my Grandma Ruby gave me a piece of wandering jew in 1984 and I have had the plant with me ever since. Many pots and lots of pretty colours. Set it outdoors in full sun and watch the colour change to bright burgandy! I love this plant.
I followed her node cutting/leaf removal instructions but then just placed the cuttings in water. Within about two weeks there were some decent roots growing and THEN I potted it. It has been doing fine.
I put my cutting in my fish tank aquarium water for a few days and the roots grows like crazy. The nutrients in the water is good for all plants. Don’t throw out fish home fish tank water, give it to your plants. 😊
TyrannosaurusBecs Hi, yes,. When I do water changes on the aquarium every two weeks or so, I save the water and give it to the plants. They love it. Saw someone do it on a video here on RUclips and been practicing it ever since.
Great video...I'm not sure why people feel the need to leave negative comments...Doing this looks simple and most have a spoon! Soil is cheap and those plastic planter containers are at the $1 store...it's just your time and most people that love gardening know this is therapeutic so time is irrelevant. Thanks Josh's Frogs! I just did this and it took me less than 10 mins!
Excellent video! Thank you for this advice. I have several cuttings that are growing really well after following your instructions! Looking forward to more plant propogation
Awesome. Mine was good all last summer and all winter and for some reason started to dye this summer. I'm going to have to take the good stuff off and try this.
Im trying to grow a cutting from a main plant that I though wasn’t gonna make it because it was sent in the post and got pretty battered and thrown around .now it’s massive and doing great so decided to try and grown more fingers crossed it takes good video
These have to be the easiest plants to grow. I remember the first time I accidentally broke off a stem. I planted it in some soil and didn't expect much to happen. 2 Weeks later the thing had grown so much already. Now I'm just trying to make the biggest baddest Jew I can get. I have to add that I don't use a plastic bag, but I have a humidifier and tend to keep humidity high in my room for my Calathea's and other plants so these Jews just thrive in it naturally.
@@sarahh228 a humidifier? For me you can easily just place them in a small water bottle, and they start sprawling roots in a week or so - soil works, but in my opinion it’s just more fun to place it in water and see the roots develop. Make sure to replace the water every few days though.
Good to know! I have three kinds - the purple, the all green, and the variegated. I've been tempted to mix them, but usually don't see them that way. Thanks!
They will root in water within 24-48 hrs. Just pot them in soil. They grow like crazy. I recently gave away a huge container plant that too big. I took all of the trailing and put them in water overnight and by morning they had rooted... I couldn't believe that they rooted overnight. This was just last week. I potted all the cuttings in 2 large pots ( that's how much I had to take off the mother plant) and they are growing fast. I had put nothing in the water when I cut the plant, just filtered water. I do give all my indoor and outdoor potted plants fish fertilizer except for my 2 potted citrus plants that get soil and fertilizer made for them.
One thing it be careful about moisture + organic matter + lack of fresh air is that it will want to grow fungus/mold which will kill whatever you have in there, such as a plant. Maybe poke some tiny pin holes or open it and blow in there a few times a day, I don't know, go with whatever works, but if you run into problems, try stuff.
I wish you had zoomed in closer to the node. Also better lighting. A very informative video but what I wanted to learn about was the part that was not well lit.
So I tried to water propagate this plant i put it in water for about one week but no roots yet what do u suggest should I just soil propagate them or i should leave it longer
Wandering Jews don't need any special cutting instructions or procedures. I have a huge hanging pot of them and occasionally, the dog will knock off a few stems where they'll sit on the floor for a day or so. I'll pick them up, put the stems in a cup of water and in a couple of days, little rootlets will appear. Afterwards, I stick them into another pot and they'll flourish into a new Wandering Jew.
Joshua, I stuck mine in a cup of water and now seeing rootlets. From that point should it be a certain length of the rootlets or appearance that you then potted it? This is my 1st time. I didn't cut like in the video.
I have the fuzzy type, when it was sent to me it was damaged in shipping. I tried to salvage it by putting the broken pieces in fresh soil. The plant is growing well. But the leaves turn brown at the base, all new green growth takes place at the top of the stem, I find the brown leaves unsightly, when I try to remove the brown leaves they are too secure like the green one am I doing something wrong? Is this the plants normal growth habit?
Hi Judith, Unfortunately, when grown indoors, bare leggy stems are usually the natural growth habit of Wandering Jews. Sometimes if moved to brighter light, new growth may form where old leaves have gone brown or fallen off, but often it's best to just take cuttings, propagate and begin the cycle over again. I hope this answers your question, but if you have any further concerns, just let us know. We're always happy to help! Julianna
My cuttings came in the mail there were no roots and the stems are very thick. I placed them in water and one is producing roots. How long should the roots be before planting in soil
Probably came with the plant or another plant. Gnats lay eggs on indoor plants. You can catch the gnats in a bowl of soapy water until they're gone, and treat the plant
Hi Ashley, If you can fit two plants in your ziploc bag comfortably, go for it! I hope this helps, but if you have any further questions, just ask. We're always happy to help! Julianna
Thanks so much for the reply! I wanted to reduce my plastic usage any way I can and it just so happens I have a gallon sized ziploc I can reuse and both plants will fit in there perfect. :)
Hi Shahnaz, it depends on which kind of soil it is. Our Potting Soil (www.joshsfrogs.com/josh-s-frogs-potting-soil-2-quart.html) is a mixture of Canadian sphagnum, peat moss, coarse perlite, dolomite limestone and a starter nutrient charge. The white specs are either the perlite or the limestone.
Hi Hannah, The plastic bag is to trap humidity so the plant doesn't dry out. If you are using a propogation dome or some other way to hold in humidity, you could not use the bag. You can successfully root cuttings without trapping humidity, but it requires much more frequent watering and your rate of success won't be as high.
D most of the Times plants will grow new tiny stems from the nodes beneath leaves. But if not, you can always cut the stem off and propagate it! If your cat likes to nibble on your house plants, make sure to research whether they’re safe for pets or not, and move the poisonous ones out of your cat’s reach.
This makes me laugh. 😂 Because most of these plants that i saw can grow at any time of the year. And they don't have to be in a bag to get roots. Just water. And they can be in direct sunlight. Because this is where they live . And how do i know. I am from a hot climate. And they grow all year round. They grow all over the place. The dog's play. And sleep in it, and it's still grow. Now, in North America people used them as indoor plants. Isn't that something. I guess we take too much granted.
She said to put it in indirect light; light that has been diffusely reflected.

Are these plants cheap to maintain, dont want to spend a lot on money on plants especially ones like the wandering jew that looks hard to take care of.
Hi rabidsquirrel73, Thanks for getting in touch with us. Our plants are not difficult to care for, nor do they require expensive products to maintain. Most of our plants can do well as houseplants, or be used in vivariums or other container gardens. If you have adequate lighting and maintain a watering schedule suitable to the plant, you should be fine. And you can always get in touch with us if you have questions or concerns along the way. You mentioned the wandering jew... This is one of the easiest plants to care for. It is a fast growing vine that can be propagated easily. If you are new to plants, I would also recommend any variety of syngonium, as they can handle the occasional over/under watering you may encounter as you are developing your care routine. I hope this information helps! If you have another specific plant you are curious about, or any other questions, feel free to get in touch. We are happy to help! Have a great weekend! Michelle
Tina is definitely very knowledgeable, but she makes this process way too complicated. Look at other videos on here that are a lot shorter than this one and explain a much easier process that is just as effective.

1984!? Beautiful
I put mine in direct sun and they got sunburned
i put mine in sun and it faded first then it had a heat stroke had to lay it to rest
I followed her node cutting/leaf removal instructions but then just placed the cuttings in water.

Ya i thought that was crazy that she planted them without roots on them
this is what i do, it worked much better

This is a great tip! Do you just water your plants normally using aquarium water?
TyrannosaurusBecs Hi, yes,. When I do water changes on the aquarium every two weeks or so, I save the water and give it to the plants. They love it. Saw someone do it on a video here on RUclips and been practicing it ever since.
Thank you for something new to me. I propagate with just water in a bottle & then straight to soil. I like your mini greenhouse method, too.
Great video...I'm not sure why people feel the need to leave negative comments...Doing this looks simple and most have a spoon! Excellent video! Thank you for this advice. I have several cuttings that are growing really well after following your instructions! Looking forward to more plant propogation
Just take a cutting ,remove bottom leaves , shove in to water, should send roots in afewdays. Pot up snd keep-moist until established...super easy
Awesome. Mine was good all last summer and all winter and for some reason started to dye this summer. I'm going to have to take the good stuff off and try this.

@@khangaroo8166 oh okay, thank youu.
Thank you! That was very detailed!!
Thank you, God bless! Greetings from 🇧🇷.
If it's warm, no zip bags are necessary. They usually grow pretty fast. It takes about 2 months to grow a bushy hanging plant from such cuttings. 💜🌸
Can you mix the different types of the same plant? Thanks for the helpful info.
Absolutely!

Thanks for vid. Ive taken cuttings and throw them into other pots. This plant is almost impossble to kill
In Florida I just take the cuttings and stick them in the ground and they grow.

"If you run into problems, try stuff". Lol, excellent advice.
Are the little white hairs on the leaves safe for frogs?
Can you show us an example of what a mature plant made from only 2 cuttings looks like?

Thank you very much for the video
Good, like this video!
I need to brush my mouth before blow??
I like wandering jew bec. Of there colours
Is soil or water propagation faster?
Hello! I just followed this video to propagate my white fuzzy. How often do you have to water them when you put them in the bag?
Thank you!

Yes put in plastic bags, why? it Is a humidifier till the plant is established.
Trying this method with a bunch of clippings in an empty strawberry container

I wish you would have shown a closer view while cutting.

U r a dum dum.
Under the node ...
Or under three leafs
Rude
Listen to what she says. She tells you exactly where to cut it. Below the node. Leave about a quarter of an inch of the plant.
Her accent makes me miss Chicago
I'd like to try this but I am worried it will cost me too much money in the long run
Shrek huh?
how can you get wonder jew to live in winter time
