That how I started off back it the early 80s when everyone has Am set before 27/81 came out I was paper boy save all the penny's to get the equipment great days. Great video
The Signal Generator has 2 BNC Connectors - Do all the Signal Generators Output the Frequency and the Modulated Tone out of that Single RF Output BNC Connection. I bought an old Heathkit IG102 of E-bay years ago and have never hooked it up to see if it works.
Bear in mind the Heathkit IG102 signal generator is AM, not FM. It can be used on the CE MultiNorm CB radios by tuning them up on CEPT AM...and not touching the FM detector/discriminator coil! I did a video on using an AM signal generators in my 'CB servicing on a shoestring budget' series. The Heathkit generator will still have internal modulation that comes out of the usual RF socket. The second socket will be to use the audio generator for other purposes. Richard, G0OJF, UK
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 - I was wondering how to connect that second connector for the Modulated Output to be able to get my signal. That makes it easier to understand since you only had the one connection but also had your modulated signal. Thank you very much - I am thinking about trying to repair my old radios from back in the 60's and 70's Great Videos.
EXCELENTE VIDEO, YA LO COMPROBE ME DIO RESULTADO EN CALIBRACIONES CB AM DE 27 MGHZ., MUCHAS GRACIAS POR COMPARTIR SUS CONOCIMIENTOS, TODA VEZ QUE SOY PRINCIPIANTE EN LA MATERIA. SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO
Fantastic video and very well put across as always, thank you for taking the time to make your CB Radio videos very much appreciated. See in the comments you doing one more FM vid will you cover how to set the kit to enable the signal meter to be correctly set at S-9 as well please! Go have a cuppa in that great “CB mug” of yours you have earned it! All the best , Mark.
Just for you Mark! We can't do the S-meter with equipment this simple I'm afraid because the attenuator needs to be laboratory calibrated. I'm trying to get a 'cheap' SINAD meter for the next video & the supplier of used test equipment (Stewart of Reading) say's he'll ring me when one appears. Yesterday I ordered a cheap piece of test gear from China which may work on FM CB. We'll see, when the slow boat from China comes in...so there may be TWO shoestring RX videos. I notice this video has a thumbs down & wonder what that's about! Was that the CB 27/81 mug I had specially made? Richard
You had the mug in a video a while back it has cb lingo over it i seem to recall. Great looking forward to some more vids, i can only assume if someone pressed a thumbs down it would have been a mistake, your videos are great! Regards Mark
The problem I have found with these cheap signal generator that many of them leak more RF out the case than the front connector so you cannot turn them down even with an external attenuator. I had a digital one made by digimess, avoid anything with plastic covers etc. I think the boat anchor is the better solution if you have the room and can do basic repairs. Another great video Regards Chris.
The second fm only video using an am only signal generator will use our £10 boat anchor signal generator I bought off ebay & I think we'll be able to make that video nest weekend. I'm waiting for used piece of test gear to arrive from the 'States & it's due on Tuesday. We bought the cheapest signal generator possible to a) use with transistor radios & b) specially to do this video. You will realise the 'proper' test gear here is:- bench 1, Farnell synthesized signal generator & Farnell transmitter test set, bench 2) (in most videos) Marconi all in one test set, bench 3) (some videos) Quartzlock transmitter test set with Farnell synthesized signal generator bench 3) schlumberger Stabilok all in one test set. bench 4) another Farnell setup.Bench 5)another Marconi all in one. Bench 6) cheap shit & boat anchors.
UK CB radio servicing I have a Stabilock and a Marconi 2955 they provide a convenient package on the bench. I don’t use them that often unless I need a Sinad measurement. All my equipment was boat anchors when I started, but even those are getting harder to find and more expensive. I don’t have much valve gear now mainly due to weight and size restrictions. The old Marconi signal generator are generally superior to modern units in terms of distortion and screening if not frequency stability. Although stability is ok if left to warm up for a few hours. Thanks Richard keep up the good work, I appreciate the detailed explanations you provide. I work in electronics but not radio. Regards Chris
Very helpful, thank you. How did you get the signal from the signal generator into the CB though? How was it connected? Many thanks, keep up the excellent work!
the signal generator output (BNC socket) is connected to the attenuator box (PL259), so that lead is BNC plug to PL259 plug. The attenuator box is then connected to the aerial socket on the cb radio, so it was simply a PL259 patch lead between the two. Richard
Yes, the radio was set to channel 40 CEPT AM & the signal generator tuned to match, something like 27.405 of the top of my head, then attenuating the signal lower & lower whilst tuning the receiver of the cb.
As I said before, I don't normally do repairs / servicing for end users, but under the circumstances would. You're between a rock & a hard stone with that as it is. It's a nice set now made illegal by having the extra set of channels in it, which also causes a big compromise in performance. I also don't remember doing a servicing video on that set either...and there's two versions. Have a word with me. rshireby@yahoo.co.uk
Hello Richard. I digress when I said that the Icom ICB 1050 was my first rig.. I'd completely forgotten that I had one of those two channel handsets before the Icom. I used to go on the local net on 30. The only trouble was, I could only be heard by one station. A chap by the name of Bert (Handle Cheyenne) A very cordial chap and a good group of CBers. Always willing to help. The Harriers not for sale is it? I ripped my to pieces years ago trying to get more out of it then it could handle. I have fond memory's of that little rig HiHi. Regards, James.
Roger on the other rigs. Legality aside, The chassis used in the Harrier in incapable of power output in excess of 6W, which actually makes so little difference from the legal limit of 4W that you are unlikely to get more than 100yds extra...and thrash the radio, like driving a car with the pedal to the metal constantly. Amplifier power works in dB & I recall you have to 'square' the power to double the range. If you bought an audio amplifier for your Hifi & it was 4W output, then compared it to one of 6W you are unlikely to detect much difference. Shame you scrapped the set. Nothing here is for sale as they are mainly customer repairs...we do bulk 2-way radio service work to the trade. Richard
@@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Ah no worries on the sale of the set Richard, fully understand. If you come across one though, I'd be very interested. It was only really to take a trip down memory lane. I was only about twelve and knew even less than I know now HiHi. I am searching the web though for one and come across another Icom ICB 1050 for sale, in lovely condition, cosmetically anyway. I'm a glutton for older radios and I've a few more weeks in lockdown so need another project!. Keep up the great work and catch you further down. Kind regards, James.
James, it just struck me to point out to you that the Icom ICB1050 has nothing whatever to do with the amateur radio equipment manufacturer who are called Icom! Just in case you didn't know. Richard

Where is the oscilloscope connected it looks like the probe is floating somewhere behind the PSU and not even connected to the rig in anyway
In this case, the oscilloscope leads and the FET-VOM leads are connected to the external speaker.
