The idea of defending in a 4-2-2-2 shape is actually to bait press where we allow the opposition the play the ball over to their full backs and then we attack their fullbacks with our full backs it do have advantage and disadvantage especially when it’s executed properly it’s effective if not we are really exposed, the idea of our players all pushing up and only 2 players behind the ball it’s actually to outscore the opponent by creating numerical advantages and overloading the central areas which I think was instrumental in his Bayern team but also it leaves the defence expose to counters that’s why his Bayern conceded a lot of goals during his tenure and his Germany teams because they lacked Lewandoski or a prolific striker to make up for those conceded chances that resulted to goals

You have to be narrow when defending. It is worse to have defenders spread out . And you have to choose either or because you cant defend both wide and narrow at the same time ,so you have to pick your poison.

I hope you watched last week game between Barcelona and Valencia. Hansi Flicks asked Lewandowski and Raphniah to exchanged positions during high pressing against Valencia defense in which Raphniah will go upfront in position 9 to run around pressing Valencia CDs and goalkeeper because he's fast and energetic that Lewandowski while Lewy went deep to position 10 to mark Valencia's pivot which demanded less speed and was played by Raphniah.
