    There is actually a relatively simple answer to this question: After the Keyship left, High Charity lost ALL its power. So, in order to keep High Charity powered, the Gravemind brought as many cruisers, carriers, and supercarriers into the City as he could to keep the station online by basically plugging them in to the City's primary systems. Given how powerful a single Keyship is, that would probably be HUNDREDS of Covenant ships. So, when you take into account High Charity's astronomical power requirements AND the fact that the Elite and Brute ships were slagging every Flood ship they could find, it's not too far of a stretch to say that the Gravemind may have been able to spare 1 CCS Battlecruiser.

    • @rustedgreatsword4902
      @rustedgreatsword4902 5 лет назад +67

      That's a really good point. Id bet that the gravemind wouldn't spare too many ships even if he could, since all would be lost if he didn't focus on the most important threat.

      @@VainerCactus0 Thats assuming it had one and it would power the whole ship. Assuming that, if they glassed the whole plantet, it would probably be more of a hinderance than helpful, sense losing the planey means less bio for later, and doesnt help it achieve its immediate goal or long term goal. Just my thoughts.

      Additionally, High Charity would have had far fewer space vessels than normal due to the great schism, during which Brutes and Elites were scrambling to secure and control as many ships as possible for their forces.

      Except this point is completely voided when you realize High Charity had TONS of Forerunner power cells all over it..Literally every where. Thousands.

  • @deriznohappehquite
    @deriznohappehquite 5 лет назад +92

    This was only a mistake in hindsight. There was no point in sparing ships when final victory was near at hand. The UNSC and Covenant Separatists could have contained any small scale Flood outbreak on Earth or Mars, just like they contain an entire CCS cruiser's worth in Voi. The Halo Array presumably had plenty of redundancy because it's always presented as a galactic threat, and even if it didn't and the Gravemind sent out some small ships' worth of flood, they're left with feral flood forms, which will eventually be found and glassed, so what's the purpose there? Those already exist. Above all, the Gravemind wanted to stop the firing of the Halo Array, then it would be largely unstoppable. It didn't know about installation 04B until it was revealed by 343 Guilty Spark, nor did it know what was happening on the Ark until it passed through the portal. The last thing the Gravemind knew was that a small fleet went in pursuit of Truth. The Gravemind took all of its forces through the portal to help achieve victory. It would have been reckless to assume that the small anti-Covenant fleet would be able to stop the firing of the array by itself, and it would have been entirely pointless to send out small groups of Flood that could be eventually contained. Hell, even the CCS cruiser that was sent to Voi was probably a mistake.
    You're saying that the Gravemind committed too many of its forced to the Ark, but even the forces it did commit weren't enough.

    • @kermitthehermit5476
      @kermitthehermit5476 5 лет назад +22

      Yeah, the flood literally had no choice but to side with Chief and the Arbiter to stop the firing of the Halo arrays in time. The flood took a massive gamble sending all their forces to the Ark which ultimately failed.
      The Flood want as much biomass as they can get so if 8/9 of the galaxy is devoid of life then there is less food for the flood to consume.

The UNSC and Separatist forces could have easily been largely destroyed by the time the Flood arrived on the ring.
      The forces he sent were also not enough to stop the Master Chief and the Arbiter from destroying High Charity and activating Instillation 04B.
      What does sending some spore pods to neighboring planets actually gain the Flood? The UNSC and Separatists already succeed in containing an entire CCS Battlecruiser's worth of Flood.

      >What does sending some spore pods to neighboring planets actually gain the Flood? The UNSC and Separatists already succeed in containing an entire CCS Battlecruiser's worth of Flood.
      Currently Flood spores are very over powered in the Halo canon. Based on what we know about them, he could have sent spores on some planet and withhold the infection until enough people were infected by the spores. At which point the infection would "activate" and turn into an epidemic that isn't just localized in single African city.
      The only reason spores weren't a problem on Earth after Halo 3 is because, canonically (I believe), the glassing Mombasa got rid of them before they were able to reach anywhere else.

      It would still be a massive problem. The flood would then be without a Gravemind, only now there would be some random feral flood forms in the middle of nowhere, waiting to be destroyed, which already exist throughout the galaxy. What do they stand to gain by having some feral Flood in the middle of nowhere?
      >Currently Flood spores are very over powered in the Halo canon.
      I'm very skeptical of this. There's only one instance where we've seen someone be infected by aerial Flood spores in Halo. The other time, they're infected by a bite from a combat form. That's it. On the other hand, we've got numerous instances of creatures breathing Flood spores and surviving.
      >Based on what we know about them, he could have sent spores on some planet and withhold the infection until enough people were infected by the spores. At which point the infection would "activate" and turn into an epidemic that isn't just localized in single African city.
      Even if the Gravemind sent some flood spores to a planet, if that planet was populated, the slip-space rupture would be detected and the dispersal pod would be destroyed or contained. If the planet was unpopulated or populated by non-sentient lifeforms, you've got some worthless feral flood.
      >The only reason spores weren't a problem on Earth after Halo 3 is because, canonically (I believe), the glassing Mombasa got rid of them before they were able to reach anywhere else.
      Yes, but where would they send Flood Spores where they wouldn't get nuked, glassed, or otherwise destroyed?

  • @aww2historian
    @aww2historian 5 лет назад +18

    The flood could have easily grown to a galactic level threat in the Human-Covenant War if, after having controlled High Charity, it sent one ship at random to any habitable planets in surrounding space as they did when they sent their first ship in Halo 3 to New Mombasa. In decades, they would consume life and grow in strength, albeit with less technology as they did in the Forerunner Flood War.
    Maybe they did...Halo 6?

    So this is my understanding and it’s only mentioned once in the game, (when the elites drop down in the pods on flood gate), the rest I had to read in the lore... so here goes!
    The high charity defence fleet was in disarray due to the schism, the gravemind used this to his advantage to insert himself onto high charity, quickly consuming the inhabitants. Now the sanghelea were aware of this and had already begun glassing the halos surface of infection and were now preparing to quarantine high charity with a blockade of ships. Upon truths departure with the key ship, most of the brutes left to aid him in the battle of earth... leaving the elites to deal with high charity. Eventually a single infected covenant cruiser escaped the blockade and a small fleet of ships follow to ensure the infection doesn’t spread, this is the fleet commanded by the ship master. While the rest of high charity was still being blockaded. Eventually the grave mind left for mars however the elites were still following. Knowing that truth is about to fire the rings, he leaves for the ark using his special precursor slipspace drive, and I’m assuming that any thing he sent outward from high charity was destroyed by the quarantine fleet.
    One thing that people always think is that the gravemind in halo 2 and 3 is all powerful and has the ability to destroy the forerunners. However that’s not true, he’s actually very weak and he knows it, this is why he plays the game of war. He purposely let chief and arbiter go because he knew that they would tear the covenant leadership apart and divide the covenant which was the graveminds largest threat. Once the gravemind took over high charity it was mildly protected because the space station was not able to be easily destroyed. And honestly the gravemind would have won if not for an unexpected twist that he didn’t even see coming, the replacement halo and that cortana (with whom he was interrogating to learn what she was hiding) still held the index. Now the gravemind is crashed on the ark with no ship to leave and a massive superweapon pointed right at Him.
    Sorry for this being really long but I just felt I should share:)

  • @MilkyPerfected
    @MilkyPerfected 5 лет назад +11

    You have to remember that they had an extreme knowledge of everything. Chief and Arby WERE able to stop the rings, so gravy boi would have wanted the best odds.
    Also, sending High Charity to the ark meant the flood there would be unaffected if the rings were fired. Maybe gravy thought he couldn't succeed, so sent his entire force to the ark to take control of the place that could save his army, and also could sustain him, as there was a war going on.

  • @Knalxz
    @Knalxz 5 лет назад +18

    1. Nothing says they didn't do this and local forces were able to repel the smaller infestations.
    2. Why would Gravemind, having no clue of the amount of forces present at the ark reduce his very limited and extremely exhausted forces after fighting he largest fleet the covenant as ever amassed by taking a gamble on not sending everyone to the Ark?
    3. There was no way Gravemind and his forces were at all aware that Rtas was about to start glassing Truth. The literally just showed up as it was happening.
    4. Cortana didn't lead the Flood forces to the Ark and the splinter force sent to Earth was a distraction. It is inconceivable for Cortana who we already know was corrupted by Gravemind at this point to even get a device on that ship without Gravemind noticing and how would Cortana even know about the Ark or it's location on Earth? Gravemind knew, and so he planted a seed to get everyone's attention to go to the ark to fight them all in one last WHOPLA, hence why he dedicated all of his forces there.

      2: Reapers
      1: G1/Aligned Continuity Cybertronians.
      Bayformers go straight to the bottom. An advanced alien race.. . Yet they're beaten by modern day humans.
      The Forerunners go number 3. Now, I assumed you were talking about just the Prometheans and Sentinels. They're pretty decent. Sad that a whole army can't handle 1 green spaceman, who has extremely poor technology compared to them, but atleast they can fight off both the Flood and Covenant.
      The Reapers go number 2. The species that they fight are always lower tier than them. Its never a fair fight.
      Also, they're 2 km Capital ships. Promethians are ants compared to them.
      G1 and Aligned Cybertronians are number 1, simply because Primus and Unicron are gods. And then there's combiners like Devastator, and huge guys like Metroplex and Omega Supreme. Also Aligned Continuity have crazy relics like the Forge of Solus Prime, the Star Saber, the Phase Shifter, and Red Energon. @EckhartsLadder ; I actually have a theory as to why the Gravemind sent all of his forces to the Ark without any other contingencies. In Halo 3 they are deleted dialogue, one of which has the Gravemind directly and explicitly say (with an angry/distress tone) that Cortana tricked it into sending all of it's forces to the Ark. To add to this theory with more speculation, it is possible that Cortana was helped by a remnant of Mendicant Bias to help her resist the Gravemind long enough for it to fall for the trap. There are a few videos of this dialogue on RUclips that can be used as a source reference such as "Halo 3 - The Lost & Untold Stories Of The Last Level" which was created by Generalkidd.

    • @deriznohappehquite
      @deriznohappehquite 5 лет назад +8

      The CAS probably wins due to the superior firepower of its energy projectors. Generally, I'd say that Halo ships will punch above their weight/tech level compared to Star Wars ships because they have actual main guns.
      I gotta say that one seemingly silly thing about the design of Star Wars warships is that they very rarely have actual main guns. You've just got a ton of relatively small turbolaser emplacements. Historically, warships were usually equipped with the biggest guns that would fit. It's better to have fewer, bigger guns, or to just produce more warships. The whole point of WWII battleships was that their guns could fire farther and hit harder than other ships' guns. It doesn't make sense to build an Imperial Star Destroyer when you could build three

    • @fulcrum2951

    The Ring in Halo Infinite is Instillation 07 which was inhabited by Mendicant Bias who used the Ring as a Flood base in a way. If there’s no flood in Halo Infinite I would be pretty mad as that is such a tie to deep lore that they could really really profit off of by making the Campaign feel true with the Flood, Banished acting as a new Covenant, Spirit of Fire making a appearance and Rtas ‘Vadum finding the lost COS Class Supercarrier he’s been looking for in lore. In 343 industries can put that together (along with Playable elites of course for multiplayer) they could have a great halo in their hands probably worthy of a Game of the Year Title.

      Unless you give UNSC ground troops biotics and shields. Biotics are OP, and _every_ SA soldier Is equipped with shield barriers and augmentations.
      ODST's put up a better fight, but better training and experience can only do so much when up against shielded, augmented, potentially biotic commandos of the highest standard the SA has.

    @4:19 the assumption is that the cruiser was sent by the Gravemind and not by Cortana. If Cortana managed to send it for the purpose of getting a message to the Chief, then the small size and the singular vessel makes sense.
    Also it’s important to keep in mind, most of the flood controlled vessels were shot down by the covenant fleets around Halo and High Charity. They stopped fighting each other long enough to ensure no slipsspace worthy vessel (with the exception of High Charity presumed dead in the water) containing flood could leave the Delta Halo system.

    2 things. 1: analytical minds can be amazing for creating a world. Even if you can't imagine a whole new world if you partner with someone you could make them think more thoroughly about every detail, look at mass effect 1-3 for how that could work. 2: I don't know too much after 343 took over for bungie, but if the gravemind just tricked cortana into believing that they had done all that, making her and others think that the flood was completely contained, they could spread in secret and maybe even be bigger before the powers realize what was happening.

    Let's face it. The Flood was pretty much doomed the moment they crossed swords with that one man doomsday machine, namely the Master Chief.
    From that moment in Halo CE when The Chief first saw the flood on Jenkin's helmet cam footage, the Flood's fate was sealed in an airtight coffin.
    So, what was the Flood's biggest mistake? Crawling out from under that damp, dark rock in the first place.
    But you do have a good point. There were so many opportunities in Halo 3 that could've lead to an easy Flood victory.

    To be honest the real explanation for the gravemind's behavior is simply a narrative one: Bungie needed to establish the threat of the flood high enough to maintain dramatic tension but not to the point where they seemed like a hopelessly unbeatable enemy. It's likely that if flood ships had escaped across the galaxy humanity as it is would never be able to defeat them. Bungie didn't really want this and wanted there to be a final showdown with the flood on the ark in Halo 3.
    This is why we have this kind of convoluted situation where we have to bend over backwards to explain why miraculously the gravemind was defeated when realistically it probably should have had a better plan.

    I don’t honestly believe that the flood could have done as you say.
    As seen in Halo 2 and other instances, Slipspace takes a little while before a ship actually takes the jump, as they have to open a slipspace portal first. This is particularly true with covenant ships. So, if a flood controlled cruiser were to attempt to make a jump, the Sangheili fleets could focus fire and wipe it out. It’s also somewhat unlikely that there were that many ships even inside of High Charity, as vast as it is. The entirety of the station was in a state of open war both inside and around the surrounding space around the station, so I believe that the vast majority of any ships on High Charity were probably sent out to help either the Sangheili or Jiralhanae fleets that were currently warring outside the station.
    I also believe you’re underrating just how adept the Sangheili are in space combat. Not only did the win the battle against the Jiralhanae forces outside the station, which most likely outnumbered them, but later on the battle of Installation 00, the managed a complete defeat of 30~ Brute controlled ships in truths fleet with merely 10 ships. By the time High Charity warped to the Ark, Truth and his forces on the ground were the only Covenant loyalists left at the Installation.
    With this knowledge it’s entirely believable that they were capable of quelling whatever ships the flood managed to get their hands on, which I do believe were very few in the scope of the splintered covenant armada.
    As well, it’s likely that the Gravemind had to use resources from whatever ships may have been on High Charity to help power the station, as the Keyship was hugely responsible for the powering of the station, as once it had been uncoupled, the station pretty much went dark before the Gravemind made his modifications. He’d even seemingly been using the backup batteries as well, to put the power problem in perspective.

    The point about the missing range of 04 is a good one, and could potentially be what the Gravemind should have done, is gone there to hide. If the Halo rings, fired, then they could just go to the rings or planets of the galaxy, and get more or better ships until a sentient species arose, and used those to be cattle until other species rise to prominence.

    I can't help but think about the fact that the gravemind in halo 2/3 & wars 2 (I assume) is an ancient creature stuck in one place and finally given a chance to escape, which may make it desperate to remain so, and therefore prone to not thinking as logically as it should have
    I don't know if it makes a difference, but after taking high charity most of its biomass, and therefore thinking power, now comes from covenant hosts, and I can't help but also wonder if that affected how things turned out too

    Great analysis of what the flood might actually do. There are a few reasons why the writers did not let this happen.
    1. They were wrapping up a trilogy. Can't have a "Universe is safe again" if there is massive threat of flood spreading right behind you.
    2. It would be the forerunner trilogy story all over again. The spread would get out of control and humanity would be forced to use the rings to stop them, without the ability of saving all the species of the galaxy.
    3. There was no need to give the impression that the flood were still around or a threat. The galaxy is massive and there are other rings that the writers could place the flood if they wanted to later on.
    4. It may not be time to judge whether or not humanity is ready to assume the mantle. Humanity is relatively new at galactic expansion and influence. If the flood spread to some distant parts of the galaxy and stayed there until it was time, then that would be alright. To start an invasion and spread so close to humanity's home world would not be wise if your intention is to test humanity at a later date.
    5. It was more important to save strength for fight at the Ark. Simply enough why diminish your forces unnecessarily when you can wait to do it after the major threat of the Halo array firing has subsided. Also what is the point of expansion if you fail at stopping the array.
    6. The halo array can still function alright with a ring or two missing. Also if the Gravemind knew how the array and ark worked, then he would have known that a replacement would have been made. He most likely had no way of knowing whether that ring was reconstructed or not. Again why risk diminishing forces.
    7. The Sangheili would have just glassed Mars if the flood spread there. They were already at Earth. A short jump to Mars would have been nothing. They could have glassed Earth, but they settled with just half of Africa at the request of the Arbiter. Again why risk diminishing forces.
    The writers are great (minus the garbage of Halo5), but they can't or decide not to go into so much detail to rule out these kinds of theories. It's always nice to just leave some things up to the imagination as well as leave open plot holes to expand on later.

    Honestly, the best strategy the gravemind could establish in this scenario would targeting a halo array. You make a valid point "Hypothetically" the halo ring near reach was destroyed which suggests there's an opening in the Halo Ring containment. IF that were the case then the gravemind should've spent all it's time destroying as many of the other Halo rings as possible. If the array is even launched it wouldn't change anything if majority of the Rings are destroyed. Even if he doesn't know where the other rings are here know where installation 05 since that's where he originally came from. At that point the best strategy would send that cruiser crashing down the ring exploding it's core to destroy the rings firing abilities. This is assuming the destruction of the Halo ring would affect the containment zone with the firing of the other functioning Halo rings. Regardless having 2 Halo rings destroyed I feel would be better odds than flying to the ark where his forces would have to deal with the covenant, the sentinels, the UNSC and Elite forces.

  • @trevorhale7230
    @trevorhale7230 5 лет назад

    I always saw this "mistake" as the Gravemind simply gathering enough forces after being freed from delta Halo to focus all it's attention on nothing but the thing that stopped it before; the Halo array. Infecting other planets would be pointless if it was fired again. But this time it had the knowledge on the Ark and the Covenant's plans to fire the array via Regret.
    It also knows how much of a threat Chief is. Cortana references this in Human weakness. That's why it let Cortana send her message about the Ark. It didnt care what the message was or what it said, only that it would lure Chief to Cortana and High Charity to either just let him take her so she'll be a problem later due to her Logic plague, or to subsequently lure Chief to it to kill him.
