Which common worldbuilding mistakes do you often see in current fantasy stories?

I see a lot of the use of geography on the macro, but there is very little use of it in the micro. A simple ditch has determined the course of history on many occasions.

Seeing the quality, I’d assumed this was yet another channel I hadn’t found yet. Lo and behold it’s got less than 10 subs as of the time writing this!
We will watch your career with great interest.

If you ever have trouble making your cool world building ideas resonant or meaningful to the wider story, just think to yourself
"This thing is cool...WHY do I think it's cool?"

Before watching, I'll throw in some of my own throughts.
I'm drawing heavily from Song dynasty China for my POV civilization. I've got a few ithers, but I'll focus on Song.
A lot of the themes, story, conflicts (inner and outer), came from that decision.
The same is true for the characters and who they are. The motivations come directly from their duty to their family and to the empire and their confucian way of doing things.
Some feel their duty gives true purpose. Others feel it's an overwhelming responsibility.
Those things are all possible because of how the world they live in works.
You cannot have good character without a good setting, IMO. Go as deep or shallow into that fact as you want, as long as it enriches the story/characters.
History is your friend. You learn a ton about human nature and get great inspiration for the setting, characters, and story.

Yeah, it’s true that the setting / worldbuilding when well researched will define a lot of the themes and the characters motivations, all of it kinda influences on each other if you want to make your world cohesive. Are you writing fantasy or historical fiction with this Chinese setting?

@LoreGeist dark fantasy that's heavily inspired. My continent is basically East Asia plus South America.
It's clearly not an issue all fantasy writers have, but I really struggled with my world building until I read a ton about the civilizations I've ended up including and mixing together.
Rather than a silk road to Europe through the middle east, there's one to the Andes with the amazon rainforest to the south.

Firstly, well done sir. No limit for you or this channel. Keep going. For a suggestion, how about how to mix fantasy with sci-fi. I’m struggling with this in my novel right now. Sci-fi, to me, demands such thoughtful or rational explanations where fantasy seems so free and open to interpretation. How to blend them well?🎉

Your voiceover audio is fine, but when you are speaking on camera you need to back off that mic. or turn down the gain.

For the most part, I loved this video, but I'm not sure how the details of the Wheel of Time's worldbuilding creates any kind of thematic disconnect. Not every description of clothing or social custom needs to reflect some inner struggle or core idea to the story. Besides, there are far more themes to that story than the ones you mentioned. For instance, a big thematic idea is the dynamics between men and women and how both sexes can work together most effectively. The gender norms of each nation, yes, sometimes including details such as clothing, do play into the exploration of that idea in subtle ways. Similarly, a lot of the political scheming in the story serves to challenge Rand as he wrestles with the balance between being a hero and a tyrant.
I'm not saying the worldbuilding of this series is flawless; there are a lot of aspects of the magic system, for example, that just don't seem to fit together, since Robert Jordan started his series like he was throwing a ton of ideas at the wall to see what stuck, and after the first few books a lot of ideas seem to get forgotten about and go unexplained and unreconciled with the rest of the worldbuilding. And I will admit, perhaps more time is spent exploring the cultures of different nations than is necessary. However, I just wanted to point out that there is more going on in the story thematically than you pointed out, to which a lot of the worldbuilding does connect. Still, your overall thesis in this video is a good one.

Hey, thanks for the comment! I agree with you that Wheel of Time has many more themes, for the sake of the 15 minutes video I wanted to be more succinct about it.
One of Wheel of Time’s problems, even though it is a very enjoyable series and it really contributed to the genre is how repetitive the descriptions are sometimes, Jordan repeats explanations for the worldbuilding and the magic system a lot, he also repeats character descriptions a lot. I know this was somewhat a necessity back then, because there was a time distance between when each book was published and readers needed to be reminded of some stuff, but in today’s context, it is better to be more streamlined and use your writing “real state” more efficiently, to either progress plot, add to characterisation or to thematic exploration.
But once again, WoT’s impact is undeniable and it does more right than wrong, but it’s not a perfect series and it could be more streamlined in order for things to flow better.

Why do people hold microphones that dont need to be held.. ? The blue yeti comes with its own stand and is powerful enough to pick up your voice from the next room.
I suggest using some other kind of prop if you want to keep your hands busy.

It has to be said: You're cute. And the information is 100% on point for worldbuilding.
