Another great video. I love your videos that discuss authors and your mixture of examples in various environments. Love the Lira example ❤ Thanks so much! From, just a mom
Though I didn't care much for Hemingway's stories themselves, the thing I absolutely admired and worked to emulate was his razor sharp concise use of language. He could do so much without bloated, flowery language. He truly did have a grasp of pacing and conveyance that any writer can learn from. Great video.
My last writing improvement was learning that deleting as much as possible of what I have written would make my stories better. Those are my darlings to kill. Not the not so necessary plot points, but having the plot points being shorter than I originally written them. Second draft being less than half the length of the first one is not due eliminating the unnecessary but shortening it by not describing or explaining or infodumping so much. Usually I do it by writing in such a way that would make the potential readers use their own imagination instead of relying on me to explain everything about everything to them. The fact that they might imagine it differently from what I originally imagined it as is a good thing. Forcing the people to see your world as the same as you see it is cruel. No, really. Go to the comment section under a video of some channel frequented by the far right leaning audience. Or any other political extreme. Tell someone there that they are wrong about something related to your college major. There is no way to change this persons mind. It doesn't matter that you know for a fact this person is wrong because you have spent the entire semester at college learning about the same exact topic under someone who happens to be strict but also a real life expert on the topic, which you know because their scientific papers on the topic are highly cited by other scientists. You will be made fun of for your so called ignorance on the topic by a half a dozen of people in the comment section who all just so happen to have a highschool student level understanding of the field you had graduated a college in. No, really - that is exactly what happened to me. What do the real life ignorant but unaware of their ignorance people have to do with this? Your readers are ignorant about the world. They also love using their own imagination to feel less ignorant about it. They might imagine the buildings as a lot taller than you the word of God had decided they were. And also, the forests as dark and wild. Then you must give them 10 pages till the end of the book an explanation of the trees in the forest being regularly trimmed for firewood and then add that the tallest building in the town being a two storey one, which is quite tall for the town of this size. 😂 Don't over explain. Tell them just as much as they really need to know to get the story. Plot elements that are not super important to the story because it would still be the same story without them are better to stay. They add complexity to the story. Everyone online says those are the darlings to kill. I dissagree. Don't oversimplify the story in the name of minimalism. Turn it less descriptive instead. Tldr: When editing your book, don't make it shorter by deleting plot elements that are not important enough. make it shorter by shortening your descriptions. Readers love more complex than needed stories and hate descriptions. Knowing this made my writing better.

Wonderfully poignant. Kudos. Ah, the joy of revision! Writing is like whetting a knife. The more you hone it, the sharper it becomes.
