hover Matt?
It’s easier.
The real confusion will be to change the muscle memory of pushing the LEFT pedal for anti torque instead of the RIGHT like in the Mi-24 and Mi-8 (if you have several flight hours with those modules).
I would say it's easier. At least you wont have to hit 20 switches to do one thing, lol.
I find everything that isn't Russian to be easier to fly. The Hind is a particularly odd one, sharing some similarity with the Mi-8 unsurprisingly, in that at higher collective loading it really does take a boot-load of pedal input to hold steady. Makes it feel very analogue and believable.
@@frostycab The Hind has the trim system. I was fighting the trim at first until I found out how it actually worked. You can just take off in the hind without pedal inputs, as long as you have the yaw trim on.
Hi Wags, is there an Auto-hover on the Ah-64?
He uses the rudder both times for the 2 different trims at the end of the video ? Is that normal or did he mean cyclic for the first trim ?
No, pedal and FTR to set trim ball for either aerodynamic trim or nose-to-tail trim.
I've never thought or even heard about anyone using a hat switch for rudder, for those that have done this, how does it feel? Is it better to use my twist rudder on my T16000M or a Hat for the rudder in not just this but other helicopters like the Huey as well?
It's not by choice. Wags is unable to use rudder pedals. I assume his joystick does not have a twist function. For anyone else, pedals are ideal and joystick twist would be a decent alternative. You will have far better uses for hat switches.
@@DriveFast_FlyHigh I'm aware he's disabled but didn't even realize that's the reason he'd use a hat for the rudder.
That makes sense but I could have sworn twist rudder was still an option for him from what I know of his disability, so it's curious he uses a hat, I'm guessing the stick he uses doesn't support twist rudder as it's a high-end one.
Thanks for the response, should have realized the reason but completely slipped my mind.
@@gregorybentley5707 I honestly think trying to use a twist stick for a helicopter would inevitably end up with you having carpal tunnel. And I'm not even joking.
Hopefully the guys at Simshaker for Aviators got an early access, so the Buttkicker will work at launch.
I can't wait for Simshaker support. Going to be amazing feeling the vibrations of the gun and hellfire launches while in VR
loving the vids so far ED, but a mere thought... Is it really safe to have that S form hook dangling around? Not that it suddenly turns into a nose piercing when crashing...
When you got both hands on the collective and cyclic, you need something to get the boogers out of the nose.
Mirage F1, what a tease this Matt !!!!!

Or do we have to wait awhile after a module release for the trial to become available?
