This man and his performance will be immortal for the years to come, albeit the non-sense mumbling of those who think that their comments will avoid the path of the oblivion.
It's funny how this piece is marked Allegro by Scarlatti and yet everyone is so outraged and offended by the fact that Michelangeli plays it fast as it was written. This performance invoke the brilliant Spanish guitar and everyone wants it to be swooning, slow and ridiculously romanticized.
Thank you, sir! You explained the distate and cringe I always get when I hear romanticised versions! He (Scarlatti) came from the Baroque Era, must be played quickly and vividly on most of his songs, specially because it was composed for harpsichord, which had no dynamic variations, but most of the pianists always insist on playing it smoothly and with loudness gradations. Go listen to Chopin, then!
This was beautifully played. Michelangeli is unsurpassed at this sonata concerning velocity, effortlessness and clarity. There is expression in every note. You can do it in a very different way but not better.
Thank God the comments on this awe-inspiring performance are more gracious than other posts of this piece. I keep hearing "this is way to fast" or "this is mechanical". What the hell are these people smoking? It is supposed to be sprightly and not a "Marche Funebre". If people would take the time time to glance at the score they would realize by its very notation it is meant to be this fast. ABM is a genius and when i heard it, i went out that very day to obtain the score. this is miraculous.
For those of you, who complain about the tempo here, that's absolutely ridiculous. Scarlatti was not a romantic composer, just keep that in mind! Every other mushy performance on here it's unacceptable and heavily debatable. Scarlatti was a virtuoso. Scarlatti was not Chopin. Scarlatti was not Schumann. Go and listen to romantic music then. Michelangeli's interpretation is just perfect and flawless. Stop posting nonsense, guys, please and do some healthy research before over speaking.
For the Romantic interpretation, listen to Gilels's performance of this sonata. It is VERY different but not less beautiful. Theoretical stuff about style, "staccato & rubato" etc. is secondary, it is actually for those who cannot play themselves or for teaching students.
What a genius. Interesting how watching him play takes away a lot from the music; once I close my eyes his playing and Scarlatti come flowing beautifully ...
The metronome was invented decades after this sonata was composed, so tempo, outside of the 'allegro' indication, is a matter left to the interpreter's choice and to the listener's preference.
An unicum is something tha person do that no other can repeate and Michelangeli is an example of that. It's not important if this enterpretation like or not, it's something unique and immortal.
What an extraordinary comment! I hope it was just tongue in cheek and no meant seriously. The composer deserves the fullest attention. These sonatas were written for the harpsichord, so the percussive approach and the speed are more appropriate than attempts to be lyrical, however beautiful they may be. Correctly played the music certainly speaks for itself! Any musician who does not respect the composer is a thief.
And Artur Schnabel, Edwin Fischer, Stefan Askenase, Lili Kraus, Annie Fischer, Byron Janis, Gina Bachauer, Grigori Sokolov, Arcadi Volodos, Harold Bauer, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Harriet Kohen, Jorge Luis Prats,Livia Rév, the old Horszowski, the old Ciccolini, Mischa Levitzki, Moritz Rosenthal, Percy Grainger, Radu Lupu, Tatiana Nikolaeva, Rafal Blechacz and many others! They were/are not only great pianists, but only great MUSICIANS!! Anyway, you understand what I mean. Greetings, Geert.
If you read Martha's biographies you'll understand she was a PHENOMENAL pianist already when she came to Europe and started studying under several Masters' guidance. As a famous teacher stated: "She was fifteen and pianistically had nothing to learn anymore!" And Martha's mother wasn't enthusiastic about Michelangeli as her daughter's so-called 'teacher' at all! So told me several weird things, while having a coffee in Paris. Regards, Geert Dehoux, pianist.
The perfect blend of technicality and musicality, neither at the expense of the other. Rare.
I would strongly beg to differ. Technicality, yes. Musicality? He turned a gorgeous work into an etude.
Who can dislike this perfection???????
Unbelivable performance full of colors and expresion. Bravisimo Maestro!
Who can? I can. And quite strongly, I might add.
Pura perfezione
Unbelievable! I don‘t know how often I have heard this now. A wonderful piece of music. No one plays this better than Michelangeli.
Just because he plays it faster than the speed of light doesn't mean he plays it well.
Absolute perfection.
There is no better interpretation for me....so wonderfully flowing and elegant. ..sheer genius
I love the Scarlatti sonatas . . . they never grow old, especially when played by a master like Michelangeli.
Perfection is not of this world ... with one exception : Arturo B. Michelangeli
"Perfection is a lot of little things done right..."
Every time I listen to this it comes as a real treat. Masculine, sturdy yet delicate.
This man and his performance will be immortal for the years to come, albeit the non-sense mumbling of those who think that their comments will avoid the path of the oblivion.
Perfect comment! Congrats
"This man and his performance will be immortal for the years to come," that's an oxymoron.
Simply perfect and sublime rendition by Michelangeli. One of the greatest ever!
This is wonderful, nobody else can play this well, Bravo Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli !!
They do not understand the Hispanic spirit...they do not understand art. Let them be. They are sheep.
This is much faster then allegro. It sounds like a prestissimo!
oh, that's the instrument.. I was thinking that he's not playing a piano but a Spanish Guitar.
Thank you, sir! You explained the distate and cringe I always get when I hear romanticised versions! EXACTLY. It should be played with the Spanish guitar in mind.
magnifico, impeccabile.....semplicemente perfetto!!!
I've never seen anyone play the piano with such elegance. Those fingers literally caress the ivories, they don't strike them!!
Scarlatti, Michelangeli ,grazie per essere esistiti!
Il " Maestro" dei maestri.
Transparente, cristalino, bellísima interpretación de Scarlatti. ¿ABM? Un genio.
Exceptionnel !
Meraviglioso e ipnotico
Genial, técnica, postura, toque interpretación etc, etc, etc.
MY GOD..IMMORTAL
There is an easy elegance and refinement to Michelangeli which is a thing of beauty to watch as well to listen to.
Absolument fabuleux 😍
This was beautifully played. Michelangeli is unsurpassed at this sonata concerning velocity, effortlessness and clarity. There is expression in every note. You can do it in a very different way but not better.
Beautiful and amazing. Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼!
Vynikající klavírní provedení, brilantní technika a rytmus.
Naprosté pochopení díla.
I heard this in a documentary. I love it so very much!
The Art of Piano. Great docu.
Absolutely thrilling!

Absolutely!!! I agree!

Perfect!
as if romantic music must be played slowly lmao
Thank you for your comment! Looking at the comment section one can see, that there is a big lack of understanding.
A very rare and great musician this man.
simply beautiful.
Bellissima!!!
Questo video non l'avevo mai visto. Grazie!
Simplemente extraordinario!!!
che meraviglia...
So solid & such a mathematically exactness makes his performance more attractive & aristocratic. Great musician. Thanks for the video.
La Perfezione!!!
D.o.c.
Phenomenal, beyond great.
Such an inspiring interpretation, I ran to the piano to learn this the first time I heard it!
This is just a little jewel all around and brightened up my day.
I can't believe I stumbled across this! Love it!
Brilliant.
As always, Michelangeli is impeccable.
Totally I agree, fabulous and perfect with expression
Jyotidi
This just sounds soooo... Italian in style. Very nice piece and great performance by the Maestro. I want to play this!!!
This warms me
Bliss on Earth!
Exquisite
The faster, the better, sheer magic !!
Grazie mille

Una leggenda immortale!
Bravo Maestro!!!
Bravissimo!
A breathtaking tempo. Previous to this I only knew the golden recording of Murray Perahia (which I still prefer) but this is incredible.
Perahia... 🥱
Ahh... there is still some class in this world :)
No one can do this better.
immenso
Perfect ! Great Michelangeli ! Thanks for posting !
It dances, and the voices are very clear!
When true artist played true creators!
I'm playing this for my Grade 8... He makes it look so effortless!
Pure awesomeness. Wow.

I'm anxious to hear your performance, please post it on youtube.
this is just so .... Together!!

If anyone wants to get this on DVD, it’s from “Michelangeli plays Beethoven (1962)” - published 2005 by Opus Arte - and is available on Amazon.
This is great
This is the bomb! :D
Forgive me for using such informal slang to describe this beautiful piece
At least this version is not accelerated like the previous one! Both very nice.
It is like perfection held taut on a string.
Just when I thought Scarlatti couldn't get any better...
Perfect.
Heaven , simply heaven!
The most inspired of all 600+ Scarlatti sonatas.- The playing by Michelangeli is not from this world.

Perfectly
Perfection!!! Melancholy, strength. Nothing to do with romanticism.
Exceptional
masterclass
Yes--well said...
I totally agree with you!
Geert Dehoux, pianist.
I listened to this with the playback speed of 2x
@geertdehoux
I couldn't agree less!

The greatest what ?!
Insopportabile
Czerny Tempo!
