Monkey3 - Welcome to the Machine
Whom Gods Destroy - Insanium
The Flying Norseman - The Flying Norseman
Sunburst - Manifesto

I still haven't stopped listening to Frost* every day since discovering Life in the Wires. It's revving up to be an all-time favorite, not just a favorite of the year. Thank you, Prog Report for bringing this record to my attention! The last to-me-unknown band/record that you guys showed me was Moron Police's Boat on the Sea, and that record skyrocketed on my personal rankings. Here comes Frost* right up there.
Otherwise, a good talk-up of a lot of the good records this year. I liked Opeth, Beardfish, Big Big Train, and Caligula's Horse as the rest that I felt should be ranked for the year. I admit that I haven't yet given Neal Morse and the Resonance much of a chance yet. I'll come back around to it eventually.
@@andrewalderman Life in the Wires is going to be an all time great for me! Album of the year yes! Album of the past decade. Might be!! Cheers!!🤘
A hidden gem not to be missed: Mother of millions- magna matter.
You will love it since you are watching this video
Just checked them out: Love it! Thanks for the recommendation.
DGM new record is my favorite of the year so far.
Frost* definitely has dropped a diamond here. Fantastic record. I cannot stop listening to it. Opeth and Blood Incantation also on my list.
You got me with Meer, bought it after listen to two songs. What great music. Nice List btw. Thanks for it.
Great wrap up, I can’t argue with any of it. And Dan’s description of the Opeth album was perfect!
Thanks guys, really enjoyed this show❤Great number one as well. Albums I also liked this year are Ritual, Geordie Greep, Glass Beach and less proggy like St. Vincent and Idles
My Top 10

I'm really surprised Endless by DGM didn't make it!!!!! Best prog album I've heard in probably 10 years IMO.
I've never heard of DGM. Very interesting and thx for pointing me in their direction. Cheers
Definitely! Great vocalist and incredible musicians who can actually write good songs.
Amazing Albums, I think also that Pure Reason Revolution - Coming Up To Consciousness is an amazing Prog Album
PRR's album is great - better than the last one.
Remembering seeing Caligula's Horse in Atlanta at one of the ProgPower shows. Loved the show!
👍🏻
And a great review of Last Will & Testament by our friend there .. nailed it, imo.
Although only recently released, The Last Will & Testament, Opeth .. blows everything into dust .. truly a masterpiece .. Album of the year .. easily
After listening to "True" I can say Yes is back!
Close to the Yes 😀
A British prog/alternative band called Beak needs to be mentioned. They released a good album that received a lot of attention here.
A mention for Herin’s, “Hiding in Plain Sight”, which is about his father who suffered from Alzheimers.
Airbag put out a sonically interesting album.
And young Brits, Azure released an album that is barking mad but has some wonderful playing on it!
My top 5 albums of this year:
1. The Last Will and Testament - Opeth
2. You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To - Knocked Loose
3. Les Chants de l'Aurore - Alcest
4. Firebird - The Dirt Poor Robins
5. Bellum II - Aquilus
Really wish I could get into the Vola album, maybe I'll have to give it one more try because that album art is so good.
Ritual The Story Of Mr. Bogd Part 1
Meer is definitely one of the best albums this year. It almost reminds me of Moon Safari album from last year, how good it is.
The Likes of us” Big Big Train best of the year.
Hopium by Kingcrow is a great album
Opeth 🥰instant repeat.. best of the year ..z
Definitely think an album that doesn't get the recognition it deserves is mannequin by kyros. Really great mix of 80s synth, and prog. If that sounds good to you Definitely check this album out.
Best album of the year though is Geordie greep and the new sound
Opeth is my number 5 of the year, think it would be higher if it came out a bit earlier. A true rock opera.
I thought I had my list done, then 3 days ago I discovered Azure-Fym and it kinda threw a wrench into things. Great album and was hoping I'd see it here
Great album! Top
5 album for me!!!!
I'm a little surprised at what this group picked for slot #2. I completely agree with with that choice, but I thought I was something of an oddball for liking it so much given that it's a group of mostly unknown musicians.
Great list, however, has anyone listened to The Flying Norsemen self-titled? If you like Arabs in Aspic, you'll love this one.
Superb job guys, really enjoyed that! Many thanks for the mention. So glad Blood Incantation made the top 10! My Top 5:
1. Blood Incantation
2. Pure Reason Revolution
3. Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks
4. Dilemma
5. Weather Systems
Honourable mentions: Returned to the Earth, Von Hertzen Brothers, Teramaze, Wheel, Airbag
I must catch up with VOLA, Meer, Caligula's Horse & Stratospheerius and keep persevering with Frost* !!
No accounting for taste.
Hippotraktor - Stasis, Lizzard - Mesh and Dvne - Voidkind are great progressive albums from this year. They are my top 3 but I haven’t listened to everything.
Haven’t heard those.
I'm glad you mentioned DVNE. It is also one of my absolute favorite records from this year!
@@kornel8123 check out Hippotraktor if you like Dvne. Ignore the slightly goofy name because they are class.
Sorry if I missed this in the comments elsewhere, but how could there be no mention of Tigran Hamasyan's The Bird of A Thousand Voices? To me, this stands out as the Album of the Year. Nothing like it. Maybe I am on some other planet?!
Other honorable mentions in my mind are The Aristocrats' Duck, Vennart's Forgiveness & The Grain, Night Verses' Every Sound Has A Color in the Valley of the Night, Tony Levin's Bringing it Down to the Bass, and Cloud Cult's Alchemy Creek.
Love the inclusion of Blood Incantation. Agreed it should be included based off its uniqueness in the 2024 landscape. Thanks for all the great content this year, fellas. Merry Christmas.
I don’t understand why the Jon Anderson solo album “ True “ isn’t getting more love on this a Prog podcast channel as it’s exceeded many peoples ( incl mine ) expectation and it’s hands done my favourite album of 2024 .
You didn't haven't been watching. We ranked it very high and have been saying great things about it all year.
@@progreport I lost interest in your podcast and I was making my comment on the comments left on here
Top 5 in an order that will definitely change between now and the end of the year -
1. Beardfish
2. Blood Incantation
3. IOTUNN
4. Anciients
5. Opeth
Shame ORGONE's 'Pleroma' is missing. But then they don't care about self-promotion.
Von Hertzen Brothers is a 5 piece band not a trio! it's a trio brothers and two other members
Opeth #9 to low
I'll be really disappointed if there's no Opeth.
You won’t be.
Quite a great set of impressions of all these albums, curiously many of them made my top metal albums of the year (Opeth, Blood Incantation, Caligula's Horse), here I share my list of my top prog albums of 2024
ruclips.net/user/shortsAXM8eaZnxFE?si=bRhZd0a3-EAT2vpa
My number one #1 OPeth outstanding music
Its insane to me you guys dont do avenged sevenfold in this prog report world. idk where to say this to yall as the newest album is 2023. but they are the definition of prog..WAY more prog than dream theater now n days.. if yall get into opeth, btbams really not heavier if you're doin old and new opeth, so check out between the buried and me latest release and colors parallex. But A7X is so prog they even had Mike portnoy as a drummer on an album haha. theyve been prog since self titled id say, unless you want to count city of evil, but prolly not..the newest album is literally the most progressive thing possible. So id check self titled and the newest out..especially the newest to start because it progs harder than anything i can think of. I never see Kaipa either..i love em. per nilson on guitar. Those are 3 prog bands I love, so. life is but a dream will prog yall SO hard..it makes other prog, not that prog haha. GO prog!
We had the last A7X album in our top albums of 2023. We dud cover that one. But generally they aren’t really a Prog band.
@@progreport oh nice! there ya go. i mean they are as much as dream theater, and going opposite..have gone full prog further into career, where dream theater is mostly going metal. but self titled, the stage, life is but a dream, those straight up metal prog. granted life is but a dream is different. especially, u guys do metallica who has zero prog haha. which is cool, i welcome all the goods. but nice, thats dope yall did it already. The ones I named, try those albums out from A7X, self titled, the stage. i personally believe 'life is but a dream' is the proggiest album ive ever heard, its wild. makes all the other prog not very proggy ha..as prog is to push genre boundaries and go anywhere. that album is the epitome of that. between the buried and me is one of my top bands. they are prog death metal, but very much prog so, if u can get heavy in a different way than Opeth, theres them. I'm surprised u guys dont do Kaipa! thats jus straight up swedish, zero metal prog..pretty good. little piece of heaven on self titled A7X is a great example of where they would go early on, eclectic song.
Oh and the Norwegian Mikael akerfeldt, ihsahn! Ihsahn is black metal but he's also prog too, very much so, like as much as the 2nd half of opeth. Great rec right there dudes ha
Where is Jordan Rudess!?!? 😢
Love that album. Just missed the list.
thats not true about the opeth album..theres choruses ha
Dont want to be that guy but Meer is nowhere near the level of the 1st 3 Arcade Fire albums
Death Metal fan here. That Blood Incantation album keeps getting mentioned as one of the best albums of 2024, and I can only conclude that IQs have dropped sharply over the last few years.
Where is the melodic development? The purposeful transitions? These two tracks are a compositional disaster of jarring moods and schizophrenic 'anything goes' songwriting, and almost nobody is critiquing them for it.
The band believed their own hype, got high, and started throwing all of their favourite influences at the wall with no concern about how they would work together. I burst out laughing at several of the hamfisted segues on this thing. And it had such potential - they're good musicians and I like all of the individual elements - but the execution is horrible.
Reviewers - if you care about the future of Progressive Metal please stop encouraging this amateurish consequence-free style of composition. We must hold bands of this calibre and influence to a higher standard before more compositionally-insane copycats start flooding the airwaves.
Maybe you don't understand their music.. 😉
@@Hegge2005 Maybe you don't understand my criticisms.. 😉
Can't listen to any prog after 1980. For me its time was up.
Nah
Sorry, just can’t spend over an hour on this. Why do all these best of us have to go on forever got a shortened version somewhere
We spend 1000 hours listening to albums so you only have to sit through 1 😀
@ no I totally appreciate it but just an hour is too long. I don’t have the patience lol
@ you assume i dont already spend thousands of hours listening, thats why i cant spare an hour 🤪
Blood incantation. Its like Fleshgod Apocalypse hooked up with Cynic then had a little bit of fun with Pink Floyd. And then completely finishes the job with Nile and Emperor. 😆 What an amazing album, Wow
Nice description
My no.1 of the year
It's a complete stylistic and compositional mess that doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as those bands.
Opeth, Frost*, Caligula’s Horse, Blood Incantation, and VOLA ruled 2024 imo
Agreed
My dad shot me this year
Sorry to hear that.
Did you die ?
@@GLENLYNAS I'm alive. Just couldn't make the podcast recording.
